There is no single set of effects or prerequisites for a “SharePoint code injection flaw”: the specific vulnerability and deployment determine what an attacker can do. Microsoft’s historical bulletins distinguish page-content remote code execution from cross-site scripting (XSS), while its July 2025 report covers a separate wave of attacks against vulnerable, internet-facing on-premises servers. The examples below are not interchangeable, and Microsoft said the 2025 vulnerabilities it discussed did not affect SharePoint Online.
What could a SharePoint flaw expose?
The consequences range from unauthorized access to site content, through actions performed as a logged-on user, to code execution on the server. These outcomes come from different vulnerabilities; the term “injection” alone does not establish which one applies.

What attackers need depends on the vulnerability
For CVE-2013-5059
Microsoft said an attacker needed to authenticate to the target SharePoint site. That condition offered no protection where the site was configured to allow anonymous access. The possible code execution was in the W3WP service-account context, not a blanket promise of unrestricted control over every server.
For CVE-2013-3179 and CVE-2013-3180
Microsoft described an authenticated attacker sending a specially crafted request. The resulting XSS could affect the logged-on user’s browser and identity; these bulletin findings should not be mistaken for the server-side code execution described for CVE-2013-5059.

For the 2025 on-premises campaign
Microsoft described attacks against vulnerable, internet-facing on-premises servers and observed reconnaissance and attempted exploitation through POST requests to the ToolPane endpoint. Its report identifies CVE-2025-49706 as a spoofing vulnerability and CVE-2025-49704 as a remote-code-execution vulnerability. The report’s scope is not all SharePoint products or all injection flaws.
Why MachineKey exposure matters
Microsoft reported that actors who successfully exploited authentication-bypass and remote-code-execution vulnerabilities deployed web shells. One observed script, named spinstall0.aspx (with similar name variants), retrieved MachineKey data and returned it in a GET request. This shows that sensitive server key material can be at risk after compromise; it is an observed post-exploitation behavior, not an inevitable result of every SharePoint flaw or attack. If a server may have been compromised, treat the incident as more than a patching task and use your organization’s incident-response process to assess it.

How administrators can reduce risk
Keep on-premises SharePoint supported and updated
Microsoft recommends supported on-premises SharePoint versions with the latest security updates. Verify the affected product and applicable updates against current Microsoft guidance; the historical 2013 examples and the 2025 campaign have different vulnerability details.
Enable and configure malware protection
For on-premises deployments, Microsoft recommends enabling AMSI with Microsoft Defender Antivirus or equivalent protection, and configuring AMSI in Full Mode. Consult Microsoft’s current instructions for the exact configuration supported by your SharePoint version.

Restrict exposure and monitor servers
CISA advises monitoring affected servers, blocking external access to SharePoint Central Administration, and restricting farm and database communications to systems that need them. Its guidance points administrators to Microsoft’s SharePoint Server hardening recommendations for role-specific ports, services, and Web.config settings. Check the current vendor guidance before changing network or server configuration: requirements can vary by role and change over time. [CISA SharePoint hardening alert]
