Waste Connections and WM (Waste Management, Inc.) both collect, transfer and dispose of waste, but they emphasize different parts of the business. Waste Connections highlights route density, strategically placed assets and vertical integration, with a strong presence in secondary and rural markets. WM has a broader environmental-services portfolio that includes landfill-gas energy and, following its Stericycle acquisition, healthcare waste and secure information destruction. Their Q2 2026 updates show growth from different sources and report different measures, so they are not a like-for-like performance ranking.
How do Waste Connections and WM make money?
Both companies operate across several links in the waste chain: collecting material from customers, moving it through transfer stations, and sending it to landfills or recovery operations. Owning or controlling multiple links can connect collection routes to disposal and recovery assets, but each company describes a distinct portfolio and strategy in its 2025 Form 10-K.
Waste Connections: collection, disposal and recovery built around local markets
Waste Connections provides non-hazardous waste collection, transfer, disposal and resource recovery, primarily recycling and renewable-fuels generation. It also operates non-hazardous exploration and production (E&P) waste treatment, recovery and disposal services, as well as intermodal services in the Pacific Northwest. Its 2025 Form 10-K describes operations in 46 U.S. states and six Canadian provinces. Waste Connections’ 2025 Form 10-K
The company says it generally targets secondary and rural markets, where exclusive contracts, vertical integration or strategically positioned assets may help it operate efficiently. It also describes route density—serving more customers along routes—as a way to improve collection efficiency. Waste Connections explicitly frames vertical integration as an economic advantage: company-owned landfills can receive waste collected by its own operations, while landfills and transfer stations can also take third-party waste and earn tipping fees.

Growth can come from internal operations, including pricing and increased route density, and from acquisitions in existing, adjacent or new markets. Those sources should be considered separately: price changes, customer or waste volumes, and acquired revenue do not represent the same kind of underlying growth.
WM: waste services plus environmental and healthcare businesses
WM describes itself as a waste and environmental-solutions company. Its portfolio includes landfill-gas-to-energy operations that produce renewable electricity and renewable natural gas; some of that fuel is allocated to its natural-gas fleet. Its 2025 annual report also describes Stericycle’s medical-waste and secure-information-destruction businesses as part of WM’s expanded service platform. WM’s 2025 Form 10-K

These activities broaden WM’s sources of business, but their presence alone does not establish that any one line will grow faster or earn better returns. Integration of acquired operations and investment across the portfolio are part of the execution picture.
What are the main strategic differences?
| Comparison area | Waste Connections | WM |
|---|---|---|
| Portfolio emphasis | Collection, transfer, disposal and resource recovery, plus E&P waste services and Pacific Northwest intermodal operations; described in its 2025 Form 10-K. | Waste and environmental solutions, including landfill-gas energy and the medical-waste and secure-information-destruction businesses added with Stericycle; described in its 2025 Form 10-K and 2025 annual results. |
| Market and asset strategy | Generally targets secondary and rural markets and emphasizes exclusive contracts, route density, vertical integration and strategically placed assets; 2025 Form 10-K. | Operates a broader environmental-services platform; the cited 2025 company materials do not describe the same secondary- and rural-market targeting emphasis. |
| Potential growth sources | Pricing, route density and other internal operations, plus acquisitions; Q2 2026 filing also attributes revenue growth to price increases and acquisitions. | Recycling and renewable-energy project contributions, energy surcharges and acquired businesses; Q2 2026 release also cited lower expected volumes. |
| Key execution questions | Acquisition integration, route and disposal economics, landfill access and capacity, regulation, labor and capital needs, and operating costs. | Acquisition integration, project and portfolio execution, volume trends, energy and recycling conditions, and capital allocation. |
The table describes strategic emphasis, not a complete inventory of either company’s activities. Shared business lines do not mean identical service mix, contract exposure, asset position or financial sensitivity.

What did the companies report for Q2 2026?
The latest company-specific quarterly updates covered the quarter ended June 30, 2026, but the figures below use different measures and reporting periods. Read them as separate snapshots rather than a direct contest.
| Company and period | Reported update | What management attributed or indicated |
|---|---|---|
| Waste Connections, quarter ended June 30, 2026 | Revenue was $2.562 billion, up 6.4% year over year. Company-defined adjusted EBITDA was $840.1 million, up 6.8%, and adjusted EBITDA margin was 32.8%. | The Q2 2026 filing attributed higher revenue to price increases and acquisition contributions. It also reported higher fuel costs and other segment-specific operating-cost pressures. The company announced that it raised its 2026 outlook. Waste Connections’ Q2 2026 Form 10-Q |
| WM, six months ended June 30, 2026 | Operating cash flow was $1.73 billion, compared with $1.55 billion for the first six months of 2025. Free cash flow, a non-GAAP measure, was $1.10 billion, compared with $818 million for the comparable 2025 period. | WM’s July 28, 2026 release set 2026 revenue guidance at $26.275 billion to $26.475 billion. Management cited lower expected volumes, partly offset by higher energy surcharges, and said recycling and renewable-energy project contributions supported revenue growth. WM’s Q2 2026 earnings release |
Waste Connections’ quarterly revenue and adjusted EBITDA are not the same measures as WM’s six-month cash flows or full-year revenue guidance. The companies differ in scale, service mix, period covered and metric definitions; in particular, adjusted EBITDA and free cash flow are company-reported non-GAAP measures. These figures therefore do not establish which company performed better overall.

What drives growth, and what can interrupt it?
Price and volume can move in different directions
Pricing can lift revenue even when the amount of waste collected is not growing at the same rate. Waste Connections identified price increases as a Q2 2026 revenue contributor, while also reporting higher fuel costs. WM’s July 2026 outlook reflected lower volume expectations, partly offset by higher energy surcharges. Revenue growth alone therefore does not show whether volumes, costs or margins are moving in a favorable direction.
Acquisitions add business—and integration work
Waste Connections says acquisitions are part of its growth approach and notes they can affect comparisons between reporting periods. WM’s addition of Stericycle broadened its service platform, making integration and execution relevant to its results. Acquired revenue is distinct from organic growth, and the costs and operational effects of integrating businesses can complicate period-to-period comparisons.

Assets, regulation and operating costs shape returns
Waste Connections describes waste collection and disposal as requiring substantial labor and capital, and identifies competition, operating complexity and regulatory compliance as important industry conditions. Access to disposal capacity matters because landfill locations and closures affect how far waste must travel from collection areas. Fuel, labor and other operating costs can also offset revenue gains.
Recovery and energy businesses have their own sensitivities
Recycling, landfill-gas energy and renewable fuels diversify the service mix, but their contribution can depend on commodity prices, energy conditions, project performance and operating costs. Neither the existence of these businesses nor a period of project contributions establishes that their results will be stable. WM’s 2026 guidance and growth commentary are management expectations, not guaranteed outcomes; actual results may differ as conditions change. Waste Connections’ outlook is also forward-looking and subject to company-stated assumptions and risks.
How should an investor compare the companies?
A useful comparison starts by separating business economics from headline growth rates. For each company, examine the same reporting period and check how the company defines its measures before drawing conclusions. Relevant questions include:
- How much growth came from pricing, volume, acquisitions and new projects, respectively?
- How does the service mix affect exposure to collection routes, disposal assets, recycling, energy or specialized services?
- How well can the company connect collection operations to transfer and disposal capacity, and what constraints affect that network?
- What are the effects of fuel, labor, regulation, commodity conditions and capital requirements on operating results?
- How are acquisitions being integrated, and what do cash flow, capital investment and capital allocation show over time?
- Are reported profitability and cash-flow figures defined consistently enough to compare, or do company-specific non-GAAP definitions require adjustment?
Waste Connections’ filings make vertical integration and targeted local-market positioning especially prominent in its stated model. WM’s filings describe a wider set of environmental and healthcare services. Those are useful distinctions for analyzing each business, not a forecast or a personalized investment recommendation.
