An IMEI is a 15-digit identifier for a cellular device. Mobile networks use it to recognize the device and, in some cases, block it from their networks if it is reported lost or stolen. Knowing an IMEI alone does not give someone a supported way to track your live location, read your files, unlock your phone, or take over your number.
What an IMEI identifies
IMEI stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity. GSMA defines the usual IMEI as a 15-digit number assigned to a cellular device. It identifies the device, not the mobile subscription: the SIM identifies the subscription using the network. A phone with multiple cellular radios or SIM functions may have more than one IMEI, so check the number associated with the relevant line or radio in the device settings or with your carrier.
The digits have a defined structure. The first eight make up the Type Allocation Code (TAC), which identifies a device make and model family; six following digits form a serial number for that TAC; and the last digit is a check digit. In the IMEI SV variant, the final two digits identify the software version instead. GSMA allocates official TACs. GSMA’s IMEI technical information explains the identifier and its structure.
When a device connects, it signals its device identifier to the mobile network. The network can use the identifier and its TAC to recognize the device and apply network rules.

What someone can do with your IMEI
Carriers can identify or block the device
A carrier can use an IMEI in a missing-device report and may suspend service or bar the device from its own cellular network. Operators participating in the GSMA Device Registry can share identifiers for devices reported lost, stolen, faulty, or otherwise unsuitable; participating networks may then block them. Coverage depends on the operators’ participation and implementation, so an IMEI block should not be assumed to apply everywhere. See GSMA Device Registry information.
Approved organizations can check device information or status
Network operators and certain organizations—including insurers, recyclers, authorized dealers, repair centers, law enforcement, regulators, and inventory managers—may use device information or status checks for operational purposes. GSMA describes Device Check as a service for approved organizations, not an unrestricted public lookup. GSMA Device Check explains its intended use.
An IMEI alone is not a live tracking or account-access tool
The official sources describe the IMEI as an identifier used for device information and network controls. They do not establish that a person who learns your IMEI can use it by itself to locate your phone in real time, read its data, unlock it, access your accounts, or take control of your phone number. Live location, remote locking, and erasure use separate device-finding services and depend on the relevant service and settings being available.

Treat the number as device information worth sharing only for a clear reason, such as a carrier report, manufacturer support, a police report, or a used-phone status check. Avoid publishing it publicly or including it in an open listing.
How to find your phone’s IMEI
Try the phone dialer
On many cellular phones, entering *#06# in the phone app displays the IMEI. It may also appear on a device label, although many current phones do not have a removable back or a printed identifier. GSMA’s guidance is available in its IMEI FAQ and technical information.
On an iPhone or cellular iPad
Open Settings > General > About. Depending on the model, Apple also documents finding the IMEI on the SIM tray or device body, through Finder or Apple Devices/iTunes, in the Apple Account device list, or on the original packaging. Apple says iPhone 14 models and later do not have an IMEI engraving. See Apple’s instructions for finding the IMEI.

Keep a record somewhere separate from the phone, such as secure account storage or the original paperwork, so you can provide it if the device goes missing.

- Contact your carrier promptly. Ask it to suspend service and whether it can block the device’s IMEI. Have your account and device details ready.
- Use the manufacturer’s device-finding service. For Android, Google’s Find Hub can help locate, lock, or erase a device depending on account, settings, and availability. This is separate from carrier IMEI blocking; see Google’s guidance for finding, securing, or erasing a lost Android device.
- Report a theft to local law enforcement. Provide the IMEI if requested.
- Protect accounts and payments. Secure accounts used on the phone and follow the platform or provider’s steps for payment apps. Google recommends protections including a screen lock, SIM PIN, and remote device controls.
Checking an IMEI before buying a used phone
Ask the seller for the IMEI and check it through an appropriate carrier or recognized device-check service before paying. GSMA Device Check describes a red result as an identifier flagged on the GSMA Block List and a green result as one not currently flagged on that list. A green result is limited: it does not prove the phone is legitimate, unlocked, paid off, compatible with your carrier, or free of account locks. Confirm those points with the seller and carrier.
