A cyberattack on a game studio can disrupt development networks, customer-support tools, live services, or the servers that hold online progression. It does not automatically mean that every player password was stolen or that local save files were erased. The reliable answer is incident-specific: start with what the publisher has confirmed, note whether the statement is provisional, and then match your response to the affected system.
Recent incidents show why that distinction matters. Ubisoft reported service disruption in March 2022 but said it had no evidence at that time that player personal information had been accessed. In January 2026, its Rainbow Six Siege team said affected inventories had been restored and that there was no indication at that stage that player data or source code had been compromised. Other cases involved stolen development material, a compromised support vendor, or a disrupted build environment rather than a universal player-database breach.
What can a game-studio cyberattack actually affect?
The word “hack” describes an intrusion, not its complete scope. A studio may run separate identity, customer-support, development, build, payment, analytics, and live-game systems. Attackers can reach one system without reaching the others, so the practical impact depends on which environment was accessed and what permissions it had.
- Development files: source code, internal tools, unreleased builds, design documents, or recorded footage can be copied. Take-Two said material from Rockstar’s development environment was downloaded in 2022.
- Support platforms: a vendor account used by a publisher’s support operation can be abused to contact players. Take-Two separately described a compromised 2K support-vendor platform that was used to send a malicious link to certain customers.
- Live-game services: authentication, matchmaking, inventories, marketplaces, or other online functions can be taken offline or placed in a restricted mode while systems are secured.
- Build and release systems: an attack can interrupt the tools that compile, sign, and distribute updates even when player information is not exposed.
- Data stores: databases may contain account details, support tickets, purchase records, or game-state information. Access to one database does not prove access to every database.
- Backups: attackers may encrypt or delete backups, reducing the operator’s ability to restore services. A player’s personal backup cannot repair a publisher’s server-side records.
A service outage is therefore evidence of an availability problem, not proof of data theft. Conversely, a stolen development build may be serious for the studio while having no direct effect on a player’s password or save.

Were player accounts hacked?
Only the operator’s incident statement can establish whether player accounts or personal information were accessed. A studio breach, by itself, is not proof that every account was compromised.
After disruption to some games and services in March 2022, Ubisoft said it had no evidence at that time that player personal information had been accessed or exposed. The qualification “at that time” matters: it described the evidence then available for that incident, not a permanent guarantee about every later event.
Ubisoft’s Siege team used similarly careful language in a January 2026 update, saying there was no indication at that stage that player personal data or source code had been compromised. The team also announced that affected player inventories had been restored and temporarily closed its Marketplace while protections were improved. That notice does not establish that local console or PC saves were involved, nor does it establish how long the Marketplace would remain closed after the notice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTake-Two’s descriptions of its 2022 incidents illustrate a different account-risk path. The Rockstar event concerned downloaded development material. Separately, a compromised platform used by a 2K support vendor enabled a malicious link to be sent to certain players. Those facts do not establish that all Rockstar or 2K passwords were stolen, or that the two events were one leak of every customer credential.
Account risk can also arise through phishing after an incident. Attackers may send convincing “security reset” messages that lead to a look-alike login page. A message mentioning a real outage is not proof that its link is genuine; open the game or publisher’s known website directly and navigate to account security from there.

Are game saves safe after a studio cyberattack?
“Save” can mean a file on a device or a record held by the publisher. The recovery options are completely different, so identify where the progress lives before trying to restore anything.
Local PC and console saves
A local save is stored on a PC drive or console storage and may be copied if the game and platform permit it. A separate copy protects against device failure, accidental deletion, or a bad update, but it cannot recreate an online inventory that never existed on the player’s device.
For PC games with supported cloud-saving behavior, Ubisoft’s documented restore process begins with a backup copy of the game’s save folder. The exact folder and conflict prompt vary by title, so confirm the game’s instructions before replacing files. On the next launch, the game may ask whether to use the restored local save or the cloud version; choosing the wrong copy can overwrite the progress a player intended to keep. An external SSD or flash drive is simply storage for that separate copy, not a repair for publisher infrastructure.
PS5 saved data and USB backup
PlayStation documents a full-console backup to a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB device. The path is Settings → System → System Software → Back Up and Restore → Back Up Your PS5. This is a console backup procedure, not a promise that every PS5 game allows an individual save file to be exported and edited.
The backup is associated with the PlayStation account under Sony’s documented conditions. Restoring it erases current data on the console, so copy or synchronize anything newer before starting. A USB extended-storage drive is formatted for a different purpose and cannot serve as the documented backup device. Follow the current instructions at PlayStation Support before formatting a drive.

Publisher-held online progression
Cross-progression, purchased currency, ranks, cosmetics, and other account-linked records normally live on the publisher’s servers. Rainbow Six Siege is an example: Ubisoft says cross-progression is saved to the Ubisoft account rather than the platform account. A USB drive therefore cannot rebuild missing Siege inventory. If online items look wrong, capture screenshots, transaction confirmations, player IDs, and the time the discrepancy appeared, then use the game’s official support process.

Ubisoft’s January 2026 statement that “Following the recent cyberattack, player inventories were restored” is evidence of an operator-side recovery for that incident. It is not a general promise that every online game can restore every lost item.
Will a cyberattack delay the next patch?
It can, when release engineering or build infrastructure is disrupted, but no outsider can infer a delay from an outage alone. Riot Games said in January 2023, in a statement quoted by BleepingComputer, “We expect this to impact our upcoming patch cadence across multiple games.” The statement concerned a disrupted build environment and was reported alongside Riot’s confidence that player personal information had not been compromised.
Patch timing depends on whether developers can safely rebuild, test, sign, and distribute an update. A publisher may keep a game online while postponing a patch, or take services offline to validate files. A delay at one studio does not predict a delay at another, and a ransom demand or leaked code does not reveal the schedule for a specific update unless the operator publishes one.
What should I do if a game company reports an attack?
Use the confirmed scope to decide what action is proportionate. The following sequence protects the player account without pretending that a personal device can fix a studio network.

- Read the official notice. Open the publisher, game, or platform website directly. Record the incident date, affected services, and whether the statement says exposure is confirmed, under investigation, or not indicated at that stage.
- Check the account through a known route. Review recent sign-ins, linked accounts, email addresses, security settings, purchases, and inventory. Do not use a reset link delivered in an unexpected email or direct message.
- Change a reused password. Set a unique password for the affected account and for any other service where the old password was reused. If the publisher says credentials were not exposed, changing a reused password is still sensible because phishing and credential-stuffing attempts can follow public incidents.
- Enable two-step verification. Use the publisher’s supported authenticator, security-key, or other second-factor option. Save recovery codes in a secure place that is separate from the game device.
- Contact official support for anomalies. Report unrecognized purchases, altered email addresses, missing inventory, or a locked account through the service’s support portal. Include dates, receipts, platform IDs, and screenshots, but never send a password or one-time code.
- Preserve eligible local saves. If the title stores saves locally, make a separate copy using the game’s documented method. Do not replace a cloud save or restore a full console backup until you understand which version is newer.
- Watch for follow-up notices. “No indication at this stage” and “under investigation” can change as forensic work continues. Use later official updates to decide whether another action is needed.
These steps reduce personal exposure; they do not restore a publisher’s servers, reverse a marketplace rollback, or recover a save for which no backup exists. Account-protection guidance from Rockstar Games also recommends unique credentials and additional account security in its account-protection practices.
Can lost progress be recovered?
Recovery depends on the storage layer and on whether the operator or player has a usable backup. A local save may be recoverable from a copied folder, a console backup, or an eligible cloud-save version. An online inventory requires the publisher to restore a server-side backup or manually correct the account.
Do not treat every missing-save report as evidence of an attack. An Insomniac Games Support article about missing saves describes a game bug addressed in update 1.002.000. It recommends checking an in-game backup save and, for eligible subscribers, PlayStation Plus cloud saves, while warning, “Unfortunately, we cannot recover data once it’s lost.” That page is not evidence that a cybersecurity incident erased Spider-Man saves; it describes a separate software problem.
There is no verified cross-industry percentage for player accounts affected by studio attacks, no standard restoration time, and no universal probability of save loss. The useful questions are narrower: which system was accessed, what exposure has been confirmed, where the progression is stored, and what recovery has the operator actually announced?

Look for scope, timing, and system names rather than headlines. “No evidence at this time” reports the current investigative position. “No indication at this stage” is similarly provisional. “Inventories restored” describes a recovery action, while “build environment disrupted” describes a release-system problem; neither phrase automatically answers the account-password question.

Also check whether the notice names a vendor. A support-provider compromise can expose a communication channel without exposing the game database. Conversely, a development-system intrusion can leak proprietary code without touching player records. Keeping those systems separate prevents both unnecessary panic and false reassurance.
What is the practical bottom line for players?
A game-studio cyberattack can affect confidentiality, availability, or integrity in different places: development files may leak, support tools may send phishing messages, live services may go offline, build systems may slow patches, and online inventories may require operator-side restoration. None of those outcomes alone proves that a player password was stolen or a local save was deleted.
Read the dated official notice, secure the account through a known login path, preserve local saves where the platform permits, and treat online progression as dependent on the publisher’s backups. That approach follows the evidence for the specific incident instead of assuming that every outage is a database breach.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know whether an incident notice is final or preliminary?
Look for time qualifiers such as “at this time,” “at this stage,” or “under investigation,” and check whether a later update changes the scope. A final statement should identify the affected system and the data categories confirmed, not merely say that services were unavailable.
Does changing my console password also change my publisher account password?
Usually not. A console-network credential and a separately registered publisher account can remain independent even when they are linked for sign-in, so review both accounts and their linked-email settings.
Can cloud-save history restore an older version after a bad sync?
Only if the platform or game retains an earlier version and exposes a restore option. Stop launching the game if possible, avoid overwriting the newer cloud copy, and ask official support which version can be recovered before deleting files.
What evidence should I keep when reporting missing items?
Save purchase receipts, transaction IDs, screenshots of the inventory before and after the change, your platform and publisher IDs, and the approximate time the issue began. These details let support distinguish an account change from a wider service rollback.
