For most ordinary purchases, choose UPI when the merchant offers a working UPI QR, payment link or in-app checkout. NPCI describes UPI merchant payments as instant and available 24/7. Use IMPS when the seller gives you bank-account details and needs an immediate transfer. Use NEFT when a bank transfer is acceptable and half-hourly batch processing is fine, particularly when the amount may exceed an applicable instant-payment limit. The best choice depends on the merchant’s acceptance method, urgency, amount, your bank’s limits and the beneficiary details—not simply on which rail sounds fastest.

At a glance

Name Best for Key spec Timing Amount / charges Checked
UPI An offered merchant QR, intent flow or other supported UPI checkout Normal NPCI FAQ limit of ₹1 lakh per transaction; category-specific verified-merchant exceptions can be higher Instant, 24/7 Fees depend on the payment arrangement; do not assume every UPI flow is fee-free Oct 2026
IMPS An immediate transfer to the merchant’s bank details NPCI publishes ₹5 lakh per transaction outside SMS and IVR channels Instant, 24/7, including holidays Check your bank’s current IMPS tariff and channel limit Oct 2026
NEFT A bank transfer where batch timing is acceptable No RBI systemwide amount ceiling; the bank may set its own limit Available 24/7; processed in half-hourly batches Online outward NEFT from savings accounts has no customer charge under RBI guidance; other categories have permitted maximums plus GST Oct 2026

Which payment should you use for a merchant?

Match the payment rail to what the merchant actually accepts. A UPI QR or checkout is normally the simplest option for a standard purchase. An IMPS transfer is the practical fallback when the merchant supplies an account number and IFSC and wants money immediately. NEFT is the better fit for a bank transfer that does not need instant settlement, or for an amount that your bank cannot send through an instant channel.

  • Choose UPI for a shop, restaurant, service provider or online checkout displaying a supported UPI option.
  • Choose IMPS when the merchant specifically requests an immediate account-to-account transfer.
  • Choose NEFT when the merchant accepts account-and-IFSC payments and a half-hourly processing cycle is acceptable.
  • Ask the merchant before paying if the instructions are unclear. A successful transfer to the wrong account may not be reversible.

These are convenience and process recommendations, not a guarantee that every merchant, bank or transaction qualifies for the same limit. Your bank can apply lower internal limits, additional authentication or channel restrictions.

How does a merchant UPI payment work?

In a merchant UPI transaction, the merchant’s acquiring bank or payment arrangement provides an acceptance route such as a QR code, an intent hand-off or an integrated checkout. You select the displayed payee, enter or confirm the amount, authenticate in your UPI app and receive a transaction result. NPCI says the merchant receives the funds immediately into the merchant or pool bank account specified in its agreement; the merchant’s own dashboard or settlement display can differ.

Paying by QR

  1. Open your bank or UPI app and scan the merchant’s QR.
  2. Check the payee or beneficiary name shown by the app and compare it with the business you intend to pay.
  3. Enter the exact purchase amount if it is not prefilled.
  4. Review the amount and payee again, then authenticate with your UPI PIN or the method your bank requires.
  5. Keep the transaction reference and show the success screen to the merchant if requested.

Do not scan a QR sent by an unknown person who says you must scan it to receive a refund or collect money. A QR used for payment normally initiates a debit from your account; receiving funds follows a different flow.

Paying through an online checkout

Select UPI at the merchant’s checkout, choose your preferred app or enter the requested UPI details, and confirm the payee and amount in the authorization screen. A browser redirect, app hand-off or delayed confirmation can make the merchant page appear incomplete even after your bank has processed the debit, so check the transaction history before attempting a second payment.

What UPI transaction limit applies to a merchant payment?

NPCI’s general UPI FAQ states a normal limit of ₹1 lakh per transaction. That figure is not a universal promise that every merchant QR can accept ₹1 lakh: your bank, app, account type and risk controls can impose lower limits.

NPCI’s August 28, 2025 circular raises limits for specified categories when the merchant is classified as a Verified Merchant. Eligible business and merchant payments, travel, insurance and other listed categories can have a ₹5 lakh per-transaction limit, while eligible jewellery payments can have a ₹2 lakh per-transaction limit. The circular also specifies classifications and, where provided, 24-hour cumulative limits. It does not turn every shop QR into a ₹5 lakh payment route.

UPI situation Published amount Qualification
Normal transaction in NPCI’s general FAQ ₹1 lakh per transaction General figure; bank and app limits may be lower
Specified verified-merchant categories Up to ₹5 lakh per transaction Only the categories and merchant classifications covered by NPCI’s August 2025 circular
Eligible jewellery category Up to ₹2 lakh per transaction Applies only where the circular’s eligibility conditions are met

Before authorizing a large payment, look at the amount accepted by your app and ask the merchant whether its acquiring arrangement supports the category-specific limit. The applicable circular is available in NPCI’s August 2025 UPI limit addendum.

When is IMPS better than UPI?

IMPS is the better choice when the merchant gives you bank-transfer instructions instead of a usable UPI checkout and needs the money immediately. NPCI describes IMPS as an instant, 24/7 service, including holidays. You normally use your bank’s fund-transfer screen, select IMPS, add or select the beneficiary, enter the amount and authenticate.

IMPS amount and channel limits

NPCI publishes a ₹5 lakh per-transaction IMPS limit outside SMS and IVR channels. Your bank can set a lower limit, require a newly added beneficiary to cool off, or restrict the amount by app, web banking, branch or card-based channel. Confirm the limit in the bank’s current screen before promising a merchant that a transfer will go through.

Information you need

  • The merchant’s account number and bank name.
  • The applicable IFSC, if your bank requests it for the selected IMPS route.
  • The exact amount and any reference or invoice number the merchant asks you to include.
  • A beneficiary name that matches the merchant’s instructions; treat a mismatch as a reason to stop and verify.

There is no single IMPS customer fee established for every bank and channel. Check the tariff shown by your bank or the confirmation screen rather than assuming that IMPS is free or that a historical fee applies today. NPCI’s product information is available at NPCI’s IMPS page.

Is NEFT suitable for paying a merchant?

NEFT works when the merchant accepts a bank transfer and does not require an instant confirmation. RBI says NEFT is available around the clock but “presently operates in batches on half-hourly intervals throughout the day.” Beneficiary credit can be expected within two hours after batch settlement, although the exact experience depends on the banks and whether the beneficiary details are valid.

NEFT has no RBI-wide amount ceiling

RBI’s FAQ says there is no systemwide NEFT transfer-amount limit imposed by RBI. Individual banks may still set limits based on the account, channel, customer profile or security controls. Therefore, NEFT can be useful for a payment larger than an applicable UPI or IMPS ceiling, but you must confirm your bank’s own maximum before initiating it.

Account details matter more than the displayed name

For NEFT, RBI says credit is made on the account number supplied in the payment instruction. Enter the merchant’s account number and IFSC carefully, review the confirmation screen and retain the reference number. A familiar-looking beneficiary name is not a substitute for checking the numeric account details.

What do UPI, IMPS and NEFT cost?

Cost depends on the route, account type, bank and payment arrangement. Do not convert a no-MDR policy for prescribed BHIM-UPI and BHIM-UPI-QR modes into a promise that every payer, wallet-funded payment, provider arrangement or merchant service has no possible fee. Review the amount and any fee shown before authorizing.

UPI charges

An older RBI publication records the no-MDR policy for prescribed BHIM-UPI and BHIM-UPI-QR modes from January 1, 2020. MDR is a merchant-side pricing concept and is not interchangeable with every customer fee, wallet arrangement or bank tariff. The applicable payment screen and your provider’s current terms control your transaction.

IMPS charges

No universal IMPS customer tariff is established for an unidentified bank. Some banks price IMPS by amount or channel, while others may include it in an account package. Check the current schedule in your bank app, website or confirmation screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NEFT charges

RBI guidance says online outward NEFT for savings-account customers has carried no customer charge since January 1, 2020. For other outward NEFT transactions, the originating bank’s permitted maximum charges are:

Transfer amount Maximum charge permitted by RBI guidance
Up to ₹10,000 ₹2.50 plus applicable GST
Above ₹10,000 through ₹1 lakh ₹5 plus applicable GST
Above ₹1 lakh through ₹2 lakh ₹15 plus applicable GST
Above ₹2 lakh ₹25 plus applicable GST

Those are permitted ceilings for the specified categories, not a guarantee that every bank charges them. RBI says the destination bank does not levy an inward NEFT charge.

How do you pay a merchant safely?

Speed does not make an incorrect payment recoverable. Use a short verification routine before every rail, especially when the merchant sends details by message or asks you to pay a new account.

UPI safety checklist

  1. Use the merchant’s official checkout or an in-person QR, not a QR forwarded by an unknown contact.
  2. Confirm the displayed merchant or beneficiary name and amount before entering your UPI PIN.
  3. Read any collect request carefully; reject requests you did not initiate.
  4. Save the transaction ID, date, amount and merchant invoice or order number.

NPCI’s April 2025 direction strengthens beneficiary-name display for the transaction types it specifies, but it does not mean every QR presentation looks identical. NPCI also states that an initiated UPI payment cannot be stopped. If a payment is wrong or disputed, use the UPI app’s complaint path and then the bank’s grievance process; do not assume an automatic reversal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

IMPS safety checklist

  1. Copy the account number and IFSC from the merchant’s verified invoice or official support channel.
  2. Check the beneficiary details on the confirmation page.
  3. Send a small confirmation amount only if the merchant’s process permits it and you have agreed how it will be reconciled.
  4. Keep the IMPS reference number and the merchant’s acknowledgement.

NEFT safety checklist

  1. Validate the account number, IFSC, beneficiary name and invoice reference independently.
  2. Review the amount and scheduled or next-batch information before submitting.
  3. Save the UTR or transaction reference.
  4. Ask the merchant to reconcile using the reference rather than sending a duplicate transfer while the first one is pending.

RBI places responsibility on the sender to provide a correct account number for NEFT credit. An authorized payment to a wrong recipient is not guaranteed to be recovered simply because you report it quickly.

What should you do if the payment is pending or fails?

First determine whether your account was debited. Then use the transaction reference in the app or bank support channel. Do not make a second payment until you know whether the first instruction is completed, rejected or still being reconciled.

UPI shows pending

  • Wait for the app’s stated status window and check the transaction history, not only the merchant browser page.
  • Ask the merchant to check its payment or pool account using your transaction ID.
  • If the status remains pending or becomes failed, raise the complaint in the UPI app and with your bank.
  • If the account was debited but the merchant did not receive confirmation, provide the reference and avoid an untracked duplicate.

IMPS is rejected or delayed

  • Check whether the beneficiary is newly added, the amount exceeds your channel limit or the bank has a temporary service restriction.
  • Confirm account number, IFSC and beneficiary status before retrying.
  • Use the bank’s IMPS dispute or transaction-tracking option with the reference number.
  • Tell the merchant which transfer is under review so it does not treat a second payment as a separate order.

NEFT has not reached the merchant

  • Check the batch and settlement status shown by your bank.
  • Allow for the RBI-described credit window after batch settlement.
  • Ask the merchant’s bank to search using the UTR and beneficiary account details.
  • If the account or IFSC was wrong, contact your bank immediately; do not promise the merchant that the money will be automatically returned.

How should a merchant accept these payments?

For a merchant, UPI acceptance normally requires an acquiring-bank arrangement and an issued QR, intent flow or other integration. NPCI notes that the acquiring bank supplies the acceptance infrastructure. A merchant should display only the QR issued for its own account or approved payment arrangement and keep a reconciliation process for transaction IDs.

Merchant settlement timing can differ from the customer’s success screen. NPCI describes immediate receipt into the merchant or pool account under the agreement, while the merchant’s dashboard, settlement file or bank statement may update on its own schedule. A blank QR stand can display a merchant’s own issued QR, but a payer does not need to buy equipment to make a UPI, IMPS or NEFT payment, and a customer should never rely on a seller’s preprinted QR without checking the payee name.

Which method fits common payment situations?

Situation Recommended rail Reason Check before sending
Buying lunch at a shop with a verified-looking UPI QR UPI Fast checkout with immediate status Merchant name and amount
Paying an invoice where the seller provides account number and IFSC and wants immediate transfer IMPS Instant bank transfer, subject to bank limits Account details, IFSC, channel limit and any fee
Paying a supplier who accepts bank transfer but can wait for processing NEFT 24/7 initiation with half-hourly batch processing Account number, IFSC, batch timing and bank limit
Amount above your bank’s instant-payment limit NEFT if the merchant agrees RBI does not impose a systemwide NEFT ceiling Your bank’s own limit and the merchant’s reconciliation process
Merchant offers only a UPI flow UPI IMPS or NEFT would require separate bank details and matching by the merchant Payee identity, amount and transaction status

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • Assuming every UPI QR supports ₹5 lakh: the higher limit is for specified verified-merchant categories, not every shop.
  • Calling NEFT instant: it is available 24/7 but runs in half-hourly batches.
  • Treating a successful screen as proof of merchant reconciliation: provide the reference if the merchant’s system has not matched it.
  • Using a merchant name alone to validate NEFT: RBI says the account number determines credit.
  • Assuming a universal IMPS fee: the bank and channel set the applicable tariff.
  • Sending a second payment while the first is pending: establish the first transaction’s status first.
  • Entering a UPI PIN to receive money: a PIN authorizes a debit; reject unexpected collect requests.

How were these recommendations selected?

  • Merchant acceptance method: QR or integrated UPI, immediate bank transfer, or account-and-IFSC transfer.
  • Availability and settlement behavior: instant 24/7 processing for UPI and IMPS versus NEFT’s half-hourly batches.
  • Published network limits and their qualifications, including verified-merchant UPI categories.
  • Bank-level controls, customer-charge uncertainty and RBI’s stated NEFT fee ceilings.
  • Risk of beneficiary errors and the evidence available for tracking or disputing a payment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I cancel a UPI payment after entering my PIN?

No. NPCI says an initiated UPI payment cannot be stopped. If the payment is wrong or disputed, record the transaction ID immediately and use the UPI app’s complaint route followed by your bank’s grievance process.

Does a merchant receive UPI money directly into its bank account?

NPCI says funds go immediately to the merchant or pool bank account specified in the merchant’s agreement. The merchant may use a pool account or a settlement arrangement, so its dashboard or bank statement may not display the credit in exactly the same way as your success screen.

What happens if NEFT cannot credit the beneficiary?

RBI describes a return process when the destination bank cannot make the credit. Keep the UTR, contact your originating bank for tracking and ask the merchant to verify the account and IFSC rather than initiating another transfer.

Can a bank set a lower limit than NPCI’s IMPS or UPI limit?

Yes. NPCI’s published figures are network-level guidance for the stated channels and categories; a bank can apply lower internal limits, account controls or temporary restrictions. The limit shown in your bank’s payment screen is the one that governs your attempt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is NEFT free for every type of customer and transfer?

No universal statement covers every account and channel. RBI guidance says online outward NEFT from savings accounts has no customer charge, while other outward categories have permitted maximum charges plus GST; check your bank’s current schedule for the specific transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. NPCI says an initiated UPI payment cannot be stopped. Record the transaction ID and use the UPI app’s complaint route, then contact your bank if the payment is wrong or disputed.

Does a merchant receive UPI money directly into its bank account?

NPCI says funds go immediately to the merchant or pool account specified in its agreement. A merchant dashboard or statement may update differently because settlement and reconciliation are separate displays.

What happens if NEFT cannot credit the beneficiary?

RBI describes a return process when credit cannot be made. Keep the UTR, ask your bank to track it and have the merchant verify the account number and IFSC before you try again.

Can a bank set a lower limit than NPCI’s IMPS or UPI limit?

Yes. Banks can impose lower internal, account or channel limits, so the amount shown in your bank’s payment screen controls your transaction.
