A game is best called AI-generated when generative AI materially creates content players consume, either before release or while they play. A game with fixed AI-created art or dialogue has pre-generated AI content; one that creates dialogue, quests, characters, images, levels or other state during play has live-generated AI content. The strongest label is AI-native game: runtime generation is the core mechanic, so removing the model would collapse or fundamentally change the central play experience. Using an AI tool privately for brainstorming, code suggestions or internal prototypes does not by itself make the finished game AI-generated.
What does “AI-generated game” actually mean?
There is no single industry-wide badge that covers every use of artificial intelligence in game development. The useful question is not simply whether a developer used machine learning, but what the system created, when it created it, what players experienced and how dependent the game was on it.
Generative AI produces new text, images, voices, music, animation, 3D references, code or other material from a model. Conventional enemy behavior, pathfinding, animation blending, matchmaking and recommendation systems may use AI or machine learning, but they are not automatically generative and do not make a game AI-generated.
For player-facing descriptions, classify a game on two related levels:

- Economical &Reusable: Built durable materials with a long-lasting battery, our CAGIWIRU air duster it's a sustainable alternative to disposable air cans.
- AI-assisted production: AI helps the team make the game, but the player experience would remain substantially the same without it.
- Pre-generated AI content: AI-created material is made during development, then ships as fixed content players consume.
- Live-generated AI content: the running game calls a generative system to create content or change state during play.
- AI-native game: live generation is constitutive of the core loop; replacing it with a fixed table of authored content would produce a fundamentally different game.
These labels can overlap. A game can ship with AI-generated character portraits and also generate NPC dialogue at runtime. Describe each use, then explain which one matters most to play.
What is the difference between AI-assisted, pre-generated, live-generated and AI-native games?
The categories differ by where AI acts and how much the player depends on its output. This table uses the practical distinctions applied by platform policies and recent game-AI scholarship.
| Category | Where AI acts | What the player receives | How central AI is |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI-assisted production | Behind the scenes | Human-selected or edited results, or no AI output at all | Low; removing the tool leaves the game essentially the same |
| Pre-generated AI content | During development | Fixed AI-assisted art, music, dialogue, localization, concepts or other assets that ship | Medium; players consume the result, but do not need a model running |
| Live-generated AI content | While the game is running | Runtime dialogue, quests, characters, images, levels, worlds or mechanics | High when generation changes game state or player choices |
| AI-native game | Runtime core loop | Continuous model-driven interaction or open-ended generation through which play happens | Defining; removing or trivially replacing the model collapses or fundamentally changes play |
“AI-generated” is therefore a broad descriptive phrase, while “AI-native” is a much narrower claim about dependence on runtime generation. Calling every game that used an image generator AI-native erases that important difference.
What counts as AI-assisted production?
Examples include asking a model for mechanic ideas, using code completion to draft a script, generating an internal prototype, suggesting balance changes, preparing localization drafts or automating a repetitive editor task. If the team discards the output, rewrites it, or uses it only to speed up work, the finished game is normally still an ordinary game with AI-assisted development.
Production assistance can become player-relevant when its output ships. A prompt-generated texture used in the final build is no longer only a private aid; it is pre-generated AI content. The classification should follow the shipped result, not the publicity around the tool.
What counts as pre-generated AI content?
Pre-generated content is created with AI during development and included in the release. It may be a character illustration, a voice line, a music track, a prop, a localization draft or a set of dialogue lines. The player sees or hears a fixed result, and the game does not need to ask a model for a new result during play.
Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes this category as content that “ships with your game and is consumed by players” and was created with AI tools during development. A game can be mostly hand-authored and still contain a small amount of pre-generated AI material; the label should identify the actual asset or subsystem rather than imply that the entire game was made by AI.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What counts as live-generated AI content?
Live generation happens after the game starts. The model might write an NPC’s response, produce a quest, create an image, assemble a level, alter a character or otherwise modify the game state in response to player input. Valve calls this “any kind of content created with the help of AI tools while the game is running.”
Runtime generation is not automatically AI-native. It becomes AI-native when the model is the mechanism that makes the central form of play possible. A conventional adventure with an optional generative conversation is live-generated but may remain AI-enhanced; an open-ended conversation game whose progression depends on that model is closer to AI-native.

What makes a game AI-native?
The 2026 survey AI-Native Games: A Survey and Roadmap proposes a counterfactual test: “if the AI component were removed or trivially replaced, the central form of play would collapse or become fundamentally different.” That test focuses on function rather than marketing. Human-authored rules, prompts, art direction and safety constraints can surround an AI-native system; the requirement is that runtime generation remains indispensable to the central loop.
Does using ChatGPT or an image generator make a game AI-generated?
Not by itself. The answer depends on whether the tool’s output reaches players and whether it changes how they play.

- Private ideation: A designer asks for ten dungeon themes and writes the final design manually. This is AI-assisted production.
- Internal prototyping: A programmer uses code suggestions or generated placeholder art, then replaces them before release. The shipped game is not AI-generated on that basis.
- Fixed shipped asset: A generated portrait, music track or dialogue set remains in the released build. Describe it as pre-generated AI content and identify what players consume.
- Runtime response: The game sends a player’s input to a model and displays a new line, quest, image or level during the session. That is live-generated AI content; disclose the generated modality and the limits placed on it.
- Model as the game: Players explore, negotiate or solve problems through an open-ended model that cannot be replaced by a fixed script without changing the game’s identity. This supports the AI-native label.
The same tool can produce different classifications in different projects. “Made with ChatGPT” or “contains AI art” is too vague to tell a player whether a model is merely part of production or an active game mechanic.
Which parts of game development can generative AI affect?
Generative AI now touches the whole pipeline, but each use has a different implication for classification and disclosure.
Ideation and preproduction
Teams can prompt for concepts, mechanics, story branches, mood boards and prototype dialogue. These outputs are usually disposable or heavily rewritten. They matter to production efficiency, not to the player-facing identity of the released game unless the generated material is shipped.
Art, audio and character assets
Generative systems can assist with concept images, clothing, character models, props, textures, voices, music and animation. A 2025 review in IEEE Transactions on Games surveys uses across character workflows, including concept generation, modeling, cultural embedding, personality traits and behavior. If a generated asset appears in the final build, its provenance is relevant even when no model runs on the player’s machine.
Systems, scripting and tools
Code assistance, automated tests, localization drafts, balancing suggestions and editor automation can reduce development time. These uses may be invisible to players. They become materially player-facing when the generated code or text ships as content, or when a runtime system uses a model to determine what happens next.
Runtime visuals and actions
Microsoft Research’s WHAM project, developed with Ninja Theory, demonstrates a model that can generate game visuals, controller actions, or both. The related Nature paper highlights consistency, diversity and persistence of user modifications as important capabilities for gameplay ideation, while noting that current systems still require iterative human tweaking. Such work illustrates the technical range of game models; it does not mean every game using a model is AI-native.
Core-loop generation
At the strongest end of the spectrum, the model is the interface or rules engine through which the player plays. It may interpret free-form intentions, generate a world, remember prior choices and create new consequences. Here, the relevant question is not how many assets were generated, but whether fixed authored substitutes could preserve the central experience.

How can you classify a game consistently?
Use the following five-axis check before choosing a label. It prevents a single striking AI feature from being mistaken for the game’s entire design.
| Axis | Question to ask | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Timing | Is the output made offline or while the game runs? | Pre-generated, live-generated, or both |
| Modality | What does the model create? | Text, voice, image, music, 3D asset, animation, quest, world or mechanics |
| Player exposure | Does the player encounter the output? | Hidden production aid, visible shipped asset or interactive model |
| Core-loop dependence | Could fixed authored content replace it without changing central play? | Optional enhancement, important subsystem or indispensable mechanic |
| Governance | How is the use controlled and explained? | Disclosure, moderation, guardrails, provenance and reporting tools |
For example, a role-playing game with AI-generated portraits scores “pre-generated” on timing, “image” on modality and “visible shipped asset” on player exposure. If all quests and NPC replies are generated during play, add a live-generated text system. Only call the game AI-native if replacing that system with authored alternatives would fundamentally change the role-playing experience.
How does Steam classify games that use generative AI?
Steam’s approach is operational rather than philosophical: developers disclose AI-created content that ships with the game and is consumed by players, separating pre-generated from live-generated use.
In the Steamworks content survey, Pre-Generated refers to content made with AI tools during development that ships with the product. Live-Generated refers to content created with AI while the game is running. The survey asks developers to explain the relevant use instead of treating every machine-learning feature as generative content.
Valve’s January 10, 2024 announcement says the disclosure section asks developers to describe AI use in development and execution, review outputs for illegal or infringing material, and provide an in-game reporting system for illegal live-generated content. Developers remain responsible for the same legal and marketing commitments that apply to other game content.

How does Roblox label games that use generative AI?
Roblox requires generative-AI integrations to follow its Community Standards. Roblox-served generation is moderated by the platform, while developers remain responsible for outputs from third-party tools.
Games with player interactions that trigger generative responses must disclose those interactions in the Content Maturity questionnaire. Roblox also requires visible notices that the conversation is with AI. Extended chatbot-like interactions or cross-session memory require a Restricted label under the current guidance.
These rules make player transparency part of the product design. A developer should identify where a player can trigger generation, show the notice at the point of interaction, and account for moderation differences between Roblox-provided systems and an external model. Platform wording can change, so check the current Creator Hub guidance and questionnaire before publishing or updating a game.

What should a developer disclose to players?
A useful disclosure answers four separate questions rather than hiding behind a generic “AI used” statement.
- Authorship and provenance: Which shipped asset or system was created with generative assistance, and what human editing or selection occurred?
- Player agency: Does the player merely see a fixed result, or can an input trigger a new generation?
- Runtime dependence: Can the game continue with authored fallback content, or does generation alter the game state and central loop?
- Safety and transparency: What moderation, filtering, guardrails, reporting and visible notices apply?
State the modality and timing in plain language. “Some character portraits were generated during development” tells a player something different from “NPC replies are generated during play and may be reported through this menu.”
What are the most common classification mistakes?
Calling every machine-learning feature generative AI
Pathfinding, a behavior tree, animation blending or a recommendation model may be sophisticated AI without generating player-facing content. Label the feature according to what it does, not the broadest meaning of “AI.”
Inferring an entire pipeline from one asset
A single generated icon, background or voice line does not prove that the game’s art, writing or code was produced by AI. Identify the disclosed asset or subsystem and avoid expanding a narrow fact into a claim about the whole project.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConfusing a model-assisted tool with an AI-native game
A designer’s prompt interface, an optional chatbot or an AI-powered editor can be useful without defining the core loop. Apply the removal test: replace the model with a fixed table or authored fallback and ask whether the central play experience survives.
Ignoring the difference between fixed and live output
Fixed content affects provenance and disclosure, while live content raises additional questions about moderation, illegal material, consistency and reporting. Always state when generation occurs.
Using a platform label as a philosophical verdict
Steam’s survey is designed to collect operational information about shipped and live-generated content. Roblox’s questionnaire and notices address player interaction, maturity and safety. Neither label alone answers whether a game is artistically or technically AI-native; use the core-loop analysis as well.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you describe an AI game in a store page or review?
Lead with the player-visible fact, then add the technical context. A clear description can follow this pattern:
- Name the feature: “The game generates NPC dialogue during play,” or “Several environment textures were generated during development.”
- Specify timing: say pre-generated or live-generated.
- Specify modality: text, voice, image, music, level, quest, world or mechanics.
- Explain dependence: say whether the feature is optional, a major subsystem or the core loop.
- Explain governance: mention visible notices, moderation, guardrails and reporting where relevant.
This wording gives players enough information to understand what they will encounter without suggesting that every line of code or every pixel came from a model.

Is there an official count of AI-generated games?
No universally accepted count is established by the platform policies or research summarized here. A 2026 qualitative synthesis reports secondary estimates based on Steam disclosures, but those figures were not published by Valve as an official platform statistic. Treat counts assembled from third-party sampling as estimates with a stated method and date, not as a definitive total.
What is the practical decision rule?
Use this sequence when a label is unclear:
- List every AI or machine-learning system that affects the project.
- Remove systems that only perform conventional behavior, pathfinding, blending or recommendations unless they also generate new content.
- Mark which generative outputs are discarded, which ship as fixed assets and which are produced during play.
- Describe what players can see, hear or trigger, including the modality.
- Apply the core-loop test to live systems: would fixed authored content preserve central play?
- Publish the narrowest accurate label, then add the platform-specific disclosure and safety information.
The resulting description may be “AI-assisted production,” “a game with pre-generated AI art,” “a game with live-generated NPC dialogue,” or “AI-native.” Precision is more useful than treating “AI-generated” as an all-or-nothing marketing category.
Why do these distinctions matter?
They separate three issues that are often conflated. Provenance tells players how a shipped asset was made. Player agency tells them whether they interact with generation. Runtime dependence tells them whether the model is a defining mechanic. Safety and transparency tell them what controls exist when a model can produce unpredictable material.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keeping those dimensions separate lets a team acknowledge limited AI assistance without overstating it, while giving proper attention to a game whose identity depends on generation. It also produces the information Steam, Roblox and players need: what was generated, when, how it appears and what happens if the system fails.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do procedural-generation systems count as generative AI?
Not automatically. A hand-coded random generator or procedural grammar can create new levels without using a generative model; classify it by its actual technology and player-facing behavior. If a model generates content at runtime, describe that live system separately from ordinary procedural generation.
Does an AI-native game have to be fully autonomous?
No. Designers can author prompts, rules, world constraints, moderation filters and fallback content around the model. The defining point is that runtime generation remains indispensable to the central way players play, not that humans have no role.
Can one game have both pre-generated and live-generated AI content?
Yes. A release may include fixed generated portraits or music and also create dialogue or quests during play. Disclose the two uses separately because live generation brings different expectations about moderation, reporting and model availability.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat should players look for when a store page says a game uses AI?
Look for the timing of generation, the type of content produced and whether you can trigger it. A useful disclosure also says whether the output is fixed or changes game state, and identifies notices, moderation or reporting controls for interactive systems.
