Vmail is a keyboard-first Gmail client that brings mail into Vim. Its published setup uses Ruby and IMAP, but those instructions are legacy: the available documentation does not establish that Vmail supports the OAuth sign-in Google now recommends and requires for Google Workspace accounts using third-party mail clients. If dependable Gmail access is your priority, verify explicit OAuth support before investing time in setup.

What is Vmail?

Vmail describes itself as a “Vim interface to Gmail.” It is a Ruby application documented to connect to Gmail over IMAP and display mail inside Vim. The README describes a keyboard-oriented workflow: browse a message list, open messages in Vim split windows, select mailboxes, search, and compose, reply, reply all, or forward using key commands. It says the default view starts with the latest 100 inbox messages and allows more to be loaded. These are documented behaviors, not independently verified current features.

The appeal is a familiar one for Vim users: read and write email in an editor-centered environment, using keyboard commands rather than a conventional graphical interface. Vmail is not Gmail itself, and its use of IMAP does not by itself determine how it authenticates.

Does Vmail still work with Gmail?

That is not established by the available project documentation. The README describes a username-and-password configuration, with an option to omit the password and enter it at startup. It does not document OAuth support. Google, meanwhile, documents OAuth 2.0 for third-party clients connecting through Gmail’s mail protocols. The gap between those two facts means Vmail’s current ability to sign in cannot be confirmed from the published setup material.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For Google Workspace accounts, the policy change is explicit: Google says that since May 1, 2025, Workspace accounts no longer support less secure apps or third-party apps and devices that ask users to sign in with their Google username and password. Google recommends OAuth-capable clients. That statement is specifically about Workspace accounts; it should not be generalized into a claim that every Gmail account or every IMAP client behaves identically.

Google documents standard IMAP, POP, and SMTP access for non-Gmail clients. Its server settings include IMAP at imap.gmail.com:993 with SSL, and SMTP with TLS; ports 465 and 587 are listed for SSL/TLS use. Google’s Gmail API documentation also explains OAuth credentials, user authorization, and access and refresh tokens for applications using that API. Neither the protocol documentation nor the API guide confirms that Vmail implements OAuth or uses the Gmail API.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Practical takeaway: treat Vmail’s compatibility with current Google sign-in as unverified, not as confirmed working or confirmed broken. If you need an account you can rely on, choose a client whose documentation explicitly describes OAuth support for Gmail, or confirm that Vmail has added it before configuring your account.

What does Vmail’s documented setup require?

The README lists a Gmail account, Vim, Ruby, SQLite, and a Unix environment. It also mentions a text-mode browser for viewing HTML mail. Its development baseline refers to Vim 7.3 and Ruby 1.9.2; these are historical documentation details, not verified modern minimum requirements.

The documented installation command is gem install vmail, followed by configuration in a YAML file named .vmailrc. The README’s example includes a username and password, though it says the password can instead be omitted so Vmail prompts at startup. Because that setup predates current Google Workspace password-only access restrictions and does not document OAuth, it should not be treated as a reliable current Gmail configuration.

These instructions explain the historical shape of installation, but they do not establish that the gem, dependencies, or login flow work on a modern system. Installing the package is not evidence that authentication will succeed.

What do the version and maintenance records show?

A FreeBSD ports record lists rubygem-vmail version 2.9.8_3 and records a port update dated May 28, 2024. This shows downstream packaging activity on the port record; it does not prove that the upstream project released matching code, remains actively maintained, or supports OAuth. The available README mirror contains older dependency guidance, and the current upstream release and maintenance state are not established by the sources cited here.

Should you try Vmail?

Vmail may be of interest if you specifically want a Vim-centered mail workflow and are comfortable investigating an older Ruby application. Before connecting a real Gmail account, check for current project documentation or code that explicitly describes OAuth-based Gmail authentication. Do not assume that changing server settings or entering an app password will resolve a login failure: the available evidence does not document a supported current authentication path.

For a comparison with another terminal mail client, focus on whether it explicitly supports Gmail OAuth, which protocols and providers it supports, its current release and maintenance evidence, its dependencies and setup burden, and how well its editing workflow fits your Vim habits. The evidence available for Vmail alone is not enough to make a balanced feature comparison with alternatives.
