Google Photos Face Groups estimates whether photos show the same face and groups images it thinks are similar. It does not verify a person’s real-world identity or independently know their name: you can add a name or nickname to a group, then search for that label. Treat group membership as a suggestion you may need to correct.
Does Google Photos recognize who someone is?
No—not in the sense of verifying a person’s identity against an official record. Google describes Face Groups as a way to detect faces, compare face images, and group images that its algorithms estimate are likely to show the same person. You supply a group’s name or nickname; the label is not a name the system has independently discovered. Google explains the process in its Face Groups help page.
| What it does | What it does not establish |
|---|---|
| Estimates whether face images in different photos are likely to show the same person. | A verified real-world identity, such as a match against a government ID or other external identity record. |
| Lets you add a name or nickname to a face group and search using that label. | That the system knew the person’s name before you labeled the group. |
How Face Groups creates a group
- Face detection: Google Photos detects whether a photo contains a face.
- Face models and similarity estimates: If Face Groups is on, algorithms create numerical models representing face images and estimate how similar they are, including whether different images may show the same face.
- Grouping: Photos with very similar faces that are likely to belong to the same person are placed in a group. You can add a name or nickname to help organize and find that group.
Not every image in a group necessarily shows a clearly visible face. Google says Photos may also use context such as pictures taken close together in time or clothing that appears the same when a face is not visible. Group membership is therefore a useful organizing clue, not proof that every included image contains the person’s face.
How reliable are the suggestions?
Google says, “Face group suggestions aren’t perfect.” Its documentation does not provide an accuracy rate, confidence threshold, or guarantee that every group contains only one person. Do not treat a group as an identity record or rely on it for identity verification, security decisions, or surveillance.

You can review suggested groups and tell Photos whether images show the same person, different people, or whether you are unsure. You can also merge groups, change labels, or add, remove, and change photo membership. Review a group before merging it: Google says a merge cannot be undone.
Privacy, sharing, and deletion
Google says face groups and labels are visible only to you by default, are not shared when you share photos, and remain private to your account. Google also says enabling Face Groups means you are asking it to make face models; such models may be considered biometric data in some jurisdictions. That is Google’s description, not a legal conclusion about how the feature is classified everywhere. See Google’s Face Groups retention policy.

- Turn Face Groups off: Google says this deletes your face groups, the face models used to create them, and their labels.
- Delete an individual photo or video: Google says it deletes face models derived specifically from that item.
- Leave Google Photos inactive: Google’s retention policy says Face Groups content is deleted if your account is inactive on Google Photos for more than two years.
Google Safety Center says it does not make general-purpose facial recognition technology commercially available. That statement is Google’s own description and should not be read as a claim about every possible use of Google Photos data.
Where to find the controls
On the web, open Google Photos settings and look for the “Group similar faces” section. Google’s help page documents controls for turning Face Groups on or off, separating pets from people, naming groups, merging groups, and correcting photo membership. Removing a photo from a group does not delete it from your Google Photos library.
Google Photos may not offer Face Groups in every geographic region, domain, or account type. If “People & pets” is missing, Google lists regional availability, Face Groups being off, and not having any groups yet as possible explanations. Mobile menus may differ by platform.

Face Groups can help you organize and find photos within your own library by grouping likely matches and letting you apply your own labels. It is a personal photo-organization feature, not a system that establishes who a person is. Google’s developer policy also says developers must not use Google Photos APIs to produce face clusters; the API policy describes clustering as intended to help users organize personal memories: Google Photos API User Data and Developer Policy.
