A 45W USB-C power bank can supply up to 45 watts from a compatible port when the bank and connected device negotiate a supported USB Power Delivery (USB PD) profile. It does not force 45W into every device, and the “USB-C” connector alone does not guarantee 45W. Whether it charges your phone, tablet, or laptop—and how quickly—depends on the device’s input requirements, the bank’s port profile, and sometimes the cable.

What does 45W mean on a power bank?

Watts measure the rate at which electrical power can be delivered. A 45W rating describes the maximum output capability under supported conditions; it is not a promise that every connected device will receive 45W. USB PD lets a compatible charger and device negotiate an available power level, and the device draws only what it requires. The USB Implementers Forum describes this as allowing each device “to take only the power it requires.” USB-IF’s USB Power Delivery overview explains the negotiation framework.

Actual charging can be below 45W because the device accepts less, the bank does not offer the profile the device needs, or the device is drawing power for its own operation. A device that needs more power than the bank offers may charge slowly, pause charging under heavy workload, or not charge; the result depends on the specific products and their manuals.

USB-C is the connector; USB PD handles power negotiation

USB-C describes a connector system, not a guaranteed charging speed. USB-C ports and cables appear on products with different power capabilities. USB PD adds power negotiation and configurable delivery, but both the power bank and the device must support compatible capabilities. A USB-C-shaped output by itself does not prove that the port supports 45W or USB PD. See the USB-IF Type-C overview and its USB PD overview.

What can a 45W power bank charge?

A 45W bank is plausible for many phones and tablets, as well as some lower-demand laptop charging situations. That is a general compatibility guide, not a guarantee for any particular model. A phone may accept less than 45W; a laptop may require more power, a particular USB PD profile, or a specific minimum input to charge reliably, especially while in use.

For a reliable answer about a named device, compare the device manufacturer’s USB-C input requirements with the exact output specification for the bank’s USB-C port. Both must support a compatible USB PD profile. The wattage printed on the bank is not enough to establish compatibility with a specific laptop.

How to check whether your device will charge

  1. Find the device’s charging input requirements. Check the manufacturer’s manual or official specifications for USB-C charging, the required or supported power level, and any USB PD profile requirements.
  2. Check the bank’s exact port specification. Look up the output voltage and current combinations for the USB-C port you will use, and confirm whether it supports USB PD. A 45W headline rating may not describe every port or every multiport configuration.
  3. Check whether output is shared. If you connect more than one device, consult the bank’s documentation for how it allocates power across ports. Do not assume each port continues to provide its single-device maximum.
  4. Match the cable to the power configuration. Confirm the cable’s current rating if the voltage and current combination requires it. A 45W label alone does not mean you universally need a 5A cable.
  5. Use the device and bank manuals to interpret the result. If the device’s input need exceeds the bank’s available output, or their supported profiles do not match, charging may be slow, may stop under load, or may not work.

Does a 45W bank need a 5A USB-C cable?

Not automatically. USB-IF’s USB Type-C Specification, Release 2.0 (August 2019) says standard Type-C cable assemblies are rated for 3A; appropriately designed, electronically marked cable assemblies may support 5A. Whether a cable’s rating matters depends on the voltage and current used by the negotiated power configuration and on the equipment. Check the bank and device specifications rather than buying a 5A cable solely because the bank says 45W.

How does 45W compare with USB PD’s limits?

45W is one product output rating, not the ceiling of USB PD. USB-IF says USB PD Revision 3.1, announced in 2021, enabled power delivery up to 240W, with fixed voltage levels of 28V, 36V, and 48V for 140W, 180W, and 240W respectively. Before Revision 3.1, the USB PD ceiling was 100W using 20V and 5A USB Type-C cables. These are protocol capabilities—not promises about what an individual power bank can output. Check the bank’s own port specification for its actual limits. USB-IF’s USB PD overview provides the revision context.

What else matters when comparing 45W power banks?

  • USB-C port output profile: Check the voltage and current supported by the specific port, not just the bank’s headline wattage.
  • USB PD support: Confirm the bank offers USB PD profiles compatible with the device.
  • Multiport allocation: Find out whether connecting another device changes the power available from the USB-C port you plan to use.
  • Device input requirements: Compare the manufacturer’s stated charging input and profile requirements with the bank output.
  • Cable rating: Check the cable’s current rating when required by the chosen configuration; do not assume every 45W setup requires a 5A cable.
  • Battery energy capacity: Wattage describes output power, not how much stored energy the bank holds. Capacity is a separate specification and does not, by itself, establish charging speed.
