The AZERTY keyboard is a family of layouts used primarily in France and Belgium. Its name comes from the first six letters of the top alphabetic row—A, Z, E, R, T, Y—instead of Q, W, E, R, T, Y on US QWERTY. AZERTY suits French typing, but French and Belgian versions are not identical.
The most important practical distinction is that a keyboard has both a physical arrangement and a software input layout. Printed key legends do not determine what a computer outputs by themselves: an AZERTY keyboard paired with a QWERTY software layout can produce unexpected letters and symbols.
Key takeaways
- AZERTY is a layout family associated primarily with France and Belgium, not one universal keyboard design.
- The defining visual change is the top-row sequence A-Z-E-R-T-Y; A and Q exchange positions, and Z and W exchange positions compared with US QWERTY.
- French AZERTY and Belgian AZERTY are related but differ in punctuation, symbols, modifier labels, and some character access.
- France’s NF Z71-300 standard was published on April 2, 2019, but the voluntary standard has not automatically replaced traditional AZERTY keyboards.
- The physical keyboard and the operating system’s input layout are separate; both must match for the printed keys and typed characters to agree.
What is the AZERTY keyboard?
The AZERTY keyboard is a family of keyboard layouts whose name comes from the first six letters on the top alphabetic row: A-Z-E-R-T-Y. US QWERTY keyboards begin that row with Q-W-E-R-T-Y.
Compared with US QWERTY, traditional AZERTY visibly moves A into the position normally occupied by Q and Z into the position normally occupied by W. The change is immediately recognizable, but the name does not specify every key. Punctuation, symbols, modifier labels, accents, and some special characters vary by country, operating system, manufacturer, and keyboard format.

“AZERTY keyboard” therefore describes a layout family rather than one internationally fixed design. French AZERTY, Belgian AZERTY, optimized AZERTY under NF Z71-300, and BÉPO should not be treated as interchangeable.
Who uses AZERTY?
AZERTY is most strongly associated with France and Belgium. Related variants may also appear in other French-speaking markets, but language status and actual keyboard practice do not always match, so a country-by-country rule would be misleading.
France
AZERTY is the conventional arrangement for French computing, schools, offices, and many consumer keyboards sold in France. Traditional AZERTY remains important because users have learned it, existing laptops and office equipment use it, local product support assumes it, and replacing both hardware and muscle memory is inconvenient.

The standard offers an optimized AZERTY option, but it does not require every keyboard sold in France to use that arrangement.
Belgium
Belgium uses Belgian AZERTY variants. Belgian AZERTY is close enough to French AZERTY to belong to the same broad family, but Belgian and French keyboards can place punctuation, symbols, modifiers, and certain characters differently.
When buying a keyboard, search for a precise label such as French AZERTY, FR AZERTY, Belgian AZERTY, or BE AZERTY. A listing that says only “AZERTY” may not identify the version you need.
Why was AZERTY created?
AZERTY developed through a combination of earlier typewriter conventions, French-language requirements, and long-term market continuity. French typing needs frequent access to accented characters such as é, è, à, ç, ù, â, ê, î, ô, û, and ë, so a layout associated with French-language equipment evolved differently from layouts designed around English.
The historical explanation should not be reduced to the popular claim that AZERTY was created simply to slow typists down or prevent mechanical typewriter jams. The more defensible explanation is cumulative: earlier machine designs established conventions, French typography created different character needs, and schools, workplaces, manufacturers, and software preserved the arrangement.

Modern persistence is therefore as much a familiarity and compatibility story as a language story. A French-trained typist can work quickly on familiar AZERTY hardware, while changing to QWERTY imposes a retraining cost even when QWERTY might be better suited to another task.
How is AZERTY different from QWERTY?
AZERTY and QWERTY differ in their letter positions, language associations, symbol access, and regional variants. Neither layout is universally better; the practical choice depends on language, training, software, and daily tasks.
| Feature | AZERTY | US QWERTY |
|---|---|---|
| Top alphabetic row | A Z E R T Y | Q W E R T Y |
| Primary language association | French | English |
| French accents | Common French characters are generally more directly represented, although access varies by variant | Often requires dead keys, compose methods, or an alternate international layout |
| Programming punctuation | Some brackets, braces, backslashes, slashes, dollar signs, and related symbols may feel less convenient to users trained on US QWERTY | Familiar to many English-language programmers and US-centric tools |
| Regional versions | French and Belgian versions differ | US, UK, Canadian, and international versions differ |
| Main learning advantage | Familiar to people trained in France or Belgium and useful for French prose | Familiar to much of the English-speaking world and many international technical environments |
AZERTY can be convenient for French prose because accented letters and local conventions are closer to the user’s established workflow. QWERTY can be more convenient for English prose, US-centric programming habits, international travel, or systems configured around English-language shortcuts. Those are workflow differences, not proof that one layout is inherently more ergonomic.

French AZERTY and Belgian AZERTY share the A-Z-E-R-T-Y identity but are not the same keyboard layout. Their differences are concentrated especially in punctuation, symbols, modifier labels, and access to certain characters.
| Buying question | French AZERTY | Belgian AZERTY |
|---|---|---|
| Where is it primarily intended for? | France and French-configured systems | Belgium and Belgian-configured systems |
| Are the symbols identical? | No; compare the actual key legends | No; compare the actual key legends |
| Is the generic label “AZERTY” sufficient? | No | No |
| What should the buyer verify? | FR or French regional designation, keycap legends, operating-system layout, and physical format | BE or Belgian regional designation, keycap legends, operating-system layout, and physical format |
Do not assume that replacing keycaps will completely convert one national layout into the other. Enter, Shift, punctuation, modifier, and other positions may depend on the keyboard’s physical geometry as well as its printed legends.
Why do French users continue to use AZERTY?
French users continue to use AZERTY because the layout combines familiar motor patterns, access to common French characters, local availability, and compatibility with existing systems.
- Education: People who learned to type in France often build their speed and shortcuts around AZERTY.
- Workplaces: Offices, schools, help desks, and shared computers commonly preserve the local arrangement.
- Existing hardware: Replacing laptops, keyboards, keycaps, and training materials creates friction.
- French prose: Accented letters and French punctuation are part of the normal writing workflow.
- Support and muscle memory: Local documentation, colleagues, and troubleshooting instructions often assume the same layout.
Continued use is a network effect. Widespread familiarity makes AZERTY practical for French-trained users, but widespread use does not prove that traditional AZERTY is optimal for every French typist, programmer, gamer, or multilingual worker.
What are the weaknesses of traditional AZERTY?
Traditional AZERTY can make some uppercase accents, French typographic marks, multilingual characters, and programming symbols less convenient than users expect.

Uppercase accents and French typography
Historically, some traditional arrangements made uppercase accented letters awkward to enter. The same problem affected French guillemets, « », and ligatures such as œ/Œ and æ/Æ. AFNOR identifies these limitations, along with the need to support regional languages and other European languages using the Latin alphabet, in its discussion of the French keyboard project: French keyboard standard background from AFNOR.
Programming and technical work
AZERTY can feel inconvenient for programming when a developer’s tools, shortcuts, documentation, and muscle memory are based on US QWERTY. Brackets, braces, backslashes, slashes, dollar signs, and other symbols may require different key combinations on some AZERTY variants.
The limitation is task- and user-dependent. AZERTY does not make programming objectively worse for every developer, and a French-trained developer can become efficient with it. The relevant question is whether the layout makes the symbols and shortcuts used by a particular toolchain easy to reach.

International work and shared computers
Switching between layouts can cause incorrect symbols in passwords and commands, mistyped punctuation in code, confusion on another person’s computer, and problems inside remote desktops or virtual machines. A mismatch between printed legends and the active software layout can make the same physical key produce an unexpected character.
What is the optimized French AZERTY standard?
NF Z71-300 is a voluntary French standard for office keyboard layouts. France’s Ministry of Culture initiated the project in 2015 through the General Delegation for the French Language and the Languages of France, and NF Z71-300 was published on April 2, 2019, according to INRIA’s account of the AZERTY redesign and AFNOR’s standard overview.
The standard aims to improve access to French typography and to characters needed for regional and other European languages using the Latin alphabet. Its objectives include easier uppercase accented letters, better access to guillemets and ligatures, and clearer specifications for character placement, engraving, and associated software drivers.
NF Z71-300 defines two choices:
- An optimized AZERTY layout that remains relatively close to traditional AZERTY while improving access to additional characters.
- BÉPO, a substantially rearranged alternative designed for French and other Latin-alphabet languages.
The formal scope covers the alphanumeric module and character placement and engraving rules for 105-key and 72-key office keyboards used in France. The AFNOR consultation record explains that the standard does not prescribe every part of a keyboard: it excludes matters such as numeric-keypad layout, function-key layout, cursor-key layout, and physical row staggering. See the NF Z71-300 scope and exclusions.
NF Z71-300 is voluntary rather than a universal legal mandate. A keyboard advertised as French AZERTY may still use the traditional arrangement, and adoption by a manufacturer, operating system, laptop maker, school, or office is a separate question from publication of the standard. The current AFNOR record for NF Z71-300 should be checked when conformity or current status matters.

What is BÉPO, and who might prefer it?
BÉPO is an alternative French keyboard layout that moves letters and symbols substantially instead of preserving traditional AZERTY positions. BÉPO may suit professional French-language typists, writers who type for many hours daily, and users who prioritize French punctuation, accents, and a layout designed around language frequency and ergonomics.
BÉPO requires a meaningful retraining period. Existing AZERTY muscle memory is no longer directly useful, printed keycaps may not match the software mapping, shared computers may remain AZERTY or QWERTY, and conventional shortcuts or specialized applications may need adjustment. BÉPO is therefore a considered long-term choice rather than an automatic upgrade.
AFNOR describes BÉPO as an ergonomic alternative and notes that it is available under a free license on many operating systems. The official French keyboard layout project site provides background on optimized AZERTY and BÉPO.

The best layout depends on the language you type most, your existing training, your technical work, the computers you share, and your willingness to relearn key positions.
| Your situation | Most practical starting choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You learned to type in France and write French every day | French AZERTY | Preserves muscle memory and supports a familiar French workflow |
| You work in Belgium and need local symbol placement | Belgian AZERTY | Matches local workplace, school, and system conventions |
| You work mainly in English or move among international workplaces | US or another appropriate QWERTY variant | Reduces friction with English-language systems, shortcuts, and shared machines |
| You write French for many hours and control your own computers | Optimized AZERTY or BÉPO | May improve access to French typography if you accept retraining and compatibility costs |
| You code frequently with US-centric tools | QWERTY or a carefully tested AZERTY setup | Programming convenience depends on symbol access, shortcuts, and established muscle memory |
| You game across different computers | The layout supported by the game and your existing bindings | Games may interpret physical positions, logical characters, or scan codes differently |
Choose French AZERTY when French accents, local conventions, and existing French training dominate. Choose Belgian AZERTY when the keyboard must match Belgian hardware and software. Choose QWERTY when English, programming, travel, or international compatibility dominates. Consider BÉPO only when high French typing volume justifies retraining.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you diagnose an AZERTY keyboard mismatch?
A layout mismatch occurs when the physical keyboard and the software input layout do not describe the same arrangement. A physical AZERTY keyboard can be paired with a QWERTY software layout, and a physical QWERTY keyboard can be paired with an AZERTY software layout.
- Inspect the printed legends and identify whether the physical top row begins A-Z-E-R-T-Y or Q-W-E-R-T-Y.
- Open a plain text field rather than a password box or command that could cause side effects.
- Press the physical key labeled A.
- If the computer produces Q, the software is probably using QWERTY while the physical keyboard is AZERTY.
- Check the operating system’s language or input-layout indicator.
- Select the matching French or Belgian input layout.
- Test letters, accents, punctuation, quotation marks, brackets, and the symbols required by your work.
- If the mismatch remains, remove duplicate layouts or change the system’s keyboard-layout selection shortcut.
Operating-system menu names and paths change between Windows, macOS, Linux distributions, ChromeOS versions, and language settings, so verify the exact instructions for the operating system version in use rather than relying on a generic path.

What should you check before buying an AZERTY keyboard?
- Country variant: Confirm French AZERTY or Belgian AZERTY instead of relying on “AZERTY” alone.
- Operating system: Check support for Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, or a mixed environment.
- Physical format: ISO, ANSI, full-size, tenkeyless, compact, ergonomic, and split designs are separate choices from the language layout.
- Printed legends: Use the actual product photos or specification sheet, not a generic regional image.
- Main tasks: Consider French prose, English prose, coding, gaming, data entry, and multilingual work.
- Mac and Windows modifiers: Check Command and Option labeling versus Windows and Alt labeling.
- Programmability: A programmable keyboard can make switching among AZERTY, QWERTY, and BÉPO easier.
- Keycap compatibility: Confirm the keyboard’s geometry before assuming replacement keycaps will convert its national layout.
- Return policy: Imported keyboards are especially worth checking because a wrong regional layout may not be obvious from the product name.
- Game compatibility: Verify whether games bind controls by physical position, logical key, or scan code.
Mainstream keyboard ranges from Logitech, Apple, Dell, and other manufacturers may offer French AZERTY products, while Belgian retailers commonly list Belgian AZERTY separately. Availability, stock, exact regional SKU, promotion status, and price vary by country and date; confirm those details on the individual product page before buying. A generic product photograph is not proof of the physical layout.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is AZERTY only used in France?
AZERTY is primarily associated with France and Belgium, although related variants may appear in other French-speaking markets. A French-speaking country does not automatically use the same AZERTY variant, so local hardware and software should be checked.
Can an AZERTY keyboard type QWERTY?
Yes. An AZERTY keyboard can type according to a QWERTY software input layout, but the output will not match the printed key legends. The physical key arrangement and operating system input layout must be configured separately.
Recommended Free Tools
Is AZERTY better than QWERTY for programming?
Neither layout is universally better for programming. AZERTY may feel inconvenient to developers trained on US QWERTY because some punctuation and symbols require different combinations, while French-trained developers may work efficiently with AZERTY.
Is NF Z71-300 mandatory for every French keyboard?
No. NF Z71-300 is a voluntary French standard published on April 2, 2019. The standard defines an optimized AZERTY option and BÉPO, but it does not automatically replace traditional AZERTY or require every manufacturer to adopt it.
Should I choose BÉPO instead of AZERTY?
Choose BÉPO only if high-volume French typing and access to French typography justify learning a substantially different layout. BÉPO can be a poor fit for shared offices, frequent travelers, gamers, or users who depend on conventional AZERTY shortcuts.
The Bottom Line
AZERTY persists because it matches French-language needs and the habits of users in France and Belgium, not because it is universally superior to QWERTY. Identify the national variant, separate the physical keyboard from the software input layout, and choose according to language, region, task mix, and compatibility.
