Graph database query languages let applications create, find, update, delete, and analyze nodes, relationships, properties, or RDF triples. Cypher and GQL primarily query property graphs, Gremlin expresses traversals, and SPARQL queries RDF graphs. The right choice depends first on the graph model, then on workload, vendor support, portability, and tooling.

Unlike SQL, which usually connects rows through joins and foreign keys, graph query languages make relationships, paths, and multi-hop patterns explicit. That difference makes graph questions easier to express, but it does not make every graph database faster than a relational database or every graph language interchangeable.

Key takeaways

  • Property graphs use vertices and edges with properties; RDF graphs use subject–predicate–object triples, so the two models commonly require different query languages.
  • Cypher is a declarative property-graph language, Gremlin is Apache TinkerPop’s traversal language, and SPARQL 1.1 is the W3C-standard language for RDF.
  • GQL, published as ISO/IEC 39075:2024 in April 2024, is the international standard for querying and managing property graphs, but product support may cover only part of the standard.
  • “Supports Cypher,” “supports Gremlin,” or “supports GQL” does not guarantee identical syntax, functions, query plans, procedures, or transaction behavior across products.
  • Choose the language after choosing the graph model and workload: operational patterns, explicit traversals, semantic knowledge graphs, analytics, or multi-model data.

What does a graph database query language do?

A graph database query language is the interface used to ask questions of graph data and perform operations on that data. A language can match nodes and edges, filter labels or properties, find paths, traverse relationships, return aggregates, insert or update graph elements, delete data, and use schemas or constraints when the database supports those features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Graph query languages are not the same thing as a graph database engine. The engine stores data and executes queries. A graph data model determines how data is represented. A driver or API sends a query from Python, Java, JavaScript, Go, or another application. A visual query builder may generate a query behind the scenes, but the builder is not necessarily the database language itself.

Graph query languages also do not automatically include graph analytics. A database may let a query retrieve a path while exposing PageRank, community detection, centrality, similarity, connected components, or embeddings through separate procedures, libraries, notebooks, or analytics APIs.

Why are there multiple graph database query languages?

Multiple graph database query languages exist because graph databases do not all represent data in the same way or serve the same workload. Four forces explain most of the variety.

  1. Different graph models: RDF represents statements as triples, while property graphs represent vertices and edges that can carry properties.
  2. Different programming styles: Declarative languages describe a desired pattern; traversal languages describe a sequence of graph steps.
  3. Different workloads: A fraud-detection lookup, semantic knowledge-graph query, graph algorithm, and data-integration task may need different capabilities.
  4. Different ecosystems: Cypher grew around Neo4j, Gremlin around Apache TinkerPop, and SPARQL through W3C’s RDF standards. These ecosystems developed independently before broader property-graph standardization.

What is the difference between property graphs and RDF graphs?

The most important choice is the graph data model. Property graphs use nodes, relationships, labels or types, and properties. RDF uses subject–predicate–object statements, usually identified with IRIs, literals, datatypes, vocabularies, and often ontologies.

Amazon Neptune illustrates why the distinction matters: Neptune documents Gremlin and openCypher for property-graph data and SPARQL for RDF data. The interfaces are not interchangeable; SPARQL cannot query Neptune property-graph data, and Gremlin or openCypher cannot query Neptune RDF data.

How do graph query languages differ from SQL?

SQL primarily describes operations over tables, rows, and columns. Graph query languages describe patterns and traversals over connected entities. A relational schema can represent relationships with foreign keys and join tables, but a graph language places the relationship structure directly in the query shape.

SQL concept Graph-query equivalent Practical difference
Rows and tables Nodes, edges, labels, properties, or triples The query follows connected entities rather than primarily scanning table relationships.
Foreign-key joins Relationship patterns or traversal steps Multi-hop paths are expressed as graph structure.
SELECT ... FROM ... JOIN A pattern such as (a)-[:KNOWS]->(b) The relationship type and direction can appear directly in the query.
Tabular aggregation Aggregates over matched nodes, edges, paths, or triples Aggregation remains possible, but the input can be a relationship pattern.

Graph languages make relationship-centric questions easier to express; they do not guarantee better performance. Performance depends on data shape, selectivity, indexes, cardinality, number of hops, engine implementation, distribution, partitioning, workload type, and result size. A well-designed relational database remains a strong choice for many tabular workloads.

Which are the main graph database query languages?

What are Cypher and openCypher?

Cypher is a declarative graph query language associated with Neo4j and property graphs. Neo4j describes Cypher as a language in which users specify what they want to retrieve rather than how the database should retrieve it; see the Neo4j Cypher overview.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
MATCH (person:Person)-[:KNOWS]->(friend:Person)
WHERE person.name = 'Alice'
RETURN friend.name;

In this example, MATCH describes a graph pattern, person:Person identifies a node variable and label, [:KNOWS] identifies a relationship type, and the arrow specifies direction. WHERE filters the match and RETURN projects the result.

Cypher is often approachable for developers familiar with SQL because both languages are declarative, although their data models and syntax differ. Cypher is useful for fixed and variable-length relationship patterns, fraud analysis, recommendations, knowledge networks, and application queries.

openCypher is not simply another name for every Cypher implementation. The openCypher project describes openCypher as an open-source specification for Cypher and says its evolution is moving toward ISO/IEC GQL. Neo4j’s current Cypher implementation may include capabilities that are absent from another product’s openCypher-compatible subset. Query functions, path semantics, procedures, indexes, transaction behavior, planner optimizations, and endpoint protocols can differ.

What is GQL?

GQL is the international standard for querying and managing property graphs. ISO lists ISO/IEC 39075:2024, “Information technology — Database languages — GQL,” as published in April 2024; the standard defines structures and basic operations for creating, accessing, querying, maintaining, and controlling property graphs.

GQL’s purpose includes improving portability among property-graph implementations. GQL is not a synonym for Cypher, openCypher, Gremlin, or SPARQL. Existing Cypher-related work contributed to the standardization effort, but the specifications and product implementations must still be distinguished.

GQL becoming an international standard does not mean every graph database implements the complete ISO language. A product may support a subset, a compatibility mode, extensions, or proprietary syntax. Teams evaluating GQL should ask which edition and features a specific database implements rather than assuming that a query written for one GQL product will run unchanged on another.

What is Gremlin?

Gremlin is Apache TinkerPop’s graph traversal language, not a database. The Apache TinkerPop documentation describes Gremlin traversals as sequences of steps that can filter, transform, aggregate, branch, follow paths, or cause side effects.

g.V().
  has('name', 'Alice').
  out('knows').
  values('name')

The traversal starts with vertices using g.V(), selects the vertex whose name is Alice, follows outgoing knows edges, and returns the connected vertices’ names. The step-by-step form gives developers explicit control over traversal behavior and path processing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gremlin fits applications requiring variable-depth traversals, path manipulation, graph algorithms, or a TinkerPop provider ecosystem. Apache TinkerPop describes Gremlin as usable with online transactional graph systems and online analytical graph systems, subject to provider capabilities. A provider may not support every step or every execution mode. The TinkerPop provider list includes systems such as Amazon Neptune, JanusGraph, Cosmos DB, ArangoDB, and Stardog; the list is informational, not an Apache endorsement.

Gremlin can be less immediately readable than a declarative pattern for a simple business question. Gremlin may also be embedded in a host language or submitted as serialized text, so teams should check provider compatibility and parameterize user input safely.

What is SPARQL?

SPARQL is the W3C-standard query language for RDF graphs. The W3C SPARQL 1.1 Query specification defines its syntax and semantics for RDF data; the recommendation is dated March 21, 2013.

WHERE {
  ?person <http://example.com/name> "Alice" .

SPARQL is a natural fit for semantic-web data, linked data, ontologies, vocabularies, and knowledge graphs assembled from multiple sources. RDF’s IRI, literal, datatype, and vocabulary model can feel more complex to developers who are used to property graphs. SPARQL does not map one-to-one onto Cypher or Gremlin because the underlying representation and semantics differ. The W3C’s evolving SPARQL material should be treated as a work in progress unless a final publication status is verified.

What are AQL, GSQL, nGQL, and SQL graph extensions?

Vendor-specific languages matter when a product’s features are more important than cross-product portability.

Language or category Associated model or ecosystem When it fits Main qualification
AQL ArangoDB multi-model database Applications combining documents, key-value data, and graphs It is product-specific and is not a general replacement for Cypher, GQL, Gremlin, or SPARQL.
GSQL TigerGraph property graph Property-graph querying, loading, analytics, and procedural graph workloads Feature and version support should be checked against current TigerGraph documentation.
nGQL NebulaGraph property graph Distributed graph applications using the NebulaGraph ecosystem Syntax and compatibility should be verified against the target NebulaGraph version.
SQL graph extensions Relational databases with graph features Teams retaining SQL tools, tables, and relational operations while adding graph patterns SQL graph features, SQL/PGQ, and GQL are related but not interchangeable labels.

Vendor languages can expose valuable algorithms, loading features, document operations, or execution controls. The trade-off is potential lock-in: application queries, procedures, drivers, data types, and operational tooling may require significant changes during migration.

How does the same graph question look in different languages?

The question “Who are Alice’s friends?” uses different syntax in each language because each example assumes a different model or execution style. The following examples are conceptual comparisons, not a promise that the examples can be copied unchanged between products.

Language Conceptual query What the query emphasizes
Cypher MATCH (a:Person {name: 'Alice'})-[:KNOWS]->(friend) RETURN friend.name; A property-graph pattern with a node, label, relationship type, and direction
Gremlin g.V().has('name', 'Alice').out('knows').values('name') A sequence of traversal steps
SPARQL SELECT ?name WHERE { ?alice <http://example.com/name> "Alice" . ?alice <http://example.com/knows> ?friend . ?friend <http://example.com/name> ?name . } RDF triple patterns and variables

Amazon Neptune’s graph examples similarly demonstrate how Gremlin, openCypher, and SPARQL express graph questions through different interfaces. Similar-looking answers do not make the languages semantically interchangeable.

What is the difference between declarative and traversal graph languages?

Declarative graph languages describe the pattern or result the application wants, while traversal languages describe the operations used to move through the graph.

Style Examples Advantages Trade-offs
Declarative pattern matching Cypher, openCypher, GQL, SPARQL Readable business patterns; the engine can choose an execution plan; convenient for filtering and projection Exact planner behavior, supported features, and optimization controls vary by implementation.
Traversal-oriented Gremlin Explicit steps; useful for path processing, branching, variable-depth traversal, and algorithmic workflows Long traversals can be harder to read and provider support can differ by step and execution mode.

The distinction is useful but not absolute. Declarative languages can expose procedures, and traversal languages can be used in higher-level application abstractions. The right style depends on whether the team mainly expresses business patterns or needs detailed control over traversal behavior.

How should you choose a graph database query language?

Choose the language by evaluating the data model first, then the workload and implementation you will actually deploy.

Which language fits each graph model and workload?

Need Likely starting point Why
Readable property-graph application queries Cypher or openCypher Pattern syntax makes nodes, relationships, labels, and paths explicit.
Standards-oriented property-graph portability GQL ISO/IEC 39075:2024 provides an international property-graph language standard, subject to implementation coverage.
Explicit traversals and TinkerPop providers Gremlin Step-based traversal is useful for path processing and provider ecosystems.
RDF, ontologies, linked data, or semantic knowledge graphs SPARQL SPARQL is designed for RDF and integrates with RDF vocabularies and semantic-web standards.
Graph plus documents or key-value data AQL or the selected multi-model product’s language A unified product language can reduce the need to operate separate data systems.
Large-scale graph analytics GSQL, Gremlin with supported analytics, or a vendor analytics API Analytics and procedural capabilities may matter more than pattern syntax.
Existing relational and SQL operations SQL graph extensions The organization can retain SQL tooling while adding graph capabilities.

What should you verify before selecting a product?

  1. Graph model: Confirm whether the database uses a property graph, RDF, both, or a product-specific representation.
  2. Language implementation: Identify the exact language version, supported clauses, functions, procedures, and compatibility subset.
  3. Read and write features: Verify support for inserts, updates, deletes, transactions, indexes, constraints, schema operations, and bulk loading.
  4. Path behavior: Check variable-length paths, recursion limits, direction rules, cycle handling, duplicate-path behavior, and maximum result sizes.
  5. Analytics: Determine whether shortest paths, centrality, community detection, similarity, and other algorithms are language features, procedures, or separate APIs.
  6. Operations: Inspect query plans, timeouts, profiling tools, backups, high availability, disaster recovery, and monitoring.
  7. Application integration: Check official drivers, parameterization support, authentication, connection protocols, and language bindings.
  8. Portability: Test representative queries against the exact products and versions under consideration. A familiar language name is not sufficient.
  9. Workload: Separate interactive OLTP queries, batch processing, OLAP analytics, and mixed workloads.
  10. Total cost: Compare compute, storage, network, requests or I/O, analytics, managed-service features, support, and migration costs.

Why are graph query languages not automatically portable?

Language compatibility can differ in syntax, functions, null handling, path semantics, variable-length patterns, index usage, procedures, transaction behavior, planner optimizations, authentication, and endpoint protocols. A database may advertise Cypher or Gremlin support while implementing only a subset or adding proprietary extensions.

Amazon Neptune publishes standards-compliance and implementation details for its graph interfaces. That kind of product-specific documentation is more useful than relying on a language label alone.

Use the following portability process:

  1. Write representative reads, writes, path queries, aggregations, and error-handling cases.
  2. Run the cases against the exact database editions and versions being evaluated.
  3. Compare returned values, ordering, null behavior, duplicate paths, transaction results, and failure modes.
  4. Record every vendor-specific function, procedure, hint, driver feature, and deployment assumption.
  5. Measure the workload with realistic data shape, indexes, cardinality, concurrency, and result sizes.

What performance and security problems should you expect?

Why can variable-length paths become expensive?

Unrestricted or weakly filtered path searches can produce huge intermediate result sets, duplicate paths, cycles, high memory use, and long execution times. The risk increases when the starting node is not selective or when the query explores many hops across a highly connected graph.

Reduce the risk by bounding path length, choosing selective starting points, filtering early, returning only required properties, inspecting execution plans, limiting result sizes, and setting timeouts where the product supports them. Query performance must be tested on the target engine; a language comparison without workload evidence cannot establish that Cypher, Gremlin, SPARQL, or another language is universally faster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should graph queries be protected from injection?

Graph query languages require parameterization just as SQL does. Concatenating user input into Cypher, Gremlin, SPARQL, AQL, or another query string can allow query injection, unintended data access, or destructive mutations.

Use the target driver’s parameter-binding mechanism, validate identifiers that cannot be bound as values, restrict write permissions, separate read and write credentials, apply query timeouts and result limits, and test malicious input. Parameterization does not remove the need for authorization or least-privilege database roles.

How are graph query languages different from GraphQL?

GraphQL is primarily an API query language and runtime, not a storage-model-specific graph database language. The official GraphQL site describes GraphQL as an API technology that can sit in front of different backends. A GraphQL service can use a graph database, relational database, REST services, or custom application code.

Technology Primary role Underlying storage requirement
Cypher, GQL, Gremlin, SPARQL Query or mutate graph data in a database or graph-processing system Depends on the language and its graph model
GraphQL Let API clients request fields from a typed application schema No particular database is required

GraphQL can be placed in front of Neo4j, an RDF store, or another database, but GraphQL does not replace Cypher, Gremlin, or SPARQL at the storage layer unless application code translates the API request into those languages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which graph query language should a beginner learn?

Learn Cypher first when the goal is an approachable introduction to property-graph pattern matching and the target ecosystem uses Neo4j or openCypher. Learn Gremlin when a target system is built around Apache TinkerPop or when explicit traversal steps are central to the application. Learn SPARQL when the data is RDF or the project depends on ontologies, linked data, and semantic-web standards.

Study GQL when standards-based property-graph portability is important, while checking which implementations are available for the project. Learn a vendor-specific language such as AQL, GSQL, or nGQL when the selected product’s multi-model, analytics, distributed, or procedural capabilities justify the ecosystem commitment.

The transferable skill is not memorizing one syntax. Learn to identify the graph model, define the intended path and cardinality, constrain traversal, inspect execution behavior, parameterize values, and distinguish standardized features from vendor extensions.

What does choosing a graph database platform involve?

Query-language fit should follow data-model and workload fit. Neo4j is a natural product to evaluate for an approachable property-graph and Cypher experience; Amazon Neptune is relevant when a managed AWS service and both property-graph and RDF interfaces matter; ArangoDB is relevant when graph, document, and key-value data must coexist; JanusGraph and other TinkerPop providers fit teams prioritizing open-source deployment and Gremlin; Stardog and other RDF platforms fit ontology and SPARQL-centered knowledge graphs.

For example, the Amazon Neptune pricing page describes on-demand, serverless, and Database Savings Plans pricing. The page gives an example of a db.r5.large instance at $0.348 per hour, calculated as $250.56 for a 30-day month in US East (N. Virginia). That example is region-, configuration-, and date-dependent; it is not a universal deployment quote.

Before buying, compare supported models and languages, managed versus self-managed operation, trial or free-tier availability, region availability, drivers, backups, high availability, analytics, visualization, security, support, pricing basis, and migration difficulty. A product should not be selected merely because its marketing page says “graph queries.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Cypher the same as GQL?

Cypher and GQL are related but are not identical language specifications. Cypher is associated with Neo4j, openCypher is an open specification, and GQL is the international property-graph standard ISO/IEC 39075:2024; individual products may support different subsets and extensions.

Is Gremlin a graph database?

No. Gremlin is Apache TinkerPop’s graph traversal language. Gremlin runs against graph database or graph-processing providers, and each provider can differ in supported steps, execution modes, and capabilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is SPARQL only for the semantic web?

SPARQL is designed for RDF graphs and is strongly associated with semantic-web, linked-data, ontology, and knowledge-graph workloads. RDF platforms can also use SPARQL for broader graph data, but SPARQL is not a direct substitute for property-graph languages.

Can SQL query a graph database?

SQL can query some graph systems through SQL graph extensions or product-specific features, and some relational databases add graph capabilities. SQL graph extensions, SQL/PGQ, and GQL are related concepts but are not automatically interchangeable.

Can one graph database support multiple query languages?

Yes, some products expose multiple interfaces for different graph models or compatibility goals. Amazon Neptune, for example, documents Gremlin and openCypher for property graphs and SPARQL for RDF; the interfaces query different models rather than providing interchangeable syntax.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose a graph database query language by starting with the data model. Use Cypher or openCypher for readable property-graph patterns, Gremlin for explicit TinkerPop traversals, SPARQL for RDF and semantic knowledge graphs, and GQL when standards-based property-graph portability is a priority. Treat vendor compatibility claims as version-specific, constrain multi-hop queries, parameterize inputs, and test real workloads before choosing a database.
