VPNBook is a real, free VPN service, but it is not a reliable VPN for all users or a fully private replacement for a paid VPN. As of August 2026, VPNBook offers manual OpenVPN, WireGuard, Outline, PPTP, and web-proxy access without registration, making it best for casual browsing and temporary use—not high-risk privacy or dependable streaming.

VPNBook is more capable than older reviews suggest because it now advertises WireGuard and Outline alongside OpenVPN and PPTP. However, the service still relies on shared credentials, manual configuration, a relatively small network, and privacy documentation that contains an important daily-versus-weekly log-deletion contradiction.

Key takeaways

  • VPNBook advertises free, no-registration access through OpenVPN, WireGuard, Outline, PPTP, and web proxies in six listed countries as of August 2026.
  • VPNBook says it does not store browsing traffic but does log the connecting IP address and connection time; its official pages disagree about whether those logs are deleted daily or weekly.
  • OpenVPN is VPNBook’s best general-purpose choice, while WireGuard is the modern alternative; VPNBook’s WireGuard configurations are device-limited and expire, with the official WireGuard page stating seven days.
  • PPTP is easier to configure on some older devices but is labeled “Basic” by VPNBook and should not be used for sensitive activity.
  • VPNBook can suit low-risk, temporary browsing, but Proton VPN Free is the stronger general free recommendation and Windscribe is more flexible when a monthly data cap is acceptable.

What is VPNBook?

VPNBook is a free VPN and proxy service that provides access without the conventional account-registration process used by most subscription VPNs. Users typically download configuration files or generate credentials from VPNBook’s website, then connect through a compatible VPN client.

According to VPNBook’s current free VPN page, the service lists OpenVPN, WireGuard, Outline, PPTP, and web-proxy access, with VPN locations in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Poland. The current page lists roughly 15 VPN servers depending on protocol and availability, but server names and status can change.

VPNBook says it is funded by website advertising and donations. Its advertising disclosure says Playwire may collect aggregated and anonymized information from visitors to VPNBook.com for advertising purposes. Website advertising data is separate from the contents of traffic passing through a VPN tunnel and should not be presented as proof that VPNBook sells VPN browsing histories.

VPNBook is not the same kind of product as a polished subscription VPN app. VPNBook generally requires users to select a protocol, obtain a current shared password or generated configuration, install a third-party-compatible client, import a profile, and troubleshoot the connection themselves.

VPN connection, web proxy, and manual protocol: what is the difference?

Access method What it does What it does not do
Full VPN connection Routes device traffic through a VPN tunnel when the client and routing rules are configured correctly. It does not automatically guarantee a kill switch, leak protection, anonymity, or malware protection.
HTTP/web proxy Routes browser or proxy-aware application traffic through a web proxy. It does not protect all device traffic and is not a replacement for a full VPN tunnel.
Manual OpenVPN, WireGuard, Outline, or PPTP Uses a compatible third-party client and VPNBook’s configuration or credentials. It does not provide the one-click app experience, automatic updates, or integrated safety controls of many commercial VPNs.

Is VPNBook legitimate?

VPNBook appears to be a functioning free VPN service, but “legitimate” should not be treated as equivalent to “independently audited,” “no-logs verified,” or “safe for high-risk activity.” The service has an active official website, current server listings, setup documentation, configuration downloads, and recent service updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

VPNBook’s homepage showed a password update dated July 18, 2026. The service’s updates also announced WireGuard as newly available on February 22, 2026. Those current updates indicate that VPNBook is not merely an abandoned project or a review-site listing; they do not prove strong privacy, stable speeds, or dependable access to every website.

The most accurate verdict is that VPNBook is real and usable, but its legitimacy does not establish independent verification of its logging practices, server infrastructure, security controls, or performance.

Which VPNBook protocol should you choose?

OpenVPN is VPNBook’s best general-purpose option, while WireGuard is the most attractive modern alternative. Outline can help in some restrictive-network scenarios, PPTP is a legacy compatibility option, and the web proxy is suitable only for limited browser traffic.

Need Best VPNBook option Why Main drawback
Best general security OpenVPN VPNBook calls OpenVPN its most secure and recommended option; it is mature and widely supported. Manual setup and a separate OpenVPN-compatible client are required.
Modern performance-oriented protocol WireGuard VPNBook describes WireGuard as modern and fast, and configurations can be imported into the official WireGuard client. Generated configurations expire and are limited to one device at a time.
Connection that may be harder to detect Outline or an appropriate OpenVPN profile VPNBook presents Outline as fast and difficult to detect; TCP 443 can be useful on restrictive networks. Compatibility, speed, and blocking resistance vary by network.
Legacy device or built-in VPN controls PPTP Some older operating systems include PPTP settings and do not require a separate client. VPNBook labels the security as “Basic”; PPTP is not appropriate for sensitive use.
One browser session Web proxy No VPN client is required for traffic sent through the proxy. It does not protect other applications or all device traffic.

VPNBook’s protocol labels are provider descriptions, not the result of an independent security audit. A protocol can be technically strong while the surrounding configuration lacks a kill switch, secure DNS, or reliable leak protection.

How does OpenVPN work with VPNBook?

OpenVPN requires an OpenVPN-compatible client and VPNBook’s downloaded .ovpn configuration files. VPNBook says the certificate authority certificate is embedded in the configuration files rather than supplied separately.

OpenVPN is the sensible default when security and broad client compatibility matter more than effortless setup. Where VPNBook provides both UDP and TCP profiles, UDP will often be preferable for performance, while TCP 443 may connect more successfully on networks that restrict or inspect VPN traffic.

How does WireGuard work with VPNBook?

VPNBook generates WireGuard configurations through its website. The official WireGuard configuration page offers UDP ports 443, 80, 123, and 25018; VPNBook describes port 443 as useful for bypassing firewalls and port 25018 as best for speed.

The same official page says each generated configuration expires after seven days and can be used on only one device at a time. VPNBook’s homepage has separately described WireGuard access as involving 48-hour sessions, so readers should treat the exact session duration as inconsistent across official pages and follow the current instructions displayed during configuration generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are Outline, PPTP, and the web proxy used for?

Outline uses the Shadowsocks-based Outline client and a VPNBook connection string. VPNBook presents Outline as fast and difficult to detect, but its protocol comparison labels peer-to-peer support as limited for Outline.

PPTP is mainly a legacy compatibility option. A built-in VPN menu and simple credentials can make PPTP convenient, but convenience does not make PPTP secure. Do not use PPTP for banking, medical communications, legal work, sensitive accounts, or other high-risk activity.

VPNBook lists web-proxy endpoints in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. A web proxy can be useful for a single browser session, but applications that do not use the proxy and other device traffic will continue using the normal connection.

How do you set up VPNBook?

VPNBook setup is manual. Use only the official VPNBook website and its official setup guides; do not download shared credentials or configuration files from third-party mirrors.

How do you set up VPNBook with OpenVPN?

  1. Open VPNBook’s official free VPN page.
  2. Select an OpenVPN server that the current VPNBook page shows as online.
  3. Download the corresponding OpenVPN configuration bundle.
  4. Install an OpenVPN-compatible client for the operating system.
  5. Import the relevant .ovpn file into the client.
  6. Retrieve the current VPNBook username and password from the official VPNBook page and enter them when prompted.
  7. Connect and wait for the client to report a successful tunnel.
  8. Check the public IP address, DNS behavior, and IPv6 behavior after connecting.

Do not rely on a password copied from an old article. VPNBook changes its shared password periodically; the official contact page says the password is updated every one to two weeks, while the homepage displayed a July 18, 2026 update date. The official VPNBook setup guide index contains platform-specific instructions.

How do you set up VPNBook with WireGuard?

  1. Install the official WireGuard client for the device.
  2. Open VPNBook’s WireGuard page.
  3. Select a VPNBook server.
  4. Select an available UDP port.
  5. Accept the conditions shown by VPNBook.
  6. Generate a new WireGuard configuration.
  7. Import the resulting .conf file into WireGuard, or scan the displayed QR code on a mobile device.
  8. Activate the tunnel.
  9. Confirm the public IP address and check for DNS and IPv6 leaks.
  10. Generate and import a new configuration when the existing configuration expires.

How do you set up VPNBook with PPTP?

On a legacy device that still supports PPTP, open the operating system’s built-in VPN settings, create a PPTP connection, enter the VPNBook server hostname, and provide the current VPNBook username and password. The exact menu names vary by operating system.

PPTP should be treated as a compatibility workaround, not a security recommendation. Do not use PPTP for sensitive communications, financial activity, or high-risk privacy needs.

What should you do when VPNBook will not connect?

  • Confirm that the selected VPNBook server is currently shown as online.
  • Download a fresh configuration file rather than reusing an old profile.
  • Retrieve the current shared password again from the official VPNBook site.
  • Try another server in the same country or a nearby country.
  • Switch between UDP and TCP profiles when both are available.
  • Try TCP port 443 on a restrictive network, while recognizing that TCP can be slower than UDP.
  • Check whether another VPN, proxy, firewall, antivirus product, or corporate policy is interfering.
  • Verify that the device clock is correct because an incorrect system time can break certificate validation.
  • Test DNS and IPv6 separately after the client reports that it is connected.
  • Remove obsolete profiles before importing a replacement configuration.

Is VPNBook private and secure?

VPNBook says it does not store users’ internet browsing traffic, but VPNBook also discloses connection logging. The accurate summary is not “VPNBook keeps no logs”; the accurate summary is that VPNBook claims not to store browsing traffic while logging the connecting IP address and connection time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does VPNBook say it logs?

According to VPNBook’s features page, connection logs are automatically removed every day. However, VPNBook’s contact and privacy page says those logs are deleted every week. The pages therefore contain a material retention-period inconsistency that should not be silently resolved.

VPNBook’s stated rules prohibit abuse, hacking, attacks, and fraudulent activity, and say the user is responsible for activity conducted through the service. A VPN provider’s permission for ordinary use does not make unlawful activity acceptable or make shared VPN addresses anonymous.

What privacy protections are not established by the available evidence?

The reviewed official material does not establish an independent no-logs audit, a warrant canary, a detailed transparency report, a public audit of server infrastructure, a comprehensive explanation of legal-request handling, or complete internal access controls.

The reviewed material also does not guarantee protection against DNS leaks, IPv6 leaks, WebRTC exposure, application-level leaks, or traffic continuing after a tunnel failure. A working encrypted connection can mask the public IP address without making a user anonymous.

Does VPNBook’s website advertising mean it sells VPN browsing history?

No such conclusion is established by the available evidence. VPNBook’s advertising disclosure concerns visits to VPNBook.com and says Playwire may collect aggregated and anonymized information for advertising. Website advertising technology, VPN connection metadata, and the contents of traffic passing through the VPN tunnel are separate categories of information.

Is VPNBook safe for everyday browsing?

VPNBook can be reasonable for low-risk browsing when the user understands the manual setup and verifies the connection. VPNBook should not be treated as a complete security system because encryption and IP masking do not automatically provide a kill switch, secure DNS, protection from malicious websites, or anonymity from the VPN operator and destination websites.

Third-party testing has raised additional concerns. Top10VPN’s historical review reported IPv6 leaks, criticized the service’s privacy features, and found poor download performance, with local downloads struggling to reach 14 Mbps in that test. The test is historical rather than a current August 2026 benchmark, so it should be treated as evidence of past limitations, not proof of VPNBook’s present speed on every server.

VPNBook advertises AES-256 and AES-128 encryption, optimized dedicated hardware, unrestricted speed, and unlimited traffic. Those are VPNBook’s claims; they are not current independent performance measurements or proof that every configuration supplies equivalent protection.

Does VPNBook reliably unblock Netflix, Hulu, or other streaming services?

VPNBook should not be chosen for guaranteed streaming access. VPNBook has historically advertised access to country-restricted websites and US and UK streaming services, but streaming platforms continually block known VPN addresses, and shared free-VPN endpoints are particularly likely to be detected.

A server that reaches a streaming service one day may fail the next day. Web proxies are especially unsuitable for dependable streaming because they do not provide a full-device tunnel. VPNBook’s official pages make broad unblocking claims, while independent reviews have reported streaming limitations; the available evidence does not prove consistent Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, or similar access in August 2026. See the third-party VPNBook review coverage for reported limitations, while treating older tests as time-specific.

Does VPNBook allow torrenting?

VPNBook says peer-to-peer applications are permitted, and its current protocol comparison marks P2P as supported for OpenVPN, WireGuard, and PPTP while listing Outline as limited. VPNBook also prohibits abuse and unlawful activity, so P2P permission is not permission to infringe copyright or attack other systems.

P2P permission is not the same as anonymity. Shared VPN IP addresses can attract abuse complaints, and a VPN connection without a tested kill switch can expose the real IP address if the tunnel drops. Users remain responsible for copyright compliance and should not use PPTP for torrenting merely because VPNBook lists PPTP as technically supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What devices does VPNBook support?

VPNBook publishes manual setup guides for Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 7, macOS, Ubuntu Linux, iOS, and Android. The official guide index also covers WireGuard on Windows, macOS, and Ubuntu, PPTP on several platforms, and router secure-DNS configuration.

“Supports” generally means that a device can use a compatible client or built-in VPN controls. It does not mean that VPNBook provides a native app with one-click connection, automatic server selection, automatic credential updates, integrated kill-switch support, or identical protocol availability on every platform.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How reliable and fast is VPNBook?

There is not enough current independent evidence to call VPNBook consistently fast or reliable. Performance depends on server load, distance, protocol, UDP or TCP selection, local ISP conditions, firewall interference, device hardware, client software, and whether the shared credentials or configuration have changed.

VPNBook claims optimized dedicated hardware, unrestricted speed, and unlimited traffic on its features page. Provider claims describe the intended service but do not establish a guaranteed experience for every user.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Online” on VPNBook’s server page means that an endpoint is responding according to the service’s status information. An online server is not necessarily fast, low-latency, suitable for streaming, leak-free, or stable throughout the day.

What do VPNBook’s port choices mean?

TCP 443 may connect more reliably on restrictive networks because it resembles ordinary HTTPS traffic, but TCP can be slower than UDP. Higher UDP ports may provide better speed in some circumstances but can be blocked by certain networks. Port selection is a practical troubleshooting choice, not a guarantee of bypassing censorship or improving performance.

VPNBook versus Proton VPN Free and Windscribe

VPNBook is the most flexible choice only for readers who value no registration and manual access above convenience. Proton VPN Free is the stronger default for most people who want a free VPN app, while Windscribe is attractive for users who want more location control and can accept a monthly data allowance.

Service Free access Free-plan limitation or trade-off Setup and product fit Best for
VPNBook Yes Manual setup, shared credentials, limited locations, uncertain reliability, and inconsistent retention wording Protocol-specific third-party clients; no-registration access advertised Temporary, low-risk browsing and technical users
Proton VPN Free Yes One device and randomly selected servers in 10 countries according to Proton’s plan comparison Polished app experience; Proton says the free plan has no activity logs and no ads Most users wanting a simpler free privacy-oriented VPN
Windscribe Free Yes 2 GB per month without confirmed email; 10 GB per month with confirmed email; servers in 11 countries App-based access with more free location flexibility but a monthly cap Users who want more control and can manage limited data
Proton VPN Plus Paid Requires a subscription; current promotional pricing can change by region and date More locations, up to 10 devices, streaming access, and advanced features are associated with paid plans Streaming, travel, and multiple-device households
Windscribe Pro Paid Requires a subscription; official page dated May 1, 2026 listed $9 monthly or $69 annually Unlimited data and all locations are associated with the paid plan Users wanting Windscribe’s broader service

Proton says its free plan has no data or time limits, no ads, one device, and randomly selected servers in 10 countries in its plan comparison. Proton’s free-versus-paid page distinguishes the free plan from paid features such as broader server selection, streaming access, and additional devices. Plan availability and features can change, so confirm current terms before subscribing.

Windscribe’s official pricing information says the free plan provides 2 GB per month without a confirmed email address or 10 GB per month with a confirmed email address, with servers in 11 countries. The same official page dated May 1, 2026 listed Build-a-Plan at a $3 monthly minimum and Pro at $9 per month or $69 per year. Promotional offers and regional pricing can change.

Who should use VPNBook?

  • Use VPNBook when you need a free service immediately and the activity is low risk.
  • Use VPNBook when you are comfortable installing and troubleshooting OpenVPN or WireGuard manually.
  • Use VPNBook for temporary access, experimentation, or basic browsing rather than a permanent household VPN.
  • Consider VPNBook when a legacy device requires PPTP, but accept that PPTP is a serious security compromise.
  • Use VPNBook when a small selection of countries is sufficient and you are willing to check current server status and credentials.

Who should avoid VPNBook?

  • Avoid VPNBook for banking, medical, legal, activist, journalistic, or other high-risk privacy work.
  • Avoid VPNBook if you need a verified no-logs policy, a kill switch, strong leak protection, or independently tested infrastructure.
  • Avoid VPNBook if reliable Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, or other streaming access is the main objective.
  • Avoid VPNBook if you need many countries, multiple simultaneous devices, or a simple native app.
  • Avoid VPNBook if certificate, profile, DNS, and protocol troubleshooting is unacceptable.

How should you verify a VPNBook connection?

  1. Before connecting, record the device’s normal public IP address.
  2. Connect through OpenVPN or WireGuard rather than PPTP for ordinary use.
  3. Confirm that the public IP address changes to the VPN server’s address.
  4. Run a DNS-leak test and verify that DNS requests do not unexpectedly use the local ISP.
  5. Check IPv6 separately because a changed IPv4 address does not prove that IPv6 traffic is tunneled.
  6. Test WebRTC exposure in the browser if browser privacy matters.
  7. Disconnect the tunnel and confirm that sensitive applications do not continue sending traffic without protection.

A VPN client reporting “connected” confirms only that the client believes a tunnel exists. Verification is necessary because IPv6, DNS, WebRTC, application-specific routing, and tunnel-drop behavior can expose information outside the VPN.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does VPNBook require an account?

No. VPNBook advertises access without registration, although users generally need a shared username and password or a generated configuration file. The trade-off is less signup friction but more manual maintenance and no personal account-recovery path.

Does VPNBook keep logs?

VPNBook says it does not store browsing traffic, but it does disclose logging the connecting IP address and connection time. VPNBook’s official pages disagree about whether connection logs are deleted daily or weekly, so “no logs” is not an accurate summary.

Which VPNBook protocol is safest?

OpenVPN is VPNBook’s recommended general-purpose protocol, and WireGuard is the modern alternative. Neither protocol automatically guarantees a kill switch, secure DNS, leak protection, or anonymity, so users should verify DNS and IPv6 behavior after connecting.

Is VPNBook good for Netflix or streaming?

VPNBook is not a dependable streaming choice. Shared free-VPN addresses can be blocked, and the available evidence does not prove consistent access to Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, or similar services in August 2026.

Is Proton VPN Free better than VPNBook?

Proton VPN Free is the stronger default for most users who want a simple free VPN app, unlimited data, no ads, and a privacy-oriented product model. VPNBook remains useful for readers who specifically need no-registration manual access or legacy protocol support.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: VPNBook is a legitimate, operating free VPN fallback, not a universally reliable or fully private VPN for all users. Choose OpenVPN for the safest general VPNBook setup or WireGuard for a modern manual connection, verify IP/DNS/IPv6 behavior, and obtain credentials only from VPNBook’s official site. Choose Proton VPN Free for the stronger everyday free default, or Windscribe when additional location flexibility is worth accepting a monthly data cap.
