It is required for each motorized vehicle entering a park, regardless of how many people ride in it. For an overnight stay, you need the vehicle permit plus a separate Camping Permit; campsite reservations and fees do not replace either authorization.
What does a Kansas State Park Vehicle Permit cover?
A valid State Park Vehicle Permit allows the vehicle to enter Kansas state parks. KDWP requires a permit for each motorized vehicle entering a state park; it is not a per-person pass. Motor vehicles must stay on maintained roads and in parking areas unless signs say otherwise. See KDWP park regulations.
Annual vehicle permit
The regular annual permit covers unlimited vehicle entry to all Kansas State Parks during the calendar year in which it is purchased. It is the statewide option for repeat visits.
Daily vehicle permit
A daily permit covers one day at the specific park where it is purchased. It is not a statewide pass for multiple parks or days, and KDWP says it is available from that park’s office.

Kansas State Parks Passport
The Passport is purchased through the Kansas vehicle registration or renewal process, including the registration channels KDWP lists. It stays tied to that vehicle, covers park vehicle entry until the registration expires, and cannot be transferred to another vehicle.
Reduced-rate permits and special vehicles
KDWP lists reduced annual and daily rates for eligible residents who meet its plate or placard conditions. The Passport has no senior or disability discount; check the KDWP fee page for current eligibility and details. KDWP also lists a special permit for UTVs and golf carts. Their use is restricted to improved roads and parking areas, so check with the park office about local instructions.

Does a Kansas state park vehicle permit cover camping?
No. KDWP requires a separate Camping Permit for every overnight stay in addition to the vehicle permit. A campsite reservation and its associated fees cover the campsite, not vehicle entry; KDWP states that “Vehicle permits are sold separately.” Review KDWP reservation guidance and the fee page before booking.
Charges the vehicle permit does not include
- Camping authorization and campsite charges: The Camping Permit and campsite reservation are separate from vehicle entry.
- Utilities: Hookup fees cover utilities only, not required camping fees.
- Prime sites: Designated prime sites may have an additional daily charge.
- Cabins: Cabin rentals have separate, variable prices; the vehicle permit is not described as covering lodging.

These are the amounts on KDWP’s 2026 fee schedule as of October 4, 2026; confirm the live page before purchasing because rates may change. KDWP’s August 28, 2026 announcement says the November 1 changes also eliminate the annual camping permit. That change does not make vehicle entry and overnight camping the same authorization.
How to choose the right permit
- One visit to one park: A daily permit covers that day at the park where purchased.
- Visits to multiple parks or repeat visits in the calendar year: The regular annual permit provides statewide entry for that calendar year.
- Registering or renewing a Kansas vehicle: Consider the Passport if you want coverage tied to that vehicle through its registration expiration.
- Staying overnight: Arrange the required Camping Permit and campsite separately from vehicle entry.
- Eligible for a reduced rate, or bringing a UTV or golf cart: Verify the applicable terms with KDWP or the park office.
Important exceptions and permit details
Replacing a windshield
If a windshield is replaced, KDWP says a duplicate permit can be purchased at a State Park office for $2.50. A Passport cannot be moved to another vehicle.
