Yes—Steam officially supports the Xbox 360 controller through Steam Input. Plug a wired controller directly into USB, or pair the official Xbox 360 wireless controller for Windows with a compatible Xbox 360 wireless receiver. In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Controller, enable the Xbox 360 configuration-support option, and verify that the device appears under detected controllers. Then configure the individual game from its Library menu and test the controls in-game. If Steam detects the controller but the game ignores it, the likely issue is the title’s controller support or its own input settings, not the USB connection.
What you need before connecting an Xbox 360 controller
There are two supported hardware paths:
- Wired: an Xbox 360 controller with its USB cable. Connect it directly to the Windows PC; no separate receiver is required.
- Wireless: an official Xbox 360 wireless controller for Windows and a compatible Xbox 360 wireless receiver for Windows. The receiver is a separate piece of hardware.
Steam’s controller documentation identifies both the Microsoft wired controller and the Xbox 360 wireless controller used with its Windows receiver as supported devices. Do not assume that a generic Bluetooth dongle or a newer Xbox wireless adapter is interchangeable with an Xbox 360 receiver. Compatibility for those alternatives is not established by Steam’s Xbox 360 guidance, so verify the exact receiver type before buying replacement hardware.
Use the wired route if you want the fewest setup dependencies. Wireless is more convenient for a couch or living-room PC, but it adds receiver compatibility and wireless pairing as additional points that can fail.

- Open Steam and select Steam in the upper-left menu.
- Choose Settings, then select Controller.
- Find the Xbox 360 configuration-support option and enable it.
- Check the detected-controller area. The connected controller should be listed there.
If the device appears in Steam’s controller settings, the physical connection and Steam’s basic detection path are working. You can now configure a particular game rather than changing every title’s controls.
How do I connect a wireless Xbox 360 controller to Steam?
A wireless Xbox 360 controller for Windows requires a compatible Xbox 360 wireless receiver. Steam cannot replace that receiver; the receiver is what gives the PC a wireless connection to the controller.
- Plug the Xbox 360 wireless receiver into the Windows PC.
- Install or allow Windows to use the appropriate device support for that receiver if Windows requests it.
- Turn on the Xbox 360 controller and use the receiver’s connection process to pair the controller.
- Open Steam and go to Steam > Settings > Controller.
- Enable the Xbox 360 configuration-support option.
- Confirm that Steam lists the wireless controller among detected devices.
The exact indicator lights and pairing sequence can vary with the receiver hardware, but the Steam-side check is the same as with a wired controller: the controller must appear as detected before you edit a game’s layout.
If the receiver is not recognized, do not substitute a generic Bluetooth adapter or assume that a current-generation Xbox adapter will work. Steam’s supported-hardware list specifically describes the Xbox 360 wireless controller with its compatible Windows receiver; treat other combinations as unverified until the receiver manufacturer documents support.
Where do I enable Xbox 360 controller support in Steam?
In the desktop Steam client, open Steam > Settings > Controller, then enable the configuration-support setting for Xbox 360 controllers. Valve’s setup guidance says to connect the controller before configuring it, and detected compatible devices appear on this screen.
This setting allows Steam Input to translate the controller’s inputs for games. It is separate from a game’s own controller-support setting: enabling Xbox 360 support in Steam does not make a title that accepts only keyboard and mouse suddenly become a native gamepad title.
If the controller is missing from the detected-device list, stop at this stage and fix detection before trying to edit a game. Steam’s per-game configuration option can be unavailable when no controller is connected, so opening a game’s layout editor repeatedly will not solve a hardware or receiver problem.

How do I configure an Xbox 360 controller for one Steam game?
Steam lets you create a layout for an individual game, so you can correct one title without rebuilding your controls globally.
Desktop Steam
- Open the Library.
- Right-click the game you want to play.
- Open the game’s controller-configuration editor.
- Start with the default gamepad layout.
- Select the controller region or button you want to change.
- Assign the desired action, then save the layout.
Big Picture mode
- Open the game in your library.
- Open the game’s management menu.
- Choose Manage Game.
- Select Controller Configuration.
- Choose a layout and edit individual bindings as needed.
Use the default gamepad layout first. It is usually the clearest way to determine whether the game’s expected actions already match the Xbox 360 controller’s A, B, X and Y face buttons, bumpers, sticks, D-pad and triggers. If one action is wrong, change that binding instead of replacing the entire layout.
What is the difference between native and legacy Steam Input layouts?
A game with native Steam Input support can expose its actions to Steam, allowing a layout to bind controls to those named actions. A game without native support can still use a legacy layout that maps controller input to XInput, keyboard or mouse commands.
Choose the native-style action layout when the game presents its own actions in Steam’s editor. Choose a legacy layout when the title does not expose those actions or expects a conventional XInput gamepad. Legacy mapping is especially useful for older PC games and games that were designed primarily for keyboard and mouse.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeep in mind that a keyboard or mouse mapping is a translation layer, not proof that the game supports a controller natively. Menus may behave differently, on-screen prompts may still show keyboard keys, and some actions may need separate bindings for gameplay and menus.
How do I verify that the controller works in the game?
After Steam detects the controller and you save the game’s layout, launch the title and check its own input settings. Look for a controller, gamepad or input-device option, then confirm that the game is listening to the Xbox 360 controller rather than keyboard and mouse.
Test more than one control:
- Move both analog sticks and confirm that movement and camera controls respond.
- Press the A, B, X and Y face buttons and verify the corresponding actions.
- Check both bumpers and the D-pad.
- Pull LT and RT gradually as well as fully, because they are analog triggers rather than simple on/off buttons.
- Open a menu and confirm that navigation works there too.
Some games switch their on-screen prompts only after they receive controller input. Others continue to display keyboard symbols even while accepting the gamepad. Prompt artwork alone does not establish whether the controller is functioning; actual input response does.

Why are LT and RT behaving differently from the other buttons?
LT and RT are analog inputs. A soft pull and a full pull can produce different values, while a face button normally reports a press without the same range of travel.

Steam Input can apply a threshold so that a trigger is treated as an action once it passes a chosen point. If a game expects a full trigger pull, a threshold can prevent a light touch from activating it. If the game uses the trigger for acceleration, aiming or another variable action, forcing it into a digital button may remove that range of control.
If a trigger feels unresponsive, open the game’s controller layout and inspect the trigger binding before replacing hardware. The game may also apply its own dead zone or activation behavior after Steam sends the input.
Why is Steam not detecting my Xbox 360 controller?
Separate detection problems from game-compatibility problems. If the controller does not appear under Steam > Settings > Controller, the failure is before the game starts.
- Reconnect the hardware. Unplug and reconnect a wired controller, or disconnect and reconnect the wireless receiver.
- Check the connection path. For wired play, try a different USB port. For wireless play, confirm that the receiver is the Xbox 360-compatible Windows type rather than a generic Bluetooth or newer Xbox adapter.
- Return to Steam’s controller page. Reopen Steam > Settings > Controller and check the detected-device list.
- Enable the Xbox 360 option. The configuration-support setting must be enabled for Steam Input to handle the controller through this path.
- Only then open the game’s editor. If Steam still shows no device, per-game binding changes are premature.
A missing controller in Steam usually points to the cable, USB connection, receiver, wireless pairing or support-setting stage. A controller that appears in Steam but fails only after a game launches points to the title’s input support or configuration instead.
Why does the game open but ignore controller input?
Steam Support notes that not every Steam game supports controllers. A game can launch normally while accepting only keyboard and mouse input, so successful detection in Steam is not a guarantee of in-game compatibility.
Check the game’s own settings for a controller or gamepad toggle. Then revisit the title’s Steam controller configuration and confirm that the correct layout is active. For a game without native Steam Input support, try a legacy layout that maps the Xbox 360 controller to XInput, keyboard or mouse controls.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If the title has no controller support and a legacy mapping still cannot reproduce an essential action, the limitation is the game rather than the controller. In that case, keyboard-and-mouse input may remain the only supported control method.
What should I do when the buttons are mapped incorrectly?
Open the game’s controller-configuration editor and change only the affected bindings first. Steam Input supports game-specific layouts, so a correction for one title does not have to become a universal change.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- If A and B are reversed, select each face-button binding and assign the action expected by the game.
- If the right stick controls the wrong function, open the right-stick region and choose the intended camera or pointer action.
- If a menu button does nothing, bind it to the game’s pause, menu or equivalent action.
- If the title expects keyboard keys, use a legacy layout and assign the corresponding key to the controller button.
Save the layout, launch the game, and check both gameplay and menus. A mapping can appear correct in a gameplay scene while leaving menu navigation or a secondary action unassigned.
Wired versus wireless: which Xbox 360 setup is better for Steam?
| Consideration | Wired controller | Wireless controller |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | Direct USB connection | Wireless link through a compatible Xbox 360 receiver for Windows |
| Extra hardware | No separate receiver | Receiver required |
| Convenience | Simple desk setup, but a cable reaches the PC | Cable-free play, useful for a couch or living-room PC |
| Troubleshooting | Primarily cable, USB-port and Steam-detection checks | Adds receiver recognition and wireless-pairing checks |
| Replacement decision | Replace the controller if its cable or electronics fail | An existing working controller may need only a compatible receiver |
Choose wired when reliability and the shortest setup matter most. Choose wireless when distance from the PC is more important and you already have, or can verify, the correct Xbox 360 receiver. Do not buy a receiver based solely on the words “Xbox wireless”; the Xbox 360 receiver requirement is specific.
Can I use one layout for every Steam game?
You can keep a general gamepad layout, but different titles may expect different actions or input types. A game-specific layout is safer when one title has unusual controls, keyboard-only actions or a trigger that needs a custom threshold.
Start with the default layout and modify only the games that need changes. This keeps troubleshooting local: if a button is wrong in one title, you can correct that title without creating a new problem in games that already work.

What are the most common setup mistakes?
- Opening the game editor before connecting the controller: Steam may not offer the per-game configuration option when no controller is detected.
- Assuming every Steam game supports gamepads: Steam’s controller support does not override a title’s own input limitations.
- Using the wrong wireless adapter: an Xbox 360 controller for Windows needs its compatible Xbox 360 receiver; generic Bluetooth and newer Xbox adapters should not be treated as substitutes.
- Changing global bindings first: use a game-specific layout when only one title has a problem.
- Treating triggers like ordinary buttons: LT and RT are analog, so thresholds and the game’s own handling can affect the result.
- Judging compatibility by button prompts: a game may accept controller input while continuing to display keyboard prompts.
What is the fastest reliable troubleshooting order?
Follow the signal path from the hardware to the game rather than changing several settings at once:

- Confirm whether the controller is wired or wireless.
- For wired play, reconnect USB. For wireless play, verify the Xbox 360 receiver and pairing.
- Open Steam > Settings > Controller.
- Enable Xbox 360 configuration support.
- Confirm that Steam lists the controller as detected.
- Open the individual game’s controller-configuration editor.
- Apply the default layout, then fix only incorrect bindings.
- Launch the game and inspect its own controller setting.
- If the game still ignores input, determine whether it supports controllers at all.
This order prevents a common diagnostic error: trying to repair a game’s bindings when Steam never detected the device, or blaming the controller when the title simply has no controller support.
Should you use a wired or wireless Xbox 360 controller with Steam?
Both are valid Steam Input setups. A wired Xbox 360 controller is the straightforward choice because it connects directly over USB and eliminates receiver compatibility. A wireless controller is preferable when cable-free play matters, provided you have the correct Xbox 360 wireless receiver for Windows.
In either case, the dependable sequence is the same: connect the hardware, enable Xbox 360 support in Steam’s controller settings, verify detection, configure the individual game, and then check the game’s own controller support. Steam can translate inputs for unsupported layouts, but it cannot guarantee that every Steam title accepts a controller.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I configure only one Steam game without changing my other games?
Yes. Open that title’s controller-configuration editor from its Library entry and save the changes there. A game-specific layout lets you correct unusual bindings while leaving games that already use the default gamepad mapping unchanged.
Why is the controller-configuration option missing from a game’s menu?
Steam may hide or disable that option when no compatible controller is connected or detected. Return to Steam > Settings > Controller, reconnect the hardware, and confirm that the device appears before reopening the game menu.
Do Xbox 360 triggers support partial presses in Steam games?
LT and RT report analog values, so a game can distinguish a light pull from a full pull. Steam Input can add a threshold when you want a trigger to act like a digital button, but the game may apply its own trigger behavior afterward.
Will a wireless Xbox 360 controller work with any Bluetooth USB adapter?
Do not assume it will. Steam’s documented wireless path uses an Xbox 360 wireless controller for Windows with a compatible Xbox 360 wireless receiver; generic Bluetooth adapters and newer Xbox adapters are not established substitutes by that guidance.
What if Steam detects the controller but the game still shows keyboard controls?
First check whether the game supports controllers and whether its own input setting is enabled. A title can accept a Steam Input legacy mapping while continuing to display keyboard prompts, so the prompts alone do not prove that the controller failed.
