Immich Workflows can replace scripts that apply predictable, internal library rules after an asset arrives, but they are not a universal replacement for code. Introduced as a preview in v3.0.0, Workflows chain triggers, filters and actions in a visual builder or JSON editor. If a script calls an outside service, transforms data Immich cannot transform, keeps complex state or relies on an API endpoint without a Workflow equivalent, you still need code.
The headline claim that the feature “killed” months of scripting is an operator’s account, not a published measurement of retirement or maintenance savings. The documented change is concrete: routine Immich-only rules can move into a first-party automation layer, while bespoke integrations remain scripts.
What changed in Immich v3.0.0?
Immich introduced Workflows in v3.0.0, released July 1, 2026. The feature is explicitly described as a preview for automating library actions by chaining triggers, filters and actions. You can construct a flow with a drag-and-drop editor or exchange it as JSON, which makes the same rule usable in a deployment configuration or a review process.
Immich’s release notes describe the feature this way: “Workflows let you automate actions in your library by chaining triggers, filters, and actions together with a drag-and-drop builder.” Read the v3.0.0 release notes for the version-specific caveats and other breaking changes.

| Milestone | What it means |
|---|---|
| v3.0.0 — July 1, 2026 | Workflows arrived as a preview feature with visual and JSON editing. |
| v3.2.0 | An asset-tag trigger and a tag filter were added. Tag matching supports all, any and none modes. |
| Roadmap entry — July 2, 2026 | The roadmap marks Workflows as delivered with v3.0.0. The one-day difference from the release-note date is a publication-date discrepancy, not a separate feature release. |
Workflows are therefore a moving feature rather than a frozen automation API. Treat the release version and the date attached to the documentation as part of every migration record.
Can Immich Workflows replace my scripts?
They can replace a script when the script’s entire job is to react to an Immich event, apply conditions that Workflows understand and invoke an action Immich already exposes. A script that only labels or routes assets inside Immich is the best candidate. A script that crosses system boundaries or implements its own state machine is not.
| Decision axis | Legacy script | Workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger coverage | Can poll, receive webhooks or call an endpoint, provided you implement the mechanism. | Limited to the triggers exposed by the installed Immich version; v3.2.0 adds an asset-tag trigger. |
| Filter expressiveness | Any condition you can code, including custom lookups and calculated values. | Uses the available filter blocks; tag matching now offers all, any and none. |
| Supported actions | Can call Immich, shell commands or any service reachable by the runtime. | Can invoke only actions provided by the Workflow implementation. |
| External-service support | Native to the script if credentials, networking and client code are maintained. | No equivalent exists unless the installed Workflow action explicitly supports that service. |
| Statefulness | You can persist queues, checkpoints, deduplication keys and other custom state. | Suitable for stateless rules; custom state is a reason to retain code. |
| Observability and failure handling | You define logs, retries, alerts and recovery behavior. | Behavior depends on the preview’s built-in execution and administration features; do not assume script-level controls. |
| Portability and version control | Source code, dependencies and runtime must be packaged. | JSON export gives you a compact definition to review and version with deployment configuration. |
| Upgrade risk | Immich API changes can break calls; the v3.0.0 notes warn that many API endpoints and third-party tools have breaking changes. | First-party flows avoid an HTTP client for the covered path, but preview behavior and available blocks can change between releases. |
A hybrid setup is usually the least fragile: let Immich handle deterministic library housekeeping and keep a narrowly scoped script for the parts that genuinely need a boundary, transformation or durable state.

Workflows are not the same thing as Immich’s internal job pipeline. After an upload, Immich can queue metadata extraction, thumbnail generation, machine-learning tasks and storage-template migration when that migration is enabled. Scheduled jobs, including memory generation, run nightly by default and can be configured in the administration settings. The jobs and workers documentation lists the pipeline and its configuration.
This distinction identifies scripts that are safe to retire. If your process merely waits for an upload and repeats an Immich-supported job that the server already schedules, the script may be duplicate orchestration. If it adds a rule—such as selecting assets by a condition and then invoking a supported library action—a Workflow may express that rule without a separate runtime.
Do not infer that every background operation is a Workflow action. Jobs are internal workers; Workflows are a rule layer. Verify that the specific action appears in the Workflow editor for your installed version before deleting code.

How do Immich Workflows work?
A Workflow is a chain in which a trigger starts evaluation, filters decide whether the asset continues and actions perform the resulting operation. The visual builder is intended for construction, while the JSON editor and sharing support make the definition inspectable and portable.
Choose a trigger
Start with the event your rule already watches. In v3.2.0, an asset-tag trigger is available in addition to the triggers shipped earlier. Because Workflows are a preview, record the exact trigger name and version in your configuration notes.
Add filters
Filters narrow the trigger’s input. For tags, the v3.2.0 filter can require all selected tags, match any selected tag or exclude assets carrying any of them with the none mode. Use the narrowest condition that matches the old script; broad filters can replay actions on assets you did not intend to touch.
Select supported actions
Add only actions that the editor exposes in your server version. A script may have called an undocumented endpoint or chained a shell command; those steps do not become supported merely because the trigger and filter can be recreated.
Save and export the definition
Keep the JSON representation with the rest of your deployment configuration. A visual flow is convenient to edit, but a versioned JSON file lets you review changes, restore a known-good definition and compare behavior after an upgrade.

Migrate one rule at a time. The goal is not to translate every line of code; it is to separate the part Immich can own from the part that still requires a runtime.

- Inventory the script. Write down its trigger, every filter, each action, external calls, credentials, persistent state, retry policy and failure notification. Note whether it calls a documented API endpoint or relies on an undocumented response shape.
- Mark the Immich-only path. Circle steps that only inspect or modify assets in Immich. Those are candidates for Workflows. Mark network calls, file transformations, database writes, custom queues and stateful decisions as code-dependent until you prove an equivalent action exists.
- Rebuild the smallest equivalent flow. In the Workflow editor, add the matching trigger, reproduce conditions with current filters and choose the supported action. Do not add “future” behavior based on a roadmap item or on an action visible only in another version.
- Export the JSON. Give the file a versioned name that includes the Immich release and keep it beside your compose files or other deployment configuration. Store secrets outside the JSON; the definition should describe logic, not embed credentials.
- Run both paths on a controlled scope. Use a small test library, newly uploaded test assets or a non-destructive action where possible. Compare which assets each path selects, whether an action runs more than once and what happens when a filter is not satisfied.
- Retire only the proven portion. Disable the duplicate script after the Workflow produces the expected result. Keep the code for any external or stateful branch, and document the boundary so a future maintainer knows why it remains.
If the old script performs several unrelated jobs, split the migration. One narrowly defined Workflow is easier to test and roll back than a single flow that tries to reproduce an entire application.
Which scripts should I keep?
Keep code when the required behavior is outside Immich’s current trigger, filter or action vocabulary. The following cases are strong reasons not to force a migration:
- External services: sending data to a service, calling a notification provider, synchronizing with another catalog or starting a remote job.
- Transformations: transcoding, renaming with a custom algorithm, generating sidecar files or modifying content before Immich can process it.
- Complex state: waiting for several independent events, maintaining a queue, implementing deduplication across runs or applying a rule that depends on historical decisions.
- Unsupported actions: any operation for which the Workflow editor has no corresponding action in your installed release.
- API-specific integrations: scripts that use endpoints, fields or response formats not represented by a first-party block.
Immich’s v3.0.0 release notes call out breaking changes affecting many API endpoints and third-party tools. An API integration can remain valuable, but it must be treated as an upgrade-sensitive component rather than assumed to be stable.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How should I test a Workflow before deleting the script?
Testing should prove selection, effects and recovery—not just that the builder accepts the flow.
- Selection: feed the flow assets that should match, should not match and sit on the boundary between the two cases.
- Idempotence: run the same event twice and check that the action does not create duplicate tags, records or downstream work.
- Ordering: verify that the trigger occurs after the metadata or machine-learning result your filter depends on. If the old script waited for a job, reproduce that prerequisite explicitly or keep the script.
- Failure behavior: interrupt a dependency or supply an invalid case and record whether the Workflow stops, retries or silently skips. Preserve the old alerting path if the preview does not provide an adequate replacement.
- Rollback: export the last known-good JSON and keep the old script disabled but recoverable until the test window is complete.
Parallel operation is safest when the action is non-destructive. For destructive or irreversible actions, test against a disposable library or use a condition that limits the flow to a controlled set of assets.
What does an Immich upgrade mean for Workflows and scripts?
Immich’s upgrade documentation says the project is under very active development, warns to expect bugs and changes and says not to use it as the only way to store your photos and videos. Read the release notes before every upgrade, especially a major one, then re-check both Workflow behavior and API-dependent scripts.

For a Docker installation, the documented update sequence is:
docker compose pulldocker compose up -d
These commands update the images and recreate the services using your compose configuration; they do not validate that a preview Workflow still selects the same assets. After the containers return, run a regression set containing representative tags, albums and upload cases, then inspect any script that calls an Immich endpoint. Follow the official upgrade guidance for prerequisites and version-specific instructions.
Keep Workflow JSON under version control and record the Immich version beside it. If a release changes a trigger, filter or action, you can identify which definition was deployed and restore the previous one while you investigate.
What happened to my automation after v3?
Nothing automatically converts a pre-v3 script into a Workflow. Existing scripts continue to run on their own schedule or event mechanism until you disable them, but an API change can still break them. The practical change is that you now have a first-party destination for the subset of rules that fit the Workflow model.
Review each script rather than performing a wholesale rewrite. A script that only applied an Immich-supported action can be reduced to a Workflow; a script that also called outside systems should be split, not erased.

Are Immich Workflows ready for every production rule?
No. Immich labels Workflows a preview feature, and the project’s rapid development makes release-note review and regression checks part of normal operation. That does not make the feature unusable; it means you should constrain its role and retain a rollback path.

Move a rule now when
- Its trigger, filters and action are all visible in your installed editor.
- It has no external side effect or custom state.
- You can test it on a small or non-destructive scope.
- The JSON definition can be backed up with your deployment files.
Keep the script when
- It integrates another service or performs a transformation Immich does not expose.
- Its correctness depends on custom retries, durable state or undocumented API behavior.
- You cannot observe or recover a failed run with the preview’s available controls.
The sensible endpoint is not “no scripts.” It is fewer scripts, each reserved for behavior that a first-party library rule cannot express.
Frequently asked questions
Can Workflows create smart albums or smart memories?
Those capabilities are still listed as future automation items on Immich’s roadmap. Do not design a migration around them until a release documents an implemented trigger or action.
Can I share a Workflow with another Immich installation?
The editor supports JSON sharing, so a definition can be reviewed or transferred as configuration rather than rebuilt by hand. Test the imported flow against the recipient’s Immich version because preview blocks and behavior are version-sensitive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo Workflows remove the need to monitor scheduled jobs?
No. Scheduled workers and Workflows are separate subsystems. A Workflow can add a rule around library events, while metadata extraction, thumbnails, machine-learning work and nightly memory generation still depend on the job pipeline and its administration settings.
Should I keep a backup while migrating automation?
Yes. Keep your original script, its configuration and a known-good Workflow JSON until parallel testing is finished. Immich’s own upgrade warning advises against treating the server as the only copy of your photos and videos, so automation migration should not be your backup strategy.
