Short answer: Etsy allows AI-assisted creative products when the seller supplies original, item-specific prompts and meaningful human curation and creative input. The seller must disclose AI use in the listing description and accurately show what the buyer will receive. Etsy does not allow automated, bot-generated work without individualized oversight, AI-generated functional instructions such as patterns or recipes, or prompt bundles sold as standalone products. These rules are in Etsy’s Creativity Standards (updated June 10, 2025) and its AI-specific Seller Handbook guidance dated October 22, 2026.
What does Etsy allow when a product is made with AI?
Etsy treats a seller-prompted AI creation as potentially eligible under its Designed by a seller category. Eligibility depends on the seller’s role in creating the specific item, not merely on which software generated the pixels or text. You need to develop the creative direction, use individualized prompts, select and refine the result, and disclose the AI assistance to shoppers.
Etsy’s examples include a fantasy scene generated from a seller’s original prompt and a custom AI portrait of a buyer’s pet. In both cases, the output is tied to a particular creative request and the seller’s decisions. A system that produces hundreds of near-identical files with little or no item-level review does not meet that standard.
Which Etsy seller category fits an AI-assisted product?
Etsy’s Creativity Standards describe four seller roles. AI-assisted original designs generally belong in Designed by a seller, while the other categories concern making, selecting, or sourcing products in different ways.

Do not label an AI-generated design as handmade or claim it is entirely your own creation if those descriptions would mislead buyers. If a production partner prints, manufactures, or otherwise makes the item, identify that partner as Etsy requires and explain your design role truthfully.
How much human involvement does Etsy require?
Etsy’s AI guidance sets an item-specific standard: “Every item listed on Etsy must involve direct, individual human prompting, curation, and creative input into that specific item.” Human involvement must be part of the creation and selection of each listed work, rather than a one-time setup for an automated pipeline.
Write an original, item-specific creative brief
Start with your own concept, subject, composition, customer requirements, or visual constraints. For a custom pet portrait, for example, the buyer’s photographs and requested style can inform a prompt written for that commission. A generic prompt copied into a bulk job gives you less evidence of individualized creative work.

Review the generated result for composition, errors, unwanted artifacts, likeness, and compliance with the buyer’s request. Make creative decisions about which version to keep and what to revise. If you use editing software, the edits should contribute to the finished item rather than merely approving an unattended batch.
Keep the human role connected to the listed file
Your records should let you explain how the particular file or physical item was developed if a customer or Etsy asks. A shop-wide statement that “AI made these” does not substitute for item-level creative direction. Automated generation without individualized human oversight is prohibited.
How must I disclose AI use in an Etsy listing?
Etsy requires sellers to disclose in the listing description when an item was created with AI. Place a clear statement in the description itself, where a buyer evaluating the product can see it; do not rely only on a shop announcement, image text, or a hidden keyword.
A practical disclosure identifies both the tool’s role and your contribution. For example: “Created with AI from an original prompt developed for this design, then selected, edited, and prepared by the seller.” Adjust the wording to match what actually happened. Do not imply that the work was drawn, photographed, or written entirely by hand if AI generated part of it.

Disclosure does not cure another policy violation. The listing still needs an accurate title, description, variation information, production-partner details, and any other information Etsy requires for the item.
Which AI-assisted products are prohibited?
Three boundaries are especially important: unattended automated content, AI-generated functional instructions, and standalone prompt bundles.
Bot-generated or bulk content without individualized oversight
Etsy prohibits content generated by bots without individualized human involvement in the specific item. A workflow that automatically creates, names, uploads, and publishes large numbers of files without meaningful review is risky even if a person configured the software initially. Human approval must be connected to each product’s creative result.
AI-generated instructions whose purpose is to guide a task
AI may not generate functional instructions whose main purpose is helping a buyer make, prepare, build, repair, use, or complete something. Etsy’s examples include craft patterns, recipes, project plans, assembly or instruction manuals, and task-oriented instructional guides or ebooks.

The restriction concerns the instructions themselves. If you sell a decorative image, an illustration, or another creative output made with individualized AI assistance, that can be evaluated as a designed work. If the product tells the buyer how to achieve a task, the instructions must be your own work rather than AI-generated text.
Prompt bundles sold as products
Etsy prohibits AI prompt bundles sold separately from finished artwork. Prompts can be part of your internal creative process, but packaging a collection of prompts as the product does not qualify merely because the prompts are original or accompanied by a digital download. A finished creative item must be the thing being sold, and it must satisfy the other standards.
What are the rules for listing images when AI is involved?
Listing images must accurately represent the item a buyer will receive. Etsy’s October 22, 2026 AI guidance says AI tools may not alter a photo to make an item look better, appear higher quality, or become materially different from the actual product.

If you use AI in listing images, include at least one unedited photograph of the item against a real background. That photograph gives shoppers a view of the actual physical product rather than an entirely synthetic presentation. Keep the unedited image truthful: do not substitute a stock object, alter its dimensions, or show features the buyer will not receive.

For visual digital downloads, Etsy Help says to include a preview of the actual content. A decorative mockup can show how a file might look in use, but it should not replace a clear preview of the files delivered after purchase.
How do I publish an AI-assisted Etsy listing compliantly?
Use this sequence for each new item instead of treating compliance as a shop-wide setting.
- Define the item. Decide whether the buyer receives a digital creative file, a physical item, or both. Separate the creative output from any instructions that would tell the buyer how to perform a task.
- Create an original brief and prompt. Record the subject, style, dimensions, personalization, and other decisions that make this item distinct. Use buyer-provided information only with the necessary permissions.
- Generate and refine. Produce candidate outputs, inspect them individually, and make the edits or compositional decisions needed for the final result. Reject files with errors, accidental trademarks, unsafe content, or features that do not match the listing.
- Check rights and privacy. Confirm that the work does not copy protected characters, logos, artists’ signature styles, or private personal information without authorization. Etsy’s AI guidance keeps intellectual-property, privacy, publicity, and content rules in force.
- Classify the seller role. Use the Designed by a seller description when the product is your original design, including a digital download or an item made by a disclosed production partner. Do not call the output handmade if that would misstate how it was produced.
- Prepare truthful images. Show the actual digital content in a preview. For a physical item whose listing images use AI, add at least one unedited photograph against a real background and remove any image that makes the product look materially different.
- Write the disclosure. State in the listing description that AI was used, then describe your human prompting, curation, editing, or personalization accurately. Keep the statement specific to the item.
- Audit the finished listing. Check the title, description, variations, delivery format, production-partner information, images, and any included text. Remove AI-generated functional instructions and any separately sold prompt bundle before publishing.
How should I handle borderline products?
When a listing is difficult to classify, evaluate the seller’s creative role, the purpose of the item, and the accuracy of the presentation together. The following examples show where the boundary usually falls.

What other Etsy policies still apply to AI-assisted work?
AI assistance does not transfer responsibility to the software provider. Etsy says these products remain subject to its intellectual-property, privacy, publicity, and content policies, as well as the general requirement that descriptions and images be truthful.

What happens if an AI listing violates Etsy’s rules?
Etsy may remove a listing that violates its standards. The Seller Handbook warns that severe or repeated violations can lead to permanent shop closure, so correcting a listing after a removal does not guarantee that future violations will be treated as minor.

If Etsy questions a product, be prepared to explain the item-specific prompt or brief, the human curation and editing you performed, the source of any customer materials, the production-partner relationship, and how the listing images represent the delivered item. Do not respond by relabeling an AI-generated instruction as a “template” or by hiding the AI disclosure; the item’s actual purpose and creation process control.
Which dates and guidance should sellers follow?
Etsy’s primary Creativity Standards — Our House Rules page shows a last-updated date of June 10, 2025. It establishes the four seller categories and places seller-prompted AI creations in Designed by a seller.
Etsy’s AI-specific Seller Handbook guidance is dated October 22, 2026 and provides the more detailed operational expectations: individualized human input, the ban on bot-generated work without that input, the ban on AI-generated functional instructions and prompt bundles, AI disclosure, and the unedited real-background photo requirement for AI-assisted listing imagery. When the general standards and the newer AI guidance address the same issue, use the more specific AI guidance for your listing workflow and recheck Etsy’s current pages before making material changes to your shop.
Pre-publish checklist for an AI-assisted product
- The item is a finished creative product, not a separately sold prompt bundle.
- You supplied original, item-specific creative direction and reviewed the final output.
- Any instructions that help a buyer make, prepare, build, repair, use, or complete a task were written by you rather than generated by AI.
- The listing description clearly discloses AI use.
- The seller category and production-partner information accurately describe how the item is made.
- Digital previews show the actual files delivered.
- AI-assisted physical-product listings include an unedited photograph against a real background.
- No image, title, or description exaggerates the item or hides material differences.
- Intellectual-property, privacy, publicity, and content concerns have been checked.
