Briefly, yes—by reported aggregate performance during the COVID-19 surge in March and April 2020. Folding@home said its volunteer network passed 2.4 exaflops and briefly exceeded the combined performance of the world’s top supercomputers. That was a historical peak, not a current performance figure, and the comparison was not a matched benchmark.
What Folding@home reached in 2020
Folding@home is a distributed computing project: volunteers contribute computing capacity that researchers use to simulate protein motion and study molecular behavior relevant to disease. Because many contributors’ computers work across a network, its performance is an aggregate rather than the output of one conventional supercomputer.
The project’s timeline records approximately 1.5 exaflops on March 25, 2020. Folding@home later reported that its donor network passed 2.4 exaflops during March and April 2020. An exaflop represents one quintillion floating-point operations per second, though the exact workload and measurement conventions matter when comparing such figures.
Folding@home describes this as the first computing system of any kind to cross the exaflop threshold, and says it was briefly faster than the world’s top supercomputers combined. These are the project’s own reported figures and characterization; they describe the exceptional pandemic-era surge, not a present-day total.

How the figures compare with TOP500
TOP500’s figures refer to the combined performance of the systems on its ranked list, while Folding@home reported aggregate performance across its volunteer network. The available numbers show how the headline comparison arose:
| Source and date | Reported performance | What the figure describes |
|---|---|---|
| Folding@home, March 25, 2020 | Approximately 1.5 exaflops | Project timeline milestone |
| Folding@home, March and April 2020 | More than 2.4 exaflops | Reported donor-network performance |
| TOP500, June 2020 | 2.21 exaflops | Combined performance of all 500 listed systems |
| TOP500, November 2020 | 2.43 exaflops | Combined performance of all 500 listed systems |
On those reported aggregate figures, Folding@home’s March–April peak was above TOP500’s June 2020 total. TOP500’s November total was 2.43 exaflops, so the comparison depends on the date being discussed; it is not accurate to treat the 2020 headline as a timeless ranking.

The sources do not establish that Folding@home and TOP500 used identical workloads, numerical precision, or measurement procedures. The figures therefore provide a useful sense of scale, but they do not prove that the volunteer network beat every supercomputer in a controlled, like-for-like test.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the project used so much computing power
Protein simulations help researchers investigate how proteins move and behave at a molecular level, which can inform biomedical research. Folding@home’s purpose is to provide computational research capacity, not to deliver a direct medical treatment. The size of the network alone does not establish a cure or clinical outcome.
