“Cistercian clock” can mean two different things: a modern clock that displays time with Cistercian numerals, or a historic clock associated with a Cistercian abbey. The numeral-based clock is a maker’s project; the Mogiła Abbey clock is a medieval dial identified through architectural and archaeological evidence. The abbey dial is not shown to use Cistercian numerals.
What is a Cistercian clock?
There is no single object established by that phrase. One possible meaning is a contemporary clock display using Cistercian numerals. Another is the historic clock dial at Mogiła Abbey in Kraków, Poland. They are related by the Cistercian name, but the evidence describes different things: a modern maker’s project and a scholarly interpretation of a medieval architectural feature.
| Meaning | What it describes | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Modern numeral clock | A clock project displaying time with Cistercian numerals | A maker shared project files; a finished product or commercial availability is not established. |
| Mogiła Abbey clock | A circular feature interpreted as a medieval clock dial | Architectural and archaeological evidence supports the interpretation; the mechanism’s operation remains a reconstruction. |
How do Cistercian numerals work?
Cistercian numerals are not Roman numerals. A glyph is built around a shared vertical or horizontal stave. Marks in four regions encode the units, tens, hundreds, and thousands places; combined on one stave, they can represent an integer from 1 through 9,999. That is the notation’s capacity, not a specification for every clock using it. Wikipedia’s reference page on Cistercian numerals describes the construction and its historical variations.
The system is attributed to the Cistercian order and is dated to the early thirteenth century. Manuscripts show variations in some digit forms and in the stave’s orientation, so a modern diagram should not be mistaken for the only form used in the Middle Ages.

Historical uses
Historical examples include years, page numbering, text divisions, notes, lists, indexes, concordances, Easter tables, and musical notation. In those cited contexts, the numerals were not used for arithmetic, fractions, or accounting. The reference page names David A. King’s The Ciphers of the Monks: A Forgotten Number-notation of the Middle Ages as further reading; it is a book about the notation, not a clock manual.
The modern Cistercian numeral clock project
A maker posting as bigcrimping_com shared a project called “Cistercian Numeral clock,” describing the aim as telling time compactly. The post links PCB, schematic, 3D-print, and code files. It establishes that a maker shared a project and files—not that a finished clock is sold, tested as a product, or broadly adopted. See the maker’s project post.

The medieval clock dial at Mogiła Abbey
Michael J. Czajkowski’s scholarly chapter, “The Mogiła Abbey Clock Dial, Kraków, Poland and its Relationship to Medieval Clockwork,” examines a circular feature about four metres in diameter at the Cistercian Abbey of Mogiła. It interprets the feature as a medieval clock dial on the basis of archaeological and architectural evidence. This is a scholarly interpretation of a physical trace, not evidence that the dial used Cistercian numeral glyphs.

Czajkowski writes: “It was important for the Cistercian order to know the time of day in order to know the time when the church services Prime, Tierce, Nones, Vespers and Compline, should be sung.” The chapter explains the practical value of timekeeping for the monastic schedule. Because contemporary records from the relevant period are lacking, the clock’s mechanism and its history have to be reconstructed; proposed details of how it operated remain hypotheses. Read Czajkowski’s chapter in the 2016 scholarly volume from Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University.

Without a particular image or other identifying context, the phrase remains ambiguous. A numeral face or a link to circuit and design files points to the modern project; a discussion of a circular feature at a Kraków abbey points to the Mogiła dial. Neither should be used as proof for claims about the other.
