A video game becomes a “masterpiece” in criticism when a reviewer can show that its major parts work together exceptionally well for the experience the developers intended. That judgment is argued, edited and tied to a specific version of the game; it is not a universal certificate or a mathematical total of graphics, story, length and frame rate. IGN uses Masterpiece for its 10/10 top recommendation while noting that “There’s no such thing as a truly perfect game”; Video Games Chronicle (VGC) reserves five stars for exceptionally designed, memorable games that raise the bar or excel within their genre. The useful question is therefore not whether a game is flawless, but whether its design decisions deliver an unusually coherent, memorable and influential experience.
What does “masterpiece” mean in game criticism?
It means an outlet’s highest-level critical verdict, supported by reasons in the review. Different publications define that level differently, so a label should never be treated as an objective class shared by every critic.
IGN’s review-practices statement calls a 10/10 “Masterpiece” its highest recommendation and explicitly rejects literal perfection. VGC’s policy describes five stars as “exceptionally designed, memorable games” that either raise the bar or represent the best of their genre. The label describes the strength of an argument about a particular release, not a promise that every player will enjoy it.

Critics usually reach that verdict by asking whether the game’s mechanics, presentation and goals reinforce one another. A title can have beautiful art or a clever story yet fall short if its central play is repetitive, its pacing undermines its themes, or technical problems block the experience it promises. Conversely, a game can contain rough edges and still earn the highest recommendation when those weaknesses do not damage its core achievement.

How do critics judge gameplay and moment-to-moment design?
They examine what the player does every second, how clearly the game communicates those possibilities, and whether encounters and spaces develop the game’s ideas. BAFTA’s 2027 Game Design rules provide a useful checklist, although they are award criteria rather than a universal review formula.
Controls and expressive mechanics
Reviewers look for controls that respond predictably and give the player meaningful choices. A strong system lets players understand why an action succeeded or failed, then apply that knowledge to a new situation. “Innovation” can mean a genuinely new interaction, but it can also mean an unusually effective combination of familiar mechanics.
Level and world structure
Spaces should do more than connect objectives. Critics consider whether layouts teach mechanics, create readable risks, support exploration and make progress feel earned. Backtracking, open-world activities or linear set pieces are not automatically good or bad; their value depends on how well they serve the intended experience.
Pacing and second-to-second decisions
BAFTA’s design category names pacing and second-to-second design alongside mechanics, controls and world structure. A masterpiece keeps attention by varying pressure, discovery and recovery without losing its identity. Long quiet passages can be purposeful in a reflective game, while the same pauses may be damaging in a title built around constant urgency.
These questions explain why a high score is not simply an average of “combat,” “maps” and “controls.” IGN and VGC both reject adding fixed feature points to produce a final number; the reviewer’s task is to explain how the parts function together.
Why do purpose and integration matter?
Critics first identify what the developers appear to be trying to achieve, then judge how successfully the finished game achieves it. VGC’s policy explicitly asks what the developers intended, whether they accomplished it and whether the result is fun; originality is another consideration.

Integration is the practical result of that aims-based approach. In an integrated game, mechanics express the same priorities as the story, visual language, audio and progression. A survival game that makes scarcity meaningful through resource systems, level design and sound is more coherent than one that merely describes scarcity in dialogue. This is an editorial synthesis of aims-based criticism, not an industry-wide scoring category.

Intent does not excuse poor execution. A deliberately difficult game still needs fair communication; a slow narrative game still needs purposeful scenes. Critics can recognize an ambitious aim while explaining where the implementation fails.
Which artistic and technical elements count?
Visual art, animation, audio, music, narrative and technology matter when they strengthen the game’s intended experience. BAFTA treats Visual Art, Audio Achievement, Narrative, Animation and Technical Achievement as distinct craft areas in its awards rules, while a review considers how those crafts operate inside the whole game.
Story and narrative
BAFTA’s Narrative category focuses on a story that captivates and engages. That does not mean every masterpiece must be story-driven. A puzzle, strategy or competitive game may have minimal plot and still achieve exceptional clarity, tension or systemic depth. For a narrative-heavy title, critics can assess character arcs, dialogue, structure, themes and whether interactive choices support the story rather than interrupt it.
Visuals, animation and audio
Art direction is broader than resolution. A stylized game can use color, composition and animation more purposefully than a photorealistic game with expensive assets but little coherence. Audio Achievement includes sound, dialogue and music as an overall audio experience; critics ask whether cues communicate danger, actions feel weighty and music shapes mood without overwhelming play.

Technical achievement includes the systems that make the intended experience possible, but raw resolution, frame rate and hours of content do not measure quality by themselves. Performance faults matter most when they obscure information, break progression, cause lost input or otherwise undermine the game’s central promise. A minor visual glitch that leaves play intact is a different kind of flaw from a crash that prevents completion.

Does originality matter more than execution?
Originality can strengthen a masterpiece verdict, but it is not a requirement that every top-rated game invent a genre. IGN’s Masterpiece description anticipates influence on future design, and Push Square’s 10/10 language emphasizes advancing the medium. VGC’s highest rating also allows an exceptional genre tentpole that executes familiar ideas at an extraordinary level.
That distinction separates a 9/10 from a publication’s highest label without implying that every 9 is merely “almost great.” Push Square’s 9/10 description presents superb execution as highly recommendable even when a game does not chart new territory. A critic should write that a game may influence future design when the evidence is an assessment of potential; claiming that it already changed the next generation requires later evidence.
How many flaws can a masterpiece have?
There is no official severity formula. The useful test is whether a flaw damages the game’s defining promise.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Core-breaking flaw: crashes, unreadable controls, inaccessible progression or severe balance problems that prevent the central experience from working.
- Significant compromise: a repetitive activity, uneven pacing or weak secondary system that reduces range but leaves the main design intact.
- Minor imperfection: a visual blemish, awkward menu or small inconsistency that most players can work around.
This is an interpretive comparison, not a published scoring rubric. IGN and VGC both acknowledge that a top game need not be flawless. The review should identify the flaw, explain who encounters it and say whether it changes the overall recommendation instead of hiding it behind a perfect-looking number.
Why do critics’ top scores use different labels?
Highest scores overlap in prestige but are not interchangeable definitions. Each outlet publishes its own scale and editorial meaning.
| Outlet | Highest label | What it signifies | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| IGN | 10/10 — Masterpiece | Highest recommendation; an unusually complete achievement | IGN says no game is literally perfect and does not add fixed feature scores |
| GameSpot | 10/10 — Essential | A game considered essential to experience | The review’s prose supplies context for personal fit |
| Video Games Chronicle | Five stars — Outstanding | Exceptionally designed, memorable, bar-raising or genre-defining work | “The score is only a guideline” |
| Push Square | 10/10 | Language associated with advancing the medium | A 9/10 can still describe superb execution without major innovation |
A score is therefore a compressed signal, not a portable definition. Read the outlet’s scale description and the review’s explanation before comparing numbers from different publications.

What do Metacritic scores and awards actually tell you?
Metacritic answers a reception question: how strongly a set of publications reviewed a game. Its Metascore is a weighted aggregation of publication scores converted to 0–100, and Metacritic says it does not invent numerical scores for reviews that did not publish one. That makes the number evidence of aggregated critical reception, not proof of objective greatness.

The published requirement is a score of at least 90 from at least 15 publications, according to Metacritic’s award explanation. It should not be confused with an outlet’s 10/10, an IGN Masterpiece, or a user score.
Awards answer yet another question. The 2027 BAFTA Games Awards rules name a Best Game award across genres and separate craft awards; that year’s Best Game eligibility excludes remakes and downloadable content. BAFTA directs voters to use “the single criteria of Excellence.” Those are 2027 rules for an award vote, not timeless instructions for every critic.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why do version, platform and timing change a verdict?
A review is attached to a platform, release state and date. This is especially important for live-service games that receive patches, expansions and balance changes after launch.
VGC identifies the reviewed platform and release status and normally leaves a launch review unchanged. IGN allows a rare new review when substantial changes make the original obsolete and there is continuing interest. Two current assessments can therefore describe different versions without contradicting one another.
When reading a high score, check whether it covers a console or PC edition, a launch build or a later update, and whether downloadable content is included. A recommendation may remain valid for the reviewed version while failing to describe a substantially rebuilt game.

What does God of War (2018) show about the criteria?
IGN lists God of War among its Masterpiece games. The PlayStation US listing identifies the 2018 release as a Sony Interactive Entertainment title for PS4, dated April 20, 2018; this is the 2018 game, not God of War Ragnarök.
Used as an example, the title illustrates how a critic can discuss integration rather than count isolated features. A review can examine how combat, camera placement, exploration, character relationships, visual direction and sound support the intended experience, then acknowledge any weaknesses that do not erase that achievement. The point is not that every player must agree with IGN, but that the label is backed by a specific editorial argument about a specific release. IGN’s published policy is available at its review-practices page.
How can you decide whether a masterpiece label fits your taste?
Use the written argument as a decision tool instead of treating the score as a command to buy or play.
Recommended Free Tools
- Identify the game’s aim. Is it pursuing tactical depth, emotional storytelling, discovery, competition, atmosphere or something else?
- Find the design decisions that deliver that aim. Look for concrete discussion of mechanics, encounters, pacing, controls, spaces and progression.
- Separate craft from integration. Note whether art, audio, narrative and technology reinforce play or merely look impressive in isolation.
- List persistent flaws. Decide whether they block the central promise or are compromises you can tolerate.
- Check originality claims. Treat predicted influence as a critic’s expectation, not an established historical fact.
- Verify context. Confirm platform, edition, release status and review date, especially for evolving games.
- Compare the argument with your priorities. A game can deserve an outlet’s highest label while being a poor fit for your preferred genre, pace or control style.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a game be a masterpiece if it belongs to a niche genre?
Yes. VGC’s highest rating explicitly allows a game to excel within its genre, so broad popularity is not a prerequisite. The relevant question is whether the game realizes its chosen form at an exceptional level.
Are Metacritic user scores included in the Metascore?
No. The Metascore aggregates eligible publication reviews; user ratings are displayed separately and answer a different question about audience reaction. A large gap between the two signals disagreement, not a calculation error.
Should I treat a 10/10 from two outlets as the same recommendation?
No. One outlet’s 10 may mean “Masterpiece,” another’s “Essential,” and their written standards can differ. Read each scale description and check the reviewed platform and version before drawing a comparison.
Why can an old review still matter after years of patches?
It preserves an assessment of the release state and design context at the time it was written. For an evolving game, pair it with a later update or re-review so you know which version the praise and criticisms describe.
