In 2017, Apple said it planned to expand access to the machines at selected authorized repair centers; that announcement is historical, not a new 2026 rollout. Apple later moved at least one display-calibration task to software, and it does not publish a current directory of Horizon Machine locations.
What was Apple’s Horizon Machine?
Horizon was proprietary Apple repair equipment used after a replacement display was installed. It communicated with the iPhone to pair or calibrate replacement hardware, then used a mechanical probe to check touch response. These steps helped the phone recognize components and restore functions that depend on hardware recognition.
Reuters described the machine as particularly useful in difficult repairs involving a damaged fingerprint sensor attached to the rear of the glass. The machine could tell the iPhone’s processor to recognize a replacement sensor, helping preserve Touch ID and related functions. Reuters reported that the communication and calibration sequence took about 10–12 minutes; a Central News Agency report from an authorized Taipei repair center described about 10 minutes of communication before mechanical touch testing.
What Apple announced in 2017
On June 7, 2017, Apple said it aimed to place Horizon Machines in about 400 authorized third-party repair centers across 25 countries by the end of that year. The initial target was 200 providers, about 4% of the 4,800 authorized service providers Apple then had worldwide. These were announced targets, not confirmation that every planned installation was completed.

The stated purpose was to let more authorized providers perform display repairs in-house and reduce waits at busy Apple retail locations. Apple service executive Brian Naumann described the effort as a way to expand the company’s reach.
Why replacement screens may need calibration
A screen repair can involve more than attaching a display. The replacement hardware may need to be recognized or calibrated by the phone, and touch response must be checked. Some functions also depend on related components, such as the fingerprint sensor. Horizon combined communication with the phone and a mechanical touch test to support those steps.

What changed after Horizon
In September 2018, MacRumors reported that Apple moved display calibration for iPhone 6s and newer to a software process running on a Mac mini or MacBook Air. This removed the need for the 3D Touch Calibration Fixture for that calibration step and was presented as a way to make repair workspaces more flexible, reduce waits, and enable more authorized providers to offer display repairs.
This change concerned a specific calibration task; it does not establish that all Horizon functions or all later iPhone repairs use the same process. Apple’s current public repair information also does not identify which locations, if any, still use Horizon Machines.

Where to get an authorized iPhone screen repair
Apple’s current environmental FAQ identifies four repair channels: Apple Stores, Apple Authorized Service Providers, Independent Repair Providers, and Self Service Repair. Apple says qualifying Independent Repair Providers can access genuine Apple parts, tools, diagnostics, and training. The FAQ does not provide a public list of Horizon Machine locations, so ask the provider directly about its equipment, model support, parts, and expected turnaround.
- Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider: Contact a location to confirm repair availability for your iPhone model and ask about timing and cost.
- Independent Repair Provider: Apple’s program is for qualifying businesses with access to genuine parts, tools, diagnostics, and training; confirm the provider’s current capabilities and repair terms.
- Self Service Repair: Apple lists this as a repair option. Check model compatibility and the instructions and parts available for your specific device before beginning.
For any channel, compare whether the provider can perform required display and biometric checks, the parts used, the total quoted cost, turnaround time, and any effect on warranty or service coverage. Authorization alone does not tell you whether a particular shop has a Horizon Machine.
