A long screenshot is one tall, static image that extends below the visible screen to include more of a scrollable webpage, conversation, document, or app. Instead of taking and sending several images, your device or software scrolls through the content and saves one file. Depending on the platform, the feature may be called scrolling screenshot, capture more, full-page screenshot, or scroll capture.
What a long screenshot captures
A normal screenshot records only the current viewport. A long screenshot continues beyond that viewport, combining the sections revealed during scrolling into a single image. It is useful for a complete article, a receipt, a support conversation, a settings page, or a design that is taller than the display.
The result is normally an image that you can save, edit, send, or upload. Some tools offer a PDF instead, which can be easier to print or search. A long screenshot is not a screen recording: it contains no motion and does not show the act of scrolling.

Long captures can become difficult to read as their height grows. For a very long document, several focused images or a PDF may communicate the information better.

How to take a long screenshot on Android
Google documents scrolling screenshots for devices running Android 12 and up on most screens that allow scrolling. The button name and its location depend on the phone maker’s Android skin.
- Open the webpage, conversation, document, or app screen you want to capture.
- Take a normal screenshot with your phone’s screenshot shortcut, usually Power plus Volume Down.
- Look at the screenshot controls and tap Capture more, Scroll, Scrolling screenshot, or a similar control.
- Extend the selection to the point you need. Some phones let you drag an endpoint; others continue scrolling automatically.
- Tap Save, Done, or the equivalent action, then share the resulting image.
If no scrolling control appears, the current surface may not expose additional content, the app may block extended capture, or the phone may use a different label. Try the same steps in a browser page that clearly continues below the screen to distinguish a device limitation from an app limitation.
Android-specific considerations
- The Android version matters: Google’s documented procedure starts with Android 12.
- Manufacturer interfaces can move the control into an overflow menu or use a different icon.
- Protected, dynamically rendered, or nonstandard interfaces may stop the capture early or produce an incomplete image.
- Check the bottom of the preview before saving; an automatic capture can extend farther than intended.
How to take a long screenshot on iPhone
On supported content, iPhone exposes a Full Page option in the screenshot editor. Apple’s documented example is an entire webpage in Safari; the option is not a universal mode for every app.

- Open the webpage or other supported content.
- Take a screenshot with the iPhone button shortcut for your model.
- Tap the thumbnail that appears in the lower-left corner.
- At the top of the editor, choose Full Page instead of Screen when that tab is offered.
- Review the tall preview, use the available save or share command, and choose where to store it.
When Full Page is missing, the app or content does not provide an extended capture in that context. A Safari webpage is the clearest test because that is the use case Apple documents.

Microsoft’s documented Snipping Tool modes for Windows 10 and Windows 11 are Freeform, Rectangle, Window, Full screen, and Video snip. They do not include a scrolling or full-page mode. A long webpage therefore needs a browser-specific full-page command or another utility.
Use a browser’s full-page command
- Open the page and wait for its content to finish loading.
- Open the browser’s developer or capture tools and choose its full-page screenshot action, if available. The label and keyboard path vary by browser and version.
- Let the browser render the entire page, then select PNG, JPEG, or PDF according to your purpose.
- Open the saved file and inspect the top, middle, and bottom for missing lazy-loaded images, duplicated sections, or fixed headers repeated throughout.
Browser capture behavior is page-dependent. Infinite-scroll feeds may stop at the currently loaded boundary, while animated or script-heavy pages can shift during capture.

Use a desktop utility when the browser cannot capture the page
Third-party utilities can provide scrolling capture where the operating system or browser does not. Wired has named ShareX for Windows and Shottr for macOS as examples. Compatibility, supported applications, and pricing can change, so verify those details for your operating-system version before installing one.
Manual fallback
For a surface that defeats automated scrolling, take overlapping viewport screenshots, keep a small visual overlap between each image, and join them in an editor. Turn off animations when possible and avoid scrolling by inconsistent distances; both reduce visible seams. Manual stitching takes longer and can duplicate fixed navigation bars, but it works when no native capture exists.

Why the scrolling option is missing
- There is nothing below the viewport: The control appears only when the current surface exposes additional scrollable content.
- The app does not support extended capture: Try the same content in a supported browser or use separate screenshots.
- The page is protected: Banking, streaming, secure-workspace, and other protected interfaces may restrict capture.
- The content is dynamic: Infinite scroll, lazy loading, ads, and animations can move the page while it is being captured. Wait for images to load, disable motion where possible, and capture in smaller sections.
- The device or app is outdated: On Android, confirm that the phone is running Android 12 or newer; on iPhone, test a Safari page where Full Page is documented.
- The image is too large: Stop at a logical endpoint, reduce the output dimensions, or switch to a PDF or several focused images.
Quality, privacy, and sharing checks
Check the edges
Inspect the first and last sections, not just the middle. Look for clipped text, duplicated sticky navigation, unloaded images, and a capture that ends before the final message or paragraph.
Protect sensitive information
Long captures can expose account numbers, private messages, addresses, or internal URLs that were spread across multiple screens. Crop or redact before sharing, and avoid sending credentials or session data to a capture service unless your policy allows it.
Choose a readable format
Use an image when recipients need a quick visual reference. Use a PDF for printing or page-oriented review. If a single image becomes an extremely narrow strip on a phone or difficult to navigate on a desktop, divide it at meaningful sections instead.

- Need one static file from a phone app? Use Android scrolling capture or iPhone Full Page when the control is offered.
- Need a desktop webpage? Use the browser’s full-page command or a desktop utility; Windows Snipping Tool alone does not provide scrolling capture.
- Need a page that fails native capture? Try a browser, then manual stitching with overlaps.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a long screenshot the same as a screen recording?
No. It is a single static image (or, in some workflows, a PDF) assembled from scrollable content; it does not contain motion or playback.
Can I make a long screenshot of content that never scrolls?
No native scrolling control is expected when the current surface has no additional scrollable content. Capture the visible screen normally or combine separate images if you need a larger composition.
Why can one page produce different results on different devices?
Capture support depends on the operating-system version, manufacturer interface, app, rendering method, and whether content loads or moves while the capture runs.
