Buy the exact SCPH model and regional suffix, not merely a listing labeled “fat” or “Slim.” For a used PlayStation 2, choose a compatible later fat model (especially SCPH-30000, SCPH-39000, or SCPH-50000) if you need the expansion-bay/HDD ecosystem. Choose a Slim from the SCPH-70000–90000 range when compact size and a simpler setup matter more. Whichever family you choose, pay only after the optical drive, your target game, controller, memory card, video cable, and television connection have been demonstrated. A power light or browser screen alone does not establish that the console is ready to use.

These are buying categories rather than a universal reliability ranking. The complete model number, suffix, condition and included hardware decide whether a particular listing is suitable.

Which PS2 should I buy used?

Buy a later fat console when you specifically want the official expansion-bay/HDD arrangement or prefer the larger chassis. Buy a Slim when saving space and having networking built into the console are higher priorities. In both cases, the safest listing is a tested unit with a readable label, a working optical drive, responsive controller, working memory card, usable video cable and a return window.

Choose a later fat for expansion-bay storage

Sony’s service specification for the covered SCPH-30000, SCPH-35000, SCPH-39000 and SCPH-50000 families records an HDD-by-slot connection. Those same systems have two controller ports, two memory-card slots, two USB ports and one S400/i.LINK port. That combination is why these later fat families are the relevant choices for buyers planning an expansion-bay/HDD setup.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Do not assume every fat console has the same arrangement. “Fat” includes earlier SCPH-10000 through SCPH-50000 revisions, and the expansion-bay question is model-specific. Ask for a clear photograph of the rear and the full SCPH label before paying.

Choose a Slim for size and a simpler physical setup

SCPH-70000 through SCPH-90000 systems are the Slim range. They take up much less space, but their revisions change the accessory and storage trade-offs. The late SCPH-90000 family has an internal power supply; Sony’s SCPH-90002/90003 guide gives approximate dimensions of 230 × 28 × 152 mm and approximate power consumption of 35 W.

A Slim is the practical choice for a small entertainment unit or frequent moving. Confirm the exact revision and suffix rather than assuming that one Slim accessory list applies to all others.

Why “best PS2 revision” is the wrong question

There is no evidence here for a statistically validated reliability winner, universal defect rate or expected lifespan by revision. A well-tested individual console with a return policy is a safer purchase than an untested listing for a supposedly desirable revision.

What should I check in the SCPH model number?

The SCPH number identifies the hardware family, while the regional suffix identifies the market and the manuals and accessories that apply. Have the seller photograph the complete label instead of accepting “Japanese,” “PAL” or “North American” as a description.

  • Family: SCPH-10000–50000 are fat-era families; SCPH-70000–90000 are Slim families.
  • Exact revision: A SCPH-39000, SCPH-50000 and SCPH-70000 do not share identical expansion, power or accessory assumptions.
  • Regional suffix: Suffixes such as 90002, 90003 and 90004 identify different regional documentation and compatibility conditions.
  • Label condition: A missing, blurred or replaced label makes it harder to verify accessories, video standards and game-region expectations.

Record the model and suffix in the listing messages and compare them with the matching Sony manual before buying accessories.

How do PS2 and PS1 game compatibility work?

Test the discs you actually intend to play. The SCPH-90004 documentation lists PlayStation 2 DVD-ROM, DVD-Video, DVD+R/DVD+RW, supported DVD-R/DVD-RW modes, PlayStation 2 CD-ROM, PlayStation CD-ROM and audio CD formats, but it also warns that some PlayStation or PlayStation 2 software may perform differently from earlier systems.

Match the console, disc and television regions

Regional identity matters for games, DVDs and video standards. The cited SCPH-90004 guide specifies PAL broadcast-standard DVD playback. That is not a blanket statement about every PS2. A used console imported from another region may not play the discs you own or display correctly on your television setup.

Before purchase, identify one PS2 game, one PS1 game if relevant, and any DVD you expect to use. Ask the seller to demonstrate those actual discs, or buy only with a return period that lets you test them at home.

Unusual CD-based titles deserve a separate check

Many buyers remember DVD games and overlook CD-based software. Include any CD-format PS2 title, original PlayStation disc, imported game or known compatibility concern in the test request. A console reaching the browser menu does not prove that its optical drive reads every format you need.

Which memory card works with a PS2?

Use an 8MB PlayStation 2 memory card for PlayStation 2 saves. Do not substitute an original PlayStation memory card: Sony identifies these as separate products with different capacities and purposes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Card Model Intended software Capacity stated by Sony
Memory Card (8MB) for PlayStation 2 SCPH-10020 E PlayStation 2 format software Approximately 8 MB
Memory Card for PlayStation SCPH-1020 E Original PlayStation format software 15 memory blocks, approximately 120 KB; Sony notes this product is no longer manufactured

For a replacement, search for a listing clearly identified as a PlayStation 2 8MB memory card. Insert it into each relevant slot, create a save, load it, and delete it during the inspection. A card that is physically present but cannot complete those operations is not a usable bundle component.

What accessories do I need for a used PS2?

Start with the minimum working setup: the console, a compatible controller, an 8MB PS2 memory card, a video cable that matches your television input, and the required power hardware. Add a multitap, DVD remote, Ethernet cable or stand only when your use case requires it.

Controller

Test both controller ports, analog sticks, every button, pressure-sensitive functions and vibration where applicable. Confirm that the included pad is a working controller rather than an untested spare. If you plan multiplayer, test each additional controller and the multitap together.

Video cable and television input

Ask the seller to show the console producing a stable picture through the type of input you will use. Confirm that the cable is included and that the television accepts that signal. A console that works on the seller’s display may still leave you without a usable connection if your television needs a different input arrangement.

DVD remote and infrared hardware

For the cited SCPH-90004 family, Sony specifies DVD remote SCPH-10420 E, which does not use a separate infrared receiver. Do not transfer that assumption to another regional family without checking its manual.

Multitap

Sony specifies multitap SCPH-70120 E for the cited SCPH-90004 family and warns that other multitap model numbers may damage the console. The same documentation lists SCPH-10090 E Multitap and SCPH-1070 E Multitap as incompatible with that family. Model-number matching is more important than a seller’s generic “PS2 multitap” description.

Network accessories

Sony’s SCPH-90002/90003 guide says online PS2 games require a network-compatible game, broadband Internet service, a commercially available Ethernet cable and an 8MB PS2 memory card. Networking is therefore a specific requirement, not an automatic reason to pay extra for an Ethernet cable in every bundle.

How do I test a used PS2 before buying?

Bring or request the exact game and television setup you care about. Use this sequence so a console cannot pass on a power light alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Verify identity: Photograph the full SCPH label and regional suffix. Check that the advertised model matches the console.
  2. Inspect the exterior: Look for cracked hinges, damaged disc trays or lids, missing expansion-bay covers, corrosion, heavy smoke residue and signs of liquid exposure.
  3. Check power-up: Confirm a normal startup, but treat the browser screen as only the beginning of the test.
  4. Run a target PS2 game: Let the disc reach playable gameplay. Note grinding, repeated retries, failure to recognize the disc or unusual loading behavior.
  5. Run other required formats: Test a PS1 disc, CD-based PS2 title, imported disc or DVD only if it matters to your library and region.
  6. Test controllers: Check both ports, analog sticks, buttons, pressure-sensitive inputs and vibration where applicable.
  7. Test saving: Create, load and delete a save on the included memory card. Repeat in the slot you intend to use.
  8. Test your display path: Use the supplied cable and the television input you will actually use. Confirm a stable picture and sound.
  9. Check add-ons: If the bundle includes a multitap, remote, stand or network hardware, verify its exact model and operation.
  10. Document the bundle: Write down every controller, card, cable, stand, multitap, remote and power item included.
  11. Confirm the return window: Choose terms that allow additional discs and accessories to be tested at home.

This inspection establishes the condition of that individual used unit. It does not prove that every console with the same SCPH number has identical reliability.

Can a used PS2 connect to a modern TV?

It can work if the console’s video output, cable and television input are compatible, but the listing must be judged as a complete signal path. Ask for a live demonstration using the cable supplied with the console and, ideally, a display similar to yours.

  • Confirm which cable is included and whether your television has the matching input.
  • Check both picture and sound rather than accepting a photograph of the startup screen.
  • For an imported console, verify the regional video standard; the SCPH-90004 guide’s PAL DVD statement is specific to that family and does not describe every PS2.
  • Keep the return option until you have tested the console on your own display.

Can I use a hard drive or multitap with this model?

Use the expansion-bay/HDD path only with a compatible fat family, particularly the covered SCPH-30000, SCPH-35000, SCPH-39000 and SCPH-50000 systems. A Slim listing should not be treated as equivalent just because it is newer.

For multiplayer, match the multitap model to the exact console and regional manual. The SCPH-90004 documentation’s SCPH-70120 E requirement and incompatibility warnings demonstrate why a generic accessory listing is insufficient.

How should I compare two used listings?

Compare the total usable setup rather than the bare-console price. The researched evidence does not establish a universal fair price, defect rate or expected lifespan, so a single “right price” would be misleading.

Comparison point Questions to ask
Identity What is the complete SCPH number and regional suffix? Is the label readable?
Hardware goal Do you need a compatible fat expansion bay/HDD, or is compact Slim hardware enough?
Optical drive Which exact game or disc was tested, and did it reach playable gameplay?
Controls and saves Are the controller, both ports and the 8MB PS2 memory card tested?
Display Which cable and television input were demonstrated?
Completeness Are power hardware, stand, multitap, remote and other advertised items present and working?
Protection What return period covers testing at home, including additional discs and accessories?

A cheaper bare console can become the more expensive purchase once a controller, memory card, cable or repair is added. Conversely, do not pay extra for accessories that your setup does not need.

What are the most common used-PS2 buying mistakes?

  • Buying by “fat” or “Slim” alone: The label hides revision-specific expansion, power and accessory differences.
  • Accepting a startup photo as proof: A browser screen does not demonstrate optical-drive, controller, save or video performance.
  • Mixing memory-card types: PS2 and original PlayStation cards are distinct Sony products.
  • Assuming accessories are universal: Sony explicitly requires accessories compatible with the console model.
  • Ignoring regional identity: Game, DVD and television compatibility can change with the suffix and video standard.
  • Comparing only console prices: Missing cables, controllers, cards and return protection affect the usable cost.
  • Assuming a revision guarantees reliability: The inspected unit’s actual condition matters more than an unsupported reputation.

How we picked the buying recommendations

The recommendations use the distinctions established in Sony’s service specifications and manuals: exact SCPH family and suffix, expansion-bay/HDD availability, Slim dimensions and power information where documented, game and media formats, memory-card requirements, model-specific accessory warnings, and the practical inspection points needed to verify a complete working setup. They do not rely on an unverified price average, defect statistic or lifespan claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a separate memory card for original PlayStation games on a PS2?

Yes, plan around the software format. Sony identifies an SCPH-1020 E card for original PlayStation saves and an SCPH-10020 E 8MB card for PlayStation 2 saves; they are not interchangeable by description alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a late Slim automatically a safer purchase than an older fat PS2?

No. Slim systems reduce size, while compatible later fat systems offer the expansion-bay/HDD path. The individual console’s disc reading, controller, memory-card, cable and return protection are more useful buying evidence than age or shape by itself.

What should an imported PS2 buyer verify first?

Verify the complete regional suffix, the games and DVDs you intend to use, and the television’s video standard. The SCPH-90004 documentation, for example, specifies PAL DVD playback, so its details should not be generalized to another region.

Does every PS2 bundle need an Ethernet cable?

No. Sony’s networking requirements apply when you intend to play a network-compatible PS2 game online and include broadband service, an Ethernet cable and an 8MB PS2 memory card. For offline play, the cable is optional.
