Video-game award ballots are not one ranking repeated dozens of times. Game of the Year (or BAFTA’s Best Game and the Golden Joysticks’ Ultimate Game of the Year) judges the complete experience. Other trophies isolate a craft, compare a genre, recognize a platform or audience, reward ongoing support, or celebrate a person, team, adaptation or future release.

That is why Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 won the overall prize at The Game Awards, BAFTA, D.I.C.E. and the Golden Joysticks in the 2025–26 season, yet other games won specialist awards for music, animation, technical work, design, accessibility and live support. The useful question is not “Which game won the most?” but “What did this category measure, and who voted?”

What does Game of the Year actually mean?

It is the broadest competitive award on the ballot: the judges’ or voters’ choice for the strongest complete game in that eligibility period, regardless of genre. It is not automatically the best-written, best-looking or most technically ambitious title.

Show Overall category 2025–26 winner What the category covers
The Game Awards (Los Angeles) Game of the Year Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 The principal overall award for a completed game from the eligibility year
BAFTA Games Awards (London) Best Game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 “The best game of the year, across all genres”
D.I.C.E. Awards (Las Vegas) Game of the Year Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Top peer-voted honor after a five-finalist panel
Golden Joystick Awards (London) Ultimate Game of the Year Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Overall prize decided by the largely public vote

An overall winner can also win craft or genre categories. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 won nine trophies at The Game Awards 2025, including direction, narrative, art direction, score and music, performance, independent game, debut indie game and RPG. That overlap does not make those prizes synonyms: each still asks a narrower question.

What is the difference between Game of the Year and Best Game Direction?

Game of the Year evaluates the finished work as a whole. Best Game Direction (The Game Awards) and Outstanding Achievement in Game Direction (D.I.C.E.) recognize the creative leadership that unifies the experience—vision, priorities, pacing and the way its parts work together.

Direction is the closest craft category to an overall award, so the same title often wins both, but it is still a discipline award. A game can be widely admired overall while another has the clearest directorial achievement.

How do narrative, art, animation, audio and performance prizes differ?

These awards separate contributions that players experience together. A story prize is not a performance prize; music is not sound design; animation is not art direction.

Narrative, story and storytelling

BAFTA’s Narrative award recognizes “the best story or narrative that captivates and engages the player.” The Game Awards calls its category Best Narrative, while D.I.C.E. uses Outstanding Achievement in Story. In 2025–26, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 won the narrative prizes at The Game Awards and the Golden Joysticks, and D.I.C.E.’s story award; BAFTA’s Narrative winner was Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. That split demonstrates that Best Game and Best Narrative measure different accomplishments.

Art direction and artistic achievement

Art categories assess the visual language of a game: environments, characters, lighting, effects, composition and consistency. BAFTA defines Artistic Achievement as exceptional visual art across all genres. BAFTA’s 2026 winner was Death Stranding 2: On the Beach; The Game Awards, D.I.C.E. and the Golden Joysticks awarded their corresponding 2025–26 visual prizes to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

Animation

Animation covers how movement brings a game to life: player-controlled characters, non-player characters, facial work, cinematics, ambient motion, style, fluidity and responsiveness. BAFTA’s 2026 Animation winner was Dispatch, while D.I.C.E. selected South of Midnight. A game can therefore win animation without winning art direction.

Audio design versus score and music

Audio design concerns the application of sound, dialogue and music to create an interactive audio experience: effects, spatial cues, mix and implementation. Score and music focuses on original composition and the creative use of licensed tracks throughout the game.

Award area 2025–26 examples What voters are isolating
Audio design / Audio Achievement Battlefield 6 (The Game Awards); Dispatch (BAFTA) Sound effects, dialogue, mix and interactive implementation
Score, music or soundtrack Lorien Testard, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (The Game Awards); Ghost of Yōtei (BAFTA and D.I.C.E.) Original composition and use of music across the game

Performance and character

BAFTA separates Performer in a Leading Role from Performer in a Supporting Role and considers voice work through motion capture. The Game Awards has one Best Performance category. The Golden Joysticks split lead and supporting performance, while D.I.C.E.’s Outstanding Achievement in Character combines a named character’s writing and performance.

Jennifer English’s performance as Maelle in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 won The Game Awards’ Best Performance, BAFTA’s leading-role award and the Golden Joysticks’ Best Lead Performer. Jeffrey Wright won BAFTA’s supporting award for Dispatch; Ben Starr won the Golden Joysticks’ supporting award for Verso; D.I.C.E. honored Atsu from Ghost of Yōtei.

Game design

Design judges the systems that shape moment-to-moment play: innovation, mechanics, controls, level and world structure, pacing and the decisions presented to the player. BAFTA’s 2026 Game Design winner was Blue Prince. This is not a visual-design award and does not require a game to be the year’s overall winner.

Technical achievement

Technical categories recognize engineering and implementation, including gameplay programming, artificial intelligence, physics, engine mechanics and visual rendering. BAFTA’s 2026 winner was Ghost of Yōtei; D.I.C.E. uses the corresponding Outstanding Technical Achievement category.

Why do awards have genre, platform and audience categories?

Genre and format prizes compare games with similar goals or constraints. Winning one does not mean a game was “second place” overall; it means it excelled within that slice of the medium.

BAFTA’s Family category is specifically limited to games rated PEGI 12 or below and considers themes, content and accessibility to new players. Its Multiplayer category includes social, online and local or couch co-op play.

What do independent, debut, new-IP and British Game awards mean?

These categories describe origin, ownership or development identity—not a lower quality tier. A game can qualify for one and still win the overall prize.

Independent and debut

Independent awards recognize a studio’s independent status or publishing context. Debut awards recognize a first title during the relevant eligibility window. The Game Awards gave both Best Independent Game and Best Debut Indie Game to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which also won Game of the Year. BAFTA’s Debut Game generally excludes subsidiaries of established studios and went to the same title in 2026. The Golden Joysticks separately named Blue Prince Best Indie Game and Hollow Knight: Silksong Best Indie Game—Self-Published.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

New Intellectual Property

BAFTA’s New Intellectual Property award is for an original or innovative game that is not part of an established series. Its 2026 winner was South of Midnight. “New IP” therefore does not simply mean “made by a new studio,” and a debut game is not automatically the new-IP winner.

British Game

BAFTA’s British Game award requires creative control and overall development to be led by a British studio. Atomfall won in 2026. Entrants also answer Diversity & Inclusion and Bullying & Harassment questions supporting BFI Diversity Standards; those answers are not shown to voters and do not determine eligibility.

Studio of the Year

This is a company-level honor, not a game trophy. Sandfall Interactive won the Golden Joystick Studio of the Year award in 2025.

What are Games for Impact, Game Beyond Entertainment and accessibility awards?

They judge purpose or inclusion, not whether a game delivered the year’s broadest entertainment package. The Game Awards’ Games for Impact winner was South of Midnight; its Innovation in Accessibility winner was DOOM: The Dark Ages.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

BAFTA’s Game Beyond Entertainment award is for a game that uses the medium to create a transformational experience beyond pure entertainment—for example, empathy, engagement with real-world problems or social benefit. The experience must be a primary aim, and judging considers both in-game content and external activity. despelote won in 2026. Accessibility is a design and technical inclusion question, while impact and beyond-entertainment categories concern purpose; they should not be collapsed into one “message game” label.

What is an Evolving Game, Ongoing Game or Still Playing award?

These prizes evaluate sustained support rather than a single launch window. The Game Awards’ Best Ongoing Game went to No Man’s Sky, and Best Community Support went to Baldur’s Gate 3.

BAFTA’s Evolving Game is for a title released before the current eligibility period that has received—and will continue to receive—regular, substantial updates. Entrants need a track record of meaningful improvements during the window and a future-update roadmap. No Man’s Sky won in 2026. The Golden Joysticks’ Still Playing categories honor long-running PC/console and mobile games; 2025 winners were Minecraft and Pokémon GO. Golden Joystick also separates Best Game Expansion (Lies of P — Overture) and Best Early Access Game (R.E.P.O.) from new-release awards.

What do Most Anticipated, Best Adaptation and trailer awards recognize?

Most Anticipated or Most Wanted is a future-release popularity or hype award, not a judgment of a finished game. Grand Theft Auto VI won both shows’ 2025 anticipation category and the Golden Joystick Best Game Trailer award for its second trailer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best Adaptation evaluates a property crossing between games and film or television, rather than the underlying game’s mechanics. The Game Awards selected The Last of Us: Season 2; the Golden Joysticks selected Arcane Season 2. Those are different works and different ballots.

Who votes for The Game Awards, BAFTA, D.I.C.E. and the Golden Joysticks?

The voting body changes what a trophy represents.

Show Voting model Recent scale and date Other context
BAFTA About 1,700 games-industry members. Specialist chapters handle several craft categories; juries set most nominations and winners, while Best Game, British Game and Evolving Game remain full-membership votes. 22nd ceremony, 17 April 2026, London; 255 games considered and 42 shortlisted across 17 categories For the 2027 cycle, eligible UK releases fall between 15 November 2025 and 19 November 2026. The ceremony is 14 April 2027.
D.I.C.E. Peer panels narrow entries to a maximum of five finalists. Academy members rank up to three choices; instant-runoff counting continues until one exceeds 50 percent. Craft categories are restricted to relevant creative or technical members. 29th ceremony, 12 February 2026, Las Vegas; 64 games released in 2025 nominated Global industry awards with five Game of the Year finalists in 2026.
Golden Joystick Fans vote in most categories. Panel awards include Streamers’ Choice, Breakthrough, Critics’ Choice and the Hall of Fame honor. 43rd ceremony, 20 November 2025, London; running since 1983; 24 awards Primarily a public ballot and largely a trophy-focused ceremony.
The Game Awards Authenticated viewer voting exceeded 123 million in 2025, including the 100-percent fan-voted Players’ Voice award. An official category-by-category jury/public split for the other trophies was not published in the available materials. 11 December 2025, Los Angeles; 171 million global livestreams, 4.4 million peak concurrent viewers and 16,500 Twitch co-streamers The 2026 show is scheduled for 10 December 2026 at the Peacock Theater, with nominees promised in mid-November.

The Game Awards is also a major broadcast and announcement event: its 171 million full-show livestreams in 2025 were up 11 percent from 154 million in 2024. Golden Joystick, BAFTA and D.I.C.E. are more focused on presenting awards, although each has its own broadcast coverage.

How do the 2025–26 winners show that categories are different?

The season’s results form a useful map of the ballot. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 dominated overall and several craft categories, while specialists won elsewhere:

  • Dispatch: BAFTA Animation, Audio Achievement and supporting performer.
  • Ghost of Yōtei: BAFTA Music and Technical Achievement; D.I.C.E. Adventure, original music and character; Golden Joystick Console Game of the Year and Audio Design.
  • Arc Raiders: The Game Awards and BAFTA Multiplayer; D.I.C.E. Online Game of the Year.
  • South of Midnight: The Game Awards Games for Impact, BAFTA New Intellectual Property and D.I.C.E. Animation.
  • Blue Prince: BAFTA Game Design and Golden Joystick Best Indie Game.
  • Wuthering Waves: The Game Awards Players’ Voice, a different ballot from Game of the Year.

Reading those outcomes correctly prevents common mistakes: a genre winner is not a runner-up for overall game, an evolving-game winner is not necessarily a new release, and an anticipation winner has not been judged on a finished product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What non-competitive honors should you separate from category winners?

Some recognitions celebrate a person, organization or lasting contribution rather than rank eligible games. BAFTA’s Fellowship is its highest accolade for an individual with a substantial body of work; Ilkka Paananen received it in 2026. The Game Changer Award went to Girls Make Games in 2025. The Golden Joysticks’ Hall of Fame honored The Sims. None is interchangeable with Game of the Year.

A quick way to decode any awards list

  1. Identify the object. Is the ballot judging a whole game, one craft, a genre, a platform, a live-service history, an adaptation, a future release or a person?
  2. Check the eligibility window. BAFTA’s rules are tied to UK release dates and category-specific limits; other shows use their own calendars.
  3. Check the electorate. Peer academies, specialist chapters, juries and public voters reward different signals.
  4. Read the category name literally. “Audio Achievement” is not “Music”; “New IP” is not “Debut”; “Players’ Voice” is not “Game of the Year.”
  5. Compare winners only within the same measurement. A title can be the best RPG, best debut and overall winner simultaneously without those awards becoming duplicates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a game win Game of the Year and Best Independent Game in the same year?

Yes. The 2025 results show that the categories are compatible: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 won The Game Awards’ overall, independent and debut-indie prizes. Independent status describes the production context, while Game of the Year evaluates the complete game.

Why can BAFTA’s Best Game winner lose the Music award?

The two ballots assess different work. Best Game considers the whole title, whereas Music focuses on original composition and the creative use of licensed music, so another game can lead that specialist field.

Is Players’ Voice the same as a critics’ choice award?

No. Players’ Voice is a 100-percent fan-voted The Game Awards category, while critics’ or academy awards use professional panels or membership votes. Different electorates can legitimately produce different winners.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does an Evolving Game have to launch during the award year?

No. BAFTA’s Evolving Game category is specifically for older releases with a demonstrated record of substantial updates and a roadmap for continued support. It is designed to recognize live development over time.
