To trigger a Jotun Invasion in Valheim, reach the Deep North, use an Intricate Key to enter a Mörkhalla, destroy the Malicious Ice at the dungeon’s bottom, then travel to the map marker that appears and destroy the larger Malicious Ice there. The invasion ends only when that objective breaks; killing enemies alone is not enough. Each completed event awards one Malicious Blood. You need three Blood to open the Aesir Passage and begin the route to Kall Fimbulbringer.
The event is player-triggered rather than a random base raid. Because its marker can appear in older biomes and may be far from the Deep North, a portal plan, boat route and recovery supplies are as important as combat gear.

The Jotun Invasion is the Deep North’s repeatable progression event in Valheim 1.0. It begins when you destroy a specific Malicious Ice inside a Mörkhalla dungeon, creates an invasion marker somewhere else in the world, and ends when you destroy the Malicious Ice at that marked site.
This is not a standard base raid that starts on a timer and expires after a defensive period. The player starts the encounter by completing the dungeon objective, and the event remains focused on the marked objective until that ice is broken. Krigen, Hexen and Elaking enemies continue to appear while the invasion ice remains active, so clearing waves without damaging the objective does not complete the event.

Iron Gate launched Valheim 1.0, including the Deep North, on September 9, 2026. The Deep North update is part of a much larger progression tier: Iron Gate describes more than 40 weapons, 10 creatures, 80 buildable pieces, 30 crafting materials and 20 food items in the 1.0 release. Those figures describe the overall release, not rewards from a single invasion.
What do I need before entering Mörkhalla?
You should treat the first invasion as a travel-and-objective mission, not as an expedition that ends at the dungeon entrance. Gather the Deep North progression materials needed for a Frost Foundry and an Intricate Key, then prepare a route to wherever the event marker may appear.
Progression requirements
- Access to the Deep North: You must be able to travel and fight in the biome where Mörkhalla is found.
- A Frost Foundry: The Deep North crafting progression leads to the materials and station needed for the Intricate Key.
- An Intricate Key: Bring one for each Mörkhalla run. The final-boss route requires three complete invasion cycles, so plan on three keys unless your world provides another way to replace them.
- Combat equipment: Use your strongest available armor, weapons, healing food and stamina food. The dungeon and the outdoor event are separate fights, so leave enough durability and consumables for both.
Travel and recovery preparation
- Portal materials: A portal near your Deep North staging area and another safe location near the marked site can eliminate repeated overland trips.
- Boat and sailing supplies: The marker can be offshore or outside your existing portal network. A boat route gives you an alternative when a portal cannot be placed conveniently.
- Return plan: Mark the dungeon, portal, shoreline and invasion site on your map. If you die before destroying the ice, a clear recovery route prevents a single failed run from becoming a second expedition.
- Space for combat: Carry tools and materials for clearing trees, rocks or other obstacles around the objective. You need room to reach the center while enemies are still spawning.
Solo players should favor stamina, healing and an escape route because every enemy and the objective compete for attention. In co-op, decide before leaving who will control crowds, who will damage the ice and who will maintain portal or boat logistics.
How do I trigger a Jotun Invasion?
The complete trigger chain is Mörkhalla, dungeon Malicious Ice, map marker, outdoor Malicious Ice. Follow these steps in order.
- Reach the Deep North and locate a Mörkhalla. Start from a prepared staging point rather than carrying your entire base into the biome. Confirm that everyone entering has the equipment and food needed for a full dungeon clear.
- Bring an Intricate Key into the dungeon. The key is part of the Deep North progression and is required to enter Mörkhalla. If you are planning the Kall Fimbulbringer route, collect enough progression materials to make three keys over the course of the campaign.
- Work down to the bottom floor. The event is not triggered by entering Mörkhalla or defeating ordinary dungeon enemies. Continue through the dungeon until you reach its bottom Malicious Ice.
- Destroy the dungeon’s Malicious Ice. Breaking this ice starts the invasion sequence and places a new marker on your world map. This is the point of no longer treating the run as an ordinary dungeon clear: pause, read the map and decide how you will travel.
- Prepare the route to the marker. Establish a portal when the location and surroundings permit it, or select a boat and shoreline route if the marker is distant or offshore. Restock before leaving the dungeon area; the event marker can be in a different biome and may not be close to the Deep North.
- Reach the marked invasion site. Clear enough terrain to approach the center without getting trapped by objects or terrain. Enemies are part of the threat, but the Malicious Ice is the actual completion objective.
- Destroy the larger Malicious Ice. Focus damage on the central ice while teammates control Krigen, Hexen and Elaking. Community references for current 1.0 behavior describe an event area roughly 100–300 meters across and list 1,000 health for the invasion ice; treat those figures as patch-sensitive guidance rather than permanent constants.
- Collect the Malicious Blood reward. The invasion ends when the objective breaks, and each completed invasion awards one Malicious Blood. You do not need to kill every enemy after the ice is destroyed.
- Repeat the chain twice. A single Blood is not enough for the final-boss route. Return to the Deep North progression, run another Mörkhalla with another key, follow its new marker and destroy its event ice until you have three Blood.
Where can the Jotun Invasion marker spawn?
The marker is not restricted to the Deep North. Current 1.0 community guides report locations in several established biomes, so a short-looking dungeon run can turn into a long cross-world trip.
| Possible marker biome | What it means for your plan |
|---|---|
| Meadows | Usually easier terrain, but the site may still be far from your current base or portal network. |
| Black Forest | Expect obstructed ground and limited sight lines when clearing an approach to the objective. |
| Swamp | Water, uneven ground and hostile surroundings make a portal and a marked escape route especially valuable. |
| Mountain | Elevation and difficult movement can turn the final approach into a longer combat sequence; plan stamina and recovery space. |
| Plains | Open ground gives better visibility, but the invasion remains dangerous while the objective continues spawning enemies. |
The practical rule is to read the marker before committing to the next fight. Do not assume that finishing a Mörkhalla means the invasion will be nearby or that it will remain in the Deep North.

How do I stop a Jotun Invasion?
Break the invasion’s central Malicious Ice. Enemy kills are useful only to create a safe path and buy time; the event does not finish because the surrounding Krigen, Hexen or Elaking have been defeated.
Objective-first combat
- Approach from a direction that leaves an open retreat lane.
- Use crowd-control attacks, terrain or assigned defenders to keep enemies away from the player damaging the ice.
- Switch back to the objective whenever the route is clear. Do not spend the entire encounter chasing enemies around the event radius.
- When the ice breaks, regroup immediately. The completion condition has been met, so continuing to fight every remaining creature only adds risk.
The event ice’s current community-documented health is 1,000, but damage requirements can change with balance patches. Build your plan around reaching and protecting the objective, not around an assumed number of swings or a fixed enemy count.
Should I use a portal or sail to the invasion site?
Use a portal when you can establish a safe connection near the marker; use a boat when the location is offshore or outside practical portal coverage. Neither approach changes the event trigger, but both can reduce the cost of repeating the three-invasion chain.
| Travel approach | Strengths | Limitations | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portal network | Fast repeated trips, easier corpse recovery and efficient returns to the Deep North. | Requires a safe location and materials, and the marker may not offer a convenient place to connect. | Established worlds with mapped staging points and enough portal materials. |
| Boat route | Reaches offshore markers and coastlines beyond existing portal coverage. | Requires sailing time, a safe landing and protection for the boat and crew. | Markers across water or far from your portal network. |
| Mixed plan | Portal for the home-to-staging leg, boat for the final coastal route, and a return portal where possible. | More setup work before the fight. | Long-distance or geographically awkward markers. |
Set up the travel plan after the dungeon ice is destroyed but before starting the outdoor approach. The marker itself tells you more about the route than the dungeon does, so this pause prevents an avoidable trip with empty food slots, damaged equipment or no recovery connection.
What changes between solo and co-op invasions?
Solo play is viable only if you can alternate between controlling enemies and damaging the ice without losing your escape route. Co-op makes the objective easier to protect when players assign jobs instead of everyone chasing the same target.
Solo priorities
- Keep the objective within reach of an open retreat path.
- Use short damage windows rather than committing to a long attack animation while several enemies are active.
- Carry enough healing and stamina food to survive the travel leg as well as the encounter.
- Place or identify recovery options before you start damaging the ice.
Co-op roles
- Objective attacker: Stays close to the Malicious Ice and deals consistent damage.
- Crowd controller: Pulls Krigen, Hexen and Elaking away from the attacker without dragging them through the objective.
- Scout and route lead: Identifies a safe approach, portal location and retreat lane.
- Recovery support: Keeps the group supplied and maintains the return route after the ice breaks.
Groups should agree that the ice, not the kill counter, is the win condition. That single call prevents the most common co-op failure: splitting up to chase spawns while the objective remains untouched.

Should I finish the invasion quickly or farm its enemies?
Choose fast progression when your goal is the Aesir Passage and Kall Fimbulbringer. Consider farming only when you deliberately want continuous enemy spawns and are prepared to keep the site active; exact loot rates are not established here and should not be assumed.
| Approach | How it works | Advantages | Costs and risks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fast progression | Clear a route, damage the central ice and leave as soon as it breaks. | Secures one Malicious Blood with the least exposure and keeps the three-cycle route moving. | Provides less time to fight additional spawns or collect incidental drops. |
| Enemy farming | Leave the invasion ice intact so Krigen, Hexen and Elaking continue appearing. | Creates a repeatable combat site for players seeking drops or practice. | Spawns remain active, deaths are more likely, and current guides do not establish a guaranteed loot rate. |
Do not describe an active site as a guaranteed resource farm. Its useful feature is continuous spawning while the objective remains, but the value depends on your current patch, build, group size and ability to control the area.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow many Malicious Blood do I need to summon Kall Fimbulbringer?
You need three Malicious Blood. Each completed Jotun Invasion awards one, so the route requires three Intricate Key preparations, three Mörkhalla bottom-floor clears and three outdoor objectives.
- Complete the first invasion and secure one Blood.
- Repeat the Mörkhalla-to-marker chain twice, keeping the travel plan ready for each new marker.
- Take all three Blood to the Aesir Passage and its Strange Bowl.
- Use the three Blood there to start the route leading to Kall Fimbulbringer.
Do not spend the first reward expecting the final route to open immediately. The progression gate is deliberately tied to three completed events rather than one successful invasion.
What did patch 1.0.15 change for Jotun-related loot?
Iron Gate’s 1.0.15 patch increased the drop chance for Deep North armor moulds. Its note explains that both Jotun Warrior types now drop both medium and heavy armor moulds, so guides written before that patch can understate current drop opportunities.
This change affects how you evaluate farming advice, not the invasion’s completion condition. The Malicious Ice still controls event completion and Malicious Blood rewards, while armor-mould drops depend on the creatures and the current patch’s drop behavior. Do not turn the patch note into a fixed percentage: no universal rate is established by the information available here.

What should I do if the event does not seem to start or end?
No marker appears after the dungeon clear
Confirm that you destroyed the Malicious Ice at the bottom of Mörkhalla rather than merely defeating the dungeon’s enemies. Open the map and look for the newly created invasion marker before leaving the area; the outdoor event is tied to that objective, not to the dungeon entrance.
The marker is difficult to reach
Rebuild the route around the marker instead of returning blindly to the dungeon. A portal may solve an overland trip, while a boat may be the practical option for an offshore or coastal location. Mark your landing and retreat points before starting the fight.
The enemies keep coming
That behavior is expected while the event Malicious Ice remains intact. Assign one player, or create a safe solo window, to damage the ice; killing waves without touching the objective prolongs the encounter.

Search the center of the marked event area and clear enough terrain to expose your approach. Current community references describe a radius of roughly 100–300 meters, so the marker identifies an area rather than necessarily placing the objective directly beneath the map icon.
You need another event but several are already active
Current Valheim.tools documentation lists a maximum of three concurrent Jotun Invasions. If your world has reached that limit, complete an active objective before starting another Mörkhalla trigger.
How does the Jotun Invasion fit into Valheim 1.0?
The event is designed as a bridge between Deep North preparation and the final-boss route, not as an optional random raid. Its travel requirement also makes the broader 1.0 world relevant: the new biome’s progression can send you back through Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp, Mountain or Plains depending on the marker.

Iron Gate documents Valheim servers for one to 10 players. That range supports both a carefully prepared solo route and larger groups that divide objective damage, crowd control and logistics. Community-sourced details such as the three-event concurrency limit, approximate event radius and current ice health should be checked again after future balance patches, while the three-Blood progression requirement is the central route described for the current 1.0 cycle.
Recommended three-run checklist
- Prepare Deep North gear, Frost Foundry materials and an Intricate Key.
- Bring portal materials, or identify a boat route before entering Mörkhalla.
- Reach the bottom-floor Malicious Ice and destroy it.
- Read the map marker and establish a safe travel and recovery plan.
- At the invasion site, prioritize the central Malicious Ice over enemy kills.
- Collect one Malicious Blood when the ice breaks.
- Repeat the process twice, keeping track of keys and Blood.
- Use all three Blood at the Aesir Passage’s Strange Bowl to begin the Kall Fimbulbringer route.
The reliable way through the Jotun Invasion is therefore objective-first and travel-aware: trigger it in Mörkhalla, reach the marked site prepared for a cross-biome fight, break the invasion ice, and repeat until the three-Blood gate opens.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I continue an existing Valheim world after the 1.0 Deep North launch?
Iron Gate’s 1.0 FAQ says you can continue an existing world, but its recommendation is to start over. A fresh world gives the Deep North progression and world generation the intended context; an older world is the supported choice for players who prefer to preserve an established base.
How many players can join a Valheim server for this event?
Iron Gate lists Valheim servers for one to 10 players. A larger group can divide the invasion’s travel, crowd-control and objective jobs, while a solo player must cover all three roles alone.
Why do older videos show fewer Deep North armor mould opportunities?
Patch 1.0.15 increased the drop chance by making both Jotun Warrior types drop both medium and heavy armor moulds. Videos recorded before that patch may therefore describe a narrower drop pool than the current 1.0.15 behavior.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can multiple Jotun Invasions be active in one world?
Current Valheim.tools documentation lists three concurrent Jotun Invasions as the maximum. If that cap is reached, finish an active invasion before creating another trigger from Mörkhalla.
