To install new audio visuals in VLC on Windows 11, use VLC’s built-in projectM integration and point it to a compatible preset collection. Download and extract the collection without breaking its .milk files or texture folders, set the preset directory under Tools > Preferences > All > Audio > Visualizations > projectM, save, restart VLC if necessary, and then select Audio > Visualizations > projectM while music is playing.
Preset files alone cannot add projectM to a VLC build that lacks the projectM module. If projectM is absent from the visualization menu, update or reinstall VLC from VideoLAN before troubleshooting the preset path.

The first group works from components already included in VLC. projectM is different: VLC needs its projectM renderer/module, and the visual designs come from compatible preset files. Installing a random visualizer DLL or copying a single preset does not supply that renderer.

What do I need before installing projectM presets?
Prepare these items before changing VLC’s settings:
- A Windows 11 installation and a current VLC Windows package. VideoLAN’s Windows page lists VLC 3.0.23 packages, including installer, archive, MSI and ARM64 builds; package listings can change, so verify the version shown when you download.
- An audio file or stream to test with. The visualization menu is relevant while audio is playing.
- A projectM preset collection intended for VLC or compatible projectM software.
- Enough access to read the folder where you extract presets. Writing under
C:Program Filescan trigger a Windows administrator prompt.
Use the normal VLC installation for your Windows edition. VLC is listed as running through the last version of Windows 11, but the exact package you see may differ as VideoLAN publishes updates.
How do I download and extract a projectM preset collection?
Download a collection rather than a plug-in DLL
Choose a collection that contains projectM or MilkDrop-style preset files and any texture assets it requires. The collection supplies visual designs; it does not replace VLC’s projectM module. A standalone projectM application and an arbitrary Winamp or MilkDrop DLL are separate products and are not dependable VLC installation methods.

Use Windows’ Extract All command or an archive utility, then inspect the extracted result. Preserve the directory that contains the .milk files together with its texture folders and other files. Do not copy only a few presets out of the archive if doing so would separate them from required textures.
Many archives create an extra top-level folder. The path you eventually enter in VLC must point to the directory that actually contains the extracted preset files, not merely to the folder that contains another nested folder.
Where should I store the extracted presets?
Older Windows directions commonly place a folder named presets_milkdrop under VLC’s installation directory. A user-owned folder is usually easier to maintain, provided you explicitly select it in VLC’s projectM settings.

There is no benefit to placing a preset collection in both locations. Pick one, keep its internal structure intact, and configure VLC to use it.

How do I set the projectM preset path in VLC?
The path control is hidden in VLC’s advanced preferences. Follow this sequence:
- Open VLC and press Ctrl+P, or choose Tools > Preferences.
- At the bottom-left of the Preferences window, change Show settings from Simple to All.
- In the left navigation tree, open Audio, then Visualizations, then projectM.
- Find projectM preset path. Enter or browse to the directory that contains the extracted
.milkpresets and their associated texture folders. - Click Save.
- Close and reopen VLC if the new collection is not reflected immediately. Restarting causes VLC to reload the visualization configuration.
When browsing for the path, select the folder itself rather than an individual .milk file. If the archive produced a nested directory, continue into that directory until you can see the preset files and texture folders.
How do I activate the new visuals?
- Open an audio file or start an audio stream and let it play.
- Open Audio > Visualizations.
- Select projectM.
VLC should now render projectM’s presets while the audio plays. The other entries in the same menu remain available, so you can switch to Spectrometer, Scope, Spectrum, VU Meter, Goom or 3D Spectrum without changing the preset path.
Why is projectM missing from VLC’s Audio menu?
If Audio > Visualizations contains the built-in choices but no projectM entry, the problem is not the preset directory. Preset files cannot create a missing VLC module.
Check the VLC build first
Install the current Windows build offered by VideoLAN, then reopen VLC and inspect the visualization menu again. If you used an archive or a customized package, reinstalling with an official Windows package can restore components that were omitted from that build.
Do not confuse a separate application with VLC integration
A standalone projectM program can display presets by itself, but that does not add projectM to VLC. Likewise, copying a generic Winamp or MilkDrop DLL into a VLC folder is not a supported way to supply VLC’s projectM integration.
Confirm that you are testing during audio playback
The documented visualization choices are selected while audio is playing. Start playback before judging whether the menu is available or whether a visualizer is responding.

Why does projectM appear but show no new presets?
When projectM is present but the expected designs do not appear, work through the path and folder checks rather than reinstalling the entire player.

Open the folder you entered in projectM preset path. It should contain the extracted preset files or the collection’s expected preset directory. If you selected a parent folder that only contains another folder, edit the setting and point it at the deeper directory.
Keep texture folders beside the presets
Some designs depend on texture assets. Moving only the .milk files can leave a preset incomplete even though VLC can read the file name. Re-extract the original collection and preserve its relative folders.
Save and restart
Click Save in Preferences. If the old behavior remains, exit VLC completely and launch it again before testing projectM. A restart is especially important after changing from the default or legacy location to a new user-owned folder.
Check Windows access
If the collection is under C:Program Files, Windows may prevent a normal account from writing or modifying it. Extracting to Documents avoids that maintenance hurdle; VLC only needs to be able to read the configured directory.

No. VLC’s .lua add-ons use a separate extension mechanism. Those files are copied into the VLC program-files directory and normally require a VLC restart before they are recognized.
That procedure is not the normal method for adding projectM visual designs. A projectM collection belongs in the preset directory configured under Audio > Visualizations > projectM; copying a preset into a Lua extension folder will not make it appear in the projectM menu.

Can I use a MilkDrop or Winamp DLL directly in VLC?
Not reliably. VLC requires its own projectM integration and presets compatible with that integration. A DLL designed for another host application does not automatically become a VLC visualization module when copied into the VLC directory.
If you specifically want a separate MilkDrop-style program, MilkDrop 3 is advertised as a Windows 11-compatible standalone visualizer with more than 500 visuals and a paid PRO edition. Treat it as an alternative application when VLC’s projectM module is unavailable, not as a VLC plug-in.

How do VLC updates affect installed presets?
Preset files stored under VLC’s program directory can be affected when VLC is updated, and that location may require administrator access each time you modify it. A folder in your Documents directory is easier to preserve across updates because it is outside the VLC installation tree.
If you move a collection, open advanced Preferences afterward and change projectM preset path to the new location. Save the setting and restart VLC if projectM still references the old directory.
What should I check when installation still fails?
- ProjectM is absent from the menu: update or reinstall VLC; presets cannot supply the missing module.
- ProjectM is listed but shows no designs: verify that the configured path reaches the folder containing the extracted presets.
- Presets load incompletely: restore the collection’s texture folders and relative directory structure.
- Windows blocks extraction or editing: use a user-owned Documents folder instead of Program Files.
- Changes seem ignored: click Save, close VLC, relaunch it, start audio playback and select projectM again.
- A DLL installation guide conflicts with VLC: remove that assumption; VLC needs its own projectM integration, not an arbitrary plug-in DLL.
Does VLC need to be running as administrator?
No administrator step is required when presets are kept in a user-owned folder and VLC can read that directory. Administrator permission is mainly an issue when extracting or editing files under C:Program FilesVideoLANVLCVisualizations.
If you choose the legacy Program Files location, approve the Windows prompt only for the file operation you intend to perform, then configure VLC’s preset path to the resulting folder.
How can I confirm that the correct VLC package is installed?
VideoLAN’s Windows download page lists multiple package formats, including installer, archive, MSI and ARM64 options, and currently identifies version 3.0.23 in the referenced page capture. Check the version and package type shown at download time because VideoLAN’s listings can change. After installation, open VLC’s About information to confirm which build you are testing before diagnosing a missing module.
