Blue Owl Capital is a publicly traded alternative asset manager. It raises and manages money for institutional and private-wealth clients, then invests that capital through three platforms: Credit, Real Assets, and GP Strategic Capital. Its main revenue engine is fees for managing investments—not the total amount of assets it oversees.

What Blue Owl Capital does

Blue Owl Capital Inc. (NYSE: OWL) manages investment strategies on behalf of clients; it is not simply a private-credit fund. The company describes its organization as a “one-firm” model and reports one operating and reportable segment, despite having three distinct investment platforms. Its 2025 Form 10-K describes the business and its strategies, while the investor overview identifies its client groups and platforms.

What the three platforms invest in

Platform What it does How to understand the activity
Credit Provides direct loans and invests across alternative, investment-grade, and liquid credit strategies, as well as asset-backed and specialty finance, broadly syndicated loans, and collateralized loan obligations (CLOs). Direct lending provides customized financing primarily to upper-middle-market companies. Other strategies may involve loans, credit instruments, or financing backed by assets.
Real Assets Invests in net lease real estate, real estate credit, and digital infrastructure. Net lease investments focus largely on single-tenant properties; real estate credit finances borrowers against real assets; digital infrastructure investments include data centers and related infrastructure.
GP Strategic Capital Acquires minority equity stakes in private-capital managers and provides those managers with debt financing. Blue Owl also says its Business Services Platform provides strategic support to partner managers. At the underlying manager level, revenue sources can include a contractually fixed share of management fees, carried interest, and returns on balance-sheet investments.

In short, Blue Owl supplies or invests capital in corporate credit, real estate and infrastructure, and private-capital management firms. The specific structure and economics vary by strategy and product.

How Blue Owl earns revenue

Management and advisory fees

Blue Owl says revenue primarily comes from investment advisory and management agreements. It recognizes management fees over the period in which it performs investment-management services and generally collects them quarterly. Fee terms vary by product, so there is no single universal rate or fee base that applies across the firm.

#1 Best Overall

The 2025 Form 10-K describes several bases used to calculate fees: regulated credit products typically charge on average gross asset value or net asset value (NAV); CLO fees are based on the par value of collateral; other credit products may use gross or net asset value, investment cost, or, in some cases, uncalled capital. Real-assets fees may be charged on committed or called capital during an investment period and later often on unrealized investment cost or NAV. GP minority-stakes fees may be based on committed capital and later on unrealized investment cost.

Other and performance-related revenue

Blue Owl also reports administrative, transaction, and other fees. Some of this income comes from services to portfolio companies, such as arranging, syndicating, originating, and structuring transactions. Certain regulated and similarly structured products may generate Part I fees based on net investment income, subject to performance hurdles. The company also reports performance revenues.

How large is the business?

Blue Owl’s investor-relations overview reported $319 billion in assets under management (AUM), $190 billion in fee-paying AUM, and $255 billion in permanent capital as of June 30, 2026. These are point-in-time figures from that date, not revenue figures.

For a separate, audited year-end snapshot, Blue Owl’s 2025 Form 10-K reported $307.4 billion in AUM and $187.7 billion in fee-paying AUM as of December 31, 2025. The different totals reflect different reporting dates; they should not be presented as if they were measured at the same time.

The same filing reported $28.4 billion in AUM that was not yet paying fees as of December 31, 2025. Management estimated that this capital could generate approximately $326 million in annualized management fees once deployed. That is a potential upon deployment, not revenue already earned.

AUM, earnings measures, and net income are not interchangeable

  • AUM is the value of assets Blue Owl manages on behalf of investors. It is not the company’s revenue.
  • Fee-paying AUM is the portion of managed assets on which Blue Owl was earning management fees under the relevant arrangements.
  • Fee-related earnings (FRE) and distributable earnings (DE) are company-defined non-GAAP measures. For the year ended December 31, 2025, Blue Owl reported $2.65 billion of FRE and $1.31 billion of DE.
  • Net income attributable to Blue Owl Capital Inc. is a GAAP measure. For the year ended December 31, 2025, it was $78.8 million.

FRE and DE offer views of earnings under Blue Owl’s own non-GAAP definitions; they are not substitutes for GAAP net income. The figures above also describe different measures, not different names for the same pool of money.

What the business model does—and does not—tell investors

Managing capital across private-market strategies exposes investors and the manager to risks that include market movements, borrower credit quality, asset valuations, liquidity constraints, and the pace at which committed capital is deployed. A large AUM total does not guarantee investment performance or a particular level of recurring earnings. Blue Owl’s 2025 Form 10-K cautions that historical product returns do not predict future returns.

The company’s fourth-quarter 2025 results release attributed this statement to Co-CEOs Doug Ostrover and Marc Lipschultz: “Blue Owl’s results for the full year of 2025 highlight record fundraising in our institutional and private wealth channels, reflecting robust investor interest in our strategies and Blue Owl’s continued global expansion.” Fundraising is one indicator of demand for its offerings; it does not by itself establish future returns or revenue.
