If an uninsured driver damages your car, either collision coverage or uninsured motorist property damage (UMPD) may pay, depending on what you bought and the rules that apply where you live. Collision covers covered crashes under its policy terms; UMPD is specifically for qualifying damage caused by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver. Both can involve a deductible. Uninsured motorist bodily injury (UMBI) is different: it covers injuries, not car repairs.
What is the difference between collision and UMPD?
Collision and UMPD can both be relevant after an uninsured driver damages your car, but they are distinct coverages with different triggers. Check your declarations page and policy wording to see which you have and what conditions apply.
| Question | Collision | Uninsured motorist property damage (UMPD) |
|---|---|---|
| What damage may it cover? | Covered damage to your car from a collision with another vehicle or object, or from overturning, subject to the policy. | Damage to your car caused by an at-fault uninsured or hit-and-run driver, where the coverage is offered and included in your policy. |
| Does the other driver have to be uninsured? | No. The other driver’s insurance status does not by itself determine whether your covered collision loss is eligible. | It is intended for uninsured-driver or qualifying hit-and-run losses; other circumstances depend on state law and policy terms. |
| What deductible applies? | Usually the collision deductible shown in your policy. | Check your policy and state rules. Do not assume the deductible is zero or the same as your collision deductible. |
| Is it required? | State law generally does not require it, but a lender or lessor may require collision on a financed or leased car. | Availability and requirements vary by state; you must also have the coverage in your policy for it to apply. |
| What should you check? | Your declarations page, deductible, exclusions, settlement terms, and any lender or lease requirement. | Whether it is available and included, its limits and deductible, hit-and-run conditions, exclusions, and claim requirements. |
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) describes the two possible routes this way: “Your collision coverage or your uninsured motorist property damage coverage, if you bought it. Either way, you’ll have to pay a deductible.” The exact coverage and terms depend on your policy and state. NAIC consumer auto insurance guidance and its uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage guide explain these options.
Which coverage should you use after an uninsured driver hits you?
There is no universal answer. If you have collision, it may cover your car’s covered crash damage whether or not the other driver has insurance. If you have UMPD, it may cover damage from an at-fault uninsured driver, subject to state availability and your policy’s conditions. Report the crash to your insurer and ask which coverage applies to your specific loss; do not assume you can collect twice for the same damage.

- Check each coverage’s deductible, limits, exclusions, and claim requirements.
- Preserve available information about the driver and incident, and report the crash promptly. The sources do not establish one reporting deadline or procedure that applies to every policy and state.
Does uninsured motorist coverage pay for car repairs?
Only the property-damage form of uninsured motorist coverage is relevant to vehicle repairs. UMPD may cover qualifying damage caused by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver if your state and policy allow it. UMBI, or uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage, addresses injuries rather than damage to your car. The NAIC’s coverage guide distinguishes property damage from bodily injury.
What if the driver fled the scene?
A hit-and-run may qualify for UMPD, but eligibility and conditions vary by state and policy. Check your policy’s reporting and evidence requirements and contact your insurer. If you bought collision, it may also be a route to coverage, subject to its terms and deductible. No state-specific conclusion is possible without knowing where the crash happened and the policy involved.

What happens if the car is totaled?
A collision settlement for a totaled car is generally based on its actual cash value, not automatically the amount remaining on a car loan. Review the settlement terms in your policy and check separately whether any applicable coverage addresses a loan or lease balance. The NAIC discusses actual cash value and deductibles in its uninsured and underinsured motorist guide.

Comprehensive generally covers non-collision causes such as theft, fire, weather, vandalism, or flood. A crash does not become a comprehensive claim just because the other driver is uninsured. See the NAIC’s auto coverage definitions, dated June 11, 2026.

How do you check which coverage your policy includes?
- Open your declarations page and look for separate entries for collision, UMPD, and UMBI.
- Note the deductible and any stated limit for each listed coverage.
- Read the policy wording for exclusions, hit-and-run conditions, and claim requirements.
- If the terms or state rules are unclear, ask your insurer or contact your state insurance department. The NAIC explains that available coverage can depend on the state insurance system in its uninsured motorist overview.
How common are uninsured drivers?
The Insurance Research Council estimated that 15.4% of U.S. motorists—about one in seven—were uninsured in 2023, as reported by the NAIC. That is a 2023 estimate, not a current 2026 rate. NAIC: Uninsured Motorists (page last updated July 30, 2025).
