For most organizations replacing VeloCloud Orchestrator, the strongest shortlist is Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN, Cisco Meraki SD-WAN, Fortinet Secure SD-WAN, HPE Aruba EdgeConnect, Palo Alto Networks Prisma SD-WAN, Versa Networks, and Cato Networks. The right choice depends less on a feature count than on your routing heritage, branch and bandwidth profile, security ownership, cloud connectivity, and preferred operating model. Catalyst suits complex routing and large segmented networks; Meraki favors guided cloud operations; Fortinet consolidates branch security; EdgeConnect emphasizes WAN optimization; Prisma SD-WAN combines application identity and zero-trust controls; Versa offers deployment sovereignty; and Cato replaces much customer-managed edge infrastructure with a cloud-native SASE backbone.

Timing matters. Microsoft Azure documentation says VMware SD-WAN was rebranded as Arista VeloCloud. New deployments on the older VMware SD-WAN branding are scheduled to be blocked in July 2026, while existing deployments continue to work. Treat that policy, your support entitlement, and the migration window as separate checks before selecting a platform.

Why are organizations looking for a VeloCloud Orchestrator replacement now?

The immediate trigger is a branding and deployment-policy change rather than an automatic shutdown of every existing network. Microsoft Azure documentation records that VMware SD-WAN became Arista VeloCloud, that new deployments using the older VMware SD-WAN service will be blocked in July 2026, and that existing deployments continue to operate. That creates three practical questions: which organization now owns your service relationship, which software and hardware versions remain supported, and whether a new site or replacement appliance can be activated under your current contract.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm those points with your cloud provider, carrier, or managed-service partner in writing. A policy that blocks new deployments can affect a hardware refresh, a disaster-recovery site, or a temporary migration circuit even when production tunnels are still passing traffic. If your estate is stable, you may have time to migrate in phases; if you are opening many sites or replacing end-of-life appliances, start a proof of concept before the July 2026 date.

What exactly must an alternative replace?

VeloCloud Orchestrator is more than a dashboard. A replacement may need to cover centralized configuration, edge activation, routing, application-aware path selection, segmentation, security policy, monitoring, APIs, and the operational workflow used by your help desk. Some products deliver those functions in an integrated appliance; others split them between an edge, a security service, and a provider backbone.

Do not assume that an SD-WAN replacement is automatically a full SASE migration. A platform can select the best path between two circuits while leaving secure web access, cloud-delivered firewalling, or identity-based access to a separate security service. Map every current function before comparing licenses:

  • Underlay circuits, transport types, and LTE or 5G failover.
  • Dynamic routing, static routes, policy-based routing, and any BGP, OSPF, or VRF dependencies.
  • Application identification, loss/latency/jitter measurements, and brownout remediation.
  • Firewalling, intrusion prevention, TLS inspection, URL controls, and malware services.
  • Segmentation for guests, point-of-sale systems, operational technology, and corporate users.
  • Private-cloud, public-cloud, SaaS, and data-center connectivity.
  • Zero-touch provisioning, templates, role-based administration, APIs, logs, and alerting.

Which VeloCloud alternatives should be on a 2026 shortlist?

The following products represent different architectural answers, so a feature-by-feature score is not enough. Cisco’s comparison chart and CIOPages’ buyer guidance describe the distinctions below; public pricing and independent apples-to-apples performance scores are generally unavailable.

Platform Architecture and notable capabilities Primary operating advantage Important cost or design consideration
Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Broad routing and SD-WAN platform with multiregion fabric, cellular support, anomaly detection, segmentation, multicloud connectivity, application-aware optimization, and centralized security policy. Deep traditional-routing support and integration with established Cisco networks. More design and policy complexity than a guided cloud-only service; validate licensing across routing, security, and management components.
Cisco Meraki SD-WAN Cloud-managed provisioning, guided workflows, and application visibility, with a simpler operational model than a traditional routing platform. Fast deployment for small operations teams and standardized branches. Check support for legacy routing protocols, unusual topologies, and the level of local control your network requires.
Fortinet Secure SD-WAN FortiGate next-generation firewall functions, including IPS/IDS, SSL inspection, application control, URL filtering, and FortiManager/FortiAnalyzer integration. Security and SD-WAN can be consolidated at the branch. Budget for FortiGate appliances and FortiGuard subscriptions; inspection throughput depends on the selected appliance and enabled services.
HPE Aruba EdgeConnect Per-edge subscription with application visibility and path control; WAN-optimization Boost is an optional add-on. Application steering and optimization for organizations already operating HPE Aruba infrastructure. Model the base edge subscription and Boost separately, especially for high-latency or bandwidth-constrained sites.
Palo Alto Networks Prisma SD-WAN App-ID classification, path measurement, zero-trust network access, and integration with Prisma security services. Consistent application identity and security policy across SD-WAN and cloud security. ION edge subscriptions, Prisma Access, and ADEM can all affect the total subscription bill.
Versa Networks Supports on-premises, public-cloud, private-cloud, or sovereign deployments, with per-site, per-user, or capacity pricing models. Deployment and commercial flexibility for enterprises, service providers, and regulated environments. More choices require a clear ownership model, validated operations skills, and a precise bill of materials.
Cato Networks Cloud-native SASE service combining site sockets with per-user security services over a provider backbone. Less customer-managed edge infrastructure and a single subscription-oriented service. Assess dependency on the provider backbone, local breakout requirements, and the fit of a managed operating model.

Is Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN the best replacement for complex routing environments?

Catalyst SD-WAN is the broadest traditional-networking option in this group. Cisco’s comparison material lists support for established routing functions, multiregion fabric design, cellular connectivity, segmentation, multicloud links, application-aware optimization, anomaly detection, and centralized security policy. Those capabilities make it a natural candidate when your current environment already depends on sophisticated routing, multiple administrative regions, or extensive Cisco integration.

What to validate

  • Import representative BGP, OSPF, VRF, and route-policy configurations into a lab rather than assuming a direct conversion.
  • Test failover across broadband, MPLS, and cellular paths while measuring application recovery time.
  • Check how security policy, segmentation, and cloud connectivity are delegated between the SD-WAN manager and security devices.
  • Confirm which telemetry and anomaly signals are available to your network-operations tools.

Catalyst can accommodate a brownfield network, but that flexibility brings more design decisions. Document who owns routing policy, security policy, and template changes before production rollout.

When is Cisco Meraki SD-WAN easier to manage?

Meraki is designed around guided, cloud-managed provisioning and straightforward application visibility. A small operations team can normally standardize a branch template, ship an appliance, and complete activation with less device-by-device work than a deeply customized routing platform requires.

Where simplicity helps

  • Branches use common topologies and a limited number of routing exceptions.
  • Non-specialist administrators need clear health views and guided changes.
  • You want centralized configuration and rapid zero-touch deployment.

Where to be cautious

Run a compatibility workshop for legacy routing protocols, unusual multicast or voice designs, overlapping address spaces, and sites that need granular local control. Guided management reduces routine effort, but it does not remove the need to design segmentation, underlay addressing, and change-approval processes.

Does Fortinet Secure SD-WAN replace a separate branch firewall?

Fortinet’s Secure SD-WAN approach places SD-WAN functions alongside FortiGate next-generation firewall capabilities. The cited feature comparison includes intrusion prevention and detection, SSL inspection, application control, URL filtering, and centralized FortiManager and FortiAnalyzer integration. If branch security and path control are currently separate projects, consolidating them can simplify the appliance footprint and policy workflow.

Questions for a Fortinet evaluation

  • What inspection throughput remains when IPS, TLS inspection, application control, and logging are enabled together?
  • Which FortiGuard subscriptions are required for every branch, and are they recurring for the full contract term?
  • Can security policy changes be staged and rolled back without interrupting SD-WAN tunnels?
  • Do your security and network teams agree on ownership of FortiManager and FortiAnalyzer?

CIOPages characterizes the commercial model as FortiGate appliance cost plus FortiGuard subscription economics. Price the hardware, support, security services, and replacement cycle as one branch-security system rather than comparing only the SD-WAN license.

When does HPE Aruba EdgeConnect make sense?

EdgeConnect combines application visibility and path-control functions with a per-edge subscription. WAN-optimization Boost is an add-on, so it can be targeted at sites where latency, packet loss, or constrained links justify additional optimization rather than applied universally.

Evaluate optimization claims with your traffic

Use production-like file transfers, interactive applications, voice, and SaaS sessions. Measure transaction time and user experience on clean links and under controlled loss and latency. Optimization that benefits a data-center protocol may not improve encrypted SaaS traffic, so keep the Boost decision tied to measured application classes.

Existing HPE Aruba operations and skills can lower training effort, but include subscription management, appliance refresh, and any separate security controls in the design.

Is Prisma SD-WAN the right choice for application identity and zero trust?

Prisma SD-WAN uses App-ID application classification, path measurement, and zero-trust network access capabilities, with integration into Prisma security services. This is useful when security policy needs to follow an identified application or user rather than only an IP address and port.

Build the service boundary clearly

  • Decide which traffic is inspected at the branch and which is sent to Prisma Access.
  • Define identity sources, authentication requirements, and the failure behavior when identity services are unreachable.
  • Use ADEM or equivalent telemetry to connect path conditions with user-visible application performance.
  • Price ION edge subscriptions, Prisma Access, and ADEM as linked components; omitting one produces an understated total.

Prisma SD-WAN can be a strong security-led design, but it should not be evaluated solely as a replacement for an edge orchestrator if your project also requires a new secure-service-edge architecture.

Why choose Versa Networks for private, sovereign, or service-provider deployments?

Versa supports on-premises, cloud, private-cloud, and sovereign deployment patterns. CIOPages describes commercial options based on per-site, per-user, or capacity measures, which can fit organizations whose costs or data-residency requirements do not align with a single public-cloud service.

Design decisions to settle early

  • Who operates the control plane, upgrades, certificates, and 24-hour incident response?
  • Which functions run at each site, in a private cloud, or in a provider point of presence?
  • Is pricing driven by sites, users, throughput, or a combination, and how does that change as branches grow?
  • What sovereign or residency boundaries apply to telemetry, logs, and management traffic?

Versa’s flexibility is valuable only when those responsibilities are written into the operating model. A nominally private deployment can still create substantial internal labor if your team must run every control-plane component.

When is Cato’s cloud-native SASE model a better fit than customer-managed edges?

Cato combines site sockets and per-user security services through a provider backbone. That architecture can remove much of the customer-managed edge and transit infrastructure, making it materially different from selecting another appliance orchestrator.

Check the architectural trade-off

  • Map every site-to-site, site-to-cloud, and internet destination and identify where traffic must exit locally.
  • Test the provider’s backbone path to your major SaaS regions and data centers.
  • Define how local survivability works if a socket loses access to the service.
  • Compare the subscription for sites and users with the cost of circuits, firewalls, support, and internal operations you would otherwise retain.

Cato is most compelling when the organization prefers a managed backbone and unified security service over owning a large fleet of customer-managed edge devices. It may be less suitable where strict local breakout, sovereign operation, or detailed appliance-level control is mandatory.

How should you compare alternatives before naming a winner?

Use the same traffic, routing, security, and operational tests for every finalist. Cisco’s comparison guidance identifies performance, reliability, security, speed, bandwidth, scalability, and simplicity as critical; expand those into measurable acceptance criteria for your environment.

  1. Inventory the estate. Record every edge model, software version, circuit, public address, tunnel, route, segment, application policy, security function, and support contract.
  2. Confirm the July 2026 policy impact. Ask the current provider which existing deployments, new activations, hardware replacements, and management APIs remain supported under the rebranded service.
  3. Define the target operating model. Decide whether networking, security, a carrier, or a managed provider owns policy, upgrades, monitoring, and incident response.
  4. Select two or three finalists. Use the routing, security, cloud, and operating criteria above; reject products that fail a mandatory requirement before detailed pricing.
  5. Build a representative lab. Include the most complex branch, a simple branch, every circuit type, at least one critical SaaS application, and the security controls that will run in production.
  6. Run failure tests. Pull each underlay, inject controlled loss and latency, test brownouts rather than only hard outages, and record convergence and user impact.
  7. Pilot in low-risk sites. Keep the old service available, schedule a rollback window, and monitor calls, transactions, tunnels, routes, and security events for a complete business cycle.
  8. Migrate in waves. Move sites by topology and dependency, not only by geography. Keep an overlap of circuits and licenses where a data-center or payment dependency requires it.
  9. Decommission deliberately. Export configurations and logs, revoke certificates and credentials, cancel subscriptions at the correct renewal point, and retain evidence for audit and troubleshooting.

How much do VeloCloud alternatives cost?

There is no authoritative, stable public list price that makes these platforms directly comparable. CIOPages identifies the principal cost drivers as edge count and throughput, subscription tier, security or SSE seats, optional WAN optimization, support, professional services, and whether the service is managed, self-hosted, cloud-delivered, or sovereign.

Create a three-year model with separate rows for:

  • Edge hardware, spares, optics, and lifecycle replacement.
  • SD-WAN management and feature subscriptions.
  • Firewall, threat-prevention, SSE, ZTNA, or user-security seats.
  • WAN, broadband, MPLS, and cellular circuits, including installation and overage.
  • Professional services, migration labor, training, and internal operations time.
  • Temporary MPLS or dual-run costs during migration.
  • Monitoring, logging, support tiers, and compliance retention.
  • Avoided outage costs, if you can quantify them with your own incident history.

Ask each supplier to state which charges recur, which are capacity-based, and what happens when users, sites, throughput, or security inspection increases. A low first-year quote can become expensive when mandatory security seats or professional services are added.

Which alternative fits each common scenario?

Your priority Most aligned option Why
Traditional routing, segmentation, multiregion scale, and an existing Cisco estate Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Its feature set emphasizes routing depth, segmentation, multiregion fabric, multicloud, and centralized policy.
Small operations team and standardized branches Cisco Meraki SD-WAN Guided cloud management and provisioning reduce routine administration.
Branch firewall consolidation and threat inspection Fortinet Secure SD-WAN FortiGate security functions are integrated with SD-WAN and centralized management.
WAN optimization alongside HPE Aruba operations HPE Aruba EdgeConnect Application visibility and path control are paired with optional Boost optimization.
App-ID, ZTNA, and Prisma security integration Palo Alto Networks Prisma SD-WAN Application classification and identity-aware security are central to the design.
Private, sovereign, or service-provider-controlled deployment Versa Networks It supports multiple deployment locations and flexible site, user, or capacity pricing.
Cloud-native SASE and minimal customer-managed edge infrastructure Cato Networks A provider backbone and combined site/user subscription replace much of the traditional edge model.

What pitfalls commonly derail an SD-WAN replacement?

  • Confusing branding with capability. A rebrand does not by itself prove that a feature, API, appliance, or support entitlement has changed. Verify each item with current documentation and your contract.
  • Testing only hard outages. Application-aware SD-WAN earns its value during brownouts. Test rising latency, intermittent loss, and jitter while sessions are active.
  • Ignoring legacy routing. A clean greenfield demo can hide dependencies on route redistribution, multicast, VRFs, or unusual static routes.
  • Under-sizing security. Firewall and TLS inspection can consume substantial appliance or service capacity. Test with the policy enabled, not merely configured.
  • Leaving ownership undefined. A cloud console does not decide who approves changes, responds to alerts, rotates certificates, or restores a failed site.
  • Comparing unlike subscriptions. Include seats, optimization, support, analytics, managed services, and temporary overlap in every quote.
  • Forgetting exit plans. Export configurations, document routing and policy intent, and retain a tested rollback path before removing the old service.

How should a proof of concept be scored?

Give each finalist the same weighted scorecard and require evidence rather than sales demonstrations. A practical weighting is 25 percent routing and failover, 20 percent security, 15 percent application performance, 15 percent operations, 10 percent cloud and SaaS connectivity, and 15 percent three-year cost; adjust the weights when regulatory or routing requirements are unusually strong.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can existing VMware SD-WAN sites keep running after July 2026?

Microsoft Azure documentation says existing deployments continue to work, while new deployments on the older VMware SD-WAN service are blocked in July 2026. Confirm the exact effect on your tenant, hardware replacement process, and support contract with the service owner before relying on that statement for a long-term plan.

Do I need to replace every branch at once?

No. A wave-based migration can keep the current service at sites that are stable while you pilot the new platform at representative branches. Plan interoperability, routing exchange, monitoring, and dual-run circuit costs so that mixed operation is intentional rather than accidental.

Is SD-WAN the same thing as SASE?

No. SD-WAN primarily steers traffic across underlays and connects sites, clouds, and users. SASE commonly adds cloud-delivered security and identity controls; some products integrate those services, while others require separate components.

What information should I give vendors for an accurate quote?

Provide site count, edge throughput, circuit types, peak and average traffic, security inspection requirements, user or SSE counts, cellular needs, support hours, deployment locations, and the number of months you expect to run old and new services together. Ask vendors to identify every recurring, usage-based, and professional-services charge.
