Visual Crossing is a capable choice when one weather API must serve historical records, current conditions, forecasts, and statistical data. Its Timeline API uses one endpoint for date-range history and location-based forecasts, accepts addresses or coordinates, and returns JSON or CSV. The main cautions are equally important: historical depth varies by place and weather element, forecast availability is location-dependent, plan limits differ sharply, and the Legacy Weather API is scheduled for retirement on December 31, 2026. For new projects, Timeline is the safer starting point; existing legacy integrations should be inventoried and moved before the retirement date.

What is Visual Crossing Weather API?

Visual Crossing Weather API is a hosted REST service for developers who need weather data inside applications, dashboards, data pipelines, spreadsheets, or analytical models. The Timeline API is the product’s central interface. Instead of learning separate endpoints for history and forecasts, you send a location and optional date range to one base URL and receive the period available for that request.

The service supports historical weather, current conditions, future forecasts, historical forecasts, and statistical weather data. Locations can be an address, ZIP code, city, or latitude/longitude. Responses are available as JSON for application code and CSV for spreadsheet, ETL, and bulk-processing workflows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Visual Crossing says its engine combines reports from more than 100,000 weather stations, satellites, and high-resolution radar. That is a vendor description, not an independent benchmark; production teams should validate the fields and coverage they need for their own locations.

Why use one Timeline endpoint for history and forecasts?

A single endpoint simplifies client code and makes it easier to build features that move across time, such as comparing last year’s weather with next week’s forecast. Your application can keep the same authentication, location format, response parser, and export logic while changing the requested dates.

  • Historical analysis: Supply a start and end date to request a defined period.
  • Current conditions: Request the location without a historical range and read the current-period fields returned.
  • Forecasting: Request a future period or the forecast URL pattern shown in the documentation.
  • Historical forecasts: Use the Timeline data types available for evaluating prior forecast periods.
  • Statistical work: Request the weather elements and aggregation appropriate to your analysis.

The returned JSON includes fields such as a resolved address, timezone, daily values, and individual weather elements. That metadata is useful for checking that the service interpreted a user-entered place as intended before you store or display the measurements.

How do I call the Visual Crossing Timeline API?

The documented base endpoint is:

https://weather.visualcrossing.com/VisualCrossingWebServices/rest/services/timeline/

A request supplies a location after the final slash. Date parameters can define a historical range, while an API key and options such as units and response format control authentication and output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
https://weather.visualcrossing.com/VisualCrossingWebServices/rest/services/timeline/LOCATION?key=YOUR_API_KEY&unitGroup=us&contentType=json

URL-encode addresses and other user-entered locations in your application. Keep the key on a server or in a protected job environment rather than exposing it in browser code, public repositories, or downloadable spreadsheets.

What does a basic forecast request look like?

The official examples include a 15-day forecast request. The exact forecast period returned depends on the requested location and the available model and source data, so treat the response’s dates as authoritative rather than assuming every location always returns the same horizon.

https://weather.visualcrossing.com/VisualCrossingWebServices/rest/services/timeline/London?key=YOUR_API_KEY&contentType=json

How do I request the last seven days by hour?

A relative range can be used for recent hourly data. The response contains the dates and hourly values that are available for the location.

https://weather.visualcrossing.com/VisualCrossingWebServices/rest/services/timeline/London/last7days?key=YOUR_API_KEY&include=hours&contentType=json

How do I request a fixed historical range?

Use date1 and date2 for a reproducible period. This is preferable for scheduled jobs because the same request continues to describe the same calendar interval.

Check the returned timezone and resolved address before joining records from multiple locations. A date boundary interpreted in the station’s local timezone can otherwise shift a daily aggregation by one calendar day.

How do I get started step by step?

  1. Create an account and API key. The product page advertises a free allowance of 1,000 weather records per day without a credit card. Confirm the allowance and any rate limits in your current account because plan terms can change.
  2. Choose a canonical location format. Use latitude/longitude when you already have coordinates; use a city, ZIP code, or address when your product starts with human-entered places.
  3. Run a query in the site’s query builder. The builder and sample URLs let you inspect the fields returned before writing a parser.
  4. Select JSON or CSV. JSON is usually easier for application services; CSV is convenient for spreadsheet imports, Power Query, and batch data workflows.
  5. Set the date range and elements. Keep requests narrow enough for your plan’s record and query limits, and request only the temporal resolution and weather elements your feature needs.
  6. Validate metadata. Log the resolved address, timezone, requested dates, and response status. Reject or review a result when geocoding resolves to an unintended place.
  7. Add retries and monitoring. Record API errors, response latency, quota usage, and missing fields so a failed update does not silently become a data gap.

How far back does Visual Crossing historical data go?

The product page advertises more than 50 years of historical weather coverage. That is an archive-level statement, not a guarantee that every location has 50 complete years for every element and resolution. The official FAQ says availability differs by location, date, weather element, source, and resolution.

For a long-term climate or business analysis, test representative locations before committing to a schema. A station may have daily temperature records for a long period but sparse hourly precipitation, wind, or derived fields. Save the exact query and inspect missing values rather than filling gaps automatically.

  • Location: Urban areas and well-observed regions may have denser records than remote sites.
  • Element: Temperature, precipitation, wind, solar, and derived indicators can have different histories.
  • Resolution: Daily history may extend further than hourly history.
  • Source: Blended station, satellite, and radar inputs can change the available period and granularity.

How long is the forecast?

The product page advertises a global 15-day forecast. The FAQ qualifies that developers should rely on the forecast period returned for the requested location because model and source availability varies. Design your UI and database around the dates in the response, not a hard-coded promise that every call will contain 15 days.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For operational decisions, retain the retrieval timestamp and the forecast issue period. This lets you distinguish a newly issued forecast from an older cached result when evaluating changes over time.

How reliable and complete is the weather data?

Visual Crossing’s stated input network is broad, but no independent uptime, accuracy, or latency benchmark is available here. Treat “more than 100,000 weather stations, satellites, and high-resolution radar” as a vendor claim and perform project-specific checks.

What should you validate before launch?

  • Compare several returned days with a trusted local source for the exact locations you serve.
  • Check missing-value rates for every weather element your calculations require.
  • Verify that units, timezone, and daylight-saving transitions are handled consistently.
  • Test both dense urban locations and edge cases such as rural coordinates or offshore points.
  • Confirm that your parser tolerates optional fields and changes in the forecast period.

These checks do not prove universal accuracy; they reveal whether the available data is suitable for your product’s geography, time range, and decision threshold.

What are the Visual Crossing plans and limits?

The published comparison lists four plan families. It does not provide a universal monthly price in the supplied material, so obtain a current quote or account-specific price before budgeting. The operational limits below are the values shown in the comparison table accessed October 25, 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Plan Records Records per query Locations per query Concurrency Published uptime
Professional 10,000,000 per month 10,000 100 1 99.9%
Metered Unlimited, subject to plan terms 25,000 5 Unlimited 99.9%
Corporate Unlimited 25,000 1,000 10 99.9%
Enterprise Custom Custom Custom Custom Greater than 99.9%

“Unlimited” in the table is still governed by the applicable plan terms; it should not be interpreted as an absence of fair-use, billing, or technical controls. Professional’s 10,000,000-record figure is a monthly allowance, while the per-query and concurrency limits determine how quickly a workload can consume it.

What licensing and attribution rules apply?

The published comparison marks commercial use as supported across Professional, Metered, Corporate, and Enterprise. It also says Pay-as-you-go and Pro users must prominently display “Weather Data Provided by Visual Crossing” with a clickable link. Treat this as a product requirement, not optional marketing copy, and verify the current wording and plan scope in your account agreement because licensing terms can change.

For a public dashboard, place the attribution near the weather values or in an always-visible data-source area. For an internal pipeline, document where the attribution requirement is satisfied if the output is later exposed to customers.

Do I need to migrate from the Legacy Weather API?

Yes, if your integration uses the Legacy Weather API. Visual Crossing’s legacy documentation schedules retirement for December 31, 2026 and directs new development to Timeline. Endpoints containing /forecast, /history, or /historysummary should be treated as migration candidates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should a migration be planned?

  1. Inventory calls. Search source code, scheduled jobs, notebooks, and vendor connectors for every legacy URL.
  2. Map outputs. Record which legacy fields, units, resolutions, and date semantics each consumer expects.
  3. Build a Timeline equivalent. Use the same location and date ranges first, then select the required elements and output format.
  4. Run both paths temporarily. Compare overlapping dates, timezone handling, missing values, and aggregate calculations.
  5. Update downstream contracts. Adjust parsers, schemas, dashboards, tests, and attribution text for Timeline’s response.
  6. Cut over before the deadline. Keep rollback data and logs, but do not schedule a first migration attempt near December 31, 2026.

Timeline is described as the recommended replacement for all new development. A compatibility layer may reduce immediate code changes, but it does not remove the retirement risk; the legacy endpoint still needs a final removal date in your delivery plan.

Which developers and workloads fit Visual Crossing best?

Visual Crossing is a strong fit when your application benefits from a common request model across time periods and needs both machine-readable and spreadsheet-friendly output.

How should Visual Crossing be compared with another weather API?

Do not compare providers on archive years or forecast days alone. Use the dimensions that determine whether your application can operate reliably and legally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Historical depth and element availability: Test your exact locations, elements, and resolution.
  • Forecast horizon and model transparency: Check the dates actually returned and what metadata is exposed.
  • API shape and formats: Compare authentication, date syntax, JSON structure, CSV behavior, and SDK or connector support.
  • Location resolution: Verify address, ZIP, city, and coordinate handling, including timezone output.
  • Limits: Compare records, records per query, locations per query, and concurrent requests against your peak workload.
  • Price model: Distinguish monthly allowances, metered usage, custom enterprise terms, and any overage rules.
  • Licensing: Check commercial-use rights and visible attribution requirements before launch.
  • Migration and support posture: Prefer a current endpoint with clear documentation and a realistic deprecation policy.

What common problems occur, and how can you fix them?

The response has fewer forecast days than expected

Use the dates returned for the requested location. Forecast model and source availability vary, so avoid padding the missing days with invented values; show the available period or adjust the product’s expectation.

Historical fields are missing

Check whether the requested element and resolution exist for that location and date range. Narrow the range, try a supported resolution, or redesign the calculation to tolerate missing observations instead of treating an empty field as zero.

The wrong place was resolved

Inspect the response’s resolved address and timezone. Prefer coordinates for ambiguous names, URL-encode addresses, and require confirmation when a user-entered place resolves outside the expected region.

Requests hit plan limits

Measure records per query, locations per query, and concurrent calls separately. Batch within the published limits, cache stable historical results, schedule large backfills, and choose a plan whose concurrency and query sizes match your peak workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A legacy call still works but migration is blocked

Keep the old call only as a temporary comparison while implementing Timeline. The scheduled retirement date is December 31, 2026, so unresolved field mappings should be tracked as release blockers rather than deferred indefinitely.

Is Visual Crossing worth choosing for a new project?

Choose it when a unified historical-and-forecast API, broad location input, JSON/CSV flexibility, and listed developer integrations outweigh the need for a provider-specific model or independently verified performance benchmark. Timeline reduces endpoint sprawl and can support everything from a small prototype to scheduled data extraction, provided you design around the actual plan limits.

Do not choose it solely because “more than 50 years” or “15 days” appears on a product page. Validate the exact historical elements, forecast period, timezone behavior, quota, and attribution obligations for your application. For existing legacy users, migration is not optional planning: the documented December 31, 2026 retirement makes Timeline the practical path forward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I store Visual Crossing responses and serve them from a cache?

A cache can reduce repeated requests and help protect quotas, especially for historical ranges that do not change. Set an explicit refresh policy for forecasts, retain the retrieval time, and review your plan terms before using cached data in a customer-facing service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the purpose of the resolved address and timezone fields?

They let you verify geocoding and interpret date boundaries correctly. Store them with the query so a later analyst can distinguish a location change from a genuine weather change.

How can I estimate record usage before selecting a plan?

Multiply locations by requested days, hours, and weather elements, then account for refresh frequency and retries. Compare that estimate with both the plan’s monthly allowance and its per-query, location, and concurrency limits; the largest constraint determines your batching design.

Should a production system request JSON or CSV?

Use JSON when your service needs nested daily and hourly objects or immediate field-level handling. Use CSV for bulk exports, spreadsheet users, and simple tabular loads, while keeping the same date, location, and validation checks.
