Inclusive games for women make women playable, consequential characters; give them room to speak and shape the story; and make online play safe enough to enjoy with other people. That is not a niche standard: women are 46 percent of U.S. players, according to the Entertainment Software Association’s 2026 figures, and Bryter’s 2025 briefing says women make up 48 percent of gamers worldwide. Yet women remain a minority of game characters, and harassment still drives some players to hide their identity, leave matches, or avoid titles. Inclusion therefore has to work both on screen and in the community around the game.

What does it mean for a video game to be inclusive for women?

An inclusive game does more than put a woman on its cover. It lets women play, lead, speak, make consequential choices, and occupy different kinds of roles without reducing them to a stereotype. It also treats women as full participants in multiplayer spaces, with reporting and moderation that work in practice.

Three questions help separate meaningful inclusion from a token gesture:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Who is represented? Are women present in the cast, including as playable characters and protagonists?
  • What can they do? Do they have agency, meaningful dialogue, varied motivations, and influence over events?
  • Can they participate safely? Do voice chat, in-game reports, community spaces, and enforcement make social play usable rather than costly?

These questions are related but not interchangeable. A game may have a compelling woman protagonist and still have an abusive voice-chat culture. A game may offer character customization but give women little narrative weight. A useful standard considers the whole experience.

Are there enough female characters in games?

No. Women are close to half of players, but available measures show substantial gaps in character presence and leading roles. The numbers vary by sample and measure, so player share, character share, protagonist share, and dialogue share should not be treated as the same statistic.

Measure Finding What it tells us
U.S. player share Women are 46% of U.S. players (ESA, 2026). Women are a large part of the audience.
Character share Girls and women make up about 20% of characters in Geena Davis Institute (GDI) Playbook spotlight figures. On-screen representation lags behind player share.
Cover and in-game visibility In a Spanish analysis of 313 characters, women appeared in 17.78% of analyzed covers and 35.29% of in-game audiovisual content. Visibility differs depending on where and how characters are counted.
Protagonists among highly rated 2025 games Among VGTimes’ 120 Metacritic-best games of 2025, 15% had female protagonists, compared with 38.3% with male protagonists; 33.3% offered gender choice or mixed casts. A female protagonist remains less common than a male one in this sample.

Steam’s “Female Protagonist” tag covered more than 2,260 games by the 2026 VGTimes analysis of SteamDB, but those titles were still only about 10 percent of Steam releases in 2025. A growing catalogue is progress, not evidence that representation is already balanced.

The same distinction applies to blockbuster examples. Aloy in Horizon Forbidden West and Ellie in The Last of Us Part II occupy female-protagonist cover positions in the Spanish analysis. Those visible leads matter, but a single heroine does not tell us whether women appear across the cast, speak as much as men, or can be played on equal terms.

Why does representation need agency, not just visibility?

Presence becomes inclusion when characters can affect what happens. A woman who appears only as a prize, victim, sidekick, or symbolic exception is visible but not necessarily treated as a full character.

Susanna Pollack, president of Games for Change, puts the distinction plainly: “Representation in games isn’t just about visibility—it’s about agency.” Agency can mean leading a mission, making a difficult decision, changing the outcome, or having motives that are not defined solely by a relationship with a man. It also means women can be funny, flawed, ambitious, vulnerable, antagonistic, ordinary, or heroic—not just the designated “strong female character.”

Research on covers in mainstream Spanish titles found that 85.29 percent of characters shown as dominant were male. Women were more often shown in submissive positions, and no woman on the analyzed covers appeared in the mature age range of 50 or older. These are findings from that particular catalogue, not a count of every game, but they illustrate how visual framing can keep women peripheral even when they are present.

Inclusive design also avoids treating gender choice as the only solution. Customization can help players see themselves in a game, but a customizable avatar does not substitute for women with distinct personalities and roles in a scripted story. Bryter’s 2025 survey found that three in four women wanted games to reflect who they are through customization, playstyle, or meaningful choices. Those are complementary routes to identification, not a checklist where one feature cancels out the others.

Why are female characters oversexualized?

Oversexualization is a recurring design pattern in which women’s bodies, clothing, or poses are emphasized for appeal rather than character, context, or function. It can make women seem designed to be looked at rather than to act within the game world.

A GDI analysis of 684 fifteen-minute segments from the top 20 Twitch streamers in October 2020 found female characters were nearly 13 times more likely than male characters to wear revealing clothing: 25 percent versus 2 percent. In Bryter’s 2023 survey, 68 percent of women respondents felt female characters were often oversexualized. A 2026 systematic review in Frontiers, covering 100 articles across 13 years, likewise describes exaggerated features, revealing cosmetics, and suggestive poses as recurring patterns.

Sexuality or attractive design is not automatically exclusionary. The issue is unequal treatment and lack of context: are women designed with the same range of body types, clothing choices, ages, and narrative purposes as men? Does an outfit make sense for the character’s environment and activity, or is she held to a different visual standard? Does she have a role beyond being desirable? A design can be stylish without making sexual availability the default signal for women characters.

Representation gaps also overlap. The GDI Playbook spotlight figures report that nearly nine in 10 leading characters are white, 0.03 percent of characters were identified as LGBTQIA+, and 0.1 percent were shown with a physical disability, despite 31 percent of players having a disability. ESA’s 2026 survey says 11 percent of U.S. players aged 18 or older identify as LGBT+. Women are not a single audience, and inclusion that only imagines one kind of woman leaves others out.

How can you tell whether a game’s story treats women equally?

Look beyond the protagonist and ask whether women have comparable presence, names, dialogue, and opportunities to be playable. EDHEC’s gender-parity test provides a practical way to make that assessment across four dimensions.

  1. Are there equal numbers of female and male characters in the script?
  2. Are there equal numbers of named female and male characters?
  3. Do female and male characters speak an equal number of words?
  4. Are there equal numbers of playable female and male characters?

Fewer than 2 percent of 160 commercially important titles released from 1988 to 2025 passed all four tests, according to EDHEC’s Diversity & Inclusion Chair. The corpus represents 1.4 billion copies sold, about 14,700 characters, and more than 6.5 million spoken words. The test does not capture every dimension of good writing, but it helps show why a woman on the poster is not the same as parity across a game’s story and play.

EDHEC’s analysis illustrates the range: Grand Theft Auto V, with 230 million copies sold, met none of the four criteria; female representation was 0–28 percent. Red Dead Redemption II, with 87 million copies sold, also met none, with representation at 0–16 percent. Skyrim, with 65 million copies sold, met one criterion, with representation at 28–50 percent. Sales success alone does not establish whether a story includes women equally.

When women are allowed into positions of power, the writing still matters. EDHEC researcher Florine Gallois says the disparities “are not a matter of narrative chance” and reflect a culture more inclined to associate male characters with action and power. A stronger story gives women their own aims and conflicts, lets them speak to other women about more than men, and makes their decisions matter. It does not reserve family, motherhood, or growing up as niche material outside supposedly universal stories.

Women’s tastes should not be reduced to a genre stereotype, either. Bryter reports that 66 percent of women seek immersive worlds and engaging stories. The same briefing says women’s play since 2020 rose in battle royale by 22 percent, sports by 12 percent, shooters by 8 percent, and fighting games by 8 percent. Those figures do not mean every woman wants the same kind of game; they do make the claim that women only play “cosy” games untenable.

How do you make gaming communities safer for women?

Safer communities require more than telling players to mute someone or “just block and move on.” Players need clear ways to report abuse, credible follow-up, and consequences that are visible enough to establish community norms.

The scale of the problem has shifted but not disappeared. Bryter reported that 72 percent of women gamers in its U.S. and U.K. sample had experienced toxicity in 2022, and 62 percent did not report toxic behavior that year. The reported toxicity figure was 65 percent in 2023 and 59 percent in 2024. Bryter’s 2025 briefing says reports had declined 14 percent from the 2022 peak, but one in three women still experienced toxicity regularly; its key statistic says 58 percent of women gamers had experienced toxicity from men in gaming spaces. These figures come from different survey editions and wordings, so they should be read as a sequence of separate snapshots, not a single directly comparable global trend.

Harassment can be severe. Women in Games CEO Dr. Marie-Claire Isaaman, citing Bryter in a 2025 GamesIndustry.biz report, said 59 percent of girls and women in online play spaces faced verbal abuse, harassment, exclusion, or worse; 26 percent had been sexually harassed and 12 percent had received rape threats. Only about a third felt current reporting and moderation processes were effective. Bryter’s 2023 report also found 24 percent of women had left a game entirely and 24 percent avoided certain titles because of toxicity.

When safety tools fail, players adapt by narrowing their participation: turning off voice chat, concealing their gender, avoiding multiplayer, or leaving matches. A Spanish youth study found that 46.7 percent of players, particularly women, concealed their identity to avoid harassment. These coping strategies may reduce exposure for an individual, but they transfer the burden from the people causing harm to the people trying to play.

Community design should therefore make safety part of the product, including on Discord, Twitch, guild or clan spaces, and in-game chat—not only in a code of conduct hidden in a menu. Useful standards include:

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  • Reporting players can trust: Explain what can be reported and what happens next. Bryter found that lack of consequences was a reason many women did not report.
  • Visible, proportionate enforcement: Apply rules consistently and communicate action without exposing the person who reported abuse.
  • Voice alternatives: Do not make voice chat the only practical route to coordination when it can also be a channel for harassment.
  • Moderation beyond the game client: Treat community servers, broadcasts, and organized play as part of the player experience.
  • Intersectional safeguards: Bryter’s 2024 findings say LGBTQ+ and ethnic-minority players are even more likely to experience toxicity, so moderation cannot focus on gender alone.

These measures matter because social play is not a minor extra. Six in ten women in Bryter’s 2025 survey said gaming was an important part of their social life. A safe community preserves that value; a game that is inclusive on screen but unusable in voice chat does not deliver the full experience.

Does who makes a game affect whether it includes women?

Workforce composition does not determine a game’s content by itself, but a narrow team can miss assumptions that a more varied team might question. EDHEC’s Guergana Guintcheva says under-representation on screen mirrors under-representation behind the scenes; she also warns that a homogeneous team can create characters that resemble itself or produce unrepresentative or sexualized women without intending to.

Women were 25 percent of game developers in the GDC 2025 State of the Game Industry survey, according to GamesIndustry.biz. A separate figure from AWIS, citing the same GDC report, groups women and nonbinary developers together at 32 percent. These are different categories and should not be collapsed. In France, Women in Games France reported that women made up 20 percent of studio workforces, down four percentage points over three years, as cited by EDHEC.

EDHEC researchers discuss a commonly used 30 percent threshold below which a minority perspective can be harder to voice in a group. That is a group-dynamics finding cited in their discussion, not a measurement that proves a specific studio’s output. The practical implication is to build teams and review processes where people can challenge defaults, and to include women in leadership and decision-making—not to assume that hiring alone guarantees a particular story.

Studios can use structured reflection as well as team diversity. The free GDI Playbook at GDIPlaybook.org offers case histories, interactive modules, and guidance across gender, race and ethnicity, LGBTQIA+ identity, age, body type, and disability. It is intended as a learning resource rather than a scorecard. The goal is not to bolt diversity onto a finished game, but to consider representation while characters, narrative, and systems are being designed.

Why does inclusion matter to players and studios?

Inclusion matters because it affects who can see a place for themselves in a game and whether they want to play it. In a 2025 GDI/Nielsen survey of U.S. and U.K. players, 63 percent said they were more likely to play a game that included women as playable characters: 68 percent of women and 60 percent of men. The figure rose to 72 percent among respondents aged 18–24. Separately, 47 percent said they were less likely to play a game that used gender stereotypes.

These are stated preferences, not a guarantee that adding a character will produce sales. They do show that inclusion is not simply a trade-off against entertainment. The ESA says women are 46 percent of U.S. players, while Bryter’s briefing says women’s average weekly PC and console play rose from seven hours in 2018 to 15 hours in 2024. Players are already present across genres and spending time in games; studios that treat them as peripheral risk making stories and communities that fit fewer of their audience.

Inclusive design is also broader than gender. GDI/Nielsen found that 64 percent of U.S. and U.K. respondents were more likely to play when characters were more diverse than they usually saw, and 62 percent were more likely when playable characters were diverse. Representation should be part of making an engaging world, not a separate feature attached after the creative decisions are settled.

What should players look for when judging a game?

No single badge or protagonist can certify that a game is inclusive. Consider these questions together:

  • Can women be played, and are they as capable and consequential as male characters?
  • Do women have names, dialogue, motivations, and relationships that matter to the plot?
  • Are their designs varied and appropriate to their roles, rather than consistently sexualized or submissive?
  • Does the game offer meaningful choices or customization without making that the only route to representation?
  • Can players use social features without having to hide their identity or tolerate abuse?
  • Do reporting and moderation lead to credible action across the game and its associated spaces?

A “yes” to one question does not erase a “no” to another. This is why a woman protagonist can be an important advance without proving parity—and why a game with a mixed cast can still need better moderation. Inclusion is a set of connected design decisions, not a one-time casting choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a female protagonist enough to make a game inclusive?

No. A lead character is meaningful representation, but it says little by itself about the rest of the cast, dialogue balance, character agency, or whether online spaces are safe. Looking at those elements together gives a fuller picture.

Does inclusive character design mean every character needs customization?

No. Customization is one way to help players identify with a game, but authored characters can also offer varied, well-developed representation. The important distinction is whether women have meaningful roles and choices, not whether every title uses the same feature.

Why do some women avoid calling themselves gamers?

Bryter found the share of women who would not describe themselves as gamers fell from 38 percent in 2019 to 24 percent in 2025, while Pew teen figures cited by AWIS show a persistent identity gap: 62 percent of boys but 17 percent of girls called themselves gamers. Participation and feeling welcomed into the label are not the same thing.

Can game studios improve inclusion without changing the story?

They can improve community systems, moderation, and access to social play, but that addresses only part of inclusion. Likewise, a well-written story does not fix harassment; narrative choices and community safeguards solve different problems.
