This was a historical shutdown, not a 2026 service alert. USA.NET ended its free Net@ddress webmail tier on July 31, 2001, because advertising revenue no longer covered operating costs. Existing users could keep their @usa.net address and stored messages by moving to the paid Net@ddress Messaging Center, initially reported at $29.99 per year. Users who did not migrate were warned that their accounts, addresses and messages could be canceled and permanently deleted.
What USA.NET actually discontinued
USA.NET discontinued the free consumer version of its Net@ddress service. Net@ddress, Netaddress and USA.NET webmail refer to the same service family, rather than three unrelated products.
The announcement did not establish that every USA.NET email or business operation was shutting down. Instead, the company offered a paid continuation, the Net@ddress Messaging Center, for users who wanted to retain their existing mailbox.
Wired reported that USA.NET had more than four million users and that advertising income was insufficient to pay for operating the service. The change was therefore a shift from free, ad-supported email to a subscription model.

When did the free service end?
The announced deadline was July 31, 2001. Reports describing the paid service as starting August 1 refer to the next day, after the free tier ended at the close of July 31.
A discussion-board post later claimed that USA.NET extended the enrollment deadline to August 7. That is a user report, not the original deadline or a comparably strong company announcement: emaildiscussions.com discussion.
What did the paid replacement cost?
| Offer | Reported price | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Existing-user introductory subscription | $29.99 per year | Available to existing users who enrolled by the July 31 deadline, according to contemporaneous reports. |
| Reported regular price | $49.99 per year | Reported price after the introductory period; not a permanent $29.99 rate. |
The paid service was advertised as preserving the existing address and stored messages. Reports also described an ad-free interface. One contemporaneous account said payment required a credit card: CIOL’s report.

What happened to users who did nothing?
The warning was consequential, not merely a pricing notice. Users who failed to subscribe were told their accounts would be canceled and their email addresses and stored messages permanently deleted. That meant losing both the mailbox contents and the established @usa.net identity.

- Subscribe to Net@ddress Messaging Center before the deadline if keeping the old address and mailbox was worth the annual fee.
- Save important data elsewhere by forwarding messages, copying essential records, and preserving contacts before access ended.
User discussions mention address-book export and migration steps, but the sources do not preserve a verified official USA.NET export procedure. Do not treat those forum instructions as an authenticated company workflow.

Why the announcement upset people
Long-established addresses were hard to replace
An email address was often embedded in personal contacts, mailing lists, employment records, retailers, financial accounts and other services. Abandoning it required finding every sender and changing every account that used it.
“Free for life” was a user expectation
Some former users recalled USA.NET marketing the mailbox as “free email for life.” Those recollections explain the anger, but the available evidence does not establish the exact original advertising language as a contractual guarantee. The company’s later decision shows that users understood “free” as a long-term promise while USA.NET treated the free tier as economically unsustainable.

Why ad-supported email failed in the dot-com downturn
Free webmail had substantial costs: storage, network bandwidth, servers, technical support, spam and abuse controls, and account administration. A large audience did not automatically produce enough advertising revenue to cover those expenses. When online advertising weakened, providers had to charge users, reduce service, or close a tier.
USA.NET’s response illustrates that vulnerability. The company did not simply erase the service without an alternative; it attempted to convert the free audience into paying subscribers. That protected continuity for people willing to pay, but it ended the assumption that a mailbox could remain free indefinitely.
USA.NET, Net@ddress and AmExMail are not the same event
AmExMail was a separate American Express-associated service that used the USA.NET platform. Its reported shutdown date was April 30, 2002, months after the 2001 Net@ddress announcement. The AmExMail notice reportedly offered a paid USA.NET migration at $29.99 per year and warned that AmExMail accounts and messages would be deleted after closure.

That later event should not be used as the date for USA.NET’s free Net@ddress shutdown. The two services had related infrastructure but different brands and deadlines.

@usa.netidentity. - Preserved stored messages according to the announcement.
- Avoided changing every contact and account immediately.
- Removed advertising from the paid interface.
- Required an annual payment, with the introductory rate subject to change.
- Left the user dependent on one commercial provider.
Move to another provider
- Avoided the new annual charge.
- Created an opportunity to leave a provider whose business model had changed.

- Required updating banks, employers, retailers, mailing lists and personal contacts.
- Did not eliminate the risk that another free provider might later add fees or change service.
Users at the time discussed Hotmail and Yahoo Mail as alternatives. Those references are historical context, not recommendations about current plans or reliability.
What exists today?
The current Net@ddress site identifies the brand with USA.NET and SilverSky: netaddress.com and netaddress.usa.net. The page currently signals 1 GB standard storage, optional increases to 2 GB, 4 GB or 8 GB, virus and spam protection, filters, autoresponders, web and desktop-client access, and U.S.-only toll-free support.
No public price was visible in the material reviewed on August 16, 2026. The 2001 $29.99 introductory rate should not be assumed to remain available. A reader specifically seeking a legacy-style address should verify eligibility, pricing, recovery options and migration tools directly with the current provider.
