A Dell factory reset can erase everything on the computer’s drive—or, with Windows 11’s separate Keep my files option, preserve personal files while removing apps and resetting settings. The result depends on which reset tool and option you choose. Before proceeding, identify the reset screen you are using and back up important files.

First, identify which reset you mean

“Factory reset” is often used loosely for two different processes: Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery’s Reset to factory settings and Windows 11’s Reset this PC. SupportAssist restores the operating system and software to the factory state; Windows’ reset choices have different effects on personal files. Dell says its Windows 11 Reset this PC route is not a Dell factory-image reset.

Dell recommends backing up data before a refresh or reset. Its SupportAssist factory-reset flow warns that system data and personal files will be deleted. Do not start until you have copied anything you need to keep somewhere outside the computer.

What each Dell reset option deletes and keeps

Reset option Personal files Apps, drivers and settings What to expect
SupportAssist OS Recovery: Reset to factory settings Deleted. Dell warns that all data on the hard drive, including personal files, is permanently deleted. User-installed programs and drivers are uninstalled. Restores the OS and software to the state they were in when the computer shipped. Availability depends on the model and system condition.
Windows 11 Reset this PC: Keep my files Kept. User-installed apps and drivers are removed, and settings are reset. Manufacturer-preinstalled apps may be restored depending on the Preinstalled apps setting. This is not a Dell factory-image reset.
Windows 11 Reset this PC: Remove everything Deleted. Installed apps and drivers and settings changes are removed. Dell says its Windows reinstall removes Dell-installed apps, subject to some tablet exceptions and configurations. Choose Just remove my files if you are keeping the PC. Dell gives Remove files and clean the drive as the option for recycling.
SupportAssist OS Recovery: Reset and update Deleted; use the separate backup step if you need files later. User-installed programs and drivers are removed. Installs the latest OS and critical drivers and apps available through that route rather than returning to the exact shipped software image. It is available only on some supported systems.

For instructions on Windows 11’s choices, see Dell’s Windows 11 reset guide. For the SupportAssist reset options and warnings, consult the SupportAssist OS Recovery User’s Guide.

What SupportAssist factory reset does not keep

A factory-state reset restores the shipped software baseline; it does not preserve local documents, photos, downloads or other personal data. Dell describes the process as permanently deleting hard-drive data and uninstalling programs or drivers installed by the user. Software that did not ship with the computer will need to be installed again. Some licensed software, including Microsoft Office 365, may ask for a product or license key after the reset.

SupportAssist provides a separate backup flow before the reset. Select the files and folders you need, copy them to a USB flash drive or external drive with available space greater than the selected backup size, then restore the backup after the reset. Dell’s SupportAssist OS Recovery repair and restore instructions describe the backup and restore steps.

What Windows 11 “Keep my files” keeps

Keep my files preserves personal files, not your complete installed setup. Windows removes apps and drivers you installed and resets settings. Whether manufacturer-preinstalled apps are restored depends on the Preinstalled apps setting described in Dell’s Windows 11 instructions.

If you choose Remove everything, personal files are removed. The separate Remove files and clean the drive choice is Dell’s suggested option when recycling the computer. Dell’s guidance does not establish a forensic-erasure guarantee, so do not treat that label as proof that data cannot be recovered by every means.

Back up and prepare before resetting

  1. Check the exact reset tool and option. Read the wording on screen: SupportAssist Reset to factory settings, SupportAssist Reset and update, and Windows Reset this PC do not have identical effects.
  2. Copy important files off the PC. Dell recommends a backup before either a refresh or reset. For SupportAssist’s backup step, use a USB or external drive with available space exceeding the selected backup’s size.
  3. Make a list of software to reinstall. Note apps, drivers and any license or product keys you may need; user-installed software is removed by SupportAssist factory reset and Windows reset options.
  4. Confirm your Dell model supports the recovery route. SupportAssist OS Recovery is not supported on Dell computers with Qualcomm processors. On some systems or in certain recovery conditions, only Reset and update may appear rather than the factory-settings option.
