USB-C is the connector shape—not a promise of a particular speed, charging limit, or display capability. On Framework laptops, those features vary by model, processor, and port or Expansion Card slot. Identify your exact configuration first, then match a charger, cable, monitor, or dock to what that port supports.
Why Framework USB-C ports differ
Framework publishes separate port information for Laptop 13, Laptop 12, Laptop 13 Pro, and Laptop 16. Even within a model family, processor generation and port position can change which protocols and power roles are available. Use the support matrix for your exact machine rather than assuming one model’s specifications apply to another.
In the matrix, match the laptop and processor first, then check the numbered port. Framework’s diagrams define those numbers; they may not correspond to how you informally describe a side or position. Some configurations also require particular firmware for full Thunderbolt capability.

- Framework Laptop 12 port matrix
- Framework Laptop 13 Pro port matrix
- Framework Laptop 16 AMD Ryzen AI 300 specifications
What the published port differences mean
Framework’s matrices show why a USB-C port should be checked for its specific data protocol, charging support, and video output. For example, the documented Laptop 13 11th-generation Intel configuration lists Thunderbolt 4 and DisplayPort 1.4 on all four numbered ports, with PD 3.0 and 20V/5A input. That specification belongs to that configuration; it should not be carried over to newer Laptop 13 systems.

For Laptop 12, the Intel Core Series 3 matrix lists Thunderbolt 4 on ports 1 and 3 and USB 3.2 Gen 2 on ports 2 and 4, with port-specific output limits. Its 13th-generation Intel configuration has separate entries. Laptop 12 product specifications also distinguish upper and lower ports, including their Thunderbolt, USB, Power Delivery, and DisplayPort Alt Mode functions.
Laptop 13 Pro has its own matrix: it lists Thunderbolt 4 and DisplayPort 2.1 on its four ports, with PD 3.2 EPR details. Laptop 16’s AMD Ryzen AI 300 specifications describe six user-selectable Expansion Card positions; functions vary by position, with USB4 and DisplayPort output in some, USB 3.2 and/or USB-A in others, and separate USB-C behavior for the graphics module. Can you charge a Framework Laptop over USB-C?
Yes, the cited Framework Laptop 13 AMD Ryzen 7040 and Ryzen AI 300 setup guides say all ports can be used for USB charging. That is not a universal charger-wattage specification for every Framework laptop. Framework’s matrices list model-specific power input and output details, so check the entry for your model and port before selecting a USB-C Power Delivery charger.
Use a cable rated for the charging task as well as a compatible charger. Neither the connector alone nor a charger’s advertised maximum establishes what a particular laptop port will accept; the laptop’s documented input requirements and the cable’s rating both matter.

Which port should you use for a monitor?
Look for DisplayPort output, DisplayPort Alt Mode, or the relevant Thunderbolt or USB4 support in the matrix for your machine and port. Framework’s Laptop 13 AMD Ryzen 7040 and Ryzen AI 300 guides illustrate slot-specific display capabilities: certain upper positions support USB4 and DisplayPort, while lower positions have their own USB and display functions.
Do not infer a monitor’s maximum resolution or refresh rate from the USB-C shape. The Expansion Card listing includes DisplayPort Alt Mode and a maximum-resolution specification, but that does not establish the same display mode for every host platform, slot, cable, or monitor combination. Confirm the intended mode against the laptop documentation and the display connection’s requirements.

Using a dock, hub, or USB-C Expansion Card
Docks and hubs
A USB-C or Thunderbolt dock may suit a setup with several peripherals or displays when the selected laptop port provides the needed data and display functions. Check both the port matrix and the dock’s own power, data, and video requirements. Framework’s cited documentation does not validate a particular third-party dock or establish one universal dock configuration.
Framework USB-C Expansion Card
The Framework USB-C Expansion Card provides a USB-C receptacle and lists USB4, charging, and DisplayPort Alt Mode features. Framework says it passes through protocols supported by the processor; it does not make every slot equivalent. The product listing specifically says Laptop 13 Intel platforms support Thunderbolt 4/USB4, 20V/5A charging, and DisplayPort Alt Mode, while Ryzen behavior depends on the particular slot. Check your laptop’s matrix before relying on any one function.
