Its stated purpose is to help administrators control who can elevate privileges, which commands they can run, and how activity is administered and audited across a server estate. These are capabilities described by Fortra, not independently verified security outcomes.
What Fortra BoKS does
BoKS brings account and access administration for Linux and UNIX systems under centralized controls, rather than requiring administrators to manage each protected server independently. Fortra describes it as a platform for creating, modifying, and removing users and groups, assigning privileges, and applying access policies across a heterogeneous server environment. See Fortra’s Core Privileged Access Manager (BoKS) product page.
- Account administration: Centralized user and group provisioning, changes, and removal.
- Privilege and command controls: Policy governing elevated access and the commands users may execute, including centrally managed sudo and role-based command sets.
- Authentication: Central management of authentication and authorization policy for protected systems.
- Administration and audit: Fortra lists web administration, key management, session recording, activity and keystroke logs, and audit reports among the capabilities to evaluate on its BoKS demo page.
How BoKS fits into privileged access management
Privileged access management (PAM) is the broader security category concerned with controlling powerful accounts and actions. BoKS fits that category by governing privilege elevation: administrators can define who may gain elevated access and what that access permits. Fortra says this can allow users to elevate privileges without distributing a shared privileged password, while supporting auditing of privileged activity. The product’s listed controls are not proof that a particular deployment will prevent misuse; results depend on policy, implementation, and operational practice. Fortra outlines its privileged access management controls.
Centralized policy across servers
Instead of relying on separately maintained privilege settings on every host, the product is designed to let administrators manage policy centrally across supported Linux and UNIX systems. That is especially relevant where server estates include multiple platforms or many machines. The precise supported operating systems and releases need to be confirmed with Fortra.

Individual identities instead of shared privileged passwords
Fortra describes individual logins and privilege elevation that does not require distributing a shared privileged password. This approach can make it easier to associate privileged activity with a user identity, provided the organization configures and operates the controls appropriately.
Two different meanings of PAM
In product discussions, PAM usually means privileged access management. On Linux and UNIX, PAM also means Pluggable Authentication Modules, the operating-system framework used to integrate authentication methods. These are related in BoKS, but they are not interchangeable terms.

- DUAL-APPLICATION CARD: Combines FIDO2 hardware two-factor authentication and MIFARE DESFire EV2 (4K, AES) physical access on one Swiss-engineered NFC smart card
- CUSTOMIZABLE WHITE PVC: Blank printable face ready for in-house printing of employee photos, names, and company logos to double as a branded ID badge
- FIDO ALLIANCE CERTIFIED: Meets FIDO2 v2.1 and CTAP Level 1 for phishing-resistant MFA and passwordless sign-in where the service supports it
- CERTIFIED SECURE ELEMENT: Common Criteria EAL 6+ augmented protect your keys on a tamper-resistant chip
- TAP OR CONTACT USE: Works over NFC (ISO 14443) and contact (ISO 7816) interfaces backed by a 2 year warranty
Fortra says BoKS provides a centrally controlled Pluggable Authentication Module, including authentication-method cascading and central policy for online authentication and authorization. The goal is to avoid maintaining equivalent authentication configuration independently on every protected host. Details are on Fortra’s Pluggable Authentication page.
How BoKS connects with Active Directory
Active Directory integration is distinct from the operating-system PAM integration. Fortra describes BoKS Active Directory bridging for provisioning and de-provisioning, Kerberos capabilities, and use of Microsoft’s Identity Management for UNIX component without changing the AD schema. Organizations should confirm how these features map to their specific directory setup and identity lifecycle requirements. Fortra’s overview is its Active Directory Bridging page.

What to compare when evaluating BoKS
Category labels alone do not establish whether BoKS is a fit. Compare the controls and operational requirements against your own environment:
- System coverage: Check support for the exact Linux and UNIX distributions and releases in use, along with any other platforms you require. Fortra’s material establishes a Linux/UNIX focus but not a complete current support matrix.
- Privilege model: Determine whether policies can constrain users, roles, context, and permitted commands, and how elevation works without shared privileged passwords.
- Directory integration: Map how accounts, group membership, authentication, and offboarding connect to your identity provider and Active Directory environment.
- Administration and audit: Establish which events and sessions are recorded, how long records are retained, and whether reports satisfy your audit requirements. Fortra’s Centralized Security and Administration page describes administration and audit features to assess.
- Deployment and commercial terms: Request current details on architecture, prerequisites, implementation effort, feature and license scope, support, and cost. The cited product pages do not settle these terms.
What is established—and what still needs confirmation
Fortra presents BoKS as a centralized Linux and UNIX access-management product with account administration, privilege controls, directory and authentication integrations, and audit-related features. Its materials are vendor descriptions; they do not independently establish security efficacy or implementation outcomes. The pages cited here also do not provide enough detail to establish exact supported releases, deployment architecture, licensing, pricing, or service terms. Confirm those specifics with current Fortra documentation and a scoped vendor discussion before making a purchasing or compatibility decision. For broader company context, see Fortra’s Fox Technologies product-line page.
