Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If you control the recording, use lossless audio for voice AI: FLAC is a good default when file size matters, while WAV containing PCM/LINEAR16 is a familiar uncompressed option. MP3 may work when a service accepts it, but it is lossy. Before uploading, check the specific product, endpoint, and batch or streaming mode—format support and encoding requirements vary.
How WAV, MP3, and FLAC differ
These names do not describe the same kind of thing. WAV is a container; FLAC and MP3 describe audio encoding. A filename ending in .wav does not by itself tell a transcription service what encoding is inside.
| Format | What it is | Information retained | Practical implication for voice AI |
|---|---|---|---|
| WAV | A container that can hold different encodings. Speech workflows commonly use PCM/LINEAR16; Google also documents WAV containing MULAW. | Depends on the encoding inside the container. PCM/LINEAR16 is lossless. | Confirm the actual encoding and ensure it matches the service’s declared configuration. Google Cloud’s encoding guide describes supported WAV encodings. |
| FLAC | A lossless codec and file format. | Retains the source information while compressing it. | Useful when you want lossless input with less transmission or storage burden than uncompressed LINEAR16. |
| MP3 | A lossy audio format. | Discards audio information during encoding; that information is not restored by later conversion. | Use only when the target service accepts MP3. Recognition may be affected, but the amount cannot be stated as a universal accuracy penalty. |
Google Cloud recommends a lossless source encoding when you have a choice, naming FLAC and LINEAR16 for better speech recognition. Its RecognitionConfig documentation says FLAC requires about half the bandwidth of LINEAR16. That is a relative bandwidth figure, not a guarantee that every FLAC recording will be exactly half the size of its PCM counterpart.
Which format should you choose?
| Your situation | Starting choice | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| You are making a new recording and want to preserve input quality | FLAC or WAV containing PCM/LINEAR16 | Confirm the service’s accepted encoding, sample rate, bit depth, channel count, and endpoint requirements. |
| File size or transmission bandwidth is a concern | FLAC | Its compression is lossless; actual file size varies with the recording. |
| Your source is already MP3 | Upload it only if the service accepts MP3; otherwise transcode from the best available source | Converting MP3 to WAV does not recover the audio discarded when the MP3 was made. |
| The API requires WAV/PCM or a raw stream | Use the exact container and encoding it specifies | Check the encoding itself, not just the extension, and make the configuration agree with the audio. |
| The audio is telephone speech or has a native lower sample rate | Preserve the native characteristics unless the service directs otherwise | Do not resample blindly; follow the product’s requirements and preserve the source’s native rate when appropriate. |
Is WAV or FLAC better for AI transcription?
Neither is inherently better based on its filename. For a WAV file, what matters is the encoding inside it; PCM/LINEAR16 is a lossless choice. FLAC is also lossless and can reduce the bandwidth needed compared with LINEAR16. Choose the one the specific transcription interface accepts and configure its sample rate and other audio properties correctly.

Google Cloud recommends 16,000 Hz or higher when possible, but also cautions against unnecessary resampling and notes that telephony audio may natively use 8,000 Hz. The useful rule is to match the source and the service, rather than upsampling simply to reach a larger number. See Google Cloud Speech-to-Text best practices.
Can you upload MP3 to voice AI?
Sometimes. Compatibility depends on the service, model, endpoint, and whether you are using file-based batch recognition or streaming. Gemini’s audio-understanding documentation lists WAV, MP3, and FLAC among supported MIME types, but that does not establish support across all voice AI products. Gemini API audio documentation describes that interface’s support.

Amazon Transcribe’s documented recommendations also distinguish between modes: for batch, it recommends FLAC or WAV with PCM 16-bit; for streaming, FLAC or signed 16-bit little-endian PCM. Check the documentation for your selected language and mode in Amazon Transcribe data input and output.
Does converting MP3 to WAV improve transcription?
No conversion can restore information that MP3 encoding discarded. Decoding an MP3 and saving the result as WAV changes the container and encoding, but it does not turn the source into a lossless recording. If an endpoint requires WAV, conversion may make the file compatible; it should not be treated as a way to improve the original audio. When possible, use the original recording or another least-lossy source available.

Check these settings before sending audio
- Identify the exact interface. Check the selected provider, model, endpoint, and whether the request is batch, streaming, or inline audio. File-format support is not universal.
- Verify the container and encoding. Confirm the actual codec inside WAV, or the MIME type and encoding expected by the API. Ensure any declared configuration matches the file.
- Match audio properties to the source. Check sample rate, bit depth, and channel count against the endpoint requirements. Avoid resampling unless needed.
- Account for request limits. For the documented Firebase AI Logic inline-audio workflow, the total request size limit is 20 MB, and base64 encoding increases inline payload size. This limit applies to that workflow, not universally to Gemini or other providers. See Firebase AI Logic’s audio-file guidance.
What accuracy claims can you rely on?
The cited provider documentation supports preferring lossless input when you control the source, but it does not establish a universal word-error-rate difference among WAV, FLAC, and MP3. There is no basis here for a fixed percentage improvement or for saying that MP3 always causes a particular transcription error rate. Recording quality, noise, encoding, language, and service settings all matter; use the provider’s requirements and test with your own representative audio if the result is consequential.
