An AI-stock selloff could hurt long-term investors most through concentrated exposure and high expectations—not because a price drop alone proves that AI has failed. If a few large technology companies make up a substantial share of your individual stocks or index funds, their decline can weigh heavily on your portfolio. The practical response is to check what you own, why you own it, and whether your plan can withstand a prolonged drawdown, rather than trying to predict the market bottom.
That distinction matters because AI’s long-run productivity potential and today’s share prices are separate questions. A company can benefit from AI while its stock falls if investors had priced in faster growth, higher margins, or more certain returns than the business ultimately delivers.
Why could an AI-stock selloff affect long-term investors?
It could affect investors through three channels: the weight of AI-linked companies in their portfolios, the expectations embedded in those companies’ prices, and financial connections that can amplify a decline. The exposure is not limited to people who deliberately bought AI stocks: large companies associated with AI also appear in broad market funds and retirement accounts.

A market-cap-weighted index gives greater influence to companies with larger market values. That means a fund tracking a broad index can be diversified across many holdings yet still depend heavily on a relatively small group of very large companies. The International Monetary Fund reported that the Magnificent 7 represented 33% of the S&P 500 in 2025. That figure describes those seven companies’ share of the index at the time of the IMF’s report; it does not mean that all seven are pure AI businesses or that the index is a dedicated AI fund.

The distinction is between the number of holdings and the sources of portfolio risk. Owning hundreds of companies does not ensure that returns are evenly spread if a few companies account for a large portion of the fund’s value. The IMF’s October 2025 Global Financial Stability Report described concentration within the S&P 500 as historically high, with a narrow group of mega-cap IT and AI-related firms driving the broader index.
Household exposure can extend beyond brokerage accounts
The IMF reported in 2025 that US household equities amounted to about 30% of household assets. That broad measure is a reminder that a sharp equity decline can matter beyond investors’ separately managed stock picks: households may have exposure through retirement savings and other equity investments. It is not a measure of every household’s portfolio, nor does it identify how much of that exposure is specifically tied to AI.
Does a falling AI stock mean the AI boom is over?
No. A share-price decline tells you that the market’s valuation or expectations have changed; it does not, by itself, establish whether AI will raise productivity over time. The Bank of England has said AI has the potential to raise productivity across sectors and support long-term economic growth, while also warning that current valuations depend on successful infrastructure build-out, continued access to financing, and the pace of adoption.

Those two statements can both be true. A technology may prove useful and widely adopted, while some companies that invested heavily in it fail to earn returns that justify their earlier share prices. Conversely, prices can fall on fears that later prove too pessimistic. The question for an investor is not simply whether AI is important; it is whether a particular business can convert that importance into durable revenue, profits, and cash flow at a price that leaves room for uncertainty.
Separate the technology thesis from the stock thesis
A long-term view that AI will matter is not a complete investment case. For a company, the stock case also depends on factors such as how much it must spend to build infrastructure, whether customers will pay for the resulting products, how quickly revenue grows, and whether margins remain attractive as competitors enter. If the price assumes unusually rapid growth for years, even a successful business can disappoint investors when results fall short of that path.
The Federal Reserve’s Financial Stability Report of May 2026 said equity valuation pressures were elevated: S&P 500 price-to-earnings measures remained in the upper part of their historical distribution, while the equity premium remained well below its historical average. Those indicators describe broad market valuation conditions, not a guarantee that prices will fall or a precise valuation for any one AI company. They do help explain why a change in assumptions about future earnings could have an outsized effect on prices.

How can concentration, leverage, and market positioning make losses worse?
A selloff can spread more quickly or become larger than a change in company earnings alone would suggest. Concentrated ownership, correlated trading, and leverage can reinforce one another as investors reassess risk or need to reduce positions.
Correlated holdings can fall together
Investors may own different funds or stocks that appear separate but respond to the same factors—for example, expectations for AI spending, financing, or future technology earnings. If these holdings move together during a downturn, having several of them does not provide as much protection as their different names suggest. The Bank of England’s July 2026 Financial Stability Report warned that a reassessment of AI prospects could trigger falling equity prices, amplified by high concentration and correlated momentum-driven positions that can exacerbate volatility as markets fall.
Debt and commitments link companies and investors
Leverage can magnify outcomes: a company or investor with debt has obligations that do not automatically shrink when asset values decline. Broader financing relationships can also connect firms, lenders, investors, and suppliers. The IMF’s October 2026 analysis reviewed 14 transactions involving about $300 billion in equity investments, $650 billion in debt, and $1.4 trillion in future revenue commitments. These figures describe the transactions reviewed by the IMF, not a forecast of losses or a total measure of all AI-related financing.
For an individual investor, the practical lesson is narrower than assuming these commitments will cause a crisis: a portfolio concentrated in volatile thematic stocks can be more vulnerable if financing conditions tighten or expectations for future revenues weaken. Avoiding borrowed money for a thematic position limits the risk that a market decline forces you to sell at an unfavorable time.
How much of an index fund is really exposed to AI?
There is no single percentage that applies to every index fund or every definition of “AI exposure.” Start with the fund’s current holdings and weights, then distinguish companies whose business depends directly on AI from broad technology and other firms that may benefit indirectly. The IMF’s 33% figure for the Magnificent 7 in the S&P 500 in 2025 is a useful concentration reference, not an exact measure of that index’s AI exposure or a current weight for every fund.
- List each fund and account. Include workplace retirement plans, individual retirement accounts, taxable brokerage accounts, and any thematic funds. A single company can appear in several holdings, so looking at each account in isolation can understate total exposure.
- Check the underlying holdings and weights. Use the fund provider’s holdings information or the account’s fund documents. Look for the largest positions and sector allocations, and note the date of the holdings snapshot because weights change with prices and periodic index changes.
- Look through overlapping funds. If two funds own the same large companies, combine the exposure rather than treating each fund as an independent source of diversification. A broad index fund and a technology fund, for instance, may share major holdings even though their labels differ.
- Classify what the exposure means to you. Separate direct reliance on a few AI-linked businesses from wider exposure to diversified companies that may use or sell AI. The former makes portfolio results more dependent on those firms’ prospects; the latter may spread business risks more broadly, though it does not eliminate market risk.
- Compare the result with your intended allocation. Decide whether the concentration is an intentional position you can tolerate or an accidental result of overlapping funds. Base any changes on your allocation policy and circumstances, not just the latest headline.
How should long-term investors decide whether to sell?
There is no evidence-based sell-or-hold rule that applies to every investor. A decision should reflect why you own the investment, how much of your portfolio depends on it, when you need the money, and whether the business case still holds—not just whether the stock has fallen.

Review the position against your reason for owning it
Write down the assumptions your investment depends on. For an AI-linked company, those might include the pace of adoption, customer demand, expected infrastructure spending, margins, access to financing, and competitive pressure. Then compare new company information with those assumptions. A lower share price alone may not invalidate a long-term thesis; evidence that the business cannot achieve the earnings or cash flows the thesis requires may.
Match risk to your time horizon and liquidity needs
Money needed soon should not depend on a rapid recovery in growth stocks. A long time horizon can give an investor more time to ride out volatility, but it does not make a concentrated position safe or guarantee that it will recover. Consider both your capacity to absorb losses without disrupting essential plans and your willingness to stay invested through a prolonged decline.
Use a portfolio rule instead of an all-or-nothing forecast
Investors who have set target allocations can rebalance toward them when appropriate, rather than trying to sell at the exact top or buy at the exact bottom. Rebalancing means bringing a portfolio back toward its chosen mix after market moves have changed the weights. It is a discipline, not a promise of profit, and the right timing depends on the investor’s plan and account.

Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAvoid adding leverage to a volatile thematic investment. Borrowing can turn a paper loss into a forced sale if the investor cannot meet obligations or withstand a decline. Keeping near-term spending needs in assets not dependent on a quick recovery also reduces the chance that market timing is dictated by a bill that comes due.
Should long-term investors buy the dip?
A lower price is not enough to establish that a stock or fund is a bargain. Buying more may fit a long-term allocation plan if the investor can bear the risk and the investment still serves its intended role; it is not justified simply by the assumption that a recent high will return.
Before adding, ask whether the original investment case remains plausible, whether the position would become too large after the purchase, and whether the money may be needed soon. The evidence from the Federal Reserve, IMF, and Bank of England identifies vulnerabilities and possible scenarios; it does not provide a reliable market-bottom date or a precise probability of an AI-led crash. Staggering decisions or following a predetermined allocation can reduce reliance on a single timing call, though neither approach removes investment risk.

Could an AI stock crash take down the whole market?
It could cause broader market and economic effects, but the scale and duration are uncertain. The Atlanta Fed modeled S&P 500 declines of 25%, 35%, and 50% in 2026 and examined how those declines could affect consumption through the equity-wealth channel. The Bank of England’s 2026 severe scenario modeled a 45% fall in US equities over six quarters. These are scenario exercises, not predictions that those declines will happen or estimates of a specific AI crash’s likely path.
The scenarios matter because a stock-market decline can affect spending as well as investment accounts. If households feel less wealthy, they may reduce consumption, which can affect businesses and the wider economy. But how much that channel matters depends on the size and duration of the fall, household circumstances, and the broader economic setting. A sharp decline in a concentrated group of stocks is not automatically equivalent to a collapse in every sector or a broad financial crisis.
What should investors monitor besides stock prices?
Use business and market evidence that bears on the investment case instead of treating daily price moves as a verdict on AI. Federal Reserve data for 2026 put the latest US business AI adoption at about 10%, with about 14% planning adoption. These figures indicate adoption is growing but incomplete; they are not a forecast of how quickly adoption will spread, how much companies will spend, or which vendors will earn profits.
- Adoption: Is use spreading beyond early adopters, and are customers renewing or expanding their use?
- Revenue and cash flow: Are companies producing realized sales and cash flow, or does the thesis still depend mainly on distant earnings assumptions?
- Margins and capital spending: Are infrastructure costs and investment translating into sustainable returns, or are they rising faster than monetizable demand?
- Financing conditions: Can companies continue funding projects on workable terms, particularly where the business case assumes substantial future investment?
- Competition: Are competitors putting pressure on pricing, margins, or the ability of a company to retain customers?
- Portfolio exposure: Have changing market weights made your holdings more dependent on a few companies than your written allocation allows?
No single indicator settles the question. Adoption can rise while a particular company loses ground; strong revenue can still disappoint if the market expected more; and a falling share price can reflect positioning or risk appetite as well as a change in business prospects. Read company results and portfolio weights in context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do different portfolio choices change the risk?
The key comparison is not simply “AI stock” versus “non-AI stock.” It is how much a portfolio depends on a small number of companies, how much future earnings its valuation assumes, and whether its holdings provide genuinely different sources of return.
| Portfolio choice | Concentration and valuation dependence | What to examine | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| One or a few AI-linked stocks | Results depend heavily on the selected companies and their future earnings expectations. | Revenue, cash flow, balance-sheet strength, investment needs, financing access, margins, and competitive position. | Potentially greater company-specific upside and downside; limited diversification across holdings. |
| Broad market fund with large technology weights | Many holdings, but large companies can drive a substantial share of performance; the S&P 500’s Magnificent 7 share was 33% in the IMF’s 2025 report. | Current company and sector weights, overlap with other funds, and how those weights fit your allocation. | Broader business exposure than a handful of stocks, but concentration can remain meaningful. |
| Portfolio diversified across sectors and geographies | Less dependent on any one group when holdings have distinct business and market exposures; diversification does not prevent losses during a broad decline. | Actual country and sector allocations, underlying holdings, valuation assumptions, and correlation among positions. | Can reduce reliance on a narrow group, while introducing other risks and not guaranteeing a better return. |
| Near-term spending reserve separated from volatile holdings | Reduces dependence on selling growth stocks to fund imminent spending. | Timing and size of expected withdrawals, and whether the reserve is held in assets appropriate to those needs. | Less exposure of near-term plans to a rapid stock-market recovery; the reserve is not a substitute for a long-term investment allocation. |
These choices are not mutually exclusive. A diversified fund may own leading AI companies, and a portfolio holding multiple funds may still be concentrated if those funds share the same largest positions. Evaluate the combined portfolio rather than relying on labels such as “broad,” “technology,” or “AI.”

What is the most defensible plan when the timing is unknowable?
Build a plan around what you can control: exposure, leverage, liquidity, and the conditions that would change your investment thesis. The institutional scenarios describe vulnerabilities, not a timetable. The scale and duration of any selloff would depend on earnings, interest rates, financing conditions, adoption, regulation, and investor positioning.
- Map total exposure across direct holdings and funds, including retirement accounts.
- Identify the assumptions that support each concentrated position, distinguishing current cash-flow evidence from expectations far in the future.
- Check your downside capacity against spending needs and the possibility of a prolonged drawdown.
- Set or revisit allocation limits and decide in advance how you will rebalance if market moves push holdings beyond them.
- Review relevant evidence periodically—adoption, margins, capital spending, financing, and competitive pressure—rather than changing the plan in response to every market headline.
This framework cannot eliminate losses or make a forecast reliable. It can make the portfolio’s risks visible and reduce the chance that a decision about a long-term investment is made under pressure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a market-cap-weighted index automatically reduce the risk of an AI selloff?
It spreads ownership across the index’s constituents, but it does not give every company equal influence. If a few large holdings account for much of the index, their declines can still have a substantial effect on the fund.
Recommended Free Tools
Can an AI-focused company be a good business but a poor investment?
Yes. Business success and investment return are different: the return also depends on the price paid and the results investors expected. A company can grow while its shares underperform if its results do not meet expectations already reflected in the price.
Does broad US business adoption data show which AI companies will profit?
No. Adoption measures describe use or plans to use AI across businesses, not which providers will win contracts or retain attractive margins. Company-level revenue, cash flow, costs, and competition are needed to assess that question.
Should I change my retirement contributions after an AI-led market decline?
That depends on your time horizon, account rules, cash needs, and existing allocation. Before changing contributions, check whether the decline has materially changed your intended portfolio mix or whether a change would instead be a reaction to short-term volatility.
