Video games draw on several distinct Philippine traditions, not one shared, fixed pantheon. The documented examples range from a tikbalang encounter in the role-playing game Anito: Defend a Land Enraged to the unfinished VR adventure Tales of the Aswang VR and Balik-Tao, a browser-demo card game built around a manananggal’s separated-body motif. They show different ways creators adapt folklore; they do not establish one definitive version of any being or prove that every community tells the same stories.
Which Filipino mythology games can you play now?
Of the three documented video-game examples, Balik-Tao is the one with a browser demo available. Tales of the Aswang VR is listed as coming soon, not available to play; Anito: Defend a Land Enraged is documented as an example, but the cited passage does not establish its current release status or provide enough detail to describe its gameplay beyond a tikbalang encounter.
| Game | Format | Folklore element documented | Availability established here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anito: Defend a Land Enraged | Role-playing game | A tikbalang encounter, identified in an academic passage about Filipino video games | Current availability is not established by the cited passage |
| Tales of the Aswang VR | VR adventure | Kapre, manananggal, pugot mamu and duendes are named in the developer’s description | Steam listing says coming soon; it is not listed as available |
| Balik-Tao | HTML5 browser card game | Parents’ winged and earthbound halves have separated, drawing on the manananggal’s divided-body motif | A browser demo is offered; the full game remains in development |
These are not interchangeable options. One is a conventional RPG example, one is a planned VR adventure, and one can be sampled as a browser demo. A demo is not the same as a finished release, and a store listing is not proof that a game is currently playable. The distinction matters especially for Tales of the Aswang VR: its developer describes VR-specific controls and PC requirements, but the listing says it is unavailable. Those requirements should not be treated as a reason to buy VR equipment for a game that cannot yet be played.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The evidence for Anito is narrower still: an indexed academic passage identifies a tikbalang encounter. It does not support more detailed claims here about the encounter’s level, combat, or current platforms. These limits do not erase the example; they help keep a mention of the game from turning into an invented walkthrough or an inaccurate availability claim.

What is an aswang, and is a manananggal one?
Aswang is best understood as a broad, variable category in folklore discussions, not as the name of one monster with a universal design. A manananggal or related figure that separates its body may be discussed within the wider aswang tradition, but that does not make every aswang a manananggal—or give every aswang the same anatomy, behavior, or weakness.
Descriptions differ by community, language, collector, and period. A folklore compendium, for example, distinguishes Bicolano forms of asuwang rather than presenting the word as a single creature profile. The spelling and terminology in a source matter: an account labeled Bicolano should not quietly become a statement about what all Filipinos believe. Oral accounts also vary, so a concise game description may be one interpretation rather than a complete inventory of tradition.
This distinction helps make sense of the two game adaptations. The developer description for Tales of the Aswang VR names a manananggal among the protagonist Juno’s encounters, alongside other beings. Balik-Tao instead turns a separated-body motif into a card-game premise: players reconstruct parents whose winged and earthbound halves have parted. Its creator presents the game as a hopeful hidden-role experience, not simply as a monster hunt. These choices use related folklore material for different purposes—an encounter in one case, a central game mechanic in the other.
Neither example should be read as a complete definition of aswang. Nor does the presence of one named being in a game prove that its design matches every regional or historical account. When a game selects one recognizable feature, that selection is an act of adaptation. It can be a useful introduction, but players who want folklore context should look for the specific community and source behind the description.

What is a tikbalang, and was it always horse-headed?
The familiar tikbalang image is a tall, horse-headed being associated with confusing travelers or making them lose their way. Historical records do not show that this visual description was fixed from the first written mention of the name, however; the surviving chronology offers a more complicated picture.
An analysis of early records reports the name in a 1589 account without horse anatomy. A translated version of that account, attributed to the Franciscan missionary Juan de Plasencia, describes “phantoms” called “Tigbalaang.” Those English labels are the wording reproduced through a later translation, not an exhaustive definition of the Tagalog term. A 1613 description includes other traits, while clearer equine details appear later in the cited record.
This sequence is a reason for care, not a precise date for the invention of the horse-headed tikbalang. Written records are not the same thing as the full history of oral tradition, so the chronology cannot prove when the horse-like appearance first emerged in stories. Nor does it establish a proposed foreign origin. The safe conclusion is that the figure’s familiar appearance has a history and that the earliest cited written reference does not describe it as horse-headed.

That is enough to place the game among documented video-game adaptations, but not enough to infer the encounter’s details. It is also worth separating the game’s use of the figure from the folklore record: a game encounter is a designer’s representation, while historical and community-specific accounts have their own context.

What do diwata and anito mean in these adaptations?
Diwata and anito do not translate neatly into universal fantasy categories. Depending on the source and community, diwata can refer to a deity or another powerful being; anito can refer to an ancestral or spiritual presence and to related ritual contexts. Calling either one simply a “fairy” or an “idol” risks flattening meanings that vary across traditions.
The distinction is useful when reading game descriptions, character lists, or summaries of Philippine folklore. A familiar English fantasy label may sound convenient, but it can conceal the source’s own categories and relationships. Unless a particular adaptation explains what it means by a term, readers should not assume that a game character represents every use of that word or the beliefs of every Filipino community.
A documentary-series producer lists tikbalang, kapre, diwata, tiyanak, bakunawa, and manananggal as folklore subjects. That list is evidence of topics covered by the series, not evidence that all six appear in Tales of the Aswang VR or any other one game. Likewise, a folklore compendium describes regional bakunawa eclipse stories, but the cited folklore sources do not establish a particular video-game appearance for the bakunawa. It is more accurate to say so than to place the creature in a game without evidence.
How do the games change the folklore they use?
Each documented example selects folklore for a different role in play: an encounter, a VR adventure’s roster of beings, or a card-game mechanic. Comparing the format, named figures, adaptation choices, evidence source, and availability gives a clearer picture than simply counting creatures in a list.

| Example | How folklore is used | What the evidence says—and does not say |
|---|---|---|
| Anito: Defend a Land Enraged | A tikbalang encounter within an RPG | An academic indexed passage identifies the encounter. It does not substantiate further claims here about its mechanics or level design. |
| Tales of the Aswang VR | A VR adventure whose developer description names several encounters | The description names a kapre at the beginning of Juno’s journey and also lists manananggal, pugot mamu, and duendes. The game is listed as coming soon, not available. |
| Balik-Tao | A divided-body motif becomes a hidden-role card-game premise | The creator offers an HTML5 browser demo in which a solo player faces computer players. That does not establish live multiplayer; the full game remains in development. |
The creator of Balik-Tao frames its premise as hopeful, showing how a traditional motif can be used to build a game around recovery or reconstruction rather than only fear. That is a creative interpretation, not a claim about a single original story. Similarly, the beings named by the Tales of the Aswang VR developer are details of that game’s description; they should not be expanded into a claim that every creature belongs to one uniform aswang category.
No independently published, topic-wide statistic establishes how many Filipino-mythology video games exist or how popular they are. A list of a few documented examples is therefore not a count of the whole field. It is also not a reliable way to rank games by cultural accuracy: there is no single canonical pantheon against which every creative choice can be scored, and the evidence here does not include a comparative assessment by communities represented in the folklore.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can a player reasonably conclude about cultural accuracy?
A game can be specific about which source or motif it adapts without claiming to represent all versions. That is a more meaningful standard than asking whether it is the one “authentic” version, especially when the underlying tradition differs across communities and records.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When evaluating a game description, ask four practical questions: Which being or motif is named? Does the description identify a regional or community context? Is the feature presented as a documented tradition or as the game’s own invention? And is the game actually released, or is the evidence only a preview or demo? Those questions keep folklore context, creative design, and product availability from being conflated.

Source transparency also sets a sensible boundary on what a reader can conclude. The VR title’s Steam description supports what its developer says the game includes, not an independent assessment of its cultural treatment. The Balik-Tao creator page explains the game’s premise and demo, not how all communities understand the manananggal. The academic indexed passage supports the limited claim about Anito and a tikbalang encounter. None of these sources alone can stand in for every oral or ethnographic account.
Is there a Filipino mythology tabletop RPG?
Yes. Tadhana is a tabletop role-playing game, not a video game, so it belongs in a separate category. Its team has described playable aswang, diwata, and tikbalang, and has also discussed inventing or separating categories for its own game world.
That distinction makes Tadhana a useful example of adaptation rather than evidence for how folklore must work. Its lead writer and developer, John Nathan Briones, put the variation plainly: “The monsters in our myth have different versions.” Game rules need to choose how a creature works in a particular fictional setting; that choice can be clearly attributed to the game without presenting its mechanics as timeless or universal folklore.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Filipino mythology have one official canon that games should follow?
No single canonical pantheon is established by these examples. Names and roles vary across communities, languages, sources, and periods, so a careful description identifies the tradition or adaptation it is discussing instead of treating one game as the definitive account.
Can I play Balik-Tao with friends online?
The documented browser demo is described as a solo player facing computer players. That does not establish live online multiplayer, so check the creator’s current game page for any later change before expecting a friend-versus-friend mode.
Can I play Tales of the Aswang VR without a VR headset?
The developer listing describes VR-specific controls, and the game is marked as coming soon rather than available. The available information does not establish a non-VR mode; check the current store listing for platform and control details if availability changes.
Is Tadhana a video game I can download?
No. It is a tabletop role-playing game, so its references to playable aswang, diwata, and tikbalang belong to a different medium and should not be added to a list of video games.
