Use the cleaning method allowed by your washer’s exact owner’s manual. A washer tub-cleaner tablet is a straightforward choice when the manual and product label permit it. Household cleaners are not interchangeable: guidance for bleach and vinegar varies by model, and Whirlpool advises against dish soap because excess suds can cause problems. Run the recommended cleaning cycle with the washer empty, then wipe the gasket and dispenser separately.
Are washing machine cleaner tablets safe?
They can be used when the cleaner label and your washer’s manual allow them. Follow both for placement and cycle selection: Whirlpool and LG direct users to put their respective tub-cleaning tablets in the drum, not assume they belong in the detergent drawer. Use the tablet only for the purpose and in the manner stated on its package. For example, affresh’s product instructions say to remove clothing and other items before use and recommend monthly use or as needed. If your machine has no dedicated tub-clean cycle, follow its manual and the cleaner label rather than guessing at a cycle setting.
- Empty the washer.
- Check the washer manual and cleaner package for placement and cycle instructions.
- Run the permitted cleaning cycle without laundry.
- If residue remains, follow the product directions. affresh says to wipe away residual tablet after the cycle; Whirlpool says an additional rinse and spin may clear excess cleanser.
Which household cleaners can you use?
Compatibility depends on the washer model and the product label. The manufacturer guidance below does not establish one household-cleaner recipe that is safe for every machine. Never mix bleach with vinegar or other cleaners.

How often should you clean the washer?
Monthly is a common manufacturer recommendation, not a universal requirement. affresh recommends monthly use or as needed; LG describes monthly tub cleaning; Whirlpool’s public guide says every thirty days or thirty wash cycles. Follow your washer’s manual and clean-cycle indicator if it provides one.

What a tub-clean tablet does not clean
A tub-clean cycle does not replace wiping residue-prone surfaces. Whirlpool advises cleaning the dispenser drawer, door seal, and interior surfaces, then leaving the door or lid open to dry. LG’s maintenance overview also names the drain pump filter, dispenser, inlet filters, and door gaskets. Check your model manual before removing or cleaning parts.
