Vodafone Business is taking an infrastructure-first approach to AI. At the 8 October 2026 investor day, AI appeared mainly in discussions of AI infrastructure and AI-RAN rather than as a portfolio of branded enterprise applications. The strategy is pragmatic: use Vodafone’s mobile, fixed, cloud, security and Internet of Things (IoT) assets to carry and operate AI workloads, while expanding faster-growing network services.

That restraint is why the approach can look distinctly British, although “very British” is an interpretation of the company’s practical emphasis, not an official Vodafone slogan. Mobile remains the division’s commercial base; network slicing, fixed wireless access (FWA), SD-WAN, cloud and security are the main growth bets. The following figures were reported by James Blackman in RCR Wireless News on 12 October 2026 from Vodafone’s presentation.

What is Vodafone Business’s AI strategy?

Vodafone Business is treating AI first as a network and infrastructure problem, not as a heavily marketed standalone software category. The investor-day discussion focused on how networks must support AI computing and how AI can evolve network operations.

Networks chief Andrea Donà highlighted AI infrastructure and AI-RAN. In practical terms, that means preparing radio and transport networks for traffic generated by model training and inference, while using machine learning within the radio access network to improve capacity, energy use, fault detection and automation. The presentation did not establish a separate Vodafone Business generative-AI product family or a revenue target for AI applications.

AI received little attention during the three-and-a-half-hour event apart from several answers in the question-and-answer session. That is significant: Vodafone is presenting connectivity and managed technology as the route to monetising the AI cycle, rather than promising that it will become an application vendor. The approach is more measured than the headline language often used by technology companies, but it fits an operator whose existing customer relationships and network footprint are its strongest assets.

How large is Vodafone Business after the Three integration?

Vodafone Business reported £1.85 billion in service revenue for 2025/26, representing about 27% of VodafoneThree’s total service revenue for the period. It had 6.5 million mobile connections and 15.3 million IoT connections, adding approximately 11,500 IoT connections per day, according to the RCR Wireless News account.

The UK combination with Three creates an additional installed base to work. About one million Three business connections are expected to be migrated, then used for cross-selling and upselling. Migration is not the same as winning new customers: Vodafone must move contracts and devices without disrupting service before it can attach fixed access, security, cloud or collaboration services. The enlarged base therefore creates opportunity, but also a substantial execution task.

Does Vodafone make more money from mobile, cloud or security?

Mobile is still the largest individual service category, while cloud and security are smaller but strategically important. Vodafone Business’s reported mix puts mobile at half of divisional revenue; cloud and security together account for 15%.

Service Share of Vodafone Business revenue What that implies
Mobile 50% Core revenue engine and the division’s strongest UK enterprise position
Fixed 26% Large existing business, but with a weaker UK share than the leading incumbent
Cloud 8% Smaller base with a 2030 growth forecast above overall market-like connectivity growth
Security 7% Attach opportunity to connectivity and managed services
IoT 6% Already scaled to 15.3 million connections and expanding daily
Digital communications 7% Messaging and communications services beyond basic access

The percentages are the mix reported from the presentation and are rounded, so they total slightly more than 100% when added. They should be read as directional rather than as an audited segment statement. The commercial logic is clear nonetheless: mobile funds the business today, while cloud, security, IoT and digital communications provide additional services that can be sold to the same account.

Is Vodafone stronger in mobile or fixed enterprise services?

Vodafone’s clearest UK advantage is enterprise mobile. Its fixed position is much smaller than the leading incumbent’s, so the strategy depends on combining mobile strength with wireless and partner-enabled fixed alternatives.

UK enterprise market Vodafone Other reported shares
Mobile 41% BT/EE 30%; VMO2 25%; others 5% (rounded figures)
Fixed 14% BT/EE 47%; others 33%; VMO2 described as further behind

A 41% mobile share gives Vodafone a natural point of entry for unified communications, security and IoT. A 14% fixed share makes every account win harder, particularly where customers want an incumbent-managed fibre estate. This is why FWA, SD-WAN and network slicing matter: they can improve the value of Vodafone’s mobile footprint without requiring the company to replicate every kilometre of fixed infrastructure.

Which Vodafone Business services are expected to grow fastest by 2030?

The fastest forecast growth is in network slicing, followed by FWA, cloud and SD-WAN. The figures are compound annual growth rate (CAGR) forecasts cited in the investor-day material, not Vodafone guarantees or observed growth already achieved.

Service or capability 2030 CAGR forecast Strategic role
Network slicing 31% Premium, logically separated connectivity for demanding applications
FWA 14% Wireless alternative or supplement to fixed access
Cloud 14% Managed computing and connectivity attached to enterprise accounts
SD-WAN 13% Policy-controlled connectivity across sites, links and cloud services
Security 10% Protection and monitoring sold with network services
IoT 6% Device connectivity and management at large scale
Fixed 1.5% Steady, mature connectivity category
Mobile 0.9% Large, mature base with limited forecast market growth

The contrast is more important than any single percentage. Vodafone expects mature access products to grow slowly while software-defined and managed capabilities expand faster. Network slicing’s 31% forecast is especially notable, but it starts from a smaller base than mobile; a high CAGR does not mean it will replace mobile revenue by 2030.

What is AI-RAN and why does Vodafone care about it?

AI-RAN refers to using artificial intelligence in and around the radio access network, while also redesigning radio infrastructure to handle AI-driven workloads. Vodafone’s comments indicate interest in both sides: operating the network more intelligently and ensuring the network can serve organisations whose applications depend on intensive AI computing.

AI used to run the network

  • Traffic forecasting can help shift capacity before congestion appears.
  • Automated optimisation can adjust radio parameters as demand and conditions change.
  • Anomaly detection can identify faults or unusual behaviour earlier than manual monitoring.
  • Energy-management models can put equipment into lower-power states when demand allows.

These are capabilities of the network-operations layer, not promises that every Vodafone customer will receive a named AI application. Their value is usually measured through reliability, operating cost and faster service changes.

Networks built for AI workloads

AI training and inference can create large, bursty flows between data centres, edge locations and end users. That increases the importance of predictable latency, resilient backhaul, cloud interconnection and security controls. Network slicing could let an operator reserve a defined performance profile for a particular workload, although the investor-day material did not specify commercial slice guarantees, prices or availability dates.

Is Vodafone taking a different approach to AI than US telcos?

The available evidence supports a difference in emphasis, not a definitive league table. Vodafone’s event placed AI infrastructure and AI-RAN in a supporting role, whereas many US operators publicly foreground AI partnerships, applications or enterprise platforms. The material cited here does not provide comparable US revenue, investment or product data, so it cannot prove that Vodafone is spending less or moving more slowly.

A fair comparison should use five tests: the operator’s mobile versus fixed strength; current revenue mix versus forecast growth; exposure to slicing, FWA, SD-WAN, cloud and security; whether AI is aimed at network operations or at selling AI applications; and the balance of SoHo, SME, private-enterprise and public-sector customers. On those measures, Vodafone looks connectivity-led and operationally pragmatic. That is the basis for the “very British” description, not a formal national model or Vodafone strategy label.

Which customers is Vodafone Business trying to win?

Vodafone’s own segmentation shows a broad base, with the largest single group being larger private enterprises. Director Nick Gliddon said, “We’re strong in SoHo and private; we’ve got headroom to grow in SME and public.”

Customer segment Share of divisional revenue What Vodafone’s comment suggests
SoHo 27% Established strength among small offices and home offices
SME 23% Identified headroom for additional growth
Larger private enterprise 31% Largest reported segment and a core relationship base
Public sector 19% Explicit growth opportunity, subject to procurement and contract cycles

This mix helps explain the restrained AI positioning. Smaller businesses generally buy outcomes such as dependable connectivity, secure access and simpler management rather than raw model infrastructure. Larger companies and public bodies may need dedicated performance, compliance controls and integration with existing cloud estates; those needs align with SD-WAN, security, slicing and managed cloud services.

How could the Three integration change Vodafone Business’s offer?

The immediate task is service continuity during the migration of about one million Three business connections. After that, Vodafone can use the combined account base to attach products that a mobile-only customer may not yet buy.

  1. Stabilise the mobile relationship. Complete contract, billing, identity and network changes without interrupting users or device fleets.
  2. Map unmet needs. Identify sites lacking resilient fixed access, secure remote connectivity, device management or cloud links.
  3. Attach the simplest adjacent service. FWA can address locations where wired access is slow to deliver; SD-WAN can connect distributed sites; security can protect the resulting estate.
  4. Use performance-sensitive options selectively. Network slicing is most relevant where an application has measurable latency, reliability or isolation requirements.
  5. Measure retention as well as sales. A migration that increases product count but causes churn would destroy the value of the enlarged base.

The investor-day figures do not disclose migration dates, customer-level targets or guaranteed attach rates. Buyers should therefore treat the integration as an opportunity under execution, not as completed scale.

What should an enterprise buyer expect from this strategy?

Expect Vodafone to lead with a connectivity conversation and then broaden it into managed network, cloud and security services. The exact offer will depend on location, access availability, regulatory requirements and the customer’s existing suppliers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • For small businesses: packaged mobile, fixed or FWA access with security and simple administration is more likely to matter than bespoke AI infrastructure.
  • For multi-site companies: ask how SD-WAN policies, cloud on-ramps, failover and security monitoring are operated end to end.
  • For IoT fleets: clarify device lifecycle management, roaming, telemetry, identity and what support is available when connection volumes scale.
  • For latency-sensitive applications: request a written description of any slicing or quality-of-service capability, including geographic coverage, measurement method and remedies when targets are missed.
  • For public-sector procurement: verify data residency, accessibility, security accreditation, subcontractors and exit provisions rather than relying on a general AI claim.

What are the main risks and unknowns?

The largest uncertainty is execution. A strong mobile position does not automatically produce profitable cloud, security or fixed growth, and a forecast CAGR does not reveal margins, customer acquisition costs or capital requirements.

  • Integration risk: migrating a large Three business base can expose billing, coverage, contract and support problems.
  • Fixed-market disadvantage: Vodafone’s reported 14% enterprise-fixed share trails BT/EE’s 47%, limiting bundled control of the access layer.
  • AI monetisation risk: network improvements may reduce costs without creating a separately chargeable AI product.
  • Technology maturity: slicing and AI-RAN require compatible devices, orchestration and operational skills across more than one supplier.
  • Evidence limits: the figures come from RCR Wireless News’s account of the investor day; a separately accessible Vodafone slide deck or transcript was not available, so detailed definitions and targets should be confirmed in contract discussions.

How can you evaluate Vodafone’s AI and network claims?

Ask for operational evidence rather than accepting “AI-powered” as a product specification.

  1. Define the workload: ordinary office traffic, IoT telemetry, real-time control, model inference or data-centre replication.
  2. Set measurable requirements for latency, jitter, availability, throughput, isolation and recovery time.
  3. Identify where processing occurs and which data crosses public, private or sovereign-cloud boundaries.
  4. Request architecture and responsibility diagrams covering radio, transport, cloud, security and support escalation.
  5. Check geographic coverage and whether the promised capability is live, trial-only or dependent on future software and hardware.
  6. Require service-level reporting, change controls and an exit plan before committing to a multi-year contract.

What is the practical takeaway from Vodafone Business’s 2026 plan?

Vodafone Business is not presenting AI as a sudden new line of applications. It is using AI to reinforce a connectivity-led enterprise model: mobile supplies scale, while slicing, FWA, SD-WAN, cloud, security and IoT are intended to raise value per customer.

The strategy can work if Vodafone converts its 6.5 million mobile and 15.3 million IoT connections into broader managed-service relationships, executes the Three migration cleanly and turns network capabilities into contracts with measurable outcomes. For buyers, the sensible test is not whether Vodafone uses the word AI, but whether its network, cloud and security commitments improve a specific workload at an accountable price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Vodafone Business sell a standalone generative-AI application suite?

The investor-day material did not identify a standalone generative-AI application portfolio or an AI-app revenue target. Vodafone’s stated emphasis was on infrastructure and network evolution, so buyers should ask account teams for any product-specific roadmap rather than assume one exists.

Is AI-RAN available to every Vodafone customer today?

No launch timetable or universal availability claim was provided. AI-RAN capabilities can depend on geography, radio equipment, software releases and the customer’s service design, so availability must be confirmed for the relevant locations and workload.

What should a company migrating from Three check first?

Check contract novation, billing ownership, number and device continuity, support contacts and coverage at every operating site. Obtain a written migration plan with rollback procedures before adding new cloud, security or network services.

Can Vodafone’s IoT scale support critical industrial systems?

Connection count alone does not establish suitability for a critical-control application. Evaluate latency, resilience, identity, firmware management, edge processing, security monitoring and the recovery process for loss of connectivity.
