A neocloud is a public-cloud provider designed primarily for GPU computing and artificial-intelligence workloads. Instead of offering every enterprise IT service, it concentrates on accelerator capacity, high-speed GPU networking and, in many cases, bare-metal or lightly virtualized access. That specialization can make distributed training, fine-tuning and large inference jobs easier to place or more predictable, but it also leaves your team responsible for more infrastructure work.
AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud also rent GPUs, yet they wrap them in much broader platforms for databases, identity, security, analytics, application hosting and global operations. The practical choice is therefore not “GPUs versus no GPUs.” It is specialized accelerator infrastructure versus a general-purpose managed cloud, judged by performance, availability, total cost, compliance and the amount of platform engineering your team wants to own.
What exactly is a neocloud?
The term describes an AI-first public cloud whose main product is accelerator infrastructure. Microsoft for Startups defines a neocloud as a provider built specifically for GPU compute and AI workloads rather than general-purpose enterprise applications. Cisco describes the same category as specialized infrastructure with dense GPU clusters and high-performance fabrics such as RDMA or RoCE.
“Neocloud” is an industry category, not a universal certification or a fixed technical specification. Providers grouped under the label can use different GPU generations, virtualization models, regions, orchestration tools, service-level agreements and billing rules. A buyer must evaluate the actual cluster, location and contract instead of assuming that every neocloud offers the same experience.

What infrastructure does it emphasize?
- High-density accelerator nodes for model training, fine-tuning and inference.
- Fast GPU-to-GPU interconnects for jobs that distribute work across many accelerators.
- Bare-metal or lightly virtualized access when customers need hardware visibility and predictable performance.
- On-demand capacity and reserved commitments, depending on the provider and GPU type.
The trade-off is control versus convenience. Direct access can reduce virtualization overhead and expose the topology your distributed job needs. In exchange, your team may have to build or operate more of the scheduler, image pipeline, storage path, monitoring, security configuration and software-compatibility layer.
How does a neocloud work for an AI team?
You typically request a GPU instance, a multi-GPU node or a reserved slice of a cluster, then connect it to storage and a software environment. For a single inference service, that may be a straightforward virtual machine or container. For distributed training, the important resources are the complete system: accelerator count, GPU memory, CPU and memory balance, local storage, network fabric and the time you can keep the allocation.
On-demand capacity
On-demand instances let teams experiment, run short fine-tuning jobs or absorb an unexpected inference spike without a long commitment. Availability is not guaranteed simply because a provider advertises a GPU model; popular accelerators can be capacity constrained by region and reservation status.

Reserved capacity
A reservation or committed contract can provide better planning for a recurring training program. It may reduce the effective accelerator rate or guarantee a defined amount of capacity, but it can create waste if your workload schedule, model architecture or GPU requirements change.
Why the network matters
Large training jobs repeatedly exchange gradients and parameters between GPUs. High-bandwidth, low-latency fabrics using technologies such as RDMA or RoCE can improve scaling compared with a generic network path. The benefit depends on the framework, parallelism strategy, message size and how many nodes your job spans; a premium interconnect does not automatically make an inefficient workload fast.
What is the difference between a neocloud and AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud?
AWS, Azure and Google Cloud are hyperscalers: broad public-cloud platforms that happen to include GPU instances and AI services. A neocloud concentrates its product and operations on accelerator capacity. The distinction is specialization and infrastructure depth versus platform breadth and managed services.

Does a hyperscaler always provide a less capable GPU environment?
No. Hyperscalers operate substantial GPU fleets and offer their own AI tooling, networking and managed services. Their advantage is that an accelerator can sit beside object storage, a database, identity controls, observability and deployment services in one account. A specialized provider may offer a better match for a particular accelerator or cluster topology, but the exact result depends on current capacity and configuration.
When is a neocloud the better choice?
Choose a neocloud when accelerator access or cluster performance is the primary constraint and your team can operate a lower-level environment. It is especially relevant when the workload is dominated by training, fine-tuning or high-volume inference rather than by business-application services.
Strong use cases
- Distributed training: Jobs that need many GPUs and benefit from tightly coupled, high-speed interconnects.
- Fine-tuning at burst scale: Teams that need substantial capacity for experiments but do not want to own a permanent cluster.
- Large inference runs: Batch or online workloads whose economics depend mainly on accelerator throughput.
- Hardware-specific software: Projects that require a particular GPU generation, memory size or topology.
- Capacity and price comparisons: Organizations evaluating raw GPU-hour cost and lead time across providers.
Do not compare only the advertised GPU-hour rate. Include attached storage, data transfer, image and container management, orchestration, monitoring, security tooling and the engineering time needed to operate them.
When should you stay with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud?
A hyperscaler is usually the safer fit when AI is one component of a larger production system. If the same application needs managed databases, identity, secrets, policy enforcement, compliance evidence, many regions, centralized observability or established enterprise procurement, the surrounding platform can outweigh a specialist’s accelerator advantage.
Common hyperscaler advantages
- Managed data, application and integration services around the model.
- Established identity, access-control, logging and security products.
- Broader regional coverage and clearer options for data residency.
- Existing contracts, support arrangements and governance processes.
- Less custom work to connect training outputs to a customer-facing application.
Microsoft positions Azure GPU infrastructure and startup credits as a way to combine accelerator access with the rest of a managed platform. That approach can reduce the number of vendors and network paths in an early product, even if a specialist cloud could offer a lower standalone accelerator rate.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIs a neocloud the same as hybrid cloud?
No. A neocloud is a type of public cloud. Hybrid cloud combines private or on-premises infrastructure with public-cloud resources. If you train on a neocloud and deploy the application on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, that is a multi-cloud design. It becomes hybrid only when private infrastructure, such as an organization’s own data center, is also part of the architecture.

What does a practical multi-cloud pattern look like?
A team might send short-lived training jobs to a neocloud, store checkpoints in a controlled object-storage location and deploy the production API beside its existing application services on a hyperscaler. This can balance accelerator availability with enterprise integration, but it introduces data-transfer charges, duplicated monitoring, separate identity models and more complicated incident response.
Which providers are considered neoclouds?
The OECD identifies CoreWeave, Crusoe, Nebius and Lambda Labs as smaller cloud companies focused exclusively on AI compute. A current enterprise buyer guide also lists CoreWeave, Lambda, Nebius and Crusoe as representative examples. These lists are illustrative, not a permanent registry: companies launch, merge, add general-purpose services or change their market focus.
Evaluate each provider’s current offering rather than relying on its category label. Confirm the exact accelerator model, memory, interconnect, supported framework images, region, reservation terms, support response and data-handling commitments.
How should you compare a neocloud with a hyperscaler?
Use a workload-level comparison rather than a headline price list. The following sequence exposes the differences that affect an actual project.
- Specify the job: Record model size, framework, precision, batch size, training duration, inference latency target and expected utilization.
- Define the hardware: List required GPU memory, accelerator count, CPU and RAM ratios, local scratch space and any dependency on a specific GPU generation.
- Measure scaling needs: Determine whether the job is single-node, multi-node or sensitive to GPU-to-GPU latency and bandwidth.
- Check capacity and location: Verify that the required configuration is available in the needed region, and confirm residency and cross-border transfer rules.
- Calculate total cost: Add compute, storage, snapshots, egress, inter-region traffic, orchestration, monitoring, security controls and staff time.
- Assign operational ownership: Decide who patches images, manages drivers, schedules jobs, rotates credentials, audits access and responds to failures.
- Test portability: Package the model, environment and data-movement steps so the workload can move if capacity disappears or pricing changes.
- Run a representative pilot: Measure end-to-end throughput, checkpoint time, failure recovery and utilization, not only a short synthetic benchmark.
Questions to put in a provider contract
- Which GPU models and interconnects are guaranteed, and can the provider substitute hardware?
- What happens when reserved capacity is unavailable or a node fails?
- Are storage and network charges metered separately from accelerator time?
- Which security certifications, audit reports and support channels apply to the selected region?
- Can you export images, checkpoints, logs and metadata without proprietary conversion?
What operational pitfalls should you expect?
Specialization does not remove complexity; it moves more of it into your environment. Driver and CUDA compatibility, container images, distributed-training configuration and checkpoint recovery can become your responsibility. A cluster that looks inexpensive per GPU hour can cost more if utilization is low or if engineers spend substantial time keeping the platform healthy.
Capacity risk
GPU supply can be tight. Keep a fallback configuration, maintain tested images for a second provider or hyperscaler and schedule long jobs with checkpointing so an interruption does not erase days of work.

Data-movement risk
Moving large datasets and checkpoints between clouds can add delay and egress charges. Place frequently accessed data near the training cluster, define an authoritative copy and document how encrypted transfers are authenticated.
Security and compliance risk
Bare-metal access can provide useful isolation and visibility, but it does not automatically satisfy security requirements. You still need network segmentation, least-privilege identities, secrets management, image scanning, audit logs and a documented incident process.
Software portability risk
Pin driver and framework versions, record topology assumptions and test recovery on a clean allocation. Avoid embedding provider-specific paths in training code unless the performance benefit is measured and accepted as a portability trade-off.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How important is the market outlook?
Gartner forecast in 2026 that neocloud providers could capture 20% of the $267 billion AI-cloud market by 2030. The figure signals that specialized infrastructure may become a significant segment, not that it will replace hyperscalers. Broad clouds are likely to remain important wherever AI is embedded in a larger enterprise platform.
For a buyer, the forecast matters less than current capacity, contractual guarantees and the economics of the specific workload. Treat market-share projections as context, not as a substitute for a technical and financial evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a small startup use a neocloud without a platform team?
Yes, if the provider supplies usable images, scheduling and support, but the startup still needs someone responsible for drivers, access control, data movement, monitoring and recovery. A hyperscaler’s managed services may be simpler when the team is building the product and not infrastructure.
Are neocloud GPUs always cheaper than hyperscaler GPUs?
No. A lower accelerator rate can be offset by storage, egress, orchestration, support and engineering costs. Compare the total cost of completing the workload at its required throughput and reliability.

Can I run Kubernetes on a neocloud?
Many providers support containerized or Kubernetes-based environments, but the exact control plane, networking integration and managed-service scope differ. Confirm who operates the control plane and which GPU drivers, device plugins and observability integrations are supported.
What happens to my model checkpoints if I leave a neocloud?
Exportability depends on where checkpoints and metadata are stored and whether the environment uses provider-specific formats. Keep checkpoints in a portable format, document the software environment and test restoration outside the original account before you need to migrate.
