A VPN app’s “connected” status does not prove that every app used the VPN route—or explain a warning about activity that happened earlier. First identify who sent the notice and when; then check your current public IP and DNS, and, if peer-to-peer traffic is involved, verify the torrent client’s server and interface settings.
First identify what kind of warning you received
Keep the notice and note its sender, alleged event date and time (including time zone), and any IP address it lists. An ISP copyright notice, a rights-holder agent’s notice, a VPN provider’s message, and a website’s location or proxy warning are different symptoms. A website can reject a VPN connection without that being evidence of an ISP copyright notice, and a current leak test cannot by itself show what route your traffic took at the time of a past event.
Check your current VPN route
Run these checks while the VPN is connected. They show what an external service observes now, not what happened during an earlier session.
- Check the public IP. Use an external IP checker and compare its result with your selected VPN endpoint. The result should reflect the VPN route, not your home ISP’s public address. Private Internet Access explains its public-IP check in its VPN IP check guidance; ExpressVPN also describes checking your IP and DNS in its VPN troubleshooting guidance.
- Check DNS. Run a DNS leak test and review the reported DNS servers. If they appear to be associated with your ISP rather than the VPN, the test indicates a possible DNS routing issue. ExpressVPN says to contact its support team if a DNS leak appears despite a successful connection.
- Save the results. Record the time, VPN server, app and operating-system versions, protocol, and test results. Those details help support staff investigate a current routing problem.
If an IP or DNS test shows your ISP route while the VPN app says it is connected, contact your VPN provider’s support with those details. A passing test now does not establish that the VPN was working at the time named in an older notice.

If peer-to-peer traffic is involved, check the torrent client
For a torrent client, the VPN app’s status is only one part of the check. Confirm that the selected VPN server permits P2P traffic, then make sure the client is bound to the VPN network interface rather than the ordinary internet connection. Proton VPN identifies P2P servers in its app and describes binding with clients such as qBittorrent and Vuze in its P2P server guidance.
Proton VPN warns that selecting the regular internet connection instead of the VPN in a torrent client can expose the real IP even when the VPN kill switch is enabled. Check the client’s current instructions for selecting the correct interface; labels and menus vary by operating system and client version. Use only authorized, benign material when checking configuration, not copyrighted content as a test.

Check what happens if the VPN disconnects
Review the kill-switch setting and verify that the torrent client does not continue over your normal network connection if the tunnel drops. A kill switch and binding the client to a VPN interface are related but distinct safeguards: check each separately using your VPN provider’s and client’s current instructions. Do not assume that a successful interruption test today proves what happened during a past session.
If a website shows the wrong location, check browser and device signals
A website may infer location using signals beyond your public IP. Private Internet Access discusses DNS routing, browser location permission, WebRTC, cookies and cached data, and device location services in its location troubleshooting guidance and IP leak guidance. Review the affected site’s browser permissions and your device’s location access, as well as cookies and cached data, if the symptom is a website displaying the wrong location.

WebRTC settings can matter to real-time browser features. CyberGhost cautions that disabling WebRTC may affect video conferencing, voice calls, screen sharing, and some peer-to-peer applications in its connection leak guidance. After changing WebRTC settings, check the calls or sharing features you rely on.
Match an older notice to the records you have
If the tests pass now but the notice concerns a past event, compare its timestamp and alleged IP with whatever VPN, torrent-client, device, and router records are available. The timing matters: a current test describes the current configuration, not past traffic. General troubleshooting pages cannot determine the cause of an individual notice or its legal effect. If the notice may have legal consequences, seek qualified advice for the relevant jurisdiction.

Provider statements about logging or handling notices apply to that provider’s own published policies, not VPN services as a whole. IVPN describes its approach in its notice-handling and logs information; read the policy of the service involved rather than treating another provider’s statements as evidence about it.

- Whether the provider explains how to check for IP and DNS leaks.
- How its kill switch behaves and which devices support it.
- Whether P2P is allowed on the specific servers you would use.
- Whether it documents binding common torrent clients to the VPN interface.
- What support and notice-handling information it publishes.
These criteria help you assess troubleshooting support; they do not establish a universal safest service or guarantee that a VPN will prevent notices.
