Your existing D&D Beyond character is not being deleted or silently converted. The March 2, 2026 change only renamed library labels: 2014 material is now marked 5e, while the 2024 Player’s Handbook rules are marked 5.5e. To change a character’s mechanics, you must rebuild the sheet yourself; D&D Beyond has no one-click conversion button.

The safest route is to copy the character, keep the original as a 5e backup, delete the old class on the copy, add the 5.5e class at the same level, and then update the background, species, ability scores, feats and spells. Plan on roughly 30–60 minutes for the rebuild, as D&D Beyond’s official guidance recommends.

What does “update” mean on D&D Beyond?

There are two different changes that players call an update. Separating them prevents an unnecessary rebuild.

The 2026 label change is cosmetic

On March 2, 2026, D&D Beyond changed its labels from “2014” to 5e and from “2024” to 5.5e. The printed book is still titled the Player’s Handbook (2024); 5e and 5.5e are the current D&D Beyond library labels. The rename changed no rules, purchases, characters or campaigns. D&D Beyond support says you do not need to update or convert anything because of that announcement.

A rules conversion changes the build

A real conversion means rebuilding the character on 5.5e class, subclass, background, species, feat and spell options. Existing 5e sheets continue to use their 2014 mechanics. They may receive terminology changes such as Race becoming Species, Inspiration becoming Heroic Inspiration and Cast Spell becoming Magic, but those labels do not turn the sheet into a 5.5e character.

What do I need before converting?

  • A spare character slot for the safest method. Copying the sheet leaves a complete 5e reference and preserves the live inventory on the new copy. D&D Beyond’s reviewed pages do not publish an exact free-tier slot count; when you reach your account’s character limit, the Create Character option is disabled.
  • Access to the 5.5e rules you intend to use. The digital Player’s Handbook (5.5e) unlocks its full classes, subclasses, feats, backgrounds, species and spells. The free Basic Rules (5.5e) provide only a subset. Owning the 2014 Player’s Handbook does not unlock the 5.5e book.
  • Your old sheet open for comparison. Keep it in another browser tab or window and note rolled hit points, class choices, prepared spells, feats, equipment and any house rules.
  • Agreement from the Dungeon Master and group. A mixed table is allowed, and a player can wait until a campaign ends. Discuss feature changes, replacement spells and new systems before changing a live character.

The physical rulebook you are converting into is sold as Dungeons & Dragons Player’s Handbook (2024). Its 384 pages contain 12 classes, 48 subclasses, 16 backgrounds, 10 species, 75 feats and nearly 400 spells. The D&D Beyond version uses the 5.5e label.

How do I convert an old character sheet safely?

Use the duplicate-and-rebuild process. It is the official D&D Beyond sequence and gives you a rollback if the new build does not fit the campaign.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create a copy. Open the character’s management page and choose the option to copy or duplicate the sheet. Confirm that the copy has the same level, inventory and current statistics.
  2. Rename the original. Add “5e” or “2014” to the old character’s name, such as “Mira — 5e backup.” Do not delete it until the group has approved the new sheet.
  3. Open Character Builder on the copy. Start with the class because class level controls many later choices.
  4. Delete the old class. In the class section, remove the 5e class levels, not the character. This clears the old class features while leaving the copied sheet and its inventory intact.
  5. Add the 5.5e class. Select the 5.5e version, restore the character to the previous level, and reproduce the old choices where they still exist: subclass, fighting style, invocations, maneuvers, expertise and similar selections. Read every feature rather than assuming a familiar name has identical wording.
  6. Rebuild the subclass. All 5.5e Player’s Handbook classes choose a subclass at level 3, including Cleric and Warlock. A 5.5e class can use an older subclass if the DM allows it, but check for wording conflicts at the table.
  7. Update the background. Select a 5.5e background when possible. It supplies skill and tool proficiencies, starting equipment or gold, ability-score bonuses and an Origin Feat.
  8. Update the species. Species no longer provide ability-score increases. Choose the species traits that match the character’s ancestry and review any changed features.
  9. Set ability scores. The generation method—rolling, standard array or point buy—has not changed. Apply the new background’s permitted bonuses rather than carrying over printed 5e species bonuses.
  10. Skip starting equipment. Because the character was duplicated, the existing weapons, armor, items and currency are already present. Only rerun starting-equipment choices if the player deliberately wants a different loadout.
  11. Review the finished sheet. Check hit points, proficiency bonus, saving throws, armor class, attacks, feats, class resources, prepared spells, inventory and notes before publishing the copy to the campaign.

Allow about 30–60 minutes for a normal character. A high-level multiclass, a spell-heavy build or a sheet with homebrew features can take longer.

How should I handle backgrounds, species and ability scores?

Older backgrounds

If the background you want is not available in a 5.5e source, use the guidance for backgrounds from older books in the D&D Beyond Basic Rules. In practice, an older background needs assigned ability-score increases and an Origin Feat under the 5.5e framework. Agree on the assignments with the DM rather than choosing bonuses that exceed the new background rules.

Older species and races

Older races remain usable with the Legacy source enabled. Ignore their printed ability-score increases and take ability-score bonuses from the background. The 5.5e Player’s Handbook does not include Variant Human or half-species as options; Human receives an Origin Feat and can regain Heroic Inspiration after a Long Rest, while a character using a half-species concept needs a single species’ published traits or a DM-approved adaptation.

When the scores do not fit

If the new background’s allowed three ability scores do not match the character’s established concept, use Character Builder’s Other Modifier or Override Score only with DM permission. That preserves the campaign’s decision without pretending the result came from an ordinary 5.5e background.

What changes for classes, subclasses and feats?

Read the complete 5.5e feature text at each level. Several features retain familiar names while changing their action, target or limitation; Wild Shape is a commonly noticed example. Ability Score Improvement appears in the D&D Beyond feat picker because the 5.5e system treats it as a feat choice.

Weapon Mastery is a new class feature for Barbarian, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger and Rogue. The character sheet may show the mastery properties, but the player must track which weapon property is active during play.

If a desired subclass is missing, first enable the relevant source toggles. A 5.5e class may be paired with a 2014 Player’s Handbook, Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything or Xanathar’s Guide to Everything subclass when the DM permits it. A missing picker entry can be a source-toggle or builder problem, not evidence that a purchase disappeared; record a DM-approved feature in notes or homebrew while the builder is corrected.

How do I convert spells to 5.5e?

Spellcasters must replace the 5e versions manually. On a converted 5.5e class, remove every spell carrying the Legacy or 5e designation, then add the 5.5e counterpart from the class or subclass list. Recheck prepared spells, spellbook entries, cantrips, rituals, material components and concentration notes.

  • Feeblemind is now Befuddlement.
  • Branding Smite is now Shining Smite.

Those are replacements, not additional spells to keep alongside the old entries. Some class and subclass lists also gained spells, so compare the complete 5.5e list rather than changing only renamed spells.

A character that remains 5e can keep using 2014 spells. D&D Beyond’s current policy preserves those spells, abilities, items and conditions on existing 5e sheets; Legacy spells may appear beside newer content for reference. You do not need homebrew merely to keep a 2014 character or its 2014 spell.

Can I mix 5e and 5.5e content in one campaign?

Yes. D&D Beyond says 5e and 5.5e content remain compatible, so a table can stay on 5e, convert individual characters, or use a mixture. Decide which rules govern an ambiguous feature before play.

Approach Best when What you keep Main trade-off
Stay on 5e The campaign is near its ending or the group prefers unchanged features Original class, spells, items and 2014 wording You do not receive 5.5e class features or new character options
Convert fully to 5.5e The group is adopting the revised classes and spell lists Copied inventory, with rebuilt class, background, species, feats and spells Requires a deliberate rebuild and a rules discussion
Mix sources Players want different timelines or a legacy subclass 5e and 5.5e options in the same campaign, subject to DM approval Different versions of similar features can create table rulings

Before switching, review each character’s feature, spell, feat and item changes. Explain Weapon Mastery, revised healing, crafting and other new systems. A one-shot or non-canon side quest is a low-risk way to see whether the group likes the new rules.

What new rules should the table explain before play?

  • Grapple and Shove: an Unarmed Strike can deal damage, grapple or shove.
  • Healing magic: Cure Wounds and Healing Word double the dice that restore Hit Points compared with their 5e versions. Prayer of Healing and Aura of Vitality also changed.
  • Heroic Inspiration: spend it to reroll any die immediately after rolling it, including a death save or damage die.
  • Potions: drinking a potion or applying one to another creature uses a Bonus Action.
  • Stunned: the condition no longer reduces Speed to 0.
  • Weapon Mastery: eligible martial classes gain special properties tied to particular weapons.
  • Crafting and Bastions: use the tables and procedures in the 5.5e Player’s Handbook and Dungeon Master’s Guide rather than relying on 5e assumptions.

What if I do not have the 5.5e Player’s Handbook?

You can leave the character on 5e or use the options exposed by Basic Rules (5.5e). The free rules began with Cleric, Fighter, Rogue and Wizard plus one subclass each, then expanded to the remaining core classes on September 17, 2024; they still do not equal the complete digital Player’s Handbook. A 2014 book purchase does not grant the 5.5e digital options.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What if I want to change the same sheet instead of making a copy?

The community workaround is to open Character Management, go to Class, click the red X beside the class and level, and then add the new core-rules class. This removes class levels rather than the character, so inventory and feats remain, but rolled hit points are cleared and must be typed back in. It is riskier because there is no untouched 5e reference; use it only after recording the old sheet or when no spare slot is available.

Keep Legacy and Extended source toggles on while comparing older options. Once the conversion is complete, turn Legacy off if you want the builder to show only 5.5e choices. If an option vanishes unexpectedly, check those toggles before assuming the content is unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will existing characters or campaigns be affected?

No. D&D Beyond’s current changelog says 2014 character mechanics remain intact, with only terminology and labels updated. Existing campaigns continue to work, and content marked 5e and 5.5e can be used together. The only changes to a character are the ones a player or DM deliberately makes during a rebuild.

How do I troubleshoot a conversion?

  • The 5.5e class is missing: verify that the digital 5.5e source is unlocked and that Legacy is not hiding the option you need.
  • A subclass is absent: enable its book’s source, confirm the subclass is allowed with the new class, and ask the DM whether a note or homebrew feature is appropriate.
  • Hit points dropped: enter the recorded rolled total after deleting and re-adding class levels; the same-sheet workaround does not preserve that number automatically.
  • Old spells remain: filter the spell list for Legacy, remove each 5e entry and add its 5.5e counterpart.
  • Ability scores look wrong: check that species is not supplying old bonuses and that the background’s permitted bonuses are applied once.
  • Inventory disappeared: stop editing, reopen the original 5e sheet, and restore from it. A correctly duplicated sheet should retain equipment because starting equipment was skipped.
  • The group dislikes the result: keep the renamed 5e original and continue with it; conversion is optional, not a requirement imposed by the label change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does D&D Beyond publish the exact number of free character slots?

The reviewed official pages do not state a universal free-tier slot count. Instead, D&D Beyond disables Create Character when an account reaches its maximum, so check the character-creation screen before planning a duplicate.

Can a 5.5e class use a 2014 subclass?

Yes, if the DM allows the pairing. Read both versions for conflicts in level, action type and feature wording, then use the table’s ruling; third-party compatibility is still being patched in the builder.

What ability score is required for a multiclass conversion?

The normal multiclass prerequisite still applies: you need at least 13 in the new class’s key ability. Check the score after applying the new background bonuses and before adding the second class.
