VMware SD-WAN Orchestrator is the centralized management and operations plane for VeloCloud SD-WAN Edges; it is not the branch appliance itself. Since Arista acquired VeloCloud effective July 1, 2025, customers should look to Arista for support and current product information. For new Azure Virtual WAN deployments, Microsoft’s stated cutoff has now passed: new VMware SD-WAN deployments were to be blocked at the end of June 2026, while existing deployments continue to work. Arista VeloCloud is the closest continuity option; HPE Aruba EdgeConnect, Versa, Cisco, Fortinet, and Palo Alto are alternatives to assess against your network and security requirements.
What does VMware SD-WAN Orchestrator do?
Orchestrator is the central control and operations plane used to configure, provision, monitor, and troubleshoot VeloCloud Edges. An Edge is the physical or virtual device deployed at a branch or other network location. The distinction matters: replacing an Edge appliance does not, by itself, replace the management system, policy model, or operating workflow around it.
In a typical VeloCloud design, branch or virtual Edges connect over available WAN links to geographically distributed gateways. Orchestrator applies business policies and provides visibility into application and link performance. The system is designed to work across broadband, MPLS, LTE, and 5G connectivity, with capabilities such as application recognition, traffic steering, quality-of-service controls, route control, and centralized troubleshooting. The exact capabilities available to an organization depend on its product version, deployment, configuration, and contract.

Arista’s VeloCloud 7.0 administration guide describes a multi-tenant cloud Orchestrator, zero-touch Edge activation, application recognition and steering, QoS, gateways, and route control. Those descriptions establish the role of the platform, but they are not a substitute for checking the features and support terms attached to a specific deployment.

Is VMware SD-WAN Orchestrator still supported?
VeloCloud changed ownership in 2025. Broadcom’s Knowledge Base says the product was acquired by Arista effective July 1, 2025, and Broadcom no longer supports it. Customers should use Arista’s support, documentation, downloads, and partner channels, and should verify the product name and software version in their contracts and release notes.
This is a change in ownership and support responsibility, not evidence that every existing installation stopped working or that every customer must immediately migrate. Existing deployments may remain in operation, but support, upgrade planning, and new purchasing decisions should be handled through the current owner. If a contract or internal inventory still uses the VMware SD-WAN or VeloCloud name, confirm with the vendor or partner which current product, release, and support entitlement it represents.
What replaced VMware VeloCloud?
Arista VeloCloud is the closest continuity path because it is the same VeloCloud technology under new ownership, with current Orchestrator and VeloCloud 7.0 administration documentation. It is more accurate to describe this as a change of ownership and portfolio presentation than as a wholly unrelated product replacing VeloCloud.
There is no single replacement that is automatically right for every organization. HPE Aruba EdgeConnect, Versa Secure SD-WAN, Cisco SD-WAN, Fortinet Secure SD-WAN, and Palo Alto Prisma SD-WAN are alternatives, but they differ in orchestration, security integration, hardware and virtual-edge choices, and operating model. Treat the list as a shortlist for evaluation—not as a claim that each product has feature-for-feature parity with VeloCloud.
Which cloud-managed SD-WAN alternatives should you evaluate?
Start with the reason you are considering a change. If your priority is continuity with an existing VeloCloud environment, assess Arista first. If you are redesigning around a different network or security strategy, compare the alternatives against concrete deployment and operating requirements rather than vendor names alone.

The table identifies why each option merits evaluation; it is not a product benchmark or a guarantee that functions map one-to-one. A vendor’s use of terms such as “application-aware,” “cloud-managed,” or “secure SD-WAN” does not establish that its policies, routing behavior, integrations, or management workflow will match your existing deployment.
Compare the operating model, not just the feature list
Ask whether the orchestration plane is cloud-managed, self-hosted, or available in more than one form, and what that means for your team’s access, change control, and operational responsibilities. Broadcom’s brief establishes cloud-hosted and on-premises Orchestrator options for VeloCloud; do not assume that another vendor offers the same choices without confirming its current documentation and contract.

For each candidate, establish how branch devices are provisioned, how policy changes are made and audited, and what monitoring and troubleshooting information operators can access. VeloCloud documentation describes zero-touch Edge activation and centralized monitoring. During an evaluation, ask vendors to demonstrate equivalent workflows using your requirements and to identify which steps remain manual.
Test network and security fit together
Document the routing, security, and cloud-connectivity requirements that matter in your environment. The alternatives shortlist distinguishes products partly by security integration and Azure availability; it does not establish equivalent support for every AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud design. Ask each vendor to validate the specific cloud paths, routing behavior, firewall or SASE integration, and high-availability design you plan to deploy.
Include application-aware steering and remediation, QoS, gateways, route control, and link monitoring in a scenario-based evaluation if those functions are important to your VeloCloud environment. Ask the vendor to show the behavior under your relevant conditions—such as a degraded WAN link or a route change—rather than relying on a broad feature label. Confirm which capabilities require a particular license, Edge model, software release, or service.

Check deployment, automation, and lifecycle needs
Compare physical and virtual Edge choices, APIs and automation, observability, and the process for adding or replacing sites. Migration tooling is a selection criterion, but its presence and scope are not established for every alternative here. Require a vendor or implementation partner to identify the migration tools, manual work, prerequisites, and rollback approach applicable to your specific deployment.

Can you deploy VMware SD-WAN in Azure Virtual WAN after June 2026?
Microsoft’s Azure Virtual WAN documentation says new VMware SD-WAN deployments would be blocked at the end of June 2026. As of October 2026, that stated cutoff has passed. Microsoft says existing deployments continue to work and identifies Arista VeloCloud as the option for new deployments.
This distinction is important: the documented change concerns new VMware SD-WAN deployments in Azure Virtual WAN; it does not say existing deployments stop working at the cutoff. For a new Azure design, evaluate Arista VeloCloud or another suitable NVA. For an existing deployment, confirm your supported configuration and any migration or expansion implications with Microsoft and the vendor before making a change. Do not assume the Azure policy determines availability in other cloud environments.
How much does VeloCloud SD-WAN cost?
There is no single public price established here for an enterprise VeloCloud deployment. Enterprise SD-WAN is generally quote-driven, and the total depends on the Edges or virtual capacity, orchestration and support entitlements, security modules, WAN circuits, and implementation work.

AWS Marketplace has listed VMware SD-WAN contract examples including a 12-month Enterprise 10 Mbps Basic Support entitlement at $310 and a 12-month Premium 1 Gbps Premier Support entitlement at $7,212. These are contract entitlements, not consumer retail prices or a universal per-branch rate. The listing also advertises savings of up to 5% for 36-month contracts. Because the listing’s pricing date and current availability are not established here, confirm the live offer and terms before budgeting.
Versa publishes its Essential, Professional, and Elite tiers, one-, three-, and five-year subscription terms, and a 2025 device-model-based capacity approach, but not public dollar prices. Other enterprise alternatives should also be priced from vendor quotes rather than inferred from a single appliance or marketplace line item.
Build a comparable three-year cost model
Ask each vendor to price the same service scope and assumptions. Include these cost categories rather than comparing only Edge hardware:
- Branch Edge hardware or virtual capacity, including any high-availability configuration.
- Orchestration or control-plane subscriptions and the support level attached to them.
- Security or SASE modules needed to meet your requirements.
- WAN underlay circuits, including any MPLS overlap while sites are migrated.
- Migration, professional services, training, and ongoing operational work.
- Contract term, renewal assumptions, and any marketplace or multi-year discount.
For a fair quote comparison, specify equivalent throughput, high availability, security scope, support response, site count, and contract term. Confirm whether the stated capacity is tied to device model, bandwidth, or another measure. A low initial appliance price can conceal a different subscription, support, or migration scope.

How should you choose between staying with VeloCloud and switching?
Use a decision sequence that separates ownership continuity from technical fit and commercial cost. This helps avoid treating a platform migration as a simple appliance swap.

- Clarify the trigger. Record whether the decision is driven by support ownership, Azure Virtual WAN’s new-deployment cutoff, a security strategy, contract renewal, or a network redesign.
- Inventory the existing environment. Document Edge types, software versions, site count, WAN links, routing and security policies, cloud paths, support terms, and the teams that operate Orchestrator.
- Set must-have requirements. Identify deployment and availability needs, application steering, routing, security integration, observability, API automation, and cloud connectivity. Separate requirements from features that are merely desirable.
- Shortlist based on the trigger. Include Arista VeloCloud for continuity; include other vendors where their operating model, Azure availability, security approach, or existing estate fits the redesign.
- Run scenario-based demonstrations. Use representative branches and application paths. Ask vendors to show provisioning, policy changes, link degradation handling, route control, monitoring, and troubleshooting relevant to your requirements.
- Validate migration and support. Get the proposed migration sequence, dependencies, ownership of implementation, rollback plan, and current support terms in writing. Do not presume a migration tool or automatic policy conversion exists.
- Compare full-term cost. Normalize throughput, HA, security, response terms, contract duration, circuits, services, and any overlapping legacy costs before deciding.
For an organization satisfied with its VeloCloud architecture, Arista is the natural first discussion because it now owns the product and publishes current administration documentation. A broader replacement evaluation makes more sense when a network redesign, security integration requirement, or commercial decision changes the problem beyond support continuity.

Will my existing VMware SD-WAN configuration transfer automatically to another vendor?
