The Selfish Ledger was an internal Google design video made in 2016 that imagined a system using personal data to shape choices and pass patterns between generations. After The Verge reported on the nine-minute film in May 2018, an X spokesperson described it as a speculative thought experiment—not a current or planned product.
What is The Selfish Ledger?
The Selfish Ledger is a speculative design video made internally at Google in late 2016. The Verge reported on it on May 17, 2018, after obtaining the film. The report identifies Nick Foster, then head of design at Google’s X lab and a co-founder of Near Future Laboratory, as its maker. The transcript credits Foster and David Murphy as writers.
The title is an homage to Richard Dawkins’ 1976 book The Selfish Gene, according to The Verge’s report. That reference frames the film’s metaphor; it does not mean Dawkins endorsed the project.
How does the video imagine the data ledger working?
The film describes a changing record of a person’s actions, decisions, preferences, movements, and relationships as a “ledger.” Rather than treating it only as a history of what someone has done, the narration asks, “What if the ledger could be given a volitional purpose, rather than simply acting as a historical reference?” The transcript is available at Rev’s transcript.

- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro XL; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
From record-keeping to steering choices
In the scenario, a ledger could be given a goal, compare a person’s choices with that goal, and suggest options meant to move the person toward it. The video raises the possibility of a system that does more than organize data: it could influence which choices seem useful or relevant. The narration does not establish whether goals would always be chosen by the individual or how much control a system might have over that direction.
Finding gaps in the data
The film also imagines a system noticing information it does not have and selecting a device to fill the gap. The Verge’s example is a bathroom scale; the video also mentions a custom object made with 3D printing. These are hypothetical illustrations in the scenario, not identified products or recommendations.

Reusing patterns across generations
The ledger’s record is imagined as something that could be useful beyond its original user. The video asks whether people should think of themselves not as owners of their information, but as “custodians, transient carriers or caretakers.” It speculates that accumulated behavioral data might help later users or contribute to wider understanding of issues such as health, depression, and poverty. Those are possibilities proposed by the film, not demonstrated results.
Was the video a Google product announcement?
No. An X spokesperson told The Verge that the video was “a thought-experiment by the Design team from years ago” intended to use speculative design to explore uncomfortable ideas and provoke discussion. The spokesperson added: “It’s not related to any current or future products.” The distinction matters: the film documents an internal design exercise, not evidence that Google built, deployed, or announced the imagined ledger.

The Verge also reported that the video did not discuss privacy concerns or potential negative externalities. That describes what the film covers; it is not a comprehensive account of Google’s privacy practices.

The film’s two central shifts are from data as an individual record to data imagined as reusable across generations, and from a person choosing a goal to a system that might help shape the path toward it. Both shifts raise practical questions the video’s scenario leaves unresolved:
- Who sets the goal? A prompt can support a user’s intention, but the film does not explain safeguards against systems or other parties steering someone toward a goal they did not choose.
- Who can access or carry the ledger forward? The caretaker metaphor suggests information may outlast one user, but the video does not specify consent, access rules, correction, or deletion.
- What does the data actually justify? The film imagines broader insights into complex subjects such as depression and poverty, but offers no evidence that the proposed data or system could reliably produce them.
These are questions prompted by the concept, not proof that the system existed or that the video represented a deployed Google policy.
