The October 27, 2026 The Sims 4 update is a broad food, dining, and drinks quality-of-life pass—not a standalone recipe pack. It retunes food and drink prices and calories, makes hungry Sims more likely to choose leftovers, expands which dishes qualify for the Businesses & Hobbies Family Recipes feature, adds a pack-gated baking interaction, and delivers restaurant and cross-pack fixes. It does not introduce a documented new ingredient system, and the patch notes do not give a complete recipe-by-recipe list of changes.
What is the food overhaul in The Sims 4?
It is a collection of changes to existing food systems and related bugs, rather than one new cooking mode. The update touches ordinary household meals, stored food, baking, Family Recipes, restaurants, and food behavior added by other packs. That distinction matters: some changes apply broadly, while others require a particular expansion pack or affect a specific pack’s content.
The Sims Team described the update as part of a larger patch containing more than 150 bug fixes, including 25 or more fixes for Dine Out and 14 new crash and assert fixes. The food-related changes are therefore a mixture of tuning, small interaction improvements, and corrections to existing behavior—not a promise that every cooking or restaurant issue is gone.

Did food prices and calories change?
Yes. The Sims Team says it retuned pricing and calorie values for food and drink items across the base game and all packs. The stated aim is more consistent, sensible balancing, but the patch notes do not publish before-and-after values for individual dishes or drinks.
That means players can understand the scope, but cannot use the notes to determine exactly how a particular recipe’s price or calorie value changed. It would be misleading to infer a specific amount, direction, or effect for a named meal without a published item-level comparison. The change applies to food and drinks generally, not only recipes introduced in the latest update.
Calories are part of the game’s existing food tuning; the update does not describe a new nutrition interface or a new way to track a Sim’s meals. Similarly, the price pass is not a new ingredient-shopping feature. It is a balancing change to existing food and drink items.

Why are my Sims eating leftovers instead of cooking?
Hungry Sims are now more likely to eat available leftovers—whether they are in a refrigerator or sitting on a counter—instead of autonomously preparing a fresh meal. This is a preference adjustment, not a guarantee that every hungry Sim will always pick leftovers.
In a household that regularly prepares food in advance, the intended effect is less duplicate autonomous cooking and more use of meals that are already available. It also gives prepared food on a counter a better chance of being eaten rather than ignored while a Sim starts another meal. Because the notes describe what Sims are more likely to do, rather than an absolute rule, an individual choice can still vary.

The update also makes refrigerator access quicker by moving the Open interaction to the front of the refrigerator pie menu. This changes the order of a menu option; it does not create a new refrigerator inventory or replace the existing way stored food and ingredients are managed.
What changed about stored food and meal placement?
Several base-game fixes address the small interruptions around eating, not just what Sims choose to cook. Sims are more likely to remain seated while eating, and they are more likely to put dishes on dining tables or counters instead of inappropriate places. Food prepared by one Sim can also be dragged into the refrigerator by another Sim.

They do not amount to a new storage system, and they do not mean every meal or dish placement is guaranteed to behave identically in every situation.
How do Family Recipes work now?
The update expands the pool of dishes that can be used with the Family Recipes feature from Businesses & Hobbies. More than 375 dishes that already existed in the base game and packs are now eligible candidates; they are not 375 newly invented recipes.
Family Recipes is a pack feature, so owning Businesses & Hobbies is required to use it. The update broadens which existing dishes can participate in that system, including many cultural dishes. It does not replace ordinary cooking or baking, and it does not mean all food items in the game have become Family Recipes.

Why are some dishes still excluded?
EA says a small number of items remain outside the eligible pool for technical reasons or because they do not fit the intended criteria for a family dish. Graham crackers are one example given in the patch notes. The notes do not provide an exhaustive list of excluded items, so players should not assume a missing dish is a bug or that every existing food item must qualify.
The practical distinction is between eligibility and creation: the patch makes many pre-existing dishes valid candidates for a feature, but does not claim to have added each of those dishes as a new recipe to the game.
What does Quickly Decorate do in The Sims 4?
Quickly Decorate is a shorter-animation interaction for certain baked goods made with the Baking Skill when the item is not centered on a countertop. It is intended to help avoid route failures when a baked item is placed toward the back or edge of the counter.
This improvement requires Get to Work, according to the patch notes. It is a targeted interaction for baking situations, not a universal change to all cooking, decorating, or countertop routing. Players without that pack should not expect this specific interaction to be available.
Did EA finally fix Dine Out?
The update includes more than 25 Dine Out fixes aimed at restaurant reliability, but EA describes improvements rather than a complete rebuild or a guarantee that all restaurant problems are resolved. The fixes address several distinct points in the restaurant visit, from seating and customer autonomy to staff behavior and checkout.

Customer behavior and seating
Fixes target customers leaving tables to do unrelated activities, spending too long socializing before being seated, failing to interact with restaurant employees, and eating while standing. These issues can make a restaurant visit feel broken even when the restaurant itself is open, because the customers are not progressing through the expected sequence of actions.
Staff, food, and progression
The patch also addresses waiter shifts failing to start, waiter dish-cleanup failures, and incorrect cooking-skill progression on some Dine Out recipes. Table-footprint problems are included as well, addressing how tables occupy or fit within a restaurant space. Customers leaving food or drinks unconsumed before checkout is another targeted issue.
These fixes cover a wide range of failure points, but they should be read as reliability work on the existing restaurant system. The update notes do not say that every restaurant bug has been permanently resolved; EA also asks players to continue reporting issues.
Which other packs and food behaviors are affected?
The patch includes food-related corrections across several packs, so not every change is part of the same feature or available to every player. The broad base-game improvements concern seating, dish placement, food storage, refrigerator access, leftovers, and tuning. The pack-specific items below adjust particular activities or foods:
Recommended Free Tools
- Outdoor cooking: Sims should no longer autonomously use grills during snow, rain, ice, or storms.
- Drinks: Autonomy for Fizzy Juice, seltzer, and kombucha is adjusted.
- Cottage Living: Sims can grill salmon or cook raspberry pie while Simple Living is active.
- Horse Ranch: Nectar quantities are reported correctly.
- For Rent: Overuse of the pressure cooker is reduced.
- Outdoor Retreat: Sims should no longer abandon eating to play horseshoes.
- Tartosa food stall: The Chinese-inspired stall now sells food rather than produce.
These are corrections to pack-linked behaviors, not evidence of a single new food feature shared by all packs. The availability of an individual item or activity depends on owning the relevant pack and having the associated content in the game.

Which cooking changes are base game, and which need packs?
The clearest way to separate the changes is by whether they are broad tuning and household fixes or pack-specific functionality. The update notes describe price and calorie tuning across the base game and packs, while Family Recipes and Quickly Decorate have explicit pack requirements.
| Change | What it affects | Pack dependency stated in the notes |
|---|---|---|
| Food and drink price and calorie tuning | Items across the base game and all packs | None specified for the tuning pass |
| Leftover preference and refrigerator menu order | Autonomous eating and refrigerator access | None specified |
| Expanded Family Recipes eligibility | More than 375 existing dishes eligible for the feature | Businesses & Hobbies required |
| Quickly Decorate | Some Baking Skill goods placed off-center on a countertop | Get to Work required |
| Restaurant reliability fixes | Restaurant customer, staff, food, and table behavior | Dine Out content |
The table distinguishes access to a feature from the scope of a patch note. For example, a tuning pass across all packs does not mean a player must own every pack to receive the base-game update; pack-dependent features still require their named content.
What does this update not tell players?
The patch notes do not provide a complete recipe-by-recipe price list, calorie list, ingredient list, or inventory of all dishes newly eligible for Family Recipes. They also do not say that all 375-plus dishes are new, that every Sim will choose leftovers, or that every Dine Out issue is fixed.
Nor do the notes describe a physical product needed to use the changes. The relevant items are the game and, for particular features, expansion packs; no special controller, manual, cookbook, or collectible is identified as necessary for this overhaul.
What should I check if food behavior breaks after updating?
A post-patch problem is not automatically caused by the food changes. EA says some crash reports remain linked to outdated or conflicting mod files and directs players who use mods to its Mods & Game Updates Guide. If a problem appears after updating a modded game, checking whether custom content or mods are current and compatible is a reasonable first troubleshooting step; the patch notes do not establish that every food or restaurant issue has a mod-related cause.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell whether my game has the October 2026 update?
Compare the version shown for your platform with PC 1.129.39.1030, Mac 1.129.39.1230, or console 2.40. If it differs, the version may reflect a later update or a platform-specific release rather than this patch.
Do I need every expansion pack to get the food overhaul?
No single pack is stated as a requirement for the broad tuning and household fixes. The named pack requirements apply to specific features, such as Family Recipes eligibility and Quickly Decorate.
