For an AI agent that can execute untrusted code or use powerful tools, a VM or microVM generally provides a stronger isolation boundary than a container alone. A container shares the host kernel; a VM runs a separate guest kernel. Neither makes an agent safe by itself: mounted files, credentials, network access, forwarded sockets, and the agent’s permissions can still expose sensitive systems. For higher-risk work, a layered design can run restricted containers inside a VM, while keeping orchestration and secrets outside the execution environment.

What is the security difference between a VM and a container?

The central difference is the kernel boundary. A conventional container isolates processes and limits their access, but it shares the host operating system’s kernel. A VM runs a guest operating system with its own kernel. If an agent runs attacker-controlled code, that separate guest-kernel boundary can reduce the consequences of a flaw in the guest’s applications or operating system reaching the host.

Docker’s agent sandbox documentation describes a separate Linux kernel for each microVM sandbox. That is a meaningful distinction from a container sharing the host kernel, not proof that a microVM—or any other VM—is invulnerable. A VM can still be misconfigured, and information or capabilities deliberately exposed to it remain exposed.

“Container” and “sandbox” are not synonyms for one fixed security design. Some systems add controls around containers; others use a VM, microVM, or a different kernel architecture. Evaluate the specific implementation and its boundaries, not just the label.

What the boundary does—and does not—separate

  • Kernel: A typical container shares the host kernel; a VM or microVM provides a guest-kernel boundary. gVisor takes a different approach, using an application kernel rather than being simply a conventional container or VM.
  • Files: Anything made available through a mount or another sharing mechanism crosses the boundary to some degree. A direct host-workspace mount lets agent changes appear on the host.
  • Network: The sandbox can only be constrained to the extent the implementation restricts its network paths. Egress restrictions matter even when execution is isolated.
  • Credentials and services: Secrets, forwarded sockets, host services, and tool connections can give an agent authority beyond its compute sandbox.
  • Tools: Shell and file operations may be covered differently from MCP or other integrations. Confirm which operations and child processes the chosen system actually confines.

When should I choose a VM, microVM, or container for an AI agent?

Choose according to the threat boundary the task needs. A container can be appropriate when shared-kernel isolation fits the risk and the agent has tightly scoped access. Consider a VM or microVM when the agent executes untrusted code or has powerful tools and you need a separate guest-kernel boundary. For higher-risk execution, consider putting restricted containers inside a VM.

This is a risk decision, not a universal ranking of products. The available source material does not establish apples-to-apples performance or price benchmarks for these approaches, so it cannot support a general speed or cost verdict.

Approach Kernel boundary Useful fit Important qualification
Container alone Shares the host kernel Tasks whose risk is compatible with a shared-kernel boundary and tightly scoped access Limits on files, credentials, network, and tools still matter
VM or microVM Separate guest kernel; Docker documents a separate Linux kernel per microVM sandbox Higher-risk code execution where a guest-kernel boundary is desired Isolation depends on implementation and configuration; exposed resources remain reachable
Restricted containers inside a VM Guest-kernel boundary plus container restrictions Layered containment for higher-risk execution More than one layer still requires deliberate limits on workspace, network, credentials, and authority
gVisor Application-kernel approach A distinct isolation design to assess against the task and its runtime needs It should not be described as identical to a VM or a conventional container boundary

Compatibility is another decision point. Establish which operating system, runtime, and tools the agent needs, then verify that the proposed sandbox covers them. The sources describe particular implementations and do not establish that every VM, container, or sandbox supports the same operating systems or tool integrations.

How do I design a safe execution setup for an AI agent?

Start by treating the sandbox as one layer in a broader containment plan. OWASP’s DevSecOps guidance emphasizes that permission prompts are not a security boundary against a manipulated agent; isolation is. Approval prompts can still be useful for human oversight, but they do not replace restricting what the process can reach.

  1. Define the agent’s job and authority. List the code it may run, files it must read or change, tools it can call, and network destinations it needs. Remove permissions that are not required for that task.
  2. Select the execution boundary. Decide whether a shared-kernel container fits the risk or whether a VM or microVM guest-kernel boundary is warranted. For higher-risk execution, consider layering restricted containers inside a VM.
  3. Keep orchestration separate where practical. The OpenAI Agents SDK guide distinguishes the harness or control plane from sandbox compute. Keep functions such as authentication, audit, billing, approvals, and recovery in trusted infrastructure where practical, rather than handing those responsibilities to code executing in the sandbox.
  4. Limit workspace sharing. Give the agent only the files needed. A direct host-workspace mount makes edits visible on the host. Docker documents mountless and private-clone alternatives, with different access and workflow trade-offs; choose deliberately rather than assuming a mount is harmless.
  5. Constrain egress and credentials. Restrict outbound network access to what the task needs, and avoid production credentials in the sandbox. Docker documents network proxying and credential handling as features of its own sandbox model; do not assume those features exist in every VM or container setup.
  6. Check every tool path. Confirm which shell commands, child processes, file operations, MCP tools, and other integrations are actually covered by the isolation mechanism. If a tool runs outside it or can reach an unrestricted service, account for that as a separate trust boundary.
  7. Review changes and recover safely. Treat modifications to shared workspaces as untrusted until reviewed. Keep recovery and approval mechanisms outside the code-execution environment when feasible, so a compromised or misbehaving task cannot control its own oversight.

What does workspace sharing change?

A sandbox’s value can be undermined by what it is allowed to share. If an agent can edit a host directory, those edits are not contained from the host user’s workflow: the changes become visible there. That may be necessary for an agent that must work on a local repository, but it is a deliberate boundary crossing, not an incidental detail.

Choose a sharing mode based on the job

  • Direct host workspace mount: Convenient when the agent must edit the working tree in place. Docker’s documentation notes that agent edits are visible on the host, so review changes before relying on them.
  • Mountless execution: Avoids exposing a host workspace through a direct mount, but changes how the agent accesses and returns work. Docker documents this as one of its alternatives.
  • Private clone: Gives the agent a separate working copy rather than editing the host workspace directly. Docker documents this option as having its own workflow trade-offs; plan how to inspect and transfer the result.

Whatever mode you choose, scope access to the smallest useful set of files. A VM boundary does not undo the consequences of intentionally sharing a repository, a secret-bearing configuration file, or a host service with the guest.

How should I handle network access, credentials, and tools?

Isolation limits access only when the surrounding configuration limits it. OWASP recommends restricting egress and avoiding production credentials for agentic workloads. Apply those principles independently of whether execution happens in a container or a VM.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Network egress

Give the sandbox only the outbound access the task requires. Unrestricted egress can let code communicate with services outside the environment; a VM by itself does not establish which destinations the guest can contact. If the chosen platform uses a proxy or another network-control feature, verify its actual policy and scope. Docker documents proxying as part of its own sandbox model, not as a feature shared by every sandbox.

Credentials and host services

Do not place production secrets in an environment where untrusted agent code can read them. Avoid forwarding sockets or exposing host services unless necessary, and treat each such connection as authority granted to the agent. A separate guest kernel does not protect a credential that the guest has been given.

Tool coverage

Make an inventory of the agent’s tools and how each executes. A sandbox that confines shell commands may not automatically confine every file integration, MCP server, browser connection, or host-side tool. Coverage is implementation-specific; do not infer it from the word “sandbox.”

Are IDE sandboxes and approval prompts enough?

Not necessarily. VS Code documents OS-level sandboxing for covered commands and child processes, while also noting operations it does not cover and that this mechanism is not a VM or user-account boundary. That can be useful protection, but its scope should not be mistaken for a guest-kernel boundary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Permission approvals serve a different purpose from isolation. They can pause an action for review, but OWASP warns that permission prompts are not a security boundary against a manipulated agent. Use approvals for oversight and use isolation, least privilege, restricted egress, and careful sharing to constrain what execution can reach.

Similarly, gVisor is an application-kernel approach, distinct from a conventional VM. The relevant question is not whether a tool calls itself a sandbox, but which operations it isolates, what remains outside that coverage, and what resources it exposes to the agent.

What should I verify before trusting a sandbox?

Assess the actual implementation against the agent’s task and your threat model. Documentation for one product or mode does not establish the properties of another.

  • Does execution share the host kernel, use a guest kernel, or use an application-kernel design?
  • Which shell commands, child processes, filesystem operations, and tool integrations are within the boundary?
  • Does the agent edit a directly mounted host workspace, a private clone, or no shared workspace?
  • Which outbound network destinations are permitted, and how is that policy enforced?
  • Can the agent read credentials, reach forwarded sockets, or call host services?
  • Are authentication, audit, billing, approvals, and recovery handled in trusted orchestration rather than by sandboxed code?
  • Can you inspect and review the output before changes reach a trusted workspace or system?

Use documentation for the exact product, feature, and configuration being deployed. The OpenAI, Docker, OWASP, VS Code, and gVisor materials describe different layers and approaches; they are not a single interchangeable guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI agent escape a VM sandbox?

No sandbox should be treated as escape-proof. The sources establish the value of a separate guest-kernel boundary relative to a shared-kernel container, but do not provide a guarantee that a VM cannot be breached.

Does a microVM need internet access to run an agent?

That depends on the agent’s task and implementation. If it needs external services, allow only the required network paths; the existence of a microVM does not itself determine or restrict egress.

Is gVisor a VM or a container?

The cited material describes gVisor as an application-kernel approach. It is a distinct isolation design, so assess its operation coverage and boundary rather than treating it as synonymous with either a conventional VM or a host-kernel-sharing container.

Should AI agents receive production API keys inside a sandbox?

Avoid exposing production credentials to untrusted agent code. OWASP recommends avoiding production credentials; where a task needs access to a service, keep authority narrowly scoped and handle authentication through trusted infrastructure where practical.
