An AI-generated recipe or pattern is a set of functional directions produced by an AI system: instructions meant to help someone cook, sew, knit, build, repair, or complete another task. Etsy’s policy, as described in its October 22, 2026 Seller Handbook update, prohibits AI-generated functional instructions, even if a seller prompted the system or later edited its output. Etsy treats seller-prompted AI art differently: some such work is allowed when the seller contributes creatively and discloses AI use. The distinction matters because buyers may not discover an instruction’s flaws until they have spent time and materials following it.
What does “AI-generated recipe or pattern” mean?
For marketplace purposes, the important question is what the content does, not whether it is sold as a PDF, printed booklet, download, or part of a larger product. A recipe or pattern is functional when a buyer is expected to rely on its directions to reach a result. If AI produced those directions, Etsy classifies them as AI-generated functional instructions.
Etsy’s examples include recipes; knitting, crochet, sewing, embroidery, quilting, and beading patterns; building or woodworking plans; instruction and assembly manuals; and instructional guides or e-books. The same functional test can help sellers assess less obvious cases: does the buyer follow the content to make, prepare, build, repair, use, or complete something specific?
- A recipe that tells a buyer what to do and in what order is functional instruction.
- A crochet pattern that specifies how to create a particular item is functional instruction.
- An AI-generated illustration of a finished object is an image, not itself a pattern. The directions accompanying it are a separate matter.
- A seller’s disclosure or the file format does not change whether the directions themselves were generated by AI.
This distinction is about the role of the content, not a general ban on every product that involves AI. Etsy permits certain seller-prompted AI creations, such as fantasy art or a custom pet portrait, when the seller supplies original prompts or inputs, makes creative decisions, and discloses AI use in the listing description. That permission does not extend to AI-written instructions for making or doing something.

Can I sell an AI-generated recipe or craft pattern on Etsy?
No. Etsy’s Seller Handbook says, “AI-generated functional instructions are not allowed on Etsy.” That includes AI-generated recipes and craft patterns, as well as the other instructional formats Etsy identifies.
Prompting an AI system yourself does not make its functional directions eligible under this rule. Nor does editing, proofreading, or disclosing AI use turn AI-generated directions into an allowed Etsy listing. Disclosure is required for certain permitted AI creations; it is not an exception to the restriction on AI-generated functional instructions.
For a mixed product, separate its parts before deciding what to list. A seller-created artwork component may be eligible under Etsy’s rules for seller-prompted AI creations, provided the seller makes the required creative contribution and discloses AI use. But if the product also contains a recipe, pattern, plan, or guide whose instructions were AI-generated, the art allowance does not make those directions permissible.
What is the difference between AI-generated and AI-assisted work?
The distinction turns on what the AI actually produced. AI-generated content is created by the tool; AI-assisted work is authored by a person who uses AI for support such as brainstorming, editing, refinement, or error-checking. Marketplaces can define and apply these categories differently, so a label such as “AI-assisted” is not a universal safe harbor.
For Etsy, the decisive rule in this context is that AI-generated functional instructions are prohibited. A seller should not assume that a human prompt, a round of editing, or a statement that the work is AI-assisted overrides that rule. The material question is whether AI generated the functional directions buyers will rely on.

Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) uses a separate disclosure framework. It requires publishers to tell KDP when text, images, or translations were created by an AI-based tool, even if the publisher later edits them substantially. If the creator wrote the material and used AI only to brainstorm, edit, refine, or error-check it, KDP classifies that as AI-assisted and does not require disclosure under this rule. KDP still holds the publisher responsible for content quality and intellectual-property compliance.
| Question | Etsy policy described in its October 22, 2026 update | Amazon KDP policy in the supplied guidelines |
|---|---|---|
| What content is addressed? | Functional instructions, including recipes, patterns, plans, manuals, and guides; Etsy also discusses some seller-prompted AI creations such as art. | AI-generated text, images, and translations, as distinct from AI-assisted work. |
| What happens when AI generated the material? | AI-generated functional instructions are not allowed. Some seller-prompted AI creations are permitted under the applicable creative-contribution and disclosure conditions. | The publisher must disclose AI-generated text, images, or translations to KDP, even after substantial editing. |
| What if a person wrote the content and used AI only as support? | The supplied Etsy policy does not establish a general AI-assisted exception for functional instructions; assess whether AI generated the directions. | Brainstorming, editing, refining, and error-checking are treated as AI-assisted uses that do not require disclosure under this rule. |
| Who remains responsible for quality? | The seller must comply with Etsy’s listing and product rules. | The publisher remains responsible for content quality and intellectual-property compliance. |
The comparison is not a ranking of which platform is more permissive overall. It shows why sellers and publishers need to check the rules for the specific marketplace and content type: Etsy’s restriction is about the function and origin of instructions, while KDP’s described rule requires disclosure for certain AI-generated publication content.
Why does Etsy restrict AI-generated instructions?
Etsy gives a buyer-risk reason: instructions “may be more likely to contain errors or lead to poor results, and buyers often won’t discover the problem until they’ve already spent time and materials following them.” A misleading illustration may be apparent before purchase; a flawed recipe or pattern can fail only after someone has bought ingredients, fabric, yarn, or other supplies and invested effort.
That delayed discovery makes instruction quality difficult for a buyer to judge from a listing alone. A plausible-looking pattern might omit a step or produce an unexpected result; a recipe might not work as described. These are examples of the risk Etsy identifies, not a claim that every AI-generated instruction is wrong. The policy draws a categorical line because the buyer may bear the cost of finding out.
Etsy also frames the rule around marketplace trust and human participation. In the October 22, 2026 Seller Handbook update, it says AI should support creativity and craftsmanship rather than replace them. It bars bot-generated listings without direct, individual human prompting, curation, and creative input. The update’s general emphasis on human contribution should not be read as permission to sell AI-generated functional directions: Etsy separately states that those instructions are not allowed.

What photos and disclosures does Etsy require?
For recipes, patterns, seeds, and similar items, Etsy’s listing-image requirements call for at least one real, unedited photo of something made using the product. AI-generated images cannot be the only images used to show the finished result. This is a separate listing-evidence requirement: a compliant photo does not make prohibited AI-generated instructions eligible.

For a permitted seller-prompted AI creation, Etsy requires the seller to disclose AI use in the listing description. Etsy also prohibits misleading AI imagery and requires listing photos to represent accurately what the buyer will receive. The disclosure and the image requirement address different questions: the first identifies AI’s role in an eligible creation; the second helps buyers understand what the product actually produces or includes.
A practical listing check
- Identify the deliverable. Decide whether buyers are receiving artwork, functional directions, or both. Evaluate each component under the relevant rule.
- Trace authorship of the directions. If AI generated the recipe, pattern, plan, or guide, do not list those instructions on Etsy. Prompting the tool or editing its output does not remove the stated prohibition.
- Prepare accurate product evidence. For a permitted recipe, pattern, or similar item, make a real sample using the product and include at least one real, unedited photo. Do not rely exclusively on generated imagery to depict the result.
- Disclose permitted AI use. If the listing is an eligible seller-prompted AI creation, state AI’s role in the description and ensure the seller’s own creative contribution is real and accurately represented.
- Keep the claims consistent. The title, description, and images should not suggest that a sample was made from instructions or materials that the listing does not actually provide.
Keeping the human-authored draft, any AI assistance, testing and corrections, and the final sample together is a sensible way to document how a product was made. Etsy’s stated listing-image rule requires a real, unedited image; the supplied policy summary does not say that sellers must submit a separate testing log or authorship record with every listing.
Does copyright make an AI-generated recipe or pattern legal to sell?
No. Marketplace eligibility and copyright are separate questions. A listing may violate a platform’s rules even if some of its words, images, or creative arrangement could qualify for copyright protection. Conversely, calling a work copyrighted does not make AI-generated functional instructions acceptable under Etsy’s policy.
The U.S. Copyright Office’s Copyright and Artificial Intelligence, Part 2: Copyrightability, published January 29, 2025, says that using AI to assist rather than stand in for human creativity does not by itself affect the availability of copyright protection. The Office concludes that copyright does not extend to purely AI-generated material or material made without sufficient human control. It also says prompts alone generally do not give a person sufficient control over the expressive elements of the output.

- Lots of great projects packed into one little book
Human-authored text, creative selection or arrangement, and creative modifications may remain protectable. The relevant question is what expressive choices a person actually contributed, not simply whether the person entered a prompt. Copyright protection, where available, concerns the human-authored expression; it is not a platform-policy exemption.
Recipes have a specific copyright distinction
The Copyright Office’s “What Does Copyright Protect?” FAQ says that a mere listing of ingredients is not protected by copyright. A recipe or formula accompanied by substantial literary expression, directions, or a collection of recipes may have a basis for copyright protection. That distinction helps explain why a bare list of ingredients and a creatively written cookbook are not necessarily treated alike under copyright law, but it does not alter Etsy’s rule about AI-generated functional directions.
The Copyright Office reported receiving more than 10,000 comments in its 2023 AI notice-of-inquiry record. That figure describes public participation in the Office’s study process; it is not a measure of how many AI works are copyrightable or a change to marketplace policy.

Etsy may remove listings that violate its rules. Its October 22, 2026 update also warns that severe or repeated violations can result in permanent shop closure. A seller should therefore treat the distinction between an allowed AI creation and a prohibited AI-generated guide as a listing decision, not merely a disclosure detail.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I sell a recipe PDF on Etsy if I disclose that AI wrote it?
No. A disclosure does not change the rule for AI-generated functional instructions. Etsy’s disclosure requirement applies to certain permitted AI creations, not as an exception for AI-written recipes.
Does Etsy require me to upload a photo of every finished item?
The stated image requirement is at least one real, unedited photo of something made using the product for recipes, patterns, seeds, and similar items. The supplied policy summary does not specify that every possible variation or finished item must be photographed.
Can I copyright a knitting pattern that I created with AI prompts?
Prompts alone generally do not provide sufficient human control over an AI system’s expressive output, according to the U.S. Copyright Office’s January 29, 2025 report. Human-written expression or creative modifications may be protectable, but the precise result depends on the human contribution.
If KDP lets me disclose AI-generated content, does that mean Etsy will accept it?
No. Amazon KDP and Etsy set separate marketplace rules. A KDP disclosure obligation does not grant permission to list the same AI-generated instructions on Etsy.
