WatchGuard FireCloud can replace a conventional VPN for many remote-access designs, but it is not a universal VPN substitute. Its Internet Access edition delivers cloud firewall and secure-web-gateway controls for roaming users. Total Access adds zero-trust, application-level access to private company resources through a FireCloud gateway, so users do not receive a broad route into the whole network. That distinction matters: FireCloud is most compelling when you need identity-aware web inspection and tightly scoped access to internal applications, while a traditional VPN may remain simpler for legacy systems that require unrestricted network-layer connectivity.
This review explains what each edition does, how deployment works, what hardware and identity services are required, how pricing is presented, and where the practical limitations appeared in an independent 2026 hands-on review.
What is WatchGuard FireCloud?
WatchGuard FireCloud is a managed, cloud-based firewall-as-a-service (FWaaS) platform. User traffic is sent to WatchGuard cloud points of presence (PoPs), where policy and security services are applied before traffic reaches the public internet or, with Total Access, an approved private application.

The service combines several functions that are often purchased separately: secure web gateway (SWG) filtering, firewall policy, malware and intrusion protections, and zero-trust network access (ZTNA) to private resources. WatchGuard’s 25 September 2025 announcement described Total Access as unifying SWG, FWaaS, ZTNA and identity in one cloud-managed platform. That is a vendor description, not an independent performance test.

Is FireCloud better than a conventional VPN?
FireCloud is better when your priority is least-privilege, application-level access and centrally managed web security. A conventional VPN is often better when users must reach many network-layer services with minimal application onboarding. The right choice depends on whether you want to publish specific applications or extend a network segment.
| Decision factor | FireCloud | Conventional VPN |
|---|---|---|
| Access scope | Total Access can expose named private applications using IP addresses, port ranges and an FQDN. Users are not given a general route to every subnet. | Usually provides a network tunnel to one or more subnets; scope depends on routes, firewall rules and client configuration. |
| Internet protection | Internet Access and Total Access apply cloud firewall and secure-web controls, including web and application filtering. | May send traffic through a corporate gateway, but inspection depth depends on the VPN and separate security stack. |
| Identity and posture | Connection policies can use an identity provider and device-related checks. WatchGuard says it verifies identity and device posture for every session and permits only approved applications. | Commonly authenticates a user at tunnel establishment; device posture and per-application policy may require additional products. |
| Exposure of internal apps | WatchGuard says Total Access hides internal applications from the internet and exposes them only to authorized users. | VPN endpoints and reachable network ranges remain part of the remote-access design and must be hardened separately. |
| Gateway requirement | Internet Access does not require an on-premises gateway for internet-only protection. Total Access requires a FireCloud gateway for private resources. | Requires a VPN concentrator, firewall feature or hosted VPN endpoint. |
| Endpoint software | Requires the WatchGuard Connection Manager agent. | Requires a VPN client or operating-system VPN profile. |
| Operations | Policies, users and cloud service settings are managed in WatchGuard Cloud; traffic is routed to a nearby PoP by the agent. | Administrators manage concentrators, routing, certificates, client profiles and capacity. |
| Pricing model | Per-user licensing with volume bands; final terms vary by region and reseller. | May be appliance, subscription or user licensed, often with separate security and support costs. |
FireCloud therefore changes the security model rather than merely moving a VPN into the cloud. It can reduce lateral movement and simplify policy for web and private-app access, but applications that depend on broadcast discovery, arbitrary inbound connections or broad network protocols may still need a conventional network path.

What is the difference between FireCloud Internet Access and Total Access?
Internet Access is the internet-protection edition. Total Access includes those controls and adds application-level access to private company resources without requiring a full-network VPN tunnel.
| Capability | Internet Access | Total Access |
|---|---|---|
| Firewall as a service | Included | Included |
| Secure web gateway | Included | Included |
| Web, application and geolocation policy | Included through access rules | Included through access rules |
| Private on-premises or hosted application access | Not provided | Included through a FireCloud gateway |
| VPN-free, app-level access | No | Yes, for resources configured in the gateway |
| On-premises gateway hardware or virtual machine | Not needed for internet-only use | Required for private resources |
| Best fit | Remote and mobile users who need protected internet access | Hybrid workforces that need protected internet access plus controlled access to internal applications |
Choosing Total Access does not automatically publish every internal service. An administrator must define each private resource, its address, allowed ports and client-facing FQDN, then bind access to users and rules. That deliberate configuration is the feature: access is granted to an application rather than to an entire network.
How does FireCloud work for a remote user?
The Connection Manager agent establishes the user session and routes traffic through the nearest available FireCloud PoP. Policy is evaluated in WatchGuard Cloud, where identity, access rules and security services determine whether a connection proceeds.

- Endpoint connection: Connection Manager starts the protected session on the user’s computer.
- PoP selection: The agent sends traffic to a nearby FireCloud PoP; the 2026 IT Pro review reported that the agent selected the nearest PoP.
- Policy evaluation: Access rules determine whether the connection is allowed, which destination is reachable and which security services apply.
- Inspection and filtering: Enabled services inspect traffic for malware, exploits, prohibited applications, undesirable web content and location-based restrictions.
- Application delivery: With Total Access, an approved request is forwarded through the gateway to the defined private resource. Other destinations remain unavailable.
The result is a session-centric policy model. A user can be allowed to reach one web application or database port while remaining unable to scan or connect to unrelated hosts on the same internal network.
Which security controls and policy options are available?
FireCloud access rules are the central control point. A rule decides when a connection is allowed or denied, which destination is in scope and which protections are applied. WatchGuard’s documented services include:
- Gateway AntiVirus: Scans supported traffic for known malicious files.
- APT Blocker: Adds protection against advanced and evasive threats.
- Botnet Detection: Helps identify communication with known botnet infrastructure.
- Intrusion Prevention Service (IPS): Detects and blocks exploit patterns.
- Geolocation: Allows or denies traffic based on geographic origin or destination rules.
- WebBlocker: Filters websites by category.
- Application Control: Uses signatures to identify and block applications and protocols.
In the IT Pro hands-on review, the service presented 166 URL categories and 1,275 predefined application/protocol signatures. Those are review-time figures and can change as WatchGuard updates the service. Application Control settings are applied through access rules, so creating a signature list alone does not change user behavior until the relevant rule is enabled and ordered correctly.
How do I deploy FireCloud Internet Access?
Internet-only deployment is the simpler path because it does not require a gateway inside the company network. Plan identity, licensing and endpoint rollout before installing the agent.
- Prepare the tenant: Create or use a WatchGuard account and open WatchGuard Cloud. Licences can be activated in the account or obtained through a WatchGuard Service Provider.
- Select an identity source: Configure WatchGuard Cloud Directory, AuthPoint or a SAML 2.0 provider. Confirm that the claims and groups needed for policy assignment are available.
- Assign licences: Allocate the required user licences. The licence count controls how many users the service can support.
- Create access rules: Set default allow or deny behavior, then add web, application, geolocation and security-service conditions. Put more specific rules ahead of broad rules.
- Install Connection Manager: Distribute the endpoint agent to a pilot group first. Have users sign in and verify that the client reports a healthy, licensed connection.
- Test representative traffic: Check ordinary web browsing, blocked categories, approved applications and denied applications from at least one device in each operating-system group you support.
- Roll out in stages: Expand to additional users after confirming authentication, policy logging and help-desk procedures.
Keep a break-glass administrative account outside normal policy changes, and document how to disable or remove the endpoint agent if a policy mistake interrupts business-critical access.

- Choose the gateway location: Place a supported Firebox, Windows Server or virtual gateway where it can route to the private applications and reach the FireCloud service.
- Register and license the gateway: Add it to the WatchGuard Cloud tenant and confirm that the Total Access entitlement is active.
- Define each private resource: Enter the application’s IP address, permitted port range and the FQDN that clients will use. Avoid publishing a broad subnet when only one service is required.
- Build identity-based rules: Associate resources with user groups, identity conditions and any device or location requirements. Deny access by default for resources that are not explicitly assigned.
- Install Connection Manager: Deploy the agent to the users who need private applications and complete identity-provider sign-in.
- Validate from an external network: Test the application from a home or mobile connection, not only from the office LAN. Confirm that the intended port works and that unrelated internal addresses do not.
- Monitor and refine: Review connection events, tighten port ranges and remove stale users or resources as applications change.
This setup is a replacement for broad VPN access only when the applications work with the published protocol and addressing model. Legacy systems that require unrestricted east-west traffic, local network discovery or many dynamic ports may need redesign or a separate network-access method.
What hardware and infrastructure does FireCloud require?
The answer depends on the edition and where your applications live.
| Use case | Required components | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Internet Access for roaming users | WatchGuard Cloud tenant, user licences, identity provider and Connection Manager endpoints | No private-resource gateway is required. Ensure endpoints can install and run the agent. |
| Total Access to on-premises resources | All Internet Access components plus a FireCloud gateway | Use a Firebox such as the T185 used in the IT Pro review, or a supported server/virtual deployment. |
| Total Access to a virtualized environment | Gateway hosted on Hyper-V, VMware or Proxmox, with network reachability to the applications | Reserve compute, storage, outbound connectivity and a maintenance process for the host. |
| Multiple offices or data centers | Gateway placement appropriate to each private-resource location | Design routing and failover; the cloud service does not remove the need for local network availability. |
Users also need a supported operating environment capable of running Connection Manager, reliable internet connectivity and an identity account. The available data does not establish a complete operating-system matrix, so verify current endpoint support before a large rollout.
How much does FireCloud cost per user?
IT Pro reported introductory pricing of about £70 per licence per year for Internet Access and about £108 per licence per year for Total Access for up to 50 licences. Those figures exclude VAT and were reported in the reviewer’s 2026 pricing context; they are not a universal global price list.
| Edition | Reported price | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Internet Access | About £70 per user per year | IT Pro figure; up to 50 licences; excludes VAT; regional and volume terms may differ. |
| Total Access | About £108 per user per year | IT Pro figure; up to 50 licences; excludes VAT; regional and volume terms may differ. |
| Higher volumes | Lower per-user pricing was reported | Discount level was not stated; obtain a quote for your user band. |
A reseller listing referenced one-year and three-year terms, but the final amount depends on region, user band, term and whether you buy through a Service Provider. Treat the figures above as budgeting guidance rather than a guaranteed checkout price. The licence count controls user capacity, so include contractors and occasional users in the sizing exercise.
Can I trial FireCloud before buying?
WatchGuard’s documentation describes a 30-day trial that can be renewed to a maximum of 60 days. Confirm current eligibility and renewal mechanics in your WatchGuard account because trial availability can depend on the account route and licensing channel.

IT Pro reviewer Dave Mitchell published a hands-on review on 14 August 2026. He characterized FireCloud as a combination of FWaaS, SWG and ZTNA and listed endpoint anti-malware, advanced threat protection, IPS, web and application filtering, geolocation controls and private-resource access among the capabilities.
The review’s reasons to buy were volume discounts, integrated FWaaS/SWG/ZTNA, easy deployment, unified cloud management and a distributed PoP network. It reported 15 PoPs at the time of testing; that count is time-sensitive and should not be treated as a permanent specification.
The main reason to wait was an endpoint compatibility issue for organizations already running WatchGuard EPDR. FireCloud and EPDR used the same agent installer, which caused FireCloud clients to appear as unlicensed endpoints in the EPDR console. IT Pro reported that WatchGuard knew about the issue and was developing separate installers for FireCloud v2. This is a dated review observation, not proof that the limitation remains in every current release.
The review used WatchGuard Cloud Directory but noted that AuthPoint and third-party SAML providers, including Microsoft Entra ID and Okta, were available. It also observed that Connection Manager routed traffic through the nearest PoP.
What are FireCloud’s main strengths and limitations?
Strengths
- Combines cloud firewall, secure web gateway and private-application access in one policy console.
- Can reduce the need for broad network tunnels by publishing only approved applications and ports.
- Supports WatchGuard Cloud Directory, AuthPoint and SAML-based identity providers.
- Provides a single endpoint agent for remote users and routes sessions to a nearby PoP.
- Offers volume-based user licensing, which can improve economics for larger deployments.
- Provides built-in controls for malware, advanced threats, IPS, web categories, applications and geolocation.
Limitations and risks
- Total Access still requires a gateway with network reachability to private resources.
- Application-level access may not suit systems that need broad network protocols, discovery or dynamic ports.
- Per-user pricing can become significant when contractors, partners and infrequent users are included.
- PoP counts, feature limits, agent behavior and reseller availability can change.
- Organizations using EPDR should verify current installer compatibility before production deployment.
- The service does not eliminate local network, gateway or application-availability dependencies.
Who should choose FireCloud instead of a VPN?
FireCloud is a strong candidate for a hybrid workforce that needs protected internet access and controlled access to a defined set of internal web applications, portals, databases or services. It is especially useful when security teams want identity-based policy and web inspection without operating separate remote-access, proxy and filtering stacks.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
A conventional VPN may remain the better fit when users need broad access to file shares, management protocols, legacy client-server software or network services that cannot be described as stable application endpoints. You may also keep a VPN for administrators or special workflows while using FireCloud for ordinary workforce access; the two approaches are not mutually exclusive.
How should I troubleshoot a FireCloud rollout?
The user cannot sign in
- Confirm that the user has an assigned licence and belongs to the intended identity group.
- Check SAML claims, clock synchronization and the identity provider’s sign-in logs.
- Verify that Connection Manager is using the current tenant and not an old test account.
Websites are blocked unexpectedly
- Review rule order and the URL category assigned by WebBlocker.
- Check whether Application Control or geolocation conditions also match the request.
- Create a narrow exception for a verified business destination rather than disabling a broad category.
A private application is unreachable
- Confirm that the gateway is online and can reach the application’s IP address.
- Check the configured FQDN, port range and protocol.
- Test from outside the office network to ensure you are exercising the FireCloud path.
- Look for local firewall, DNS or application access-control rules that reject the gateway’s connection.
EPDR reports an unlicensed endpoint
If your organization also runs EPDR, treat the installer collision reported by IT Pro as a possible cause. Check current WatchGuard guidance and use the appropriate separate installer if one is available in your release; do not assume the 2026 review behavior is unchanged.
Is FireCloud worth it?
FireCloud is worth considering when you want to move from network-centric remote access to identity- and application-centric access while keeping web security in the same cloud console. Internet Access is the focused choice for protected browsing; Total Access earns its higher price when employees need private applications and you are prepared to deploy and operate a gateway.

For those conditions, FireCloud can simplify hybrid-work security without granting every remote user a tunnel into the whole network.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does FireCloud work with Microsoft Entra ID and Okta?
Yes. WatchGuard documents third-party SAML identity providers, and the 2026 IT Pro review specifically names Microsoft Entra ID and Okta as available choices. You still need to configure the provider’s SAML application, claims and group assignments in your own tenant.
Do I need a Firebox for every FireCloud user?
No. Internet Access users can receive cloud-based web and firewall protection without an on-premises gateway. A FireCloud gateway is required when Total Access must reach private company resources.
Can FireCloud replace a site-to-site VPN between offices?
The documented design targets user-to-application access, not a blanket office-to-office network tunnel. If an application requires unrestricted routing between entire sites, retain a suitable site-to-site or network-layer design.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How many private applications can I publish with Total Access?
The supplied product information does not state a fixed application count. Capacity and limits can vary by licence, release and gateway design, so confirm the current limit with WatchGuard or your Service Provider before sizing a large catalogue.
Does the nearest PoP guarantee the lowest latency?
The Connection Manager agent was observed routing traffic through the nearest PoP, and IT Pro reported 15 PoPs during its review. Physical proximity does not guarantee end-to-end latency because the destination, internet path and gateway location also affect performance.
