Before paying for a used Pixel 4, confirm the exact model and storage, test its battery behavior and key functions, and verify that the specific phone will work with your carrier. Treat water resistance and continued software support as uncertain: neither should be assumed from the phone’s original specifications.
Confirm the model and storage in Settings
Ask the seller to open Settings and show which phone is being sold. Do not rely on the case or listing description: the standard Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL differ in size, display and battery.

Google lists the standard Pixel 4 with 6 GB LPDDR4x memory and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor. These are original specifications, not evidence about a particular used phone’s condition or remaining battery capacity. Google Pixel 4 (2019) specifications
Check battery behavior and account for repair
If possible, ask to see the phone operating unplugged. Watch for a percentage that falls unusually quickly, unexpected shutdowns, charging interruptions, unusual heat or a back panel that appears lifted. These checks can reveal warning signs, but they are not a measurement of remaining battery capacity. Google’s 2,800 mAh figure is the Pixel 4’s original specification, not a health reading for a used unit.

A replacement is possible, but include the cost and availability of qualified service in your offer rather than assuming a cheap battery will be genuine or correctly installed. iFixit lists a replacement for battery model G020I-B and provides a Pixel 4 battery replacement guide and a replacement battery listing. Google warns that improper battery replacement can cause fire, explosion, leakage or other hazards, and recommends contacting Google or an authorized service provider. Google safety manual
Inspect the screen, body and everyday functions
- Screen: View light and dark backgrounds to look for cracks, dead pixels, discoloration and burn-in. Drag a finger across the entire display to check touch response.
- Frame and glass: Look for impact damage, gaps, cracked glass or signs the phone has been opened.
- Buttons and audio: Test the power and volume buttons, cameras, microphones and speakers.
- Charging: Test USB-C charging and Qi wireless charging if practical. Google lists Qi-certified wireless charging for the Pixel 4. Do not count on water resistance
Google’s original specification lists IP68 dust and water protection, but explicitly cautions that water resistance is not permanent and may be compromised by normal wear, repair, disassembly or damage. A cracked phone, hard impact or repair history is a reason for added caution, not a reason to test the device by submerging it. Google’s Pixel 4 hardware specification

Verify carrier compatibility, lock and eSIM
Before paying, check the exact phone’s IMEI and lock status through the intended carrier’s process. Confirm that its supported network bands suit the carrier and country where it will be used. Google says Pixel 4 and 4 XL units sold through the US Google Store were unlocked and worked on major US networks, but that general statement does not establish the status of a second-hand handset: it may be locked, unpaid, blocked or otherwise unsuitable for your account. Google lists eSIM availability for Pixel 4 only in Australia, Canada, Germany, Spain, the UK, Japan, Taiwan and the US, and says to check with the carrier. Country eligibility alone does not confirm that a particular used phone or carrier account is provisioned for eSIM. Verify it directly before relying on it.

Check the update state before deciding
Google committed to a minimum of three years of OS and security updates from the Pixel 4’s first availability on the US Google Store. Google’s launch article also described monthly security updates for three years. Because the phone launched in 2019, do not assume that official updates continue today; check the device’s installed software and last update date, and make your decision with the support commitment in mind. - Standard Pixel 4 versus Pixel 4 XL, and 64 GB versus 128 GB where applicable.
- Battery behavior, visible swelling or evidence of prior repair.
- Screen and body condition, tested ports and functions, and seller return terms.
- Confirmed network compatibility, lock status and the phone’s update state.
Used prices, repair costs, seller reliability and return policies depend on the listing and location; assess those individually rather than treating any published specification as a guarantee.
