In iOS 27, Apple’s Extend tool can expand the edges of a photo so it fits an iPhone wallpaper frame without enlarging the subject until it is cut off. It is not available on every iPhone: Apple Intelligence support starts with iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later, and also depends on language, region, and feature usage limits.
On an eligible iPhone, open Photos, choose a picture, tap Edit > Tools > Extend, adjust the frame, generate the expanded image, and save it. Then choose that edited image under Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos. Older iPhones can still crop and set photos as wallpaper, but this article does not identify a verified third-party AI extender for them.
What does the AI wallpaper extender in iOS 27 actually do?
Apple’s Extend tool enlarges the image beyond its original borders. Instead of simply zooming in or cropping away part of the picture, it generates additional background around the existing photo so the composition can fit a wallpaper frame.
That distinction matters when the subject is already close to an edge. A conventional crop may remove a person’s head, a building, or the horizon. Extend gives you room to reposition the picture while retaining more of the original subject.

Apple describes the broader Apple Intelligence editing capability this way: “With Apple Intelligence, you can remove distracting objects, extend a photo beyond its original frame, and adjust its perspective.” In the Photos workflow, the relevant command is named Extend, not “AI Wallpaper” or “Expand Wallpaper.”
The result is an edited image in your Photos library. You still have to select that image in the wallpaper setup screen; generating it does not automatically change your Lock Screen.
Which iPhones can use Extend in iOS 27?
The built-in tool requires an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone. Apple’s current support information lists the following starting point for iPhone hardware:

The model list is only the hardware part of the answer. Apple Intelligence features can depend on the language selected for Apple Intelligence, the country or region in which the device is being used, and limits on some server-assisted requests. A compatible model can therefore have a different feature experience from another compatible model in a different language or region.
“Any iPhone” is consequently too broad for the native feature. On an older or non-eligible model, you may still see the normal Photos editing controls and the wallpaper picker, but that does not make Extend available.
What should I check before trying to extend a photo?
Confirm these conditions before looking for the command. They prevent the most common mistaken assumption—that installing or enabling iOS 27 alone makes Extend appear on every iPhone.
- Hardware: Check that the phone is an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, an iPhone 16 model, or a later model covered by Apple’s Apple Intelligence support list.
- Software: The workflow described here is the iOS 27 Photos editor path: Photos, Edit, Tools, Extend.
- Apple Intelligence setup: Make sure Apple Intelligence is available for the device’s selected language and region. Availability is not universal across all language and regional combinations.
- Usage availability: Some Apple Intelligence generation is server-assisted and can be subject to usage limits. A temporary limit can affect generation even when the phone model is eligible.
- Source photo: Use an image already visible in Photos. You need to be able to open it in the editor before the Extend control can be used.
- Wallpaper goal: Decide whether you want to preserve a particular subject or create an entirely new scene. Extend is for expanding an existing image; Image Playground is the alternative for generating a new one.
How do I extend a photo so it fits my iPhone wallpaper?
Use the Photos editor, not the wallpaper picker, to create the expanded image. The controls are in this order:

- Open Photos. Find and open the picture you want to use.
- Tap Edit. This opens the photo-editing interface.
- Tap Tools, then Extend. If Extend is absent, stop here and use the troubleshooting section below rather than assuming another crop menu contains it.
- Enlarge the background. Pinch or drag the photo to increase the visible canvas. These gestures let you control how much of the surrounding area is added.
- Adjust the frame. Drag the frame edge to change the crop and placement. Keep the important subject inside the composition while deciding where the generated area should appear.
- Tap Extend. The tool generates the expanded image using the framing you selected.
- Tap Done, then Done again. The two confirmations finish the edit and save the resulting image in Photos.
The key control is the frame, not a wallpaper-specific zoom slider. If the subject is too close to an edge, move the frame or enlarge the surrounding canvas before tapping Extend. If the result does not suit the Lock Screen, you can return to the image and make another edit rather than trying to correct everything in the wallpaper preview.
How do I set the extended image as my Lock Screen wallpaper?
After saving the expanded image, apply it from the wallpaper settings. The complete path is:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Wallpaper.
- Tap Add New Wallpaper.
- Choose Photos.
- Select the image you just extended.
- Tap Add.
- Choose Set as Wallpaper Pair to use the selection for the Lock Screen and Home Screen, or choose Customize Home Screen to configure the Home Screen separately.
There is a second way to open the same wallpaper gallery: touch and hold the Lock Screen, then use the wallpaper controls to add a new wallpaper. This shortcut changes how you reach the gallery; it does not replace the Photos editing steps required to generate extra image area.
If the picture looks right in Photos but not in the wallpaper preview, go back to Photos and create a version with more surrounding space. The wallpaper picker can position the saved image, but it cannot turn a tightly framed original into an expanded one.

Missing Extend normally means that one of the eligibility or availability conditions is not met. Check the branches below in order.
Is the iPhone model eligible?
Start with the hardware. Apple’s Apple Intelligence list begins with iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later. If your phone is outside that group, the native Photos command is not expected to appear. Ordinary editing and wallpaper controls can remain available even though the AI tool is not.
Are language and region supported?
Apple Intelligence availability depends on supported language and region. A qualifying model can therefore lack a feature when its current language or regional setting is outside Apple’s availability conditions. Check those conditions before treating the missing control as a Photos malfunction.

Are you in the correct editor?
Extend is under Photos > Edit > Tools. It is not a command in the initial wallpaper gallery. Open an individual image first, enter Edit, and then inspect Tools.

Could a usage limit be involved?
Some Apple Intelligence operations use server assistance and can have usage limits. If the command is present but generation does not complete, the limitation may be temporary rather than a hardware incompatibility. Try again later and confirm that the phone still meets the language and regional conditions.
Is the image available in Photos?
The documented workflow starts with a photo in Photos. If you are viewing an image in another app, save or import it into Photos first, then reopen the editor and follow the documented path.
Can I use the AI extender on an older iPhone?
Not with Apple’s native Extend workflow when the device is outside the Apple Intelligence-supported models. Older iPhones can still use ordinary photo editing, resize or crop an image, and set it through the wallpaper picker, but those actions do not generate new background beyond the original frame.
The available evidence does not verify a particular third-party generative editor for older iPhones, so there is no specific app recommendation here. If you investigate another editor yourself, check four things before relying on it: whether it actually expands an existing image, whether it exports a file that iOS can use as wallpaper, what processing or usage limits apply, and whether its language and regional availability match your phone.
Be especially careful with apps that advertise “wallpaper fit” but only zoom or crop. A crop can make an image fill the screen, yet it cannot preserve a subject that lies outside the chosen crop. The defining test for an extender is whether the output contains newly generated content outside the source image’s original borders.
What is the difference between Extend and Image Playground?
Both are Apple Intelligence image features, but they solve different wallpaper problems. Extend starts with your existing photograph and adds canvas around it. Image Playground creates an original image from a description, selected styles, or a source photo.

Apple describes Image Playground as capable of creating images intended for uses such as Lock Screen wallpapers. Choose it when you want a new scene or a different visual style. Choose Extend when the photograph itself is important and the problem is simply that its borders do not fit the wallpaper framing.
How should I choose between extending a photo and generating a new wallpaper?
Use the decision points below rather than treating the two tools as interchangeable.

Family portraits, travel photos, pets, products, and other specific moments are good candidates when you want to retain the actual image. The tool’s purpose is to add surrounding area, so the source remains the anchor of the composition.
Choose Image Playground when the source photo is the wrong shape or mood
If the available picture has no useful background to continue, generating a new image may be more practical than asking an extender to invent a large area around a tightly framed subject. Image Playground can start from a description, a style, or a source photo rather than requiring you to preserve the original scene exactly.
Use the wallpaper picker only after the image itself is ready
The wallpaper gallery is the final placement step. It lets you select the saved image and choose whether to use a wallpaper pair or customize the Home Screen. It is not the place where Apple’s documented Extend generation occurs.

Extend gives you framing controls, so the most useful improvements happen before generation.
- Leave visual breathing room: Do not place the subject against the frame edge if the Lock Screen layout needs space above or beside it.
- Move the frame deliberately: Pinching or dragging changes how much of the background is requested. Make small adjustments and inspect the composition before confirming.
- Protect the subject: Keep faces, logos, pets, and other details inside the original image area whenever possible. The tool is adding background; it is not a substitute for reconstructing a subject that has already been cropped away.
- Save a version you can recognize: The documented flow ends with two Done taps. Use a descriptive filename or album if you create several alternatives, so the correct expanded image is easy to identify in the wallpaper picker.
- Preview before committing: Select the saved image in the wallpaper gallery and check its placement. If the composition is still tight, return to Photos and generate another version with a wider frame.
These are workflow choices, not guarantees about what the generator will place in every newly created area. The output is generated by Apple Intelligence, and the amount of additional content depends on the frame you request and the service’s availability at that time.

What are the practical limits of Apple’s wallpaper extension?
The feature has several boundaries that are easy to miss in a short tutorial:
- It is not universal hardware: The native command is tied to Apple Intelligence-capable iPhones, beginning with the models listed above.
- It is not universal geography or language: Apple’s availability conditions include supported language and region.
- It is not an unlimited offline operation: Some server-assisted features have usage limits, so eligibility does not guarantee unlimited generations.
- It is an image edit, not an automatic wallpaper assignment: You must save the result in Photos and then select it in Wallpaper settings.
- It expands borders rather than recovering missing original pixels: The generated area is newly created around the source image. If the original file never contained part of a subject, Extend cannot restore that exact photographic detail.
- It does not replace composition decisions: You still decide how far to enlarge the background and where to place the frame.
What is the complete workflow from photo to wallpaper?
Use this condensed checklist when you are ready to do the job:
- Confirm that the phone is an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, an iPhone 16 model, or a later Apple Intelligence-supported model.
- Confirm that Apple Intelligence is available for the phone’s language and region.
- Open the source image in Photos.
- Tap Edit > Tools > Extend.
- Pinch or drag to enlarge the background, then drag the frame edge to set the crop.
- Tap Extend to generate the expanded image.
- Tap Done, then Done again to save.
- Open Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos.
- Select the saved image and tap Add.
- Choose Set as Wallpaper Pair or Customize Home Screen.
If any step fails, identify whether the problem is hardware eligibility, language or region availability, a usage limit, or simply being in the wrong app screen. That diagnosis is more useful than repeatedly searching the wallpaper picker for a control that exists only in Photos.
What should I use if I want a completely new wallpaper?
Use Image Playground on a supported device. It can create original images from text descriptions, styles, or source photos, including images intended for Lock Screen wallpapers. This is a different workflow from extending an existing photo: you are directing the creation of a new image rather than asking Apple Intelligence to continue the borders of one already in Photos.
After creating an image, the practical final step is still the wallpaper gallery. Save or select the generated image, open the wallpaper controls, and choose how it should be used on the Lock Screen and Home Screen.
Does iOS 27’s wallpaper extension work on every iPhone?
No. The native AI extender is limited to Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhones, with Apple’s support list starting at iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later. Supported language, region, and usage limits can also affect availability.
